After all, everyone has bad days and good days. Some days you need a helping hand and some days you can be the one giving the helping hand. 4. Never had I anticipated that a random act of kindness would inject such great power into others and change their life.(cid:78)(cid:79)(cid:80)(cid:81)(cid:34)(cid:82)(cid:83)(cid:84)(cid:33)(cid:70)(cid:85)(cid:86)(cid:87)(cid:35)(cid:74)(cid:75)(cid:88)(cid:89)(cid:90)(cid:73)(cid:4)(cid:91)(cid:92)(cid:93)(cid:94)(cid:95)(cid:35)(cid:57)(cid:96)(cid:33)(cid:97)(cid:98)(cid:99)(cid:100)(cid:35)(cid:101)(cid:102)(cid:103) 5. Never give up!” chanted ((cid:811)(cid:812)) my two young children, Max and Charley, as they marched barefoot behind their grandmother Mia. They had just left the beach, where they had spent the day building sand castles and splashing in the waves. Now, Mia was leading Max and Charley on another adventure: They were seeking the ice-cream truck, which was always difficult to find. Over the years, Mia had become our family’s symbol of positivity. It was not a title she earned without effort, however. When my dad died, Mia was only forty years old and was left to raise me and my ten-year-old brother alone. She experienced a deeply sad event that could easily make anyone feel significantly less happy. She had been the one who had to make the decision to remove our dad from life support fourteen days after he died in a car accident. My mom could have lived under a black cloud. Instead, she challenged herself to find joy every day. She was always up for a new challenge, whether that was hiking across the steep ((cid:813)(cid:814)(cid:35)), rocky road of a mountaintop in Austria to get a better view of the breathtaking landscape, or signing up for tap-dancing classes at fifty. Leadingby example, Mom taught us just how much one could achieve with a positive attitude. She has taken the same approach in her relationship with her grandchildren. Before starting her adventure with Max and Charley on that hot July afternoon, Mia heard the familiar clang ((cid:815)(cid:167)(cid:436)) of the ice-cream man’s bell from her beach chair. She turned and saw him briefly, spotting his green shirt and catching the gleam of his waving bell before he turned and disappeared over the dunes ((cid:816)(cid:817)). But you need to be fast because he doesn’t stay for very long after you hear his bell. Playing was my love. While most kids were outside in the burning summer sun, playing childish games, I was happy to sit in the cool indoors for hours practicing my beloved piano. When I played, I felt like I was in a whole new world where I was free and easy. All I had to worry about was my music. Playing was never boring for me. I had spent months practicing and the big day finally came. It was the day of the Alberta Music Competition. The music hall was packed with excited audience. I sat in the first row with my mother seated beside me. As the fellow competitors were playing. I couldn’t keep my mind on their music. I was just memorizing the notes and practising the fingerings. I had known my music was like the back of my hand. But this time, to my great surprise, I found my fingers completely out of my control. They kept shaking. I nearly burst into tears. Seeing this, mom held my hands tightly in hers. She even breathed into them as if she wanted to warm them up. Then she whispered to my ear, “Sweetie, take it easy. Just listen and enjoy the music.” I looked up and turned my attention to the competitor in the center of the stage for the first time. A thin and tall boy was sitting at the beautiful red piano. He looked calm and confident. His fingertips danced on the keyboard. The soft and gentle sound of the piano flew in the air. For a moment, I totally forgot my nervousness. (cid:4)(cid:112)1. Losing her grandma felt like losing a part of herself. Swallowed by sadness, Mary was unable to find her motivation or direction in life. The vibrant girl she used to be seemed to have vanished. The only thing that lingered in her mind was what her grandma had told her before she passed: “Even in the darkest times, there’s always a guiding star, like the North Star ((cid:831)(cid:450)(cid:832)), which can always navigate you.” One day, while enjoying a cup of coffee at a local cafe, Mary’s friend Jenny approached her with an exciting idea. “Mary, have you ever thought about stargazing ((cid:465)(cid:832)) in the wilderness?” Jenny asked, her eyes shining with excitement. Mary’s eyes widened, and a smile spread across her face. “Stargazing? That sounds incredible! Count me in.” she exclaimed, her voice filled with expectation. The plan was set for a cool evening when the sky would be at its clearest. They began their journey from Mary’s house. As they walked hand in hand, their breath turned into misty clouds in the cool night air. The moon was hidden behind thick clouds, casting a darkness on their path. But instead of feeling scared, they felt a rush of excitement washing over them. The stillness of the night, broken only by the soft whispers of the wind, brought a newfound peace to their mind. Little by little, the city lights faded, and the stars above became increasingly obvious. They couldn’t help but feel amazed by the countless stars that decorated the