The days of stopping at one store and buying everything in one location are long
gone. We’ve put together a list of items you shouldn’t buy at some store and we show
you where to get them.
Tuna
Essentially a product from Chicken of the Sea,5-ounce cans of Van Camp’s Chunk
White Albacore Tuna in Water are available for $1 per can at Dollar Tree.A similar
product in the grocery store costs 59 cents more per can.
Olive Oil
Is it really worth buying expensive olive oil?We don’t think so.This 68-ounce Iberia
Premium Blend Extra Virgin Olive Oil sells at Target for $9.69.Reviewers love this
less-expensive alternative saying it’s great for everything.Compare it with a standard
17-ounce size of Bertolli Extra Virgin Olive Oil—much less oil, selling for roughly
the same $9.99 at the grocery store when it’s not on sale.
Vitamins
You might not realize the savings you can reap on vitamins simply by buying them at a
different store.A 100-count bottle of vitamin D softgels (软胶囊) can run to $11.29 at
Walmart.A 180-count bottle of Trader Joe’s vitamin D 1000 iu softgels is only
$11.99.That’s almost double the amount.
Storage Containers
For storing food, children’s supplies,or whatever your household needs maybe,
there’s nothing better than plastic storage containers. But why pay through the nose for
them?Albertsons has two half-cup Rubbermaid Easy-Find Lids food storagecontainers at $6.89.But you can buy six of those from Target for $7.99—four more for
about a dollar.
Socks
Whether you lose one in the dryer or just wear them out, socks should be replaced
once there’s a hole or the elastic (松紧带) gets loose.Dollar Tree has a good selection
of men’s,women’s,and children’s socks.Women’s mini-crew socks come in a three
-pair pack for $1.A three-pair pack of similar socks at Albertsons will cost $6.59
and there’s much less variety.
1.How much does a can of similar Tuna in the grocery store probably cost?
A.$9.69. B.$1.
C.$1.59. D.$7.99.
2.Which of the following items is best for storing food?
A.A plastic dryer.
B.A 100-count bottle.
C.A special storage container.
D.A plastic storage container.
3.Where can you buy cheaper socks?
A.At Trader Joe. B.At Dollar Tree.
C.At Albertsons. D.At Walmart.

The signs appeared practically overnight. They appeared everywhere. Each featured just
a few uplifting words in simple black type:“Don’t Give Up”“You Are Worthy of
Love”.At the high school in Newberg,Oregon, two students killed themselves that
year,so the town of 25,000 instantly understood the messages. For days, what no one
could figure out was who had planted them.
Amy Wolff had.She felt necessary to address Newberg’s grief. She planted the signs
anonymously (匿名地) because she wanted them to focus on the messages, not any
one person.
Yet as Wolff saw the deep influence her signs had on her neighbors, she decided toshare her messages publicly.Instantly, her mailbox was flooded with requests for more
signs.She asked a friend,graphic designer Jessica Brittell,to print more.“We decided
to just ride it out, just keep going until the orders stop,”says Wolff.
That was in May 2017.Since then, the Don’t Give Up Movement launched by Wolff
has spread from Newberg to the hearts and yards of people in every state and several
countries.Wolff charges only the cost of materials and shipping.“It’s a terrible
business decision if we wanted to function like a business,”she says.
One of the most heartening elements of the Don’t Give Up Movement is that it has
gone viral in a remarkably human way.People have taken to planting the signs in their
towns, taking selfies, and then posting them to share.
“It was the best feeling in the world that I could have an impact outside of school by
using these products,”says a teacher in Texas, teaching a lesson in unity after his
classroom moved online.“This was a good way to let them know that we care even
when we can’t see them.”
Wolff’s messages are about to grow yet again.“But there has never been a more fierce
backdrop to the power of hope and sympathetic action than right now,”Wolff shares.
4.What did Amy Wolff do in the town?
A.She decorated the town with simple black type.
B.She urged the town to admire the messages.
C.She persuaded the neighbors to be active.
D.She planted signs with uplifting words.
5.Why did Wolff choose to share her messages publicly?
A.To influence more people.
B.To address Newberg’s grief.
C.To raise people’s awareness.
D.To meet neighbors’ requests.
6.What did Wolff sacrifice to satisfy consumers’ needs?
A.Her spare time. B.Her own profits.
C.The delivering fees. D.The cost of materials.
7.What can we learn from Wolff’s story?A.Hard work leads to success.
B.Love can take us everywhere.
C.Great things are done by mass efforts.
D.Love or loving yourself could be wakened.

