The bird in my hand looks delicate. I take a deep breath, focus on its bright yellow feather,
and think hard about the instructions I've been given: Hold the legs firmly but gently between your
fingers, and then release your grasp. When I do, the goldcrest—the smallest songbird in Europe—
disappears among the Pyrenees.
I'm standing in a green mountain meadow in Andorra, a European country. I've joined a small
band of volunteers on a nine-day expedition. Here in Andorra, ecologist Bernat Claramunt-López
is on a mission: a study of all parts of the alpine ecosystem to determine the effects of climate
change. Tricia Harris, a London-based project manager, and Tim Hoffman, an engineer, are my
fellow volunteers. On our first workday, we set off at dawn. Along with Claramunt-López and two biologists
Jana Marco, from Alicante, Spain, and Oriol Palau, based in Catalonia, we fill our backpacks with
the day's necessities.
We pair off, one volunteer with one scientist. Marco and I get small-mammal duty. We check
a piece of land where humane live traps have been installed to assess the animals' diversity.
Having reached a high plateau (高原), we travel back and forth, locating the black pine trees,
recording their growth, and checking bird nest boxes before hiking down to join the rest of the
group on a grassy slope.
Over the following days, we alternate partners, splitting off and regrouping as we take on the
remaining sites. Hiking, measuring, recording, we find ourselves falling into a rhythm as other
cares fall away.
By the end of the expedition, we've climbed 12 mountains, watched 108 nest boxes, tagged
35 mammals, banded 74 birds, and measured over a thousand trees. We're tired but also
surprisingly refreshed, knowing our hard work counts.Hoffman sums it up well when he says it's
given him “new insights about how I want to live my life.”
24.How does the author feel when holding the goldcrest in her hand?
A.Nervous. B.Guilty. C.Relieved. D.Frightened.
25.For what purpose is the expedition undertaken?
A.Adventure. B.Research. C.Relaxation. D.Education.
26.Why are the volunteers divided into groups?
A.To avoid potential trouble. B.To make sure of their safety.
C.To undertake different tasks. D.To help each other on the way.
27.What does the author want to tell in the last paragraph?
A.The high spirits of the volunteers.
B.The cooperation of the volunteers.
C.The destinations of the expedition.
D.The achievements of the expedition.

Kids can boost their brainpower by cooking, gardening and cleaning around the house,
according to new research. A study of 207 children found regular household tasks—like making
meals and caring for plants—are associated with better planning, self-regulation and rememberinginstructions. Lead researcher Deanna Tepper said the results suggest housework could have
benefits for children's executive (执行的) functioning.
Collected from children aged 5 to 13, the results show older children are more likely to do
housework than younger ones and girls do more housework than boys. For example, only 49 per
cent of boys but 70 per cent of girls make their own bed. Loading the dishwasher is a job for 55
per cent of children, including 50 per cent of boys and 61 per cent of girls. Only 34 per cent of
five to seven-year-olds do this task, rising to 64 per cent of those aged 11 to 13.“Parents may be
able to use age- and ability-appropriate housework to assist with the development of executive
functions,” Ms Tepper said.
“Children who cook a family meal or weed the garden on a regular basis may be more likely
to excel in other aspects of life—like schoolwork or problem solving.” Ms Tepper said making a
meal or cooking for others is linked to better working memory and the ability to think before
acting.
“Typically, these skills begin to develop in early childhood and continue to develop into late
adolescence (青春期) and early adulthood,” Ms Tepper said. “Damage or delays in executive
functioning development can lead to difficulties in the ability to self-regulate, plan and problem-
solve, having effects later in life on reading performance and mathematical ability, as well as
overall academic achievement in later childhood.”
The study was conducted during Covid lockdowns, with half of parents reporting that their
child was doing the same amount of housework as before the pandemic (流行病) and 37 per cent
saying their child was doing more.
28.How can doing housework benefit children?
A.By keeping their physical health.
B.By helping them learn more skills.
C.By improving the power of their brain.
D.By making their parents love them more.
29.What does the new research data focus on in paragraph 2?
A.Gender and age. B.Time and efficiency.
C.Status and discipline. D.Mood and intelligence.
30.What does the underlined word “excel” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A.Be calmer. B.Be better.C.Be braver. D.Be lovelier.
31.What can executive functions bring for children?
A.Rapid progress in acting.
B.Quality of pitying others.
C.Chance of challenging authorities.
D.Wonderful achievements in school.