sky. They decided not to choose the well-known path and wandered deeper into the wilderness. Fireflies ((cid:833)(cid:834)(cid:835)) danced gracefully, lighting up the night sky. Absorbed in chats and laughter, they failed to notice when the familiar sights started to disappear, slowly getting swallowed by the tall trees of the forest. Tom and his friends would usually spend the entire weekend together, before meeting again the following week while in school. That day, Tom’s mom Gina wanted to change up his routine by inviting him to watch a new superhero movie with her. Gina kept calling Tom on his cellphone, but he wouldn’t pick up. So, she decided to make her way to the cafe where Tom was. When she spotted Tom and his friends, she made her way to them, only to see Tom’s friends giggling. “Your grandmother’s come to pick you up, Tom!” they teased. Tom glared ((cid:799)(cid:269)) at his mother and walked up to her to stop her from going any closer. “What are you doing here?” he blamed her. “You’re embarrassing me in front of my friends!” “I just wanted to ask if you wanted to watch a movie with me,” she smiled , trying to hold his hand. Tom shrugged off her hands. “Leave me alone! I’m with my friends!” he told her. Gina walked back home sadly. When Tom got home that night, it was already half past eleven. He went straight to his room, not even realizing Gina was in the living room. “What’s the matter, Tom?” Gina asked him. “Why is it that you don’t like being with me anymore? I’m worried about you, Tom. I rarely know what’s going on in your life!” she said. “You’re such an old, boring woman! Why did you even give birth to me?!” he yelled. Gina felt a pain in her chest. Before she could respond, Tom grabbed his backpack and ran out the door. “Tom!” Gina called out. Tom rode on his bike and left the street. Gina tried calling out and chasing after him, but he was too fast. Then, she fainted((cid:755)(cid:84)) in front of one of her neighbor’s houses. (cid:4)(cid:112)(cid:10)1. She had prepared lots of snacks, while my job was to have the backyard in order. There was plenty of space for the kids to run and play. There was just one thing I hadn’t counted on: My brother chose to bring his dog Toby, a 50-pound ball of fire. Though friendly, he could easily knock over my niece’s small boys and my six-month-old granddaughter. So, when my brother showed up, I asked him to watch Toby and keep him outside. My plan was working out just fine. Toby was using up his energy by running back and forth in the backyard and giving the kids plenty of room. Unexpectedly, after supper, the weather changed. It started to rain and everyone went indoors. It was an awkward moment. I didn’t want Toby to be running around in the house, and my brother wasn’t happy with driving home with a wet dog. Eventually, my brother decided to leave rather than force the issue. A few days passed, and I hadn’t heard anything from my brother. I texted him and expressed wishes for him to come out again. His reply came as a surprise — a shock, actually: “Not a chance.” Clearly, he was unhappy over the way we had parted. After all, I had left him little choice. Well, he’ll get over it, I reasoned. Two months passed. My wife suggested I get in touch with my brother, but I resisted, thinking he should call first. However, my conscience ((cid:108)(cid:31)) kept bothering me. I tried to put myself in my brother’s shoes. He was facing health issues and his wife of thirty-five years had passed away a few months earlier. But for me, it was the first challenge I encountered as an international student in Ireland. The pronunciation system of the Chinese language is quite different from that of English. For native speakers of English, some Chinese words are rather difficult to pronounce. My given name Qiuyu ((cid:722)(cid:386)), for instance, happened to be a great challenge for many of them. Every time I gave a self-introduction, I had to explain how to pronounce my name at least five times, yet they still could not say it the way I did. Once in a lecture, the professor tried repeating my name after me over and over in front of thirty classmates. I really did not know whether I should continue correcting him or simply drop the matter. I feared that my classmates might grow tired of my efforts or even lose patience with me. After all, I did care about how others would think of me. I realized that if I didn’t stop, the entire lecture would be ruined. “It’s okay, professor,” I shrugged ((cid:565)(cid:566)). The awkward moment ended with the class erupting into laughter. I forced a smile, unsure how to respond further. After that incident, I stopped acting as a “Chinese teacher.” Instead of correcting others when they were struggling to pronounce my name, I just smiled and nodded approvingly. This approach spared me the discomfort of having to over-explain. However, I soon found that by doing so, I might be losing something more important: the opportunity to share a small part of my cultural identity. I had planned to fly to Vienna and take a bus to Prague for a conference. Due to a big storm, my flight had been delayed by an hour and a half. I touched down in Vienna just 30 minutes before the departure of the last bus to Prague. The moment I