Prince William, second in line to the British throne, gave his first TED Talk on
Saturday to launch his Earthshot Prize,a competition that will award five £1 million
prizes every year for the next decade to those who can come up with solutions to
environmental problems.
Any person, group or organization around the world is qualified, and any suggestion is
welcome,so long as it is applicable globally. It could be a new technology,a new
approach,a new governmental policy or any other ideas toward five environmental
goals—fixing the climate,purifying the air,protecting nature,cleaning the ocean and
handling waste.
“Earthshot” was inspired by John F.Kennedy’s “Moonshot”,an ambitious 1961
mission to get a man on the moon within a decade. The purpose of the prize is partly to
arouse excitement and offer what Prince William called “a bit of a catalyst,a bit of
hope,a bit of positivity”at a time when the world needs those. The money will come
from donors around the world. The prize committee includes many celebrities.
Prince William has environmental activism in his blue blood (贵族血统).Both his
grandfather and his father Prince Charles were active environmentalists.Prince William
said he had always listened, learned and believed what they were saying about the
environment.Besides speaking wise words,he also puts forward a good prize.A million
pounds is significantly more than a Nobel Prize and should inspire some serious and
creative thinking about the difficulties of the planet Earth.Unlike the Nobel Prize
money, the Earthshot money is supposed to be spent on the winning project.“If we
achieve these goals,by 2030 our lives won’t be worse, and we won’t have to sacrifice
everything we enjoy.Instead, the way we live will be healthier, cleaner, smarter, and
better for all of us,”he said.8.What can be learned about The Earthshot Prize?
A.It will be awarded to Britons.
B.It aims to solve social problems.
C.It is named after a moon mission.
D.It offers £50 million in total.
9.A person can win the prize for ________.
A.a method to monitor sea level
B.a new technology to forecast the weather
C.a new approach to recycling the waste
D.a local government policy to ban fishing
10.What does the underlined word “catalyst” in Paragra-ph 3 mean?
A.Encouragement. B.Alarm.
C.Challenge. D.Surprise.
11.What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A.The Earthshot Prize equals the Nobel Prize.
B.Planet Earth will be cleaned by 2030.
C.Prince William only talks the talk.
D.Prince William is influenced by his family.

Scientists have successfully used satellite cameras to count animals in complex
geographical environments, taking environmentalists an important step forward in
monitoring populations of endangered species.
For this research, the satellite WorldView 3 used high-quality pictures to monitor
African elephants moving through forests and grasslands. The automated (自动化的)
system detected animals with the same accuracy as humans are able to achieve. The
new surveying technique, created by Dr.Olga Isupova at the University of Bath in the
UK with some other scientists, allows vast areas of land to be scanned in a matter of
minutes, offering a much-needed alternative to human observers counting individual
animals from low-flying airplanes. As it sweeps across the land,a satellite can collectover 5,000 km2 of imagery every few minutes, avoiding double counting.Where
necessary, the process can be repeated the next day.
The population of African elephants has nosedived over the past century, mainly due
to hunting illegally and habitat (栖息地) ruin. With only 40,000—50,000 elephants
left in the wild, the species is classified as endangered.
“Accurate monitoring is essential if we’re to save the species,”said Dr.Isupova.“We
need to know where the animals are and how many there are.”Satellite monitoring
avoids disturbing animals during data collection and ensures humans are not hurt in the
counting process. It also makes it simpler to count animals moving from country to
country,as satellites can orbit the planet without regard for border controls or conflict.
This study was not the first to use satellite pictures and algorithms (演算法) to monitor
species, but it was the first to reliably monitor animals moving through a complex
environment—that is,an environment that includes areas of open grassland, woodland
and partial coverage.“This type of work has been done before with whales, but of
course the ocean is all blue , so counting is a lot less challenging ,” said
Dr.Isupova.“As you can imagine,a complex environment makes it much harder to
identify animals.”
The researchers believe their work shows the potential of technology to support
environmentalists to protect biodiversity and to slow the progress of the sixth mass
extinction (灭绝)—the ongoing extinction event caused by human activity.
12.Why did the scientists create the satellite cameras?
A.To count animals in complex environments.
B.To increase the number of wild animals.
C.To train the skills of observing animals.
D.To drive the elephants out of forests in Africa.
13.What can we learn about the new surveying technique?
A.It’s individual. B.It’s complex.
C.It’s dangerous. D.It’s accurate.
14.What is the condition of African elephants?
A.They are rapidly increasing.B.They are in diversity.
C.They are rapidly reducing.
D.They are in balance.
15.What would be the best title for this passage?
A.Making the Satellite WorldView 3 for Biodiversity
B.Using Satellite to Monitor Endangered Species
C.Supporting Hunting with New Technology
D.Introducing Dr.Olga Isupova at the University of Bath

