B I was born in Monrovia, Liberia on March 13, 1977. In early 1990, a cruel civil war started in Liberia. The nation’s economic, political and social systems were destroyed. 250,000 people were killed and one million were displaced. More than 700,000 Liberians fled to neighboring countries to avoid the war. I am one of them. Less fortunate refugees have been living in camps for more than 10 years. Children suffered the most damage; a high percentage of them were recruited as child soldiers—the boys were taken to fight. I escaped to the bordering Ivory Coast after the death of my stepfather at the end of 1990. I watched thecountry go from peaceful and quiet to dangerous. In November 1993, I finally got to the United States and was reunited with my family. I received a full academic scholarship to college, where I obtained a degree in Electronic Communication. After graduating, I moved to Manhattan for my career in fashion. I never forgot how much suffering my fellow Liberians stood. To help those back home in Monrovia, I began donating to individuals, orphanages and women’s groups five years ago. Those efforts grew into The MacDella Cooper Foundation. In 2004, I started The MacDella Cooper Foundation (MCF), an organization devoted to empowering Liberian youth, especially orphans and abandoned children, by providing education and basic necessities. My dream is to educate as many Liberian children as MCF can support, so that they can later contribute to the economic redevelopment of the country and to make sure Liberia’s history is not repeated. I believe that education is the saving grace of Liberia and Africa as a whole. But to promote education, we must first provide the basic needs—shelter, food, clothing and security. In just a few short years, we have assisted foster homes and five orphanages in Monrovia. MCF has also reunited families and aided a young Liberian orphan needing medical treatment for cancer. Additionally, in December MCF holds an annual children’s Christmas party at the Susie Gunther Orphanage in Monrovia for more than 500 orphans. Each child receives a warm meal on Christmas day and a gift bag filled with toys and other necessities. We’re very excited and honored to be part of the world community assisting in Liberia’s recovery. Our final goal is a strong, educated, and economically sound Liberia. 41.When the cruel civil war started in Liberia, the author ______. A.stayed in a camp B.lived with all of her family C.lived with her stepfather D.had decided to go for America 42.According to the text, the author could arrive in America in November 1993, and she should be very ______. A.lucky B.brave C.regretful D.disappointed 43.During the study in college, the author ______. A.founded MCF B.received a degree in fashion C.had a part-time job in fashion D.needn’t pay a lot of fee 44.According to the text, MCF aims at ______. A.helping Liberia’s recovery in every way B.assisting the poor people in the world C.helping change African education D.offering basic needs to the Liberians 45.It can be inferred that the text should be ______. A.a discussion about social problems B.the introduction of MCFC.a funny make-up story D.the author’s real story and her MCF C Sometimes you’ll hear people say that you can’t love others until you love yourself. Sometimes you’ll hear people say that you can’t expect someone else to love you until you love yourself. Either way, you’ve got to love yourself first and this can be tricky. Sure we all know that we’re the apple of our parents’ eyes, and that our Grandmas think we’re great talents and our Uncle Roberts think that we will go to the Olympics. But sometimes it’s a lot harder to think such nice thoughts about ourselves. If you find that believing in yourself is a challenge, it is time you build a positive self-image and learn to love yourself. Self-image is your own mind’s picture of yourself. This image includes the way you look, the way you act, the way you talk and the way you think. Interestingly, our self-images are often quite different from the images others hold about us. Unfortunately, most of these images are more negative than they should be. Thus changing the way you think about yourself is the key to changing your self-image and your whole world. The best way to defeat a passive self-image is to step back and decide to stress your successes. That is, make a list if you need to, but write down all of the great things you do every day. Don’t allow doubts to occur in it. It very well might be that you are experiencing a negative self-image because you can’t move past one flaw or weakness that you see about yourself. Well, roll up your sleeves and make a change of it as your primary task. If you think you’re silly because you aren’t good at math, find a tutor. If you think you’re weak because you can’t run a mile, get to the track and practice. If you think you’re dull because you don’t wear the latest trends, buy a few new clothes. But remember, just because you think it doesn’t mean it’s true. The best way to get rid of a negative self-image is to realize that your image is far from objective, and to actively convince yourself of your positive qualities. Changing the way you think and working on those you need to improve will go a long way towards promoting a positive self-image. When you can pat yourself on the back, you’ll know you’re well on your way. Good luck! 46.You need to build a positive self-image when you___________. A.dare to challenge yourself B.feel it hard to change yourself C.are unconfident about yourself D.have a high opinion of yourself 47.According to the passage, our self-images___________. A.have positive effects B.are probably untrue C.are often changeable D.have different functions 48.How should you change your self-image according to the passage? A.To keep a different image of others. B.To make your life successful.C.To understand your own world. D.To change the way you think. 