got off the plane, I ran like crazy through the airport building and jumped into the first taxi on the rank without a second thought. That was when I met Gunter. I told him where I was going but he said he hadn't heard of the bus station. I , thought my pronunciation was the problem, so I explained again more slowly, but he still looked confused. When I was about to give up, Gunter fished out his little phone and rang up a friend. After a heated discussion that lasted for what seemed like a century, Gunter put his phone down and started the car. Finally, with just two minutes to spare we rolled into the bus station. Thankfully, there was a long queue ((cid:470) (cid:842)) still waiting to board the bus. Gunter parked the taxi behind the bus, turned around, and looked at me with a big smile on his face. "We made it," he said. Just then I realised that I had zero cash in my wallet. I flashed him an apologetic smile as I pulled out my Portuguese bankcard. He tried it several times, but the card machine just did not play along. A feeling of helplessness washed over me as I saw the bus queue thinning out. At this moment, Gunter pointed towards the waiting hall of the bus station. There, at the entrance, was a cash machine. I jumped out of the car, made a mad run for the machine, and popped my card in, only to read the message: "Out of order. Sorry." One of the major headaches for her was finding her way in the huge school building. It was a six-story building. On each floor, hallways stretched in four directions, leading to classrooms, laboratories, and teachers’ offices. Somewhere in the building, there was also a library, a cafeteria, and a gym. Having a poor sense of direction, Eva found it impossible to get around in such a huge building. All the different hallways and rooms were too much to think about, let alone commit to memory. She decided that she would memorize where her classes were and then pretend that the rest of the place didn’t exist. In her first PE class, Eva was shocked when Coach Pitt announced that everyone had to run one mile around the track outside. She searched the faces of her classmates for signs of panic. There was nothing she feared more than having to run a whole mile. To Eva, “a mile” was used to describe long distances. It was ten miles from her home to her grandfather’s, and that always seemed like a long way, even in a car! When Coach Pitt blew his whistle ((cid:844)(cid:486)), Eva figured she would be left in the dust. However, while some of her classmates edged ahead, others actually fell behind. ” It’s just the beginning, “she thought.” I’ll come in last for sure. “ Soon Eva began to breathe hard, with her heart pounding and legs shaking. Feeling desperate, Eva started using a mind trick on herself. She stopped thinking about the word” mile. “Instead, she focused on reaching the shadow cast on the track by an oak tree up ahead. Then she concentrated on jogging to the spot where the track curved ((cid:845)(cid:571)). After that, she tried to see if she could complete her first lap. With zero work experience and no professional degree, her chances of getting hired for a well-paid job were next to zero. One day, after dropping her children at school, Catherine spotted a construction site ((cid:850)(cid:375)). “I think I can work here,” she thought and walked close to the manager. “Hi, are you hiring ((cid:851)(cid:852))? ” she asked. “Yes, we are,” the manager looked at Catherine from head to toe.“Are you sure you can work here? This job requires a lot of hard work.” “I’m ready for it,” she told the manager and signed a contract ((cid:471)(cid:241)) to work a 12-hour shift ((cid:853)(cid:669)). However, Catherine kept her new job a secret from her children. She thought they would feel embarrassed after learning their mother worked at a construction site. Every morning, after dropping her children to school, she would go to the construction site and work until her shift ended. She would pick up heavy bricks ((cid:854)(cid:855)) on her shoulder to transport them from one part of the site to the other. One evening, Catherine’s son, Peter, told her about an upcoming competition in school that required mothers to join. In the competition, students would wear blindfolds ((cid:739)(cid:856)) and have to recognize their mothers without looking at them. “That sounds like such a cool event, Peter!” Catherine said excitedly. “I can’t wait for it!” “I won’t go there with you, mom,” Peter replied. “But why?” What her son said next was something Catherine wasn’t prepared to hear. “Mom, I would have to touch your hands to recognize you, and everyone would look at them,” Peter explained. “Your hands are so ugly. They’re so hard and rough,” he added. “I will feel so embarrassed when my classmates look at your hands,” the boy said. “I won’t attend the event.” Catherine felt terrible but couldn’t say anything in her defense. As we were heading back to the car with our purchases, I noticed another mother with her teenage son happily walking to their car, which was parked in the next aisle ((cid:148)(cid:627)). The next few events all happened over a very short stretch of time. As I was loading my groceries into our car and tending to my little baby, I heard a sudden very loud