Inspired by insects like bees that use collective construction techniques, a group of engineers
have designed a team of flying robots with the ability to create structures while staying in the air.
These 3D printing drones (无人机) can move on their own and place construction materials,
according to research published in Nature.
“We've proved the concept that drones can work autonomously and construct and repair
buildings, at least in the lab,” says Mirko Kovac, head of the materials and technology center of
robotics at Swiss research institute Empa and co-leader of the research. “This solution could help
construction and repair in difficult-to-reach areas, like tall buildings.”
3D printing is already used to enhance the efficiency and safety of some construction
projects. However, the large size of current 3D printing technology as well as the fact that this
equipment is typically connected to a fixed power supply limits these machines' ability to build in
tough environments that may be difficult to access.
To overcome these limitations, this new technology uses two types of aerial drones that work
together. The “BuilDrone” uses a depositing nozzle (浇筑喷嘴) to unload physical building
materials and the “ScanDrone” observes and analyzes the former's depositing operations.“These
solutions can actually be very cost-effective, and efficient,” said Vijay Pawar, a study co-author
and computer science researcher at University College London in England.
Within the study, the first of the towers the drones constructed stood nearly seven feet tall,
which highlighted the possibility of building larger structures with the use of up to 15 robots. The
second measured just seven inches. In the future, the drones could 3D print temporary homes for
displaced people or make repairs to buildings during a blackout.
With the help of the drones that can make choices throughout the building process, future
architects will have the opportunity to alter building designs in the middle of construction andadapt their projects to complex environments, says study co-leader Robert Stuart-Smith, a 3D
printing researcher at the University of Pennsylvania, America.
32.What does Mirko Kovac mainly talk about in paragraph 2?
A.The significance of 3D printing drones.
B.The concept of 3D printing technology.
C.The applications of 3D printing technology.
D.The difficulties of building 3D printing drones.
33.Why does the author mention the limitations of current 3D printing technology?
A.To foretell the future of the 3D printing drones.
B.To stress the urgency of 3D printing technology.
C.To show the advantages of the 3D printing drones.
D.To point out the demand for more efficient 3D printing.
34.What might have contributed to the birth of 3D printing drones?
A.The optimism of the researchers in tough situations.
B.The cooperation among experts from across the world.
C.The wide application of 3D technology in different fields.
D.The urgent need for more practical construction technology.
35.What might be the best title for the text?
A.3D printing drones could fly above construction sites
B.3D printing drones are used in difficult-to-repair houses
C.3D printing drones are intended for secure construction
D.3D printing drones could alter the future of construction

When's the last time you looked away from your computer? If you're anything like me, it's
been a while, which might be slowing both of us down. 3 6 The problem: it's hard to
remember to take some time to rest, so you may have to force the issue.
Schedule your breaks into your day
If you, like me, live by your calendar, this tip is so important. Don't assume you'll remember
to take breaks throughout the day. 3 7 Treat your breaks the same way you would treat a
meeting or any other appointment you don't want to forget about. If that doesn't work, considersetting up recurring (循环的) alarms on your phone. The key is to plan breaks ahead of time and
follow those plans.
This advice will be even easier to follow if you make a habit out of it. You could take a walk
every day at 10 am, or make yourself a cup of tea every afternoon at 2 pm. 3 8
Use a special app to force the issue
3 9 So it isn't an approach that will work for everyone. If you're someone who struggles
to take breaks even when you know you should, I recommend installing an application that will
actually force you to take breaks. 4 0 It effectively forces you to stop. Each time, the
application also offers a suggestion for how to spend your break, like turning your head toward
natural light or doing some basic stretching.
A.It appears over whatever you're doing.
B.Taking regular breaks can improve your focus.
C.Turn on notifications so you don't miss any.
D.The method above relies on you to stop working.
E.Add the breaks to whatever calendar application you use.
F.Those are just two of countless examples that make you happy.
G.Build these breaks into a routine and you'll find it is easier to stick to.

第二节 (满分25分)
阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。“No. Stop laughing. I just want to sing.” Dylan woke up. He had that terrible dream again.
When he was in the eighth grade, he entered his school's talent show. The moment he started to
sing, the kids started laughing at him. No matter what others thought of him, singing was always
something that made him feel like life wasn't as unfair as it really was.
He finally got out of bed and let out a sigh, got washed up, dressed in a dark blue shirt and
dark blue jeans, and headed downstairs to have breakfast. “Morning, honey,” his mom smiled.
“Morning, Mom,” Dylan smiled back. He loved his mom. She was one of the few people
who cared about him even though she had had cancer. “Good luck, Dylan. You'll do great,” his
mom told him. “Sure,” he simply replied. That's what she thinks, he thought.
Dylan was in science class and the teacher was giving a lesson about cancer. When the
teacher talked about cancer, Dylan felt his stomach drop. Even though his mom was in remission
(缓解), every day he worried if the cancer would come back. If he lost her, he didn't know what he
would do. He felt that he was going to come apart. Dylan asked the teacher for a leave and then
walked slowly to the bathroom.
When he finally stopped crying, he started to sing one of his favorite songs: Simon by
Lifehouse. It was a song about feeling alone and having a friend who helped you. Dylan didn't
have any friends and wasn't sure if he ever would, but he had his mom and that was enough. As he
sang it, he started to forget about what happened in science class. Singing always made him feel
alive. Then he saw a tall boy standing there.
“I'm Ty. Nice to meet you,” the boy said with a smile.
“I'm Dylan,” he whispered.
