The Maya city of Tikal is famous for its amazing palaces and temples. But something
far more ordinary kept Tikal functioning:its water-purifying system, the earliest
known of its kind.
Researchers recently discovered a volcanic mineral that traps microbes (微生物)and
heavy metals in Tikal’s largest reservoir (水库).Because the material is not found
nearby, the findings suggest the presence of a man-made water-purifying device.
The findings deny the long-standing idea that technological achievements of the
ancient worlds belonged to the Eastern world, like Egypt, and China. The leading
scientist of this research, Kenneth Tankersley says, “ When talking about
purifying water, the Maya were thousands of years ahead.”
Located in the forests of Central America, Tikal is thought to have been home to
more than 45,000 people. They had to struggle against a dry season lasting from
November to April.Storing water in reservoirs was a solution, but that water had to be
fit to drink, said Kenneth.“Keeping water clean was of great importance.”
A few years ago, the researchers were surprised to find that the largest reservoir,
Corriental, had significantly fewer harmful chemicals than the others.“The water
quality at Corriental was much higher.”
Somehow the Maya must have been purifying Corriental’s water, the team
assumed.“The Maya used gardens as their bathrooms, ”Kenneth said.“The water
coming into the reservoir would not have been very clean.”
At the bottom of Corriental, scientists found four separate layers, each a few
centimeters thick, of millimeter-scale “zeolites (沸石)”.This type of volcanic
mineral can purify water and is still in widespread use today, Kenneth says, “Just
about everything we drink, from bottled water to wine, runs through a zeolitepurifying device.”
The Maya wouldn’t have known about the zeolite in rock, but they would have
recognized the purifying effects, the researchers suggested.A zeolite-rich rock
formation about 30 kilometers northeast of Tikal is the likely source of the material
in Corriental, the team said last month in Scientific Reports.Water at this site “was
clear and tasted good”.

D.By spreading four layers of zeolites.
3. What can we learn from the research?
A.The Maya drank bottled water.

I like to believe that some things in life never change.A constant, ever since I could
hold a pen, has been the routine at lunch with my grandfather. My grandmother willask me how the walk from my parents’ house was before I take a seat at their kitchen
table.
My grandfather is sitting in his usual spot in the corner. He looks up for a quick
“hello” before heading back down to the crossword puzzle in front of him.
“So, how is this one coming along?” I’ll ask. With a failed laugh, he’ll slide the
crossword toward me.Carefully cut and neatly folded from his newspaper, three
quarters of it will already have been finished. Many of the clues (线索) are far too
advanced for me to figure out. However, I’m happy to help with the strange clue
related to sports—my expert knowledge that still remains.
Even if I’m certain of an answer, I fill in the squares with a pencil, as clues are always
checked thoroughly by my grandfather. In the rare event that we’re unable to finish the
crossword by the end of lunch, he’ll call me later that evening to go__over the clues
he later solved.
Today, lunch unfolds in its usual manner. However, large parts of the puzzle are
blank.“Grandfather, I think this is 49-down...and this, 52-across,” I say.
“Oh, right.Yes, put that down there,” he replies.
I reach across the table to hand him the crossword.Looking at him as he searches for
answers, suddenly I feel something different.I note his hair is whiter than I
remembered. For the first time I think about my grandfather as, well, a grandfather.
But life is about change—change we aren’t always prepared for.Just as we are on
different ends of life, we find ourselves on different ends of the city now too.But at
lunch, when we take up our pens and open the crossword, the world stands pleasantly
still. Now, instead of an exercise of quick wit ( 才思), our crosswords are about
patience and understanding. As clues are slowly understood, so are the truths in life.
