BThere were medical decisions to be made. I didn't know the options. It shook me to my core.
Tears blurred my vision. I got off the highway and pulled into a nearly empty parking lot near the
river.
“Accept the things I cannot change,” I whispered. “But how do I find the courage to change
the things I can?” Suddenly, I became aware of saxophone music. It was coming from a young
man in rags along the riverbank.
“What would you like to hear?” he asked self-consciously. “Do you know any Christmas
songs? Would you mind if I videoed the song with my phone?” Thinking a moment, he nodded.
As soon as he started playing, he became oblivious (不在意的) to his surroundings. My tears
rolled down my cheeks, but I managed to capture the whole song. When he finished, I thanked
him and attempted to hand him a twenty-dollar bill.
He shook his head, “No. I'm just practicing.” “Me, too!” I insisted. “It's the first time I've
been kind to others and spread Christmas cheer. Please help me do that by accepting this money.”
He hesitated, and then said, “I guess that would be okay.” He took the bill and placed it into
his jeans' pocket.
“Merry Christmas,” I said, hurriedly heading back to my car. I didn't want him to see me
getting all emotional. I was afraid he might think he didn't play the song well enough. But the
song had been perfect. We had shared a moment. The music had washed across my soul and
soothed my soul. I was suddenly absolutely sure of two things: My health would be just fine; the
world could become a kinder, softer, gentler place if each of us embraced our “moments” of true
human connection, one small saxophone kindness at a time.
The best way to spread Christmas cheer is playing bravely for all to hear. And, in my heart,
my Christmas gift of this year was that I found the courage to change the things I can.

For many, the “dog days”, remind them of those summer days that are so hot that even dogs
would lie around on the road, breathing quickly with their mouths open. But originally, the phrase
had nothing to do with dogs, or even with the lazy days of summer. Instead, the dog days refer to
Sirius (天狼星), the brightest star in the constellation Canis Major, which means “big dog” in
Latin and is said to represent one of Orion's hunting dogs.
To the Greeks and Romans, the “dog days” occurred around the time Sirius appears to rise
alongside the sun, in late July in the Northern Hemisphere. They believed the heat from the two
stars combined is what made these days the hottest of the year, a period that could bring fever or
even disasters.
So, did the Greeks get it right? Are the dog days, around when Sirius rises, really the hottest
days of the year?
Although July and August are often the hottest months of the year in the Northern
Hemisphere, the hottest period can vary from year to year. And depending on your latitude, the
astronomical dog days can come at different times. There's another reason that the dog days don't
correspond neatly with the heat: The stars in Earth's night sky shift independently of our calendar
seasons.
“Our Earth is like a spinning top (旋转陀螺),” said Bradley Schaefer, professor of physics
and astronomy at Louisiana State University. “If you toss it onto a table, after it slows down, the
pointing direction of the top will slowly go around in circles.” Similarly to a top, “The Earth's spin
is kind of wobbling (摇摆) around.”
“The calendar is fixed according to certain events, but the stars have shifted according to the
way that the Earth wobbles,” said Larry Ciupik, astronomer at Adler Planetarium. “So in about 50-
some years, the sky shifts about one degree.”
“In 26,000 years, the dog days would completely move all around the sky,” said Schaefer.
“Roughly 13,000 years from now, Sirius will be rising with the sun in mid-winter.”Ah yes, the dog days of winter. When it's so cold that even the dogs lie around the fire, try to
stay warm.
28.What is the origin of the phrase “dog days”?
A.A bright star. B.Hot summer days.
C.Lazy dogs. D.Orion's hunting dogs.
29.What would happen during dog days according to the Greeks and Romans?
A.Two stars would rise with the sun. B.The night sky would be brighter.
C.Dogs would go crazy. D.The Earth would be extra hot.
30.Why is a spinning top mentioned in paragraph 5?
A.To illustrate the varying distance of the stars.
B.To explain how the stars in the sky shift.
C.To describe the angle of the Earth's spin.
D.To show how the Earth moves around the sun.
31.What can we infer from the text?
A.Sirius will not rise at Southern Hemisphere.
B.“Dog days” may live on with a new meaning.
C.Summer may no longer be as hot as it is now.
D.Dogs are adaptable animals to climate change.