Negative thinking is the easiest way to slow down your business and personal
goals. But how do you get rid of negative thoughts? We asked members of the Forbes
Coaches Council for advice. The views varied widely, but they all had one idea in
common:__1__ Our experts gave us their best tips, and these are what they had to say.
·__2__
Do you want to catch a cold?Get around people with a cold.I am not sure whether the
advice still stands, but it certainly means something to me in coaching others.I see a lot
of people associating with like-minded and often negative people when they are
trying to change something in their lives , like a job.Negative people are not
optimistic.Get around the positivity physically, through your ears and eyes.
·Don’t expect everything to be perfect.
Expecting everything to be perfect can be disturbing and robs you of true
happiness.__3__ For example,if you will be promoted next year—instead of this year
as expected—does one year really change anything in the long run?Striving for goals
with detachment (超然) and a state of not having to be perfect can be a liberating (解
脱的) way to live on your own terms.
·Become intentional about your attitude.
__4__ It starts as soon as you wake up in the morning.Become aware when you are
focusing on the negative and make the decision to focus on the positive instead.Your
attitude is a choice. You attract what you focus on,so let go of what does not serve yourgoals.__5__
A.You are in control.
B.Get around positive people.
C.Assuming a positive attitude is an intentional action.
D.Change your attitudes whenever it is possible.
E.Make sure your vision of success is rooted in reality.
F.The trick is not to get caught up in your negative thoughts.
G.The more you practice positive mind-shifts,the easier it becomes.

There are many heritage sites in the world. The following are four sites in UNESCO’s
World Heritage List.Easter Island,Chile
This place is famous for its huge stone statues. The first European visitors, the Dutch,
named it Easter Island in memory of their day of arrival. The small and hilly island was
formed by volcanoes.Easter Island was added to UNESCO’s World Heritage List in
1995.
Dinosaur Provincial Park,Canada
The park is best known for its extensive fossil (化石) beds, within which 35 species of
dinosaurs from about 100 to 65 million years ago have been identified. There are also
fossilized remains of fish, reptiles, and amphibians. The area was listed as a UNESCO
World Heritage site in 1979.

intention of fighting from the wall top;the soldiers there were trained to encounter the
enemy in the open.In 1987,Hadrian’s Wall was recognized by UNESCO as a World
Heritage site.
Salonga National Park,Congo
This is the largest tropical rainforest reserve in Congo, covering about 36,000
km2.The park was established in 1970.The thick forest provides habitats for various
animals like parrots, elephants and monkeys.Park visitors observe the animals from
motorized riverboats. The park was entered into the list of UNESCO World Heritage
sites in 1984.

