A Century in Circulation
This year's annual classics collection is particularly special, given that it is the magazine's
100th anniversary year. Peeling back the covers of the thousands of editions, published in
numerous countries, and dating back to the first issue in February 1922, is always a task we enjoy
doing.
This collection offers a wide range of different subjects. Each one we hope will inform,
delight, amuse and perhaps even confound our readers: from stepping inside the French artist
Pierre-Auguste Renoir's inner circle of friends (Page 84), to finding peace from depression in a
solitary walk on the beach (Page 92) and meeting a cat who held a family together as they began
to fall apart (Page 20). My favorite article, Exploits of Charles (Page 100), is written by a
mother about the increasingly odd behavior of a little boy in her young son's kindergarten class. I
am sure you'll enjoy this amusing account of a small boy adjusting to his new classmates and
teachers. With an endless supply of wonderful stories, surprising insights and experiences to share,
Reader's Digest remains a place to find fresh perspectives and a great read.
Happy reading!

For many of us, asking for help is a difficult concept. We may feel as if we are admitting a
weakness that the world would not have known about, had we not asked for help.
However, people who are able to deliver well-positioned requests for help are often seen as
very strong individuals. When they demonstrate the humility (谦卑) to ask for help, they earn the
respect of others. People who receive a heartfelt request for help are usually honored by the
request. In turn, we are strengthened by the very help that is provided.
One of my clients named Kira recently made a shift in how she was interacting with her boss.
When asked to prepare presentations, she assumed that she was expected to develop the content,
deliver it at the required meeting and then wait for feedback from her boss. However, Kira
recognized that she had not yet made use of her boss's support. She could learn far more about
creating attractive presentations by walking through a draft with her boss and obtaining feedback
earlier in the process rather than at the back end. So she made the request for his support. The outcome? Her boss was delighted to coach Kira and was enthusiastic about teaching
presentation skills to her. By taking the time to work together on presentation for a number of
Kira's key presentations, she benefited from her boss's thought process and thus improved her own
presentations. Kira ' s presentations now have punch!
Some of us are uncomfortable asking for help because we believe that our request places
burdens on the other person. However, we may miss an opportunity to show others how we value
and respect them. People who know you and think well of you are often highly motivated to help.
Furthermore, the more specific you can be about what you need from them, the easier it is for
them to assist you.
24.Which of the following may the author agree with?
A.Helping others is helping oneself.
B.Weak people often need more help.
C.Asking for help means admitting weaknesses.
D.Well-positioned requests for help are welcomed.
25.What can we learn about Kira's request for help?
A.It was turned down. B.It benefited her boss.
C.It turned out rewarding. D.It led to her promotion.
26.What does “Kira's presentations now have punch!” underlined in paragraph 4 mean?
A.Her presentations are effortless. B.Her presentations are effective.
C.Her presentations are educative. D.Her presentations are controversial.
27.What's the purpose of the text?
A.To illustrate how to ask for help.
B.To encourage people to ask for help.
C.To call for attention to others' requests.
D.To show the importance of helping each other.

Do you sit with your legs crossed? One study found that two-thirds of people cross their right
leg over their left knee rather than the other way around. Maybe you are one of them. The crucial
question is:Is sitting with your legs crossed bad for you? Let's investigate.
It has been rumoured (谣传) that crossing your legs cuts off circulation and there is some
truth to that. However, crossing your legs at the knee or ankle isn't as bad as you may think.Multiple studies have examined crossing legs and its links to various health conditions, such as
elevated blood pressure and joint pain. Crossing your legs can only have a bad effect on your
health if you've been sitting in the same position for many hours, which may cause peroneal nerve
palsy (腓神经麻痹). Not to worry because this condition rarely occurs, humans are creatures of
habit, so sitting in one position for so long usually isn't comfortable, which means that we're
always moving around.
Varicose veins are claimed to be another health effect of crossing your legs. Varicose veins
are a condition that occurs when blood begins to fill inside stretched and weakened veins, which
results in them becoming enlarged. But this effect has also been proven to be rarely caused by just
crossing your legs. Studies have said that sitting for more than three hours with your legs crossed
causes your spine (脊椎) to become more arched and your shoulders to raise forward. This,
however, has been proven a myth.
As the saying goes, too much of one thing can be bad for you. Crossing your legs is only bad
for you if you sit in the same position for over three hours straight, which most people don't do.
Crossing your legs at your ankles has shown to have no effect on your health at all. So if you like
to sit with your legs crossed, continue to do so.
28.What is the function of paragraph 1?
A.To present a finding. B.To warn the readers.
C.To introduce the topic. D.To question the study.
29.What are paragraphs 2 and 3 mainly about?
A.The harm rumour does to people.
B.The problems caused by sitting for long.
C.The effects crossing legs has on health.
D.The ways of making crossing legs comfortable.
30.What does the author suggest people do in paragraph 4?
A.Understand the significance of right advice.
B.Learn how to adjust the posture.
C.Stick to what you think is right.
D.Do things in a proper way.
31.Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Crossing your legs is not a contributor to bad postureB.Is sitting with your legs crossed bad for you?
C.Are you reminded to uncross your legs?
D.Humans are creatures of habit

