Fun things to do in high school
Learn another language
Your school might be holding foreign language classes, so this is a great way to start your
language learning journey! If you want more self-paced learning, apps like Duolingo are easily
accessible (可使用的) on our mobile phones. As our world becomes more interconnected, it’s
always good to learn another language or two.

amount of work and effort. If you are struggling (挣扎) with your grades, you can host or join
group studies with your classmates!
Don’t be disappointed if you are not able to get an A in a term. What’s important is having
the drive to go forward, as a famous person once said, “He who would climb a ladder must begin
at the bottom.”
Experience another culture
Culture and tradition are something that all humans share. No matter where we come from,
we always bring our culture with us. People coming from different cultures may be among your
friends or neighbors.
You can go to a museum, read a book, or try new food in your area. Remember to keep anopen mind and take the time to learn about them.
Bring a shareable treat to class
If you know your way around the kitchen, you can impress your class by making and
bringing them a delicious treat! Not only will this make their stomachs happy, but you’ll also bond
(联系) the whole class together. Just don’t forget to check with your teacher first before bringing
one.

On a freezing cold day, a couple had to move into a small apartment because of their failure
in business. The husband worked day and night to support the family but gave no care of his wife.
So she thought, “He doesn't love me any more. He just cares about his business ... not me”.
One day, she was about to take a shower when he stopped her at the door, “Let me take it
first, okay?” “Why not me first?” she asked. “I am tired, honey, you take it later, okay?” She was
entirely unhappy.
One day, she found nothing to do and turned on his computer. A few words came into her
sight. Reading them, she burst into tears. It was his diary:
Today, I was quite sad. She asked me why I was always taking the shower first, and I said to
her, “I was exhausted.” She was unhappy. In her mind, I treated her not as well as usual, but what
could I do? I was not as rich as before! We moved to the small apartment, and there was only one
shower in the bathroom. It was so cold to take a shower in such a cold winter. But I found that if
one person took the shower first, the room could get a little warmer. So every day I rushed to the
bathroom first. I was thinking that, when she took the shower, the room would get warmer, even if
it was only 1℃.
Now I cannot give her a comfortable life, take her to good restaurants, or buy expensive
dresses for her, but at least, I can give her 1℃ love.

An artificial intelligence (AI) software has been developed that can interpret hard-to-read
texts on cuneiform tablets. It was created by a team from Martin Luther University Halle-
Wittenberg (MLU), Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, and Mainz University of Applied
Sciences.
Unlike previous methods that relied on photographs, the researchers used 3D models of
nearly 2,000 cuneiform tablets — about 50 of which were from a collection at MLU — achieving
significantly more reliable results. According to Hubert Mara, an assistant professor at MLU,
approximately one million cuneiform tablets still exist worldwide, but many are heavily weathered
and therefore difficult to decipher.
His lab proposed the idea of developing an AI system based on 3D models. This new
system interprets characters more effectively than earlier approaches. In principle, the AI operates
similarly to Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software, which converts images of writing into
machine-readable text.
“OCR typically uses photographs, which works well for ink on paper. However, with
cuneiform tablets, it's more challenging because lighting conditions greatly affect how well certain
characters can be identified,” explains Ernst Stötzer from MLU.
The team trained the new AI software, which successfully recognized the symbols on the
tablets. “We were surprised that our system performed so well, even on heavily weathered
tablets,” says Stötzer.
The researchers’ work represents a major step forward in the study of ancient writing
systems and opens up many new avenues for scientific exploration. Currently, the software can
translate symbols from two languages, but there are a total of twelve known cuneiform languages.
In the future, the software could also help decipher other weathered inscriptions, which, like
cuneiform, are three-dimensional.8.What is the purpose of the new AI system?
A.To create 3D models for damaged cuneiform tablets.
B.To discover cuneiform tablets all over the world.
C.To read symbols on cuneiform tablets.
D.To date different cuneiform tablets.
9.What makes the new AI system different from previous methods?
A.It is based on 3D models.
B.It uses a set of OCR software.
C.It can recognize computer texts.
D.It includes twelve cuneiform languages.
10.What impressed Stötzer during the research?
A.The long history of cuneiform tablets.
B.The effectiveness of the new AI system.
C.The influence of ancient writing systems.
D.The difficulty of protecting weathered inscriptions.
11.What is the author’s attitude toward the new AI system?
A.Indifferent. B.Objective.
C.Curious. D.Positive.