Looking back is a wonderful thing. It allows you to see what has led you here and,
hopefully, how society has changed and improved.
Take,for instance,my career goal.First,I wanted,in 1999,to be a “farmer”,soon
archaeologist, then driving instructor and somewhere along the way, footballer.
I had grown up in a football-loving family.I remember the exact moment when I said
“I’m sad I can’t be a footballer” while watching the game with Dad as a pre-
teen.He asked why not.“Because I’m not a boy.”He immediately responded,“You
can,if you want to.”“Yeah,I suppose so,”I sighed,“but no one watches
women’s football.”
Looking back,I can see exactly why I felt like that.At school, there was an unwritten
rule that sports like hockey and netball were “girl” sports and rugby and football were
for the boys.I’d never seen a women’s football match on TV.You see,you can’t be
what you can’t see,and lack of representation leads,at best,to misunderstanding,and
at worst,fear and negative opinions.
Today, the Lionesses took on Scotland in the World Cup,and people across the world
tuned in.But,although women’s football is one of FIFA’s best investments ,the
majority of female players are earning under a fair wage. Some argue that that’s
because viewing statistics are lower than those of men’s,but the rise in support shows
the demand is there.Hopefully, more investment will push female football forward.
Today,I’ll be cheering on the Lionesses, because it’ll mean talented, skillful female
footballers being broadcast into millions of homes and maybe, just maybe,a little girl
believing that she can also be a Lioness one day.4.Which of the following best describes the author’s career goals?
A.Realistic. B.Changeable.
C.Consistent. D.Long-sought.
5.Why didn’t the author believe she could be a footballer?
A.She was not talented enough.
B.People lost faith in women’s football.
C.Girls were forbidden to play football.
D.She had no example to follow.
6.What can we know about women’s football from Paragraph 5?
A.It’s better paid than men’s.
B.It is increasingly popular.
C.It has no market demand.
D.It is not profitable.
7.What does the text mainly want to tell us?
A.Society advances with time.
B.Women deserve equal rights.
C.Each goal is worth pursuing.
D.Hard work always pays off.

The idea that having narrow local focus leaves little room for anything but a selfish
mindset is a misconception, according to a new study that found that concern for local
affairs could help with global environmental conservation.
You might have heard of NIMBY which means “not in my backyard” and describes an
individual or a group opposed to a new addition to the neighborhood, typically a
factory, roadway or power station.Nimbyism and parochialism (狭隘主义), which are
a focus on a local area, can go hand in hand, and there are concerns that parochialism
paves the way for prejudice, narrow-mindedness, and selfishness.
But researchers found the exact opposite to be true in a newly published study. The
researchers argued that positive parochialism can inspire a larger awareness of globalenvironmental problems and encourage people to take action.
“We did not find evidence that parochialism was necessarily negative and inward-
looking,” said Patrick, a researcher for the study.“It can be those things, but there’s
no necessary conflict between feeling connected to your local area and feeling
connected to the wider world.”
For the study, the researchers reviewed documents from the 1987 Parish Maps
project. The researchers showed how the Parish Maps project also demonstrated a
passion for the environment and conservation. The researchers said that the Parish
Maps project is a strong example of “positive parochialism”, and shows that thinking
locally can influence a global mindset.
“For a long time, it has been generally agreed that if we want people to think about
global affairs they need an international world view—but this may not be the case,”
said Patrick.“Given where we are now in terms of trying to encourage people to make
changes to help the environment, positive parochialism offers something that has been
overlooked.”
8.Which behavior can best illustrate NIMBY?
A.Criticizing a friend for his selfish action.
B.Accepting a proposal beneficial to locals.
C.Supporting a neighborhood construction plan.
D.Objecting to building an airport in the neighborhood.
9.Why does the author mention the Parish Maps project?
A.To explain how to protect the environment.
B.To offer an example of positive parochialism.
C.To encourage people to take part in the project.
D.To stress the importance of a global mindset.
10.How does Patrick feel about the positive parochialism phenomenon?
A.Appreciative. B.Cautious.
C.Negative. D.Puzzled.
11.What may be the best title for the text?
A.Parochialism, a better practice?B.The international view, more popular?
C.Thinking locally, acting globally
D.Bigger thinking, better environment

