选择性必修第三册 UNIT 5 POEMS
Ⅰ.阅读理解
This year’s favorite books offer a mixture of advice on how to create a happier and
more compassionate society through shifting our worldview and improving our social
interactions.
Bittersweet
Writer Susan Cain describes bittersweet feelings as “a tendency to states of longing
and sorrow and a curious joy at the beauty of the world”.Embracing these emotions
can make our lives more meaningful.Such feelings can create motivation to reach a
renewed sense of purpose. While sometimes unpleasant , they can spur spiritual
growth and foster our connection with others.
Platonic
“Friendships are wrongly undervalued in our society ,” writes psychologist
Marisa Franco. It’s friendships that provide us with a great sense of belonging and
happiness. Her book shows us how to go about it—by reaching out, offering affection
and generosity.Franco gives practical guidance on how to manage psychological
blocks to friendship, paving the way to deeper relationships.
Happier Hour
Many people feel they don’t have enough hours to do everything they’d like to do.But
researcher Cassie Holmes shows why this attitude is wrong-headed.She encourages us
to evaluate our current use of free time and how much pleasure we get from our
activities. Then, she offers evidence-based tips on how to use time more wisely—by
lessening technology use, developing relationships and experiencing gratitude.
The Secret Life of Secrets
Is keeping a secret a bad thing?In professor Michael Slepian’s book,“People
don’t like to be alone with their thoughts, and having a secret can cause feelings ofisolation and uncertainty.” Therefore,it’s probably good to find a different way to

The person who set the course of my life was a school teacher named Marjorie
Hurd. When I stepped off a ship in New York Harbor in 1949,I was a nine-year-old
war refugee, who had lost the mother and was coming to live with the father I did
not know.
I was thirteen years old when I entered Chandler Junior High School.Shortly after I
arrived,I was told to select a hobby to pursue during“club hours”. The idea of
hobbies and clubs made no sense to my immigrant ears ,but I decided to follow
the prettiest girl in my class. She led me into the presence of Miss Hurd, the school
newspaper adviser and English teacher.
A tough woman with salt-and-pepper hair and determined eyes,Miss Hurd had no
patience with lazy bones. She drilled us in grammar, assigned stories for us to readand discuss, and eventually taught us how to put out a newspaper. Her introduction to
the literary wealth of Greece gave me a new perspective on my war-torn homeland,
making me proud of my origins. Her efforts inspired me to understand the logic and
structure of the English language.Owing to her inspiration, during my next twenty-
five years,I became a journalist by profession.
Miss Hurd retired at the age of 62.By then , she had taught for a total of 41
years.Even after her retirement, she continually made a project of unwilling students
in whom she spied a spark of potential. The students were mainly from the most
troubled homes, yet she alternately bullied and charmed them with her own special
brand of tough love, until the spark caught fire.
Miss Hurd was the one who directed my grief and pain into writing. But for Miss
Hurd , I wouldn’t have become a reporter. She was the one who sent me into
journalism and indirectly caused all the good things that came after.

Sometimes a book comes along that isn’t just“interesting”or“well done”—it’s a book
where it seems like the author looked into your brain and wrote a book specifically for
you.A book like that for me was released last week. It’s called 100 Things We’ve
Lost to the Internet, written by editor Pamela Paul.
Paul lists 100 things we used to do that the Internet has either changed or taken over
completely:writing letters,printing newspapers,the joys of being bored,and not
having all the knowledge in the world in your pocket.
As I often accumulate random knowledge, certain entries on the list—Being the
Only One , Figuring Out Who That Actor Is— hit me where I live :
remembering detailed facts is no longer nearly as impressive when everyone has the
capability to find the answer in seconds.
On and on the list goes, with every minor shift adding to the pile. What this book
does so well is illustrate the growth of that pile;while any individual item might be
no big deal, the collected set is significant. It’s a list of ways in which the world now
is different from the world then.
Obviously,Paul isn’t saying that everything back then was better.Time marches
on,after all,and it’s tough to argue against the many benefits that the Internet has
brought into our lives. But that isn’t really the point. It’s not about whether it used to be
better. It’s that it used to be different.
100 Things We’ve Lost to the Internet is a fun read for those of us who share some
of Paul’s memories and experiences. We remember what it was like and we like to
remember. The landscape has shifted, and no doubt it will shift again as technology’s
advancement continues apace. This book serves as a reminder of the simple truth that
when gains are made, sometimes something is lost.
8.What is the purpose of the text?
A.To review and recommend a good read.B.To comment on the effect of the Internet.
C.To argue for the viewpoint of a new book.
D.To urge the readers to value what they have.
9.Which might be entries on Paul’s list?
A.Maps and Eye Contact
B.E-pay and Compact Disks
C.Postcards and Homeschooling
D.Photos and Washing Machines

A.Prove what I’m good at.
B.Introduce how I grew up.
C.Describe the place I live in.
D.Speak out what is on my mind.

C.The Internet is a double-edged sword.
D.Technology is constantly changing the world.
Ⅱ.七选五
(2024·湖北部分市州1月调研)
Have you ever thought about what sand means to our lives? __1__,but we are
always ignoring its contributions to our lives. However,as British geologist Michael
Welland once explained in his book on sand,“Without it,our world would be
dramatically different.”
Dutch designers Nadine Sterk and Lonny van Ryswyck were deeply inspired by
Welland’s book on sand. They hoped that people would never forget the close
relationships with the primary materials of our lives. In 2010,Nadine and Lonny
started their project called “To See a World in a Grain of Sand”. They collected sand
from beaches, rivers and mountains around the world. They fired the sand at high
temperatures.__2__.These colors came from movement, erosion and transformationof thousands of years.Nadine and Lonny then made the melted sand into glass. The
glass’s design referenced Dutch glass and paintings of the 17th century.__3__,
because they wanted people to understand the world by understanding the journey of
sand.
Last year,Nadine and Lonny’s works were displayed for the first time during Dutch
Design Week and won the Dutch Design Awards.__4__,because their designs not
only challenged the traditions of today’s glass manufacturing industry ,but also
called on people to identify more deeply with the places where they lived.
__5__,you can join them.Firstly, you collect a bottle of sand from your favorite
place and take a photo of that place. Then, you complete the form for your sand
sample and share your own story on Nadine and Lonny’s website. After that, you
should send the sand sample , the photo and the address to Nadine and
Lonny. Finally, you just need to wait for your own glass!
A.In the process, unique colors were shown
B.The judges thought highly of their designs
C.It was able to repair itself on a regular basis
D.This natural material seems to be everywhere
E.If you are interested in Nadine and Lonny’s project
F.They also stamped the origin of the sand on the glass
G.These designs were displayed and voted both online and offline
