Walking home from school, I am enjoying my day. Each day I stop to hear music coming from the ivy (常春
藤). Sparrow (麻雀) song, a loud glorious sound. The ivy is pulsing below a leafless tree, decorating around the
lower trunk like a celebration. Nervous flittings, in and out, pecking at the branches. This ivy is a home for them,
harboring an entire flock. But this scene is no longer ubiquitous. Numbers have declined by almost 70% in the UK
since 1970. Sparrows make their homes near human places and finding a tree like this is a blessing. Happily, the ivy
is still full of chatter and twitter.
In Greek mythology, sparrows are sacred and often associated with the goddess Aphrodite, symbolizing true
love and spiritual connection. I wonder how many people look at sparrows and feel that depth of connection. All
birds live brightly in our imagination, connecting us to the natural world, opening up all kinds of creativity.
As I stand there, fluffed-up sparrows in conversation among themselves, there is a spark. Noticing nature is
the start of it all. Slow down to listen, to watch. Take the time, despite mountains of homework.
Take the time to observe nature, to immerse oneself in its patterns, structures, happenings and rhythms. It is
how mathematicians and scientists are nurtured. Alan Turing studied the patterns in nature: the arrangement of
petals on the flower, spots on a leopard and stripes on a zebra. He was looking for a mathematical formula (公式)
for the development of cells in living things. Nature sparks creativity. All we have to do is start with the question,
Why? The way my mind whirrs and whirls in nature, or even when “daydreaming” is way more productive than the
work I do in school.
I consolidate myself by thinking and thinking while intensely watching the movements of sparrows. Who
knows where watching sparrows will lead?
4.What do I do on the way home from school?
A.Listen to pop music. B.Decorate the tree.
C.Clean up the trunk. D.Observe the sparrows.
5.What does the underlined word “ubiquitous” in paragraph 1 probably mean?
A.Unusual. B.Delightful. C.Common. D.Horrible.
6.What is the author’s purpose in mentioning Greek mythology?
A.To show the imagination of humans. B.To stress the significance of sparrows.
C.To introduce the power of Aphrodite. D.To demonstrate the diversity of species.
7.What can we learn from paragraph 4 of the text?
A.Nature facilitates cell development. B.Nature follows rigid patterns.
C.Nature is a source of inspiration. D.Nature offers companionship.C

Every year during Halloween, it’s likely homes around the neighborhood will put up some spider webs as
their spooky (恐怖的) decorations. But people were asked to stop using fake spider webs last year because they
pose a huge danger to natural wildlife.
The fake webbing is considered a danger to birds, bats and other small animals as they are often attracted to
the decoration and get caught, resulting in injuries or sometimes even death. What’s more, when blown around by
the wind, fake Halloween spider webs often end up in public spaces like parks and beaches, attracting wildlife.
Since they are not biodegradable (可生物降解的), they can linger for months or even years, posing a continuous
threat to the environment and animals.
Last year, government authorities actively used social media to warn about the dangers posed by popular
Halloween decorations. One post advised: “Please avoid using fake spider webs when decorating your home. They
can be very harmful to wildlife, especially birds, which often mistake spider silk for building their nests and cannot
distinguish between real and synthetic webbing. This can lead to birds and their young becoming entangled, along
with bats, insects and other wildlife.”
The Paws & Recover Facebook group posted a reminder about the dangers of synthetic webbing,
generating over 700 comments from people expressing how much they loathe the decoration due to the great harm
it causes to precious wildlife.
Wildlife experts have urged people to use larger, safer decorations that don’t endanger animals.
Compassionate individuals have also shared advice online. “Here I am, ready to spoil your Halloween decorating
fun! PLEASE DO NOT USE FAKE SPIDER WEBS OUTSIDE,” a woman cautioned, sharing her photos. Another
suggested, “If you’re looking for decorating ideas, consider reusing or repurposing items you already own.”
8.What is the problem with fake spider webs?
A.They are not visually appealing. B.They break down easily.
C.They pose a risk to wildlife. D.They are difficult to clean up.
9.Why did local officials share posts on social media?
A.To raise people’s awareness of fake webbing issues.
B.To warn people about the danger of Halloween decorations.
C.To respond to people’s concerns on environment.
D.To promote bird protection practices.
10.What does the underlined word “loathe” in paragraph 4 most probably mean?
A.Ignore. B.Choose. C.Hate. D.Frighten.
11.Which of the following is the most suitable title for this text?
A.Abandon dangerous Halloween decorations.
B.Restore the losing wildlife habitats.
C.Celebrate Halloween responsibly.D.Stop using fake spider webs for Halloween.

Uninvited opinions about someone’s marriage, their constant failures or whatever just happened in the
bathroom are all clues you’ve got an Oversharer on your hands. Whether they’re telling too much or asking for
details you’re not comfortable sharing, this all-too common persona has no boundaries.
“The discomfort you feel comes from a difference of standards about what topics of conversation are OK,”
says Wisner. “What they consider to be acceptable, need-to-know information is different from what it is for you.”
At the same awkward time, the Oversharer is only trying to get closer to you by revealing more about
themselves — and hoping you’ll do the same. “We tend to label these people as overly-curious, invasive (侵入的)
or rude,” notes Gerber, “but they really just want to be liked and accepted.”
To satisfy the Oversharer, and meanwhile reject endless TMI (too-much-information), consider sharing
something else — still personal but less invasive — that satisfies their urge to connect. When they really cross the
line, don’t be shy. Say something that indicates your boundary is being crossed. But you don’t have to declare them
to be rude or insist that they change their ways immediately. “OMG, that’s private!” says everything, and you’ll
never have to bring it up again.
A compliment (称赞) also works wonders with an Oversharer, adds Gerber, because it refocuses the
conversation in their direction while subtly resetting your boundary.
To my nosy friend who asks me when I plan to have a baby, for example, I will give this wise response next
time: “You made having kids look so easy! How’d you do it?” Then nod and smile, nod and smile. Maybe I won’t
have another baby in this life, but at least I’ll be ready to face an Oversharer — or any of the challenging people it
takes to make a world.
12.What is the function of the first paragraph?
A.Identifying the clues of an unpleasant talk. B.Stressing the importance of boundaries.
C.Shaping the image of an Oversharer. D.Presenting different opinions about sharing.
13.Why are Oversharers so interested in talking about private issues?
A.They want sympathy from others. B.They long for closer connections with others.
C.They are curious about others’ sufferings. D.They see it as a way to break the ice.
14.What is suggested if Oversharers cross your line?
A.Declaring your boundaries. B.Demanding an apology.
C.Ignore their comments. D.Criticizing their rudeness.
15.What is the purpose of the author’s response in the last paragraph?
A.To check her friend’s boundary. B.To shift the topic to her friend’s direction.
C.To learn from her friend’s experience. D.To show admiration for her friend.