screaming and crying. I had no idea what could have happened so quickly, but it appeared that the teenage boy had somehow become seriously injured. His mom was holding him in a desperate hug while he was sobbing, and when she took her hand away from him for a moment, I saw some blood. The mother of the injured boy was clearly in shock and couldn’t do anything besides holding her son, who had stopped yelling but was still shaking and crying. I really wanted to be of help, but I was also trying to attend my little one who half stood from the grocery cart seat, so I couldn’t get there immediately. Just then, another woman came striding ((cid:95)(cid:860)) over in a full-steam-ahead speed walk. She immediately jumped into action, demanding the facts from the mother. She was just direct and to the point in a way that was necessary to cut through the panic in an urgent situation. They quickly decided to call 911, and the woman was all over it, telling the emergency responders everything they needed to know. She did everything exactly right that you’re supposed to do in an emergency, giving clear directions to the ambulance driver. It was actually amazing to witness her confidence under pressure. Her annoying sister, April, had completely ruined ((cid:864)(cid:154)) her nice Saturday morning. Couldn’t a super-busy teenage girl get some rest from a continuously-working week? OK, maybe Lynn had pushed April onto the table, spilling juice everywhere onto the floor, and maybe her mom had blamed April for what happened and didn’t give April time to explain. Being unfairly treated, April was in a stormy mood. To pay her back, she “accidentally” spilled a bowl of jelly ((cid:246)(cid:865)) onto Lynn, ruining Lynn’s new T-shirt. And just last week, April had secretly poured sticky glue on Lynn’s seat in class. Lynn couldn’t have been happier to see her sister suffer. This chain of payback and tricks had been going on forever between the two girls ever since there had been too much stress (endless homework, mountainous tests, and many more) in eighth grade. One day, as Lynn thought about all this, she couldn’t help feeling a bit sad, remembering the joyous days when the two girls were small, they challenged themselves to climb a pretty steep and high rock at the back of their house inside a small wood. And when they struggled to get to the top together, they would have “conquered the world”. They felt they were at the top of the world. What a happy memory! She sighed again and gave up trying to rub the jelly on her shirt. Perhaps... it was time to stop having a world war with her sister. So, Lynn changed into a new shirt, took a deep breath and knocked on her sister’s door. April opened the door hesitantly and Lynn entered the room quickly. April looked confused for a second wondering why her sister was here. Somehow, she seemed to sense her sister wanted to do something about their displeasure. (cid:4)(cid:112)(cid:10) 1. Ever since she was a little girl, Lily had been interested in the art of public speaking. She would watch famous speeches on television and was amazed at the way the speakers could hold an audience attracted with their words. Even as a young girl, she knew that she wanted to do the same someday. As Lily grew older, her passion for public speaking only enhanced. She read books and attended workshops to learn everything she could about the subject. She practiced speaking in front of mirrors and even recorded herself to analyze her delivery and improve her technique. However, despite all of her hard work, Lily found herself struggling to connect with her audience. Her words were great and well-rehearsed ((cid:870)(cid:60)(cid:871)(cid:65)(cid:148)(cid:35)), but she felt that something was missing. It wasn’t until she came across a TED talk on body language that everything clicked into place. In the talk, the speaker discussed how our body language can convey just as much information as our words, sometimes even more so. A confident posture ((cid:872)(cid:873)) and relaxed facial expression can signal confidence and certainty, while moving your body constantly or avoiding eye contact can reveal nervousness or discomfort. This realization led Lily to study body language and its impact on communication. Armed with this new knowledge, Lily began practicing her own body language skills and studying the techniques of other great speakers. She watched videos of famous speeches and analyzed how the speakers used their bodies to emphasize key points and connect with their audience. She practiced making eye contact and using hand gestures ((cid:143)(cid:873)) to emphasize important ideas. One day, Lily was invited to speak at a conference in front of a large audience. She had prepared her speech thoroughly and felt confident in her content, but she was nervous about how she would behave on stage. (cid:4)(cid:112)(cid:10) 1. Running is a stumbling block on my way. As an extremely sedentary-person, I’m greatly envious of those coral reef creatures that sit in one spot their entire life. I’m out here working for my food, while the ocean basically has free food 24/7. Still, I went into the 7-mile course with no training, accompanied by my old friend Abel. This guy bikes and runs countless