“Okay,” said our teacher, Mrs. Woodland:“It’s time for the gift exchange.” I was actually a
little excited. I knew what a lot of the girls had brought, and any of those gifts would be great,
especially my best friend Sara’s. She had made some candy and put it in this super cute bear mug(马
克杯).
Mrs. Woodland had us put our gifts on our classroom table. Then we opened the gifts like a
game. We each drew numbers and we got to the table and chose a wrapped(包装好的) gift when our
number was called. But we didn’t necessarily have to. We could take a gift from somebody else that
had already had their number called—if we thought we’d like that gift better than the wrapped ones.
When it was my turn, I didn’t take a wrapped gift from the table. And I didn’t take Sara’s either
though I really wanted to. I took the perfume(香水) Megan had brought instead. I didn’t have enough
money to get Mom something special, but the perfume was really nice. She might really like it.
I was busy thinking about the perfume and whether Mom would like it or not when there was a
big commotion(嘈杂). It had been Hannah’ s turn to choose. She was the last one. And
unsurprisingly, she didn’t go for the last wrapped gift on the table. Instead, she’d taken Sara’s gift
from Lauren. Well, that meant Lauren had to take the wrapped gift. She looked a little upset when
she got to the table. Everyone knew the last gift was from Kali. That was why no one had chosen it.
Kali was really poor. And she always brought gifts that no one ever wanted. This time, she brought a
pair of old—fashioned crocheted potholders(编织的防烫套垫)!
“I don’t want these,” Lauren whined(哀怨).“I want my candy back.”
“No way,” Hannah protested, keeping the mug of chocolate out of Lauren’s reach.
“Then I want Megan’s perfume.” Lauren came over to take my perfume. “Come on, Melanie,
trade with me.”
Paragraph 1:
Mrs. Woodland advised me to trade with Lauren since I had always been kind.
Paragraph 2:
“Here,” I said to my mom after I got home, handing her the potholders. “They are an early
New Year gift.”

Paragraph1:
Mrs. Woodland advised me to trade with Lauren since I had always been kind. But I was unwilling to give it
up because that was for my mum. Then I noticed Kali sitting silently in the back of the classroom. Suddenly I felt
ashamed of myself. She had obviously worked hard on the potholders. “Sure,I will take the potholders,” I said to
Mrs. Woodland. I gave my best effort to smile and glanced over at Kali. “Did you make them yourself? They are
really pretty.” I said to Kali. Kali nodded and smiled.
Paragraph 2:
“Here,” I said to my mom after I got home, handing her the potholders. “They are an early New Year gift.”
Mom seemed so excited and cheerful that I was worried she thought I made them. I quickly explained that they
were made by Kali. Mom smiled and told me she had already known. It turned out that Mrs. Woodland had called
to tell her everything happening in the classroom. Mom praised me for handling the situation wonderfully and
growing to be a thoughtful young woman. She told me that was the best gift a mother could ask for.

结合续写的两个段首句,可知第一段主要内容“我”不愿意换礼物到愿意换礼物的心理和动作描写;

It was a cool evening in spring. I was just finishing the dinner dishes when the phone rang. It
was unusual because our landline seldom rang. Nearly everyone we knew contacted us on our cell
phones.
“This is Janet Rhodes.” said a familiar voice that I struggled to place. That name seemed
familiar, too. I knew a lot of people, having lived on two coasts and in most major cities in California
for the past thirty years.
“I am calling because I need to apologize to you,” Janet stated. That’s when I suddenly realized
who she was.
“That day when I came into your classroom and chewed you out for disciplining my daughter, I
was way out of line. I know now that you were doing what was best for her. You were right.”
Twenty years earlier, it was only my second year of teaching. Janet’s daughter, Stephanie, had
acted out toward some of the other girls in the classroom, and I had made her stay in from breaks
between classes. I was kind and fair when I punished her. The truth is that I really liked Stephanie,
but she clearly didn’t like being disciplined. She told her mother, and Janet felt the need to defend
her child.
After school, she flew into my classroom and accused me of everything from being unfair to
playing favorites to not caring about my students. She was yelling so loudly that every teacher in the
building heard her accusations, including my principal.
Her words shocked me because none of her criticisms was true. I managed to keep from crying
while she stood in front of me, but as soon as she left the room, I broke down. I cried all evening on
and off through that sleepless night. I had once felt such joy teaching my kids, but now I felt like I
was under a microscope in my classroom. For the next few weeks, her words caused me to second-
guess everything I did with my students. I doubted my ability and even my own heart. Despite how
her mother had treated me, I knew I would discipline Stephanie again if she acted out. It was the
right thing to do.
Paragraph 1:

And now, two decades later, the angry mother was a pologizing to me. The hurtful thing had become ancient
history to me, though her accusations affected me too deeply for much too long. I’ve now learned to process
criticisms much more quickly, accepting what’s true, dismissing what’s not, and moving on with my mission in life.
So, in essence, her apology wasn’t necessary for my wellbeing because I had done the work of restoration on my
own. I was grateful for that. On the other hand, how much courage this lady had to make this call! It moved me.
“Can you find it in your heart to forgive me?” Janet asked finally. I responded that she was a hero to me.
After all these years, she could have just forgotten about that. But she went to such effort to make things right. I
was both blessed and impressed. We spent the rest of our short conversation about Stephanie before we hung up. As
I reflect on that evening, I am still in awe at Janet’s growth, courage, and determination to apologize for the hurt
she caused so many years ago. Her apology truly was an unexpected blessing.
