C.PS VR2. D.PICO 4. B When I bought a house in Portland four years ago, I immediately began designing my dream garden, intending to remove the weeds and plant some vegetables or long-lasting flowers. I soon discovered, however, that the soil was unproductive, clay-heavy and littered with stones. In previous, much tinier gardens, I’d fix it with a few bags of high-quality soil from the nursery. Replacing this vastly greater quantity of dirt was neither practical nor financially possible. Instead, I decided to remediate (补救) what I already had. The challenge before me was to revive the soil. Two core principles of modern agriculture can guide this shift: minimizing soil disturbance and emphasizing biodiversity. In practice, growing crops by turns; prioritizing organic inputs over chemical fertilizers; integrating crops, trees and livestock; and sheltering soil from being washed away with cover crops, often work. I tried to apply such methods in my garden. Where once there was only grass, I made a pond, a rock garden, a wildflower field and raised beds for vegetables. I let plants grow and decompose by themselves in a natural way. I 试卷第4页,共13页also introduced different plants and revived its ecological communities. In May, I decided to relocate a flowering plant. As I dug the plant out, all manner of life emerged. Earthworms swung from the roots. A daddy longlegs hurried for shelter. Below the plant I even noticed the fine white fungal mycelium (真菌菌丝). Running my fingers through the soil, I understood, more clearly than ever before, that I transformed much more than my yard - it completely changed the way I think about soil. It’s not simply as a medium for life, but as a living entity (个体) in its own right. Although science still lacks an agreed definition of life, textbooks highlight criteria widely considered to differentiate the living and nonliving. Soil meets many of them: It has a highly organized structure. It has a capacity for active self-preservation. It grows. It breathes. And it can die. 24.What was the soil problem in the author’s garden? A.Wet and salty. B.Poor and stony. C.Dry and sandy. D.Acidic and weedy. 25.What was the focus of the author’s gardening methods? A.Limiting plant variety. B.Adopting a high-tech approach. C.Giving more intervention. D.Creating a sustainable environment. 26.Why does the author mention the replanting in May? A.To introduce different species. B.To prove the garden shelters insects. C.To show the soil has come to life. D.To explain the transplanting process. 27.What is conveyed in the last paragraph? A.Soil has a soul. B.Life is well defined. C.Life has complexity. D.Soil is the source of life. C Past research has shown the negative effects of too much sugar intake on health, which has informed recommendations to limit consumption of “free” or added sugar to less than 10% of a person’s daily caloric intake. Still, researchers in China and the United States felt that before developing detailed policies for sugar restriction, the quality of existing evidence needs to be comprehensively evaluated, according to a study published in the journal The BMJ. In a big study that looked at 73 reviews and 8,601 smaller studies, eating a lot of added sugar was linked to a much higher chance of 45 bad health problems, including diabetes (糖尿病), obesity, high blood pressure, heart attack, cancer, depression, and early death. Free sugars are those added during the processing of foods, packaged as table sugar, and naturally occurringin honey, fruit juice, vegetable juice and similar products in which the cellular (细胞的) structure of the food has been broken down, according to the FDA.This category does not include sugars naturally occurring in dairy or structurally whole fruits and vegetables. “Whole food carbohydrates (碳水化合物) take longer to break down into simple sugars,” said Dr. Maya Adam, a professor at Stanford University School of Medicine. “This means that whole grains don’t cause the same increases in blood sugar that we experience when we eat simple sugars. Blood sugar increases are the basic cause of health problems in the long run.” The findings suggest people should circumscribe free sugar intake to less than 25 grams per day. There are some changes you can make. Be aware of what you’re putting in your body by reading nutrition labels when shopping — even the ones on foods you might not think of as sweet, such as bread and yogurts. These foods usually have lots of added sugar, and it adds up, Adam said. Cooking and baking at home more often is one of the best ways to reduce sugar intake, said Brooke Aggarwal, a professor at Columbia University Irving Medical Center. Getting enough good-quality sleep on a regular basis would also help “as we tend to choose foods higher in sugar when we’re tired,” she added. All in all, we should cut back on our consumption of added sugar to less than 10% of a person’s daily caloric intake. After all, eating too much “free sugar” has many negative health effects. 28.What needs to be done before making detailed policies to restrict sugar? A.Make a detailed category. B.Investigate the sugar market. C.Check the existing evidence. D.Monitor products containing sugar. 29.What can be inferred from Dr. Maya Adam’s words in paragraph 5? A.Whole grains are more nutritious. B.Whole food carbohydrates don’t break. C.The rise of blood sugar is a long process.D.Simple sugars raise blood sugar rapidly. 