49.What is the passage mainly about? A.How to prepare for your success. B.How to face challenges in your life. C.How to build a positive self-image. D.How to develop your good qualities. 50.Who are the intended readers of the passage? A.Parents. B.Adolescents. C.Educators. D.People in general. D Happiness is for everyone. You don’t need to care about those people who have beautiful houses with large gardens and swimming pools or those who have nice cars and a lot of money and so on. Why? Because those who have big houses may often feel lonely and those who have cars may want to walk on the country roads in their free time. In fact, happiness is always around you if you put your heart into it. When you are in trouble at school, your friends will help you; when you study hard at your lessons, your parents are always taking care of your life and your health; when you get success, your friends will say congratulations to you; when you do something wrong, people around you will help you to correct it. And when you do something good to others, you will feel happy, too. All these are your happiness. If you notice them, you can see that happiness is always around you. True happiness is not the same as money. It is a feeling of your heart. When you are poor, you can also say you are very happy, because you have something else that can’t be bought with money. When you meet with difficulties, you can say loudly you are very happy, because you have more chances to challenge yourself. So you can not always say you are poor and you have bad luck. As the saying goes, “Life is like a revolving (旋转的) door. When it closes, it also opens.” If you take every chance you get, you can be a happy and lucky person. 51.Happiness is for ___________. A.those who have large and beautiful houses B.those who have cars C.those who have a lot of money D.all people 52.When you do something wrong, ___________. A.you may correct it B.you will have no chance to challenge yourself C.anybody will laugh at you D.you will be happy 53.Which is TRUE according to the passage?A.When you get success, your friends will be very proud of you. B.You can get help from others when you make mistakes. C.You can still be a happy person even if you have little money. D.All the above. 54.Why do we say “Happiness is not the same as money”? Because ___________. A.money always brings happiness B.money doesn’t always bring happiness C.everything can be bought with money D.only rich people have happiness 55.Which is the best title of the passage? A.Do Something Good to Others B.Happy and Lucky C.What is True Happiness D.Life and Success 第II卷 非选择题(满分35分) 第三部分:写作 第一节:阅读表达(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 阅读短文,按照题目要求用英语回答问题。 One hot August afternoon, Deena Hoagland and her son Joe sat on a floating platform at Dolphins Plus, a marine center in Key Largo, Florida. Nearby, a large dolphin circled, occasionally lifting its head through the water to observe them. Suddenly, the dolphin threw water on them. Three-year-old Joe, who had a stroke (中风) six weeks earlier, smiled and laughed for the first time since. Joe was born with a rare heart condition and spent much of his first three years in hospitals. After several heart surgeries, the last one led to a stroke, which left him unconscious for eight days. As a result, he lost movement on one side of his body and couldn’t see out of one eye. Feeling hopeless and deeply saddened, Joe became despondent and lost interest in everything, even his favorite toys. Doctors suggested placing him in a full-time rehabilitation center. Deena refused and decided to try dolphin-assisted therapy. She called Dolphins Plus and got permission to bring Joe. To the surprise of Lloyd Borgas, the owner, Deena arrived with Joe minutes after the call. Borgas was unsure about the wisdom of his generosity but led them to a platform where Joe met Fonzie, a playful dolphin.Joe’s reaction to Fonzie was positive, and Deena brought him back daily. Joe slowly began to recover from his depression. With each visit, he regained some movement on his left side. Trainers encouraged Joe to swim with Fonzie, and by mid-September, he was swimming with his new friend. Trainers challenged Joe to feed Fonzie with his left hand, helping him regain strength. Over the next two years, Joe fully recovered. Now a healthy teenager, Joe frequently visits Fonzie and helps his parents with Island Dolphin Care, a program Deena started to help other special-needs children. The program has been successful, helping many children and their families. Deena emphasizes that while dolphins have no special healing powers, the joy and laughter they bring to children can feel magical. 56.Why did Joe smile and laugh for the first time since his stroke?