It would be an understatement to say that mussels (贻贝) and other mollusks usually aren't
thought of as being particularly active. Recently, however, scientists have documented a water-
squirting (喷水) behavior in just one species, which is apparently using the action to give its
larvae (幼虫) a fighting chance.
For the study, a University of Cambridge team led by Prof David Aldridge observed
freshwater Unio crassus mussels in Poland's Biala Tarnowska River in the springtime. There were
some reports of the mussels repeatedly squirting water from the bank of the river, but the
phenomenon had never been scientifically documented—or understood.
The scientists did indeed witness female mussels moving to the river's edge, raising their
back out of the water, then squirting water up to 1 meter (3.3 feet) out into the river. They would
do so for three to six hours at a time. Like other freshwater mussels, Unio crassus release their
larvae into the water, where they become attached to the bodies of passing fish. There, the larvae
develop into young mussels, at which point they drop off and settle on the riverbed. In many
cases, the larvae will only survive on certain types of fish and this is particularly true of Unio
crassus larvae.
With this challenge to survival in mind, the scientists guessed that the water-squirting
behavior is intended to attract appropriate fish—such as minnows and chub—and to deliver the
larvae to them. Sure enough, when water-squirts collected from multiple mussels were analyzed,
they were all found to contain viable (能存活的) mussel larvae.
“Who'd have thought that a mussel, which doesn't even have a head or a brain, knows how
to move to the river's edge and squirt jets of water back into the river during springtime?” said
Aldridge. “It's amazing.”
The unique behavior may also be at least part of the reason why Unio crassus is an
endangered species. By moving to the river's edge, female mussels are more easily hurt by
predators from land such as mink, and they may be threatened by flooding or destruction of the
shoreline.32.Why do female Unio crassus mussels squirt water?
A.To attract mates.
B.To feed their larvae.
C.To scare away predators.
D.To attract appropriate fish and deliver larvae to them.
33.How did the researchers conduct the study?
A.By collecting previous data. B.By watching documentaries.
C.By observing on spot. D.By analysing reports.
34.Which factor might contribute to Unio crassus mussels' being an endangered species?
A.Squirting water from the bank of the river.
B.Competition with other mussels.
C.Water pollution.
D.Overfishing.
35.Which of the following can be the most suitable title for the text?
A.The role of fish in mussel reproduction
B.The dangers faced by endangered mussels
C.The unique behaviors of mussels and mollusks
D.The survival secret of water-squirting mussels

From the moment we wake up each day, we're faced with a continuous stream of choices.
When there are too many options, we tend to feel overwhelmed, anxious, stressed or out of sorts.
This is decision fatigue—a state of mental overload that can block our ability to make decisions.
36 : You either stop making decisions completely, or you'll make impulsive choices.
While you may not be able to avoid decision fatigue entirely, you can take steps to minimize
or manage it.
3 7 . Some easy ways to do this: When you go grocery shopping, use a master list that has
the same staples (主食), and buy the same brands each time. And if you're trying to exercise
regularly, dedicate a consistent chunk of time for it every day.Pace yourself. Take regular breaks in your day to refresh your brain. 3 8 . Staying
nourished is key to feeling grounded and focused.

Tune into your feelings. 4 0 . If you've had a demanding day that was filled with lots of
decisions and you find things that wouldn't normally disturb you start bothering you, try putting
off any other decisions that day. Be gentle on yourself and try to relax and take things easy.

第二节 (满分25分)
阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。
In a small village at the foot of a mountain, there lived a young girl named Lily. She lived
with her mother in a simple cottage at the edge of the village. They were poor, but they were
happy with their simple life. They had each other, and that was all that mattered. Lily's mother was
a kind and gentle woman who worked hard to provide for her daughter. She would rise early each
morning to tend to their small garden and then spend the rest of the day weaving baskets to sell at
the market. Lily would often accompany her mother to the market and help sell wares.
One day, tragedy struck when Lily's mother fell ill. She could no longer work and their
limited savings were quickly exhausted by the cost of medicine and food. Lily was heartbroken
and didn't know what to do. She prayed for her mother's recovery and did everything she could to
care for her. As the days passed and her mother's condition worsened, Lily knew she had to do
something. She decided to leave the village and go to the city to find work. It was a difficult
decision, but she knew it was the only way she could provide for her mother.
Lily packed a small bag with her belongings and set off on foot for the city. It was a long and
tough journey, but she was determined to succeed. When she finally arrived in the city, she
searched for work and eventually found a job as a maid in a wealthy household. The work was
hard and the hours were long, but Lily didn't mind. She was grateful to have a job and sent all the
money she earned back to her mother in the village. Months passed and Lily's mother slowly
began to recover.