30.What does the underlined word “circumscribe” in paragraph 6 mean? A.Limit. B.Increase. C.Ignore. D.Promote. 31.What is the author’s attitude to the consumption of added sugar? A.Supportive. B.Critical. C.Doubtful. D.Cautious. D “Neurons (神经元) that fire together, wire together.” Perhaps you have heard this oft-quoted phrase of psychologist Donald Hebb and wondered what it means. To find this out, you need to understand “neuroplasticity“ first. Your brain can change, and that process is 试卷第6页,共13页called neuroplasticity. Stimuli (刺激) cause a response and changes in your brain. The stimuli can be external, such as taking up a new hobby, or internal, such as a golfer imagining the perfect putt (推杆) just before actually stepping up and putting. Every time your brain responds to stimuli, an electrical impulse (脉冲) causes either the formation of a new synaptic (突触的) connection or the strengthening of an existing connection. This is what Hebb meant with his theory about firing and wiring together. By contrast, if you stop doing an activity, the synaptic connection can reduce through a lack of use. There is a healthy competition always going on inside your brain to maintain synaptic connections. This is healthy because the connections being used “win” and maintain their strength. Strong connections make a task easier. This competition helps explain why 10, 000 hours of practice is presented as a path to expertise. You will have repeated an action so often and for so long that it simply becomes second nature and feels effortless. In comparison, trying a task for the first time, or picking up an old task after a long break, can feel challenging or energy-consuming at first. Why? Because the synaptic connections don’t exist or have weakened. You have to work harder to perform that task. The good news is that your healthy brain-at any age-can learn, grow, and adapt to the changing world around you. Stated differently, the old idea that you peak by 40 or 45 and from that point onwards, your mind and life go downhill is not supported by 30 years of neuroscientific research revealing a very different story about your brain’s continued growth and development through all ages. Simply put, you can be more adaptive and resilient (有复原力 的) throughout your entire life if you make the right choices and take positive actions. 32.What does paragraph 2 mainly discuss? A.How Hebb’s theory works. B.Where stimuli come from. C.How an electrical impulse happens. D.Why neuroplasticity causes synaptic connection. 33.Which of the following reflects neuroplasticity? A.Rome wasn’t built in a day. B.Practice makes perfect. C.Every cloud has a silver lining. D.United we stand, divided we fall. 34.What causes beginners to find new tasks hard according to paragraph 4? A.A lack of synaptic connections. B.Limited access to necessary information. C.Poor preparation for potential difficulties. D.The huge amount of energy required for the tasks. 35.What can be concluded from years of neuroscientific research?A.Mental decline is unavoidable. B.People become less adaptive as they age. C.People can have lifelong brain development. D.Strong adaptability helps people stay positive. 第二节(共5小题:每小题2. 5分, 满分12. 5分) 阅读下面短文, 从短文后选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Every time I drive somewhere, I rely on the GPS (Global Positioning System) on my phone to guide me to my destination. 36 . It makes me wonder: Is there anything I can do to improve my skills in finding the way? The answer is yes. If you also want to gain confidence on the road or be less reliant on GPS to get around, here are some steps you can take to boost your sense of direction. Use landmarks to orient(确定方位) yourself If you are unsure of your direction relative to home, landmarks can help you orient yourself. According to Mary Hegarty, a cognitive(认知的) psychologist, ideal landmarks for orientation are large and far-away structures. 37 . Mary Hegarty lives in Santa Barbara. She uses the mountains there as landmarks and knows they are north no matter where she is in the city. 38 Whether you’re going somewhere new or to a place you’ve been to loads of times, it is a good habit to turn around and observe the view behind you. According to Hegarty, it helps you memorize the details of your route. 39 . Understand the layout of the city If you’re trying to figure out where you are in a new place, it helps to understand the basic street layout—the arrangement of streets. The street layout often follows a certain pattern, with the grid(网格) pattern being quite common among cities. 40 . It is divided into four sections and has streets that run three ways: north-south, east-west and at an angle. To orient yourself, locate your position relative to the main directions. A.Always follow the familiar paths B.Be curious about your surroundings C.Washington, D.C.is a typical example D.Without it, not only would I be lost, I’d feel lost E.GPS currently consists of 24 operational satellites F.Examples include big signs, tall buildings, and bridges 试卷第8页,共13页G.Moreover, it offers you visual clues for finding your way back 第三部分语言运用(共两节,满分30分) 第一节(共15小题:每小题1分,满分15分) 阅读下面短文, 从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。 