I’m Maria, an exchange student in a junior high school in Wuhan. I have three roses here: a red one, a white
one and a yellow one. These roses are to thank three groups of people.
I give the red rose to my friends. When I started school here, my Chinese was not good and some of my
mistakes were very funny. I once tried to say “xiexie”, but I said “xiaxia” instead. But they didn’t laugh at me. They
taught me to say many things in Chinese and kindly invited me to join them. Today thanks to their kindness, my
Chinese is much better and we have become friends.
I give the white rose to my teachers, who have taught me that there is no success without effort. When I started
running in the 800-meter race, I always finished last and I just wanted to give up. But the P. E. teacher, Ms. Huang,
helped me a lot. She ran along with me and she said to me, “You will never succeed if you give up!” I’ve learned to
try my best, not only with running but with whatever else I do.
I give the yellow rose to my parents for teaching me that love is about trust. When I wanted to learn the violin,
my father told me that I should work much harder at math. I was disappointed. However, on the morning of my
birthday, I woke up to find a beautiful violin at my bedside. There was a note from my father: “I am sure you will
be good at music. I believe that you will be better at math.”I truly show my thanks to my friends, teachers and parents for the three most important things that I have

The Unspoken Thank You
Part 1: Read and Explore
For years, Mr. Davies was just the quiet librarian at our school. To most students, he was the man who said
"Shhh" and sorted books. But to me, he was the keeper of silent worlds and the first person who saw the reader in
me.
I was twelve, painfully shy, and found conversations exhausting. The library became my refuge. I would sit in
the same corner every day, escaping into stories. Although Mr. Davies noticed my routine, he never forced a
conversation. He’d simply place a new book near my seat—a fantasy novel after I finished a mystery, a book about
space when I lingered at the science section.
I never realized how much I relied on those silent recommendations until the day he was absent. The
replacement librarian was friendly but unfamiliar. My corner felt empty, and the shelves seemed chaotic. That’s
when I understood: his careful selections were a quiet language of care. He wasn't just giving me books; he was
giving me worlds where I felt I belonged.
When he returned, I gathered my courage. "Thank you," I whispered at the checkout desk, my face growing
hot. "For the books."
He looked up, his eyes kind behind his glasses. "Ah," he said softly. "You're the girl who finishes them all.
I'm glad they found their reader." That was all. But in that moment, I felt seen, not for being loud or social, but for
being exactly who I was—a reader.
He didn't just help me pass time. By acknowledging my quiet passion, he helped me feel confident in my own
skin so that I could carry that confidence beyond the library doors. His kindness didn't shout; it whispered. And
sometimes, the quietest acts of understanding are the ones that remain in your heart the longest.

In life, gratitude doesn't always require grand gestures. Like Mr. Davies in the story, many people show care
through actions rather than words.
Please complete the following two tasks:
1. Observation & Discovery:
Think about your school or family life. Is there someone who has cared for or helped you through quiet actions (not
many words)? (e.g., a family member who always saves a snack for you; a classmate who silently cleans the
blackboard for you during your duty; a friend who notices you're upset and hands you a tissue).

You don't have to wait a long time to say thank you like in the story. Design a brief but thoughtful "instant thank-
you" for the person you discovered.

difference to you. 必须使用本单元的一个句型(although/until/so that/if)。