miles, often in the same day. And he has done dozens of Spartan Races ((cid:681)(cid:787)(cid:231)(cid:202)(cid:712)(cid:423)), which are courses that require you to crawl through mud, flip tires and throw spears. We’ve been taken part in the race almost every year since we were in senior high. I peaked about 15 years ago but my athletic performance has been steadily declining ever since. That wasn’t enough of a challenge for Abel. When I messaged him chat to let him know what time I’d pick him up Saturday morning, he said he didn’t need a ride. He was going to ride his pedals there. He set out in the dark at 4 a. m, to meet us at 10 a. m. We arrived at almost exactly the same time. After biking for hours, he stretched a bit, then beat me by nine minutes in a7-mile run. He’s probably not even sore today. As for me, I did better than I thought I would. Between miles 4 and 5, I felt so good that I wondered why I only do this once a year. Then I hit mile 6, and my body reminded me: the going got tough. Usually, my breathing gives out first. I just can’t get enough air to keep my clumsy body moving. This time, it was my legs. I pushed hard, but with a mile left, my body just couldn’t take it anymore. Abel, on the other hand, seemed to be maintaining a steady pace. He passed me effortlessly. Still, I can honestly say I gave everything I had. I slowly made my way to the finish line, feeling dizzy and on the verge of collapse. He is passing on the same love and warmth that his teacher gave him to his 32 students. This letter took me back 15 years. One afternoon in April, I walked into a classroom as usual to guide my students, when an eight-year-old boy named Jack suddenly caught my attention. On his desk were glue and a lot of colored paper, which he was carefully folding. Jack was an introverted, dyslexic ((cid:812)(cid:887)(cid:360)(cid:50)) child who rarely spoke. He was also slow to remember words. When I saw Jack at work with his paper and glue, I didn’t disturb him. After a while, a beautiful paper plane emerged, then he wrote something on the wings with a pen, smiling happily. As soon as the bell rang, he rushed out of the classroom, tightly holding the paper plane in his hand. He went to the playground and threw the paper plane with all his might. Jack ran back and forth on the playground with excitement and shouted, “I did it! I did it!” This was the first time I’d seen Jack happy. In the following week, I began to observe Jack quietly and found that he carried a small bag in which there were many different kinds of paper planes, from point y ones to long-tailed ones to wide-winged ones. Every day after school, he would go to the playground and fly his planes, each with different words written on the wings. These observations showed me that Jack had strong hands-on abilities and a rich imagination. I felt that there was a huge potential hidden in his little body. How could I use this knowledge to build his confidence? I bought some origami ((cid:888)(cid:634)(cid:889)(cid:890)) books for him and started flying paper planes with him after school. Jack told me his dreams of going to space were written on the wings of each paper plane. He said that every time he flew a paper plane, his dream would be one step nearer. Suddenly, I had an idea of having a paper plane competition in class. (cid:4)(cid:112)(cid:10) 1. (cid:284)(cid:447)(cid:818)(cid:13)(cid:370)(cid:118)150(cid:85)(cid:819)(cid:820); 2. We searched the plant for a whole day, but without luck. We found nothing. As it got dark, I asked Roy to go back, but he refused and said, “I would rather sleep on the mountain tonight and continue to search tomorrow! ” I desired to go home but I lacked the courage to go back alone, so I chose to stay and help Roy put up a simple tent under a tree. It was freezing cold on the mountain and there were scores of mosquitoes, which made it impossible for us to have a good sleep. What’s worse, we heard a wolf howling nearby! I was so scared. “I heard that wolves bully((cid:897)(cid:898))the weak and fear the strong, ” Roy told me. “Let’s strike the shovel((cid:899) (cid:486))and shout to scare it away! ” He found a stone and started to strike the shovel. And then he shouted as he struck the shovel. Inspired, I followed him to shout loudly. Half an hour later, I felt cold all over the body. And the cold air on the mountain made that worse. My stomach began to ache. I lay in the tent, shivering, sweating and then falling unconscious. Roy was shocked with panic. He called my name screamingly, but I just made no response. He tried to put me on his back to carry me home but without success. At last, he went out and found some tree branches and blocked up the entrance to our tent with them. Then, he ran to the direction of our village as fast as he could. Not knowing how much time went by, I heard some sounds approaching near. I thought it was Roy but I didn’t hear him saying anything. In a shock, I sat up with a rush. At that moment, my eyes had adjusted to the darkness. Through a hole of our tent, I saw two animals like dogs removing the tree branches with their mouths and claws. They were wolves! (cid:4)(cid:112)(cid:10) 1. (cid:284)(cid:447)(cid:818)(cid:13)(cid:370)(cid:118)150(cid:819)(cid:820); 2.