On the subway home, I said to Hugh, “Why can’t we go on safari?” A month later, we were in an open-sided vehicle, 41 by seven lions. None of them seemed to 42 us; they groomed (梳毛) themselves and had fun at their leisure. On the ninety-minute 43 to our camp, we saw every animal that was in “The Lion King” and then some. They were just there, like 44 at a picnic on the grass, except that they were elephants and giraffes. We saw zebras, leopards, wildebeests, and warthogs, all eating or resting or 45 on this grass-covered, seemingly limitless plain. “Have you seen a(n) 46 ?” people in other vehicles would ask. “On our first day, we saw a lion eating a wildebeest.” I’d tell them. That was like saying you’d seen one 47 a sandwich. It was 48 to watch him dive for his prey (猎物), and tear its throat out. But such scenes were 49 ; most of the time, the animals were just following their daily 50 . The world can be a violent and cruel place, but that’s not the 51 you want to carry home with you. Yes, wild animals are often 52 , but there’s still nature’s beauty to appreciate. Of course, not everyone can 53 with elephants, but look at that bird sitting on your feeder and at the spider that 54 got trapped in your elevator. The wooden arch bridges, mostly 56 (find) in eastern China’s Fujian and Zhejiang provinces, are built without a single metal nail or rivet (铆钉). Instead, they rely merely on 57 (complicated) fitted wooden structures. A superstructure in traditional Chinese wooden style crowns the bridge, 58 functions as a magnificent roof while also strengthening the stability of the entire structure. Wooden arch bridges are more than just means of transportation; they are centers for gatherings, entertainment, trade and other social 59 (activity). Every now and then, events like weddings, funerals and birthdays 60 (hold) on these bridges. During the Dragon Boat Festival, locals believe the more times one crosses the bridges, the 61 (wealthy) their life will become. Gabriella Bonino, an Italian architect, said she once visited craftsmen behind wooden arch bridges, 62 (feel) the depth of their impressive traditional skills. “Walking across Chinese wooden arch bridges, I could feel the connection 63 art and nature. UNESCO’s 64 (recognize) shows how much effort has been made to protect and pass down the traditional skills of building these bridges. Knowing that these skills are now safe and will continue for future generations makes me feel proud and hopeful. It’s 65 success for preserving culture in today’s fast-changing world,” she said. 试卷第10页,共13页第四部分 写作(共两节, 满分40分) 第一节(满分15分) 66.假定你是李华,是校英语学习俱乐部的负责人。你们邀请到了Smith教授在线做主题为“How to Write and Enjoy English Poems”的专题讲座。请你在讲座前作简要发言,内容包括: 1.表示感谢; 2.相关介绍; 3.对听众的要求。 注意:1.写作词数应为80左右; 2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 Dear fellow students, ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________________________ That’s all. Since the demise of her spouse a few years prior, she had consistently spent each Thanksgiving as a solitary individual, her progeny residing at a distance for college-level education and merely making sporadic telephone calls. As she rotated the signboard to display “Closed”, preparing to confront yet another desolate holiday celebration, she observed a male individual seated on the frigid steps outside. He appeared to be in the latter part of his fourth decade, attired in garments that had seen better days, his countenance etched with the marks of arduous experiences. He raised his gaze, his eyes mirroring a blend of fatigue and unvoiced adversities. “Pardon me, Madam,” he uttered in a low voice, “I have been deprived of a proper and satisfying meal for several days. Would it be possible for you to spare a small portion?” Emily paused momentarily but promptly unlocked the door, gesturing warmly to invite him in. “It is Thanksgiving Eve,” she declared with an amiable smile, “No individual ought toexperience hunger on this particular day.” The male, who identified himself as James, expressed his gratitude and took a seat near the corner window. Emily proceeded to prepare a substantial and nourishing repast: steaming hot pumpkin pie, freshly-baked bread, and a roasted turkey. As James partook of the meal, he shared fragments of his life story — he had previously been a truck driver, but had unfortunately lost his occupation, which subsequently led to the loss of his dwelling place and compelled him to wander from one location to another. Emily listened with rapt attention, experiencing an unforeseen surge of empathetic sentiment as she established a connection with this unfamiliar person. Upon the conclusion of the meal, James delved into his worn-out outer garment and produced a diminutive, meticulously folded paper crane. “I crafted this an extended period ago,” he mentioned in a gentle tone. “It is the final one in my possession. I desire for you to accept it, as a symbol of the benevolence you have demonstrated today.” Moved by this gesture, Emily expressed her appreciation and, on a sudden impulse, proposed a part-time employment opportunity at the cafe to James. James’s eyes filled with tears of thankfulness. “I would be honored to accept,” he responded. 注意: (1)续写词数应为150左右; (2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 From that day forward, James worked at the cafe. ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ One evening, as Emily and James were enjoying their dinner, Emily’s son unexpectedly called. ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________________ 试卷第12页,共13页