On a scale of 0 to 10,I’d say my happiness ranks at about 6.I’m glad to know I’m a 6,
because,as a famous management saying puts it,“You can’t manage what you don’t
measure.”If you want to improve an aspect of your life, you need to be able to assess
progress toward your goal—and that means measuring it.
The goal of this column is to help you manage and improve your happiness.A number
of people have asked me whether quantitative happiness measures are really accurate
and reliable—and it’s a reasonable question.So let’s take a look behind the curtain.But
not just for intellectual curiosity;as you will see, understanding the measurement of
happiness can make you better at improving your own well-being—and avoid some
critical errors.
The best method scientists have to understand with confidence how something affects
something else is a randomized, controlled trial.Think of the tests currently under way
to find a vaccine for COVID -19.They take a long time because the drug companies
with trial vaccines are conducting experiments that randomly assign people to a
treatment group (they get the vaccine) and a control group (they get a placebo),and
then waiting to see if the drug is effective and safe by comparing the two groups after
enough time has passed.
In the research on happiness, this usually isn’t possible.Want to know if people in
Denmark are truly the happiest,as some studies suggest, and test it with a randomized
experiment? You would need to randomly take two groups out of their homes, move
one group to Copenhagen, and the other to,say,Dayton,Ohio—but make sure they
think it might be Copenhagen and never get the truth.Follow up a few years later to see
who is happier.Obviously , that’s ridiculous. So with randomized controlled trials
largely not available to them, happiness researchers instead rely on self-reported
happiness surveys, where large groups of people anonymously report their levels oflife satisfaction. Then, the researchers use fairly complex statistical techniques to
mimic (模仿) a controlled experiment in order to show how different aspects of
people’s lives affect—or at least are associated with—their happiness.
12.What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 1 probably refer to?
A.An aspect of life. B.One’s goal.
C.Happiness. D.Progress.
13.Why is the test of COVID-19 vaccine mentioned in Paragraph 3?
A.To introduce a latest medical breakthrough.
B.To show the difficulty in finding the vaccine.
C.To illustrate the process of randomized experiments.
D.To prove the impossibility of randomized research on happiness.
14.Why is it hard to conduct research on happiness with randomized experiments?
A.The experiment takes a long time.
B.It is difficult to analyze the data collected.
C.It is impossible to carry out the process strictly.
D.The subjects are unwilling to share their feelings.
15.Where is this text probably taken from?
A.A magazine. B.A diary.
C.A novel. D.A textbook.

Diversity comes in many forms:gender, race, age, culture, etc. All of these contribute
to an individual’s unique experience of the world. Here are some reasons why it is
significant in all aspects of our lives.
Productivity
Bringing together people of various backgrounds leads to new ideas.__1__ When
tackling an issue, wouldn’t it be better to have more than one understanding approach,
rather than everyone contributing the same thoughts and conclusions?
Becoming a World Citizen
If you experience diversity in your everyday life, you will be regularly exposed topeople, cultures, traditions, and practices that are unlike your own.Not only will you
improve your social development, but you will also increase your understanding of the
world.__2__
Growing Acceptance
Promoting diversity is the first step towards true acceptance.Through growing contact
with, and communication between new people, individuals may see that they may
have more in common than they thought.__3__ And that is okay, too!Increasing
familiarity with these differences can facilitate acceptance.
Richer Life Experience
Diversity is colorful! What if everyone who surrounded you was exactly like you,in
every way?__4__ We need new ideas, views, and practices to stimulate and inspire
us,and to show us the way others eat, celebrate, and love!
We must not forget to spread the word about the importance of diversity and to face the
world with a love and a celebration of our differences.__5__
A.Where is the fun in that?
B.Or,they may still be remarkably different.
C.Everyone has their own way of viewing a problem.
D.This will prepare you to be a part of a global society.
E.Is diversity something we should fight for in all aspects of our lives?
F.Hearing about another’s experience can provide you with a different idea.
G.Together, our differences make a strong and beautiful world community.
