Possible version 1
Good morning, everyone. On behalf of our group, I am here to present our
discussion on whether social media is beneficial for enhancing friendships. Our group
hold the view that social media is beneficial for strengthening friendships. We have
reached this conclusion based on two main reasons.
Firstly, social media effectively bridges geographical distances. It allows us to
maintain daily contact with friends who live far away. Through sharing updates, we can
stay involved in each other’s lives, which helps sustain and deepen our bonds. Secondly,
it helps us find and connect with like-minded people. Online interest groups enable us
to discover new friends who share our passions. This common ground provides a strong
foundation for building meaningful and supportive friendships.
Therefore, we believe that social media serves as a valuable tool for both
maintaining existing friendships and forming new connections. Thanks for listening.
Possible version 2
Good morning, everyone. Our group believes that social media is more likely to
harm than enhance genuine friendships. The reasons are as follows.
Firstly, social media often creates a false sense of connection rather than fostering
deep bonds. While we see countless updates and likes, these interactions are mostly
superficial/skin-deep. They lack the emotional depth essential for true understanding
and empathy. A “like” can never replace a heartfelt conversation or shared laughter.
Secondly, the culture of comparison and perfection on social platforms can create
pressure and jealousy. People tend to post only the highlights of their lives, making
others feel inadequate or left out. Thus, friendships are less likely to last.
In short, we believe social media keep us physically connected at the cost of
genuineness and emotional depth in friendships. Thank you.
Possible version 3
Good morning, everyone. Our group takes a balanced view: social media can be
beneficial for friendships, but its value depends entirely on how we use it.
On the positive side, social media helps maintain connections that would otherwise
fade. It allows us to keep in touch with old friends who have moved away and share life
updates conveniently. Additionally, it helps us find communities of people who share
our interests, which can lead to meaningful new friendships.
However, we also recognize its drawbacks. Online interactions often lack the
depth of face-to-face communication. The constant exposure to carefully selected
highlights may sometimes lead to unnecessary comparison. If we rely solely on social
media for connection, our relationships might become more superficial. Therefore, we believe social media is a useful tool to enhance friendships only
when combined with genuine/ in-person interactions. Thank you.

Text 1
W: Your room looks different. Have you got a new desk?
M: No, I’ve just moved it. I was getting too hot sitting under the window, so I put it over there
opposite the door.
Text 2
W: I’m very grateful for what you have done for my daughter.
M: That’s all right. That’s my job.
W: I know she has brought a lot of trouble to you. Thanks.
M: No trouble at all. By the way, keep her in bed for two weeks.
Text 3
M: It’s getting cold. This is my favorite time of year.
W: Really? I prefer spring.
M: Not me. I like the end of autumn, just before winter.
Text 4
M: I’d like to have the fountain(喷泉) as my background. Where should I stand?
W: Could you stand back a bit? Now a little to the right. Ready? Say cheese.
Text 5
M: I bought this suit yesterday but they’re too small. I’d like to return them.
W: No problem, sir. You also bought a shirt yesterday. What about the shirt?
M: I’ll keep it. Oh! Someone must have left this hat on that chair.
Text 6
M: What do you think of this flat?
W: It’s not really all that good. ⑥The bedroom is a little small for us.
M: Small, but it should be enough for our needs, I think. I love the living room. ⑦It’s huge and
filled with sunshine.
W: Yes, and I like the kitchen. It’s new and well-equipped.
M: And it has a great balcony with a view of the park.
W: You’re right. The view is beautiful.
Text 7
W: ⑧⑨I forgot that our new customer Mr. Tanawa is arriving tomorrow noon. Can you
take him to lunch, Robert?
M: ⑨I’m having lunch with our head of department Peter tomorrow, Jane.
W: Well, I’m out of the office till three. I can’t really get back any earlier. Couldn’t you arrange to
see Peter another day?
M: ⑨I don’t suppose he’ll mind. Leave it to me.
Text 8M: Want to go down to dinner, Ann? ⑩⑫The dining hall is going to close in about half an
hour, and I’m hungry.
W: ⑩What time is it?
M: ⑩6:30. You’d better go now if you want to eat. They’re serving fish and baked potatoes.
W: I don’t think I’ll go.
M: Oh, come on. Get yourself a big salad if you don’t want fish.
W: No, thanks, ⑪Bill. I think that I’ll keep studying for a while, and then maybe I’ll order a
pizza later.
M: Suit yourself(随你便). ⑪Do you have a test or something?
W: ⑪Yeah. It’s not until Monday, but I want to go home this weekend.
M: Lucky you. Two days of home cooking.
W: It sure beats the dining hall at the school.
M: True. Well, tell me if you decide to get that pizza later.
W: Why? ⑫Aren’t you going to eat either?
M: ⑫Sure. But I’ll be hungry again by ten.
Text 9
W: ⑬Hello, this is Universal Television Station. How may I help you?
M: Hello. Uh, I’m calling because I saw an advertisement in the newspaper. It said there was a
summer part-time job available for a student who wants to work on your local news program.
W: Right. But you do realize that all of our part-time jobs are for student volunteers? It’s an
unpaid position. Besides, if you think it as a platform to meet famous people, then you’re
wrong.
M: Oh, sure, I understand that. ⑭I just want to get some experience working for a television
news program. You see, I’m thinking about a business in television news production after I
get my degree.
W: Oh? Are you majoring in Media and Communication?
M: No, ⑮in English, but I’ve taken some courses of Media and Communication.
W: I see. Well, you’ll need to talk to Ms. Wagner. She’s in charge of the program. ⑯But first,
you’ll need to come here to fill out an application form. You can drop by the station later
today.

W: Welcome to the Selmore Public Library. To join the library, you need a membership card.
Take your passport or ID card, as well as show your home address, to the information desk.
⑰After a period of two years, all readers are required to go to the desk with a paper
that has their name and present address on it so the library can keep up-to-date records
of where people are living.
There’s no need to register again and there is no charge for this.
If you can’t find the book you want on the shelves, ⑱you can book it in advance. If it’s in
another library in the city, we can usually get it for you within a week. If someone else has
borrowed it, it can take a few weeks. Either way, we tell you by phone when the book can be
picked up. ⑱We will hold it for you for five days.Books can be borrowed for fourteen days. Children’s books also have a two-week borrowing
period. So do the CDs but DVDs, both children’s and adults’, can only be borrowed for up to
seven days. ⑲Dictionaries can be borrowed but normally only for one day.
The library opening hours have been changed slightly. Instead of opening late on Wednesday
evenings until 8:00 p.m., we will be closing at 6, but ⑳we will close at 7 instead of 5:30 on
Saturdays and we are going to open on Sunday mornings from next month — 9 to 1. Notices
are posted in the library about these.