A study published in Nature revealed a concerning link between the climate crisis and high-
intensity agriculture, which is pushing insect ecosystems toward collapse in some parts of the
world. The research showed that in places where impacts are high, insect abundance has dropped
by nearly 50%, while species have decreased by 27%.
Losing insects could threaten human health and food security, given their importance in local
ecosystems, pollination (授粉), and food production. Around three-quarters of crops depend on
insect pollinators, and without insects, crops could fail, making it impossible to feed 8 billion
people. The findings may only represent “the tip of the iceberg” due to limited evidence in some
regions. Scientists don't yet know when insect populations could reach a point of no return, and
the loss of insects could cause whole ecosystems to collapse.
The study highlights the effects of high-intensity agriculture, including the use of chemical
pesticides, low crop diversity, large field size, and high livestock density. Extreme land use has acompound effect with the climate crisis, and destroying natural habitats for agriculture can
dramatically alter the area's local climate and trigger temperature extremes. In areas with low-
intensity agriculture, less climate warming, and a nearby natural habitat, insects only declined by
7%, compared to the 63% decrease in areas with less natural habitat cover. The researchers
analyzed data from a 20-year period for more than 6,000 locations and studied nearly 18,000
insect species, including butterflies, moths, dragonflies, grasshoppers, and bees.
The study's authors suggest planting more native species and wildflowers, reducing pesticides
used in gardens, limiting the frequency of lawn mowing, and thinking more broadly about
protecting insects in other areas. The recent UN report on adapting to the climate crisis underlined
the world's ecosystems' connection to human systems, and unless heat-trapping emissions are
slashed, those systems will continue to see major losses in biodiversity, particularly insects.
32.What's the findings of the study?
A.Insect populations could reach a point of no return.
B.Climate crisis makes agriculture go without insects.
C.The loss of insects causes whole ecosystems to collapse.
D.High-intensity agriculture affects insect ecosystems dramatically.
33.Which of the following do researchers agree with to protect insects?
A.Increasing livestock density.
B.Using chemical pesticides at right time.
C.Growing more native species and wildflowers.
D.Producing more natural habitats for agriculture.
34.What does the underlined word “slashed” in the last paragraph mean?
A.Decreased. B.Lost. C.Stabilized. D.Preserved.
35.What would be the best title for the text?
A.Climate crisis: A killer for most insects
B.High-intensity agriculture: A disaster for insects
C.An advocated method: Low-intensity agriculture
D.Climate crisis: A threat to human health and food security

余选项。How to stop the decline of public transport in rich countries? To those who have to squeeze
onto the number 25 bus in London, or the A-train in New York, the change might not be
noticeable. 3 6
Although transport agencies blame it on things like roadworks and broken signals, it seems
more likely that they are being out-competed. 3 7 Other upstarts like dock-less bicycles and
battery powered “e-bikes” are also spreading. Mass transport, on the other hand, is much less
flexible.
This is a headache for the operators of public transport systems. 3 8 But like it or not,
public transport does some things very well. It provides services for people who are too old, too
young, too fearful or too drunk to drive or ride a bike. Trains and subways cause less pollution
than cars and move people at far higher densities (密度).
So, how to deal with the problem? 3 9 Some cities have created congestion (拥堵)
charging zones, but that is a hopelessly crude tool. Most congestion zones in effect sell daily
tickets to drive around as much as you like within the zone—and charge vehicles such as taxis and
minicabs nothing.
4 0 Although new forms of transport often compete with old ones, they ought to go well
with each other. Taxi services and app-based cars could get people to and from airports and ports,
which are often far from the urban core.
A.It is also a problem for cities.
B.It is probably the ideal plan to keep cities moving.
C.Transport agencies should also accept the upstarts.
D.To some extent, pricing road use properly can be a solution.
E.But passenger numbers are flat or falling in many countries.
F.App-based taxi services are more convenient than trains or buses.
G.Building a platform to allow that is hard, and requires joint efforts.

Rick, a ten-year-old boy, was constantly angry at everything around him. He always fought
in school with the other kids. Once he had an outburst in school. Upset by something a classmate
said to him, he pushed the boy, and a fight happened. When the teacher stepped in to break it up,
Rick went crazy, throwing papers and books around the classroom and rushing out. His teachers
couldn't say anything that would comfort the kid. And the parents of his schoolmates were getting
concerned. Rick was earning quite the reputation. After talking with school officials, Rick's mom
tried everything she could to calm Rick down.
She tried different methods until one day she came home with a canvas (画布) and paint.
“What's this?” Rick asked. Rick's mom handed over the painting equipment and said, “Whenever
you feel angry, paint whatever you're angry about instead of bursting out.” Rick wasn't that happy
about it but he gave it a try anyway. Over the next few weeks, the young boy created several
artworks. They mostly showed disturbing images though. So his mom took all of the paintings and
called Rick over so that they could talk about them. “Tell me, Rick. What are these paintings
about?”
“Well, the first painting is about how some of the kids show off their new clothes and pencil
cases. The next painting is about my teacher who keeps telling me about how I'm doing things
wrong. And the last painting is about how one of my schoolmate's father suggested that I change
my attitude. All of them make me so angry.” Rick's mom, in a calm voice, took Rick by her side
and told him: “Don't you see it, Rick?” “See what?” Rick asked. “You're so angry at all of these
things but not once did you try to understand why you're getting so angry. What have all these
people done to you, really?”
