Instant noodles are a favorite quick meal when people don’t want to cook. Picture eating
them while watching TV on a stormy night — pure comfort! But many believe they’re just
junk food that harms health. The truth is, whether they’re unhealthy depends entirely on how
youpreparethem.
The main issue isn’t the noodles themselves, but the common way people make them:
pouring boiling water over dried noodles and adding all the salty seasoning packets(调味包).These flavor packets contain high levels of salt and artificial additives (人工添加剂), making
thisversionunbalancedandunhealthy.
Actually,plaininstantnoodlesaren’tterrible.They’refriedduringproduction(whichadds
some oilandcalories), buttheyfillyouupwellandprovide quickenergy whenyou’rehungry.
Tomake them healthier, cook them properly: boil the noodles first, drain excess starchy (含有
淀粉的) water, then use fresh water or broth (肉汤). Most importantly, use only half the
seasoning packet to reduce salt.Add vegetables like spinach or carrots and protein like an egg
or tofu while cooking. This boosts vitamins and protein while cutting sodium (钠). This
changesthemintoabalancedmeal!
So, are instant noodles junk food? If prepared lazily with all the seasoning and no extras,
yes.Butwhencookedwithlessseasoningplusveggiesandprotein,theybecomeadecent(像样

of a diverse diet, and they won’t harm your health. They’re far less scary than people think —

Language lets us share our feelings, make connections, and even hand down family
traditions like recipes and songs from generation to generation. But what about family
memberswhodon’tspeakthesamelanguage?
A“mother language” is definedas the firstlanguage thata childlearns athome. So you’d
thinkthatmeansyourmotherlanguageisbydefaultyourstrongest,mostcomfortablelanguage,
right? Wrong. While you might think learning a language is like riding a bicycle, something
youneverforgethowtodo,it’seasytoloselanguagefluencywithoutpractice.
Studies show that people who learn a heritage language(that is, one connected to their
family history, whether they grew up speaking it or not) experience improved self-esteem (自
尊) and safety in their identities (身份). Researchers also mention that reconnecting with and
understanding the family history and community is the driving force behind heritage language
learning.Relearning a mother language or trying out a heritage language as a beginner might feel
overwhelming at first, but the results can be incredibly rewarding. Jenny Liao’s article,
Forgetting My First Language, details how her Cantonese slowly became rusty (荒疏的) after
years of living away from home. Eventually, weekly phone calls with her parents only became
possible through translation apps. The inability to communicate fluently had made their
relationship shallow. Resolving to close these gaps, Liao threw herself into practicing
Cantonese. She forced herself into uncomfortable Cantonese conversations whenever possible
in stores and restaurants. Before long, she found she could have deeper conversations with her
parents. Their relationship.grew closer, even though her Cantonese only improved moderately.
It’sademonstrationoftheimpressivepoweroflanguagetobringfamiliestogether.
Learning or relearning a heritage language can sound pretty intimidating at first. But the
hard work invested proves to be rewarding and worthwhile. Whatcould be a stronger personal
connectionthantheconnectionwithfamilyheritage?

Sam’s birthday was approaching, and the excitement that usually filled his heart was now
replaced with disappointment and stress. Turning eleven was a big deal, and he had always
celebrated it with a grand party surrounded by his friends. However, this year was different.
The burden of excessive homework and his parents’ struggling business weighed heavily on
him, forcing Sam to make the difficult decision of not having a birthday party, even though it
wasaneventheenjoyeddearlyeveryyear.
One day, during break, his best friend, Jim, with a curious look in his eyes, approached.
“Areyougoingtohaveabirthdaypartythisyear?”Jimasked,sensingSam’ssadness.
“No,” Sam sighed and replied sadly, “There’s just too much going on and my parents are
goingthroughfinancial(金融的)difficulties.”
He smiled weakly, trying to conceal (掩盖) his immense disappointment and stress, but
Jim saw through hispretence (假装) easily.Jim noddedthoughtfully anddid notsay anything.
After the break, Sam saw his talking to one of their classmates, Sarah, secretively. Curious,
Sam went over to them, but as soon as Jim saw him, he quickly walked away. Sam was
startled(受惊吓的)byJim’sstrangeactionsandturnedtowardsSarah.
“Whatdidhesay?”Samasked. However,Sarah simply shrugged and walked away with Jim, leaving Sam standing there.

As Sam’s birthday drew nearer, Jim was often found chatting softly with his other
classmates.Whenever Sam wentover to them, theywould just walk away or tellhim thatthey
were talking about a secret which Sam was not allowed to know. Jim has never kept secrets
from me before, Sam thought. His heart fell. Even his friends were distancing (疏远)
themselves from him! He swung between confusion and sadness with each passing moment,
desperately trying to figure out what was happening. Why were his friends distancing