Art and science may seem totally different. Some people believe that art is about creative
ideas, while science means cold data (数据). However, they actually have a lot in common. A
study even showed that art can help students better remember what they’ve learned in science
class.
Mariale Hardiman, an education specialist at Johns Hopkins University, found that students
using art in class listened more carefully, asked more questions, and volunteered more ideas. To
prove this, Hardiman teamed up with some researchers and six local schools.
In the experiment ( 实 验 ), the researchers worked with teachers in 16 fifth-grade
classrooms. They provided both traditional and art-centered science lessons. In art-centered
classes, students might sing the information instead of just reading it.
The team divided 350 students into two groups. One group started with traditional science
classes, while the other began with art-centered ones. About three weeks later, the students
switched (对调). This way, each student experienced both teaching methods. Every unit was
taught in both ways to different groups. This helped researchers compare how students performed
in each type of class.
The results showed that students who started off in traditional classes did better after
moving to art-centered ones. Those who started with art-centered classes continued to do well
even when they went back to traditional classes. These students seemed to use the art skills they’d
learned. Teachers also reported that many students kept singing the songs they learned after
试卷第4页,共9页finishing the unit. Hardiman said, “The more we hear something, the more we remember it. Art
might help students find creative ways to learn on their own.”
12.What is a common belief about art and science?
A.They can lift our spirits. B.They share a lot in common.
C.They are like opposite things. D.They teach us to be reasonable.
13.What were the students asked to do in the experiment?
A.Lead group discussions. B.Attend two kinds of classes.
C.Give a speech in the lab. D.Pick their favourite teachers.
14.What does paragraph 4 mainly tell us about the experiment?
A.Its process. B.Its change. C.Its importance. D.Its advantage.
15.How do the students probably benefit from art according to Hardiman?
A.Learn about teamwork. B.Forget terrible memories.
C.Improve language skills. D.Develop creative learning.

Being “a grown-up” is a pretty unclear concept, even once you’re technically “grown-up”.
My career has taken its fair share of twists and turns in the past three years since I graduated, and
in some ways I feel like I’m still only starting to figure out what I want to do. 16 . So if
you’re still pondering the question, here’s my advice for making the best of it.
17
In some ways, in decision about the future allows you to have a much more open mind about
various career choices than those who’ve always known exactly what they want to do. If you limit
yourself too much, you could miss the opportunity to join an exciting new startup, develop a great
business idea, or try something unexpected that you might love.
Accept that the landscape is always changing
While it may have once made sense to dream about being a doctor, lawyer, or professional
ballet dancer, many of the jobs open to you now are ones you didn’t know about as a child. 18
. The job that fits you could be one you’d never even imagined at age 10, 25, or even 40.
Redefine (重新定义) “grown-up”
The concept of being a “grown-up” means that there’s a finish line to a personal and
professional life that is, in reality, always changing. 19 this discovery will likely be the
result of much trial and error, and you’ll probably find yourself fighting for new goals throughout
much of your life.
20 Being grown-up means being satisfed with the journey you’ve chosen and
enjoying the many different roads you’ve followed.
A.Do something
B.Embrace uncertaintyC.Even if the job has its disadvantages
D.The Internet transformed the professional landscape in totally unexpected ways
E.Truthfully, that grown-up person your childhood self once dreamed of might not exist
F.And I’ve learned that it’s OK not to know what you want to be even at a grown-up age
G.While you can hope that you’ll one day find a hobby or career that you’re enthusiastic about

When I was a child, my mum liked to prepare food for dinner every now and then. And I

That Monday evening so long ago, my mum placed a plate of eggs, sausage, and terribly
burnt toast (吐司) in front of my dad. I remember 22 to see if Dad noticed! Yet all my

butter and jelly (果酱) on that toast and eat it!
When I got up from the 26 that evening, I remember 27 my mum
apologise (道歉) to my dad for burning the toast. And I’ll never forget what he said, “Baby, I love

burnt toast. He 30 me in his arms and said, “Son, your mum put in a hard day at work
today and she’s very 31 . Besides, a little burnt toast never 32 anyone!”
Actually, life is full of imperfect things and imperfect people. We can’t be 33
at everything we do.
What I’ve learned over the years is that learning to accept each other’s disadvantages and
choosing to celebrate each other’s differences is one of the most important keys to creating a
healthy, growing and lasting 34 .
If you learn to take the good, the bad and the ugly parts of your life as they are, you can

Billy, a fourth-grade student at a primary school in Florida, was bullied (欺负) for his DIY
hand-drawn logo of the University of Tennessee(the UT), but this made students of the UT act in
support and the UT even turned his drawing into an official T-shirt.
It all started at “College Colours Day” on August 30. On that day, the primary school
students were invited to wear their favourite university’s football team’s colours. Billy, wore an
orange T-shirt representing his favourite university, the UT. He took it one step further to draw his
own UT logo with pen and paper and put it to his T-shirt. Billy excitedly showed his T-shirt to
Laura, a fourth-grade teacher at the school. She was greatly impressed and praised him for his
wonderful idea.
But after lunch, Billy came back to Laura’s office, crying. Billy was upset and hurt because
some girls at the lunch table had made fun of the hand-drawn logo on his T-shirt. Laura knew
sometimes kids could say really cruel words. She knew although the logo was not well-drawn and
of course not the most beautiful, Billy had tried his best to use the resources he had available to
him to take part in College Colours Day in his own way.
In an effort to cheer him up, Laura wrote in a post on Facebook, a popular social media
website, on Wednesday that one of her students was “SO EXCITED” to show her his orange T-
shirt pinned with a hand-drawn “UT” logo, but was made fun of. Laura wrote that she was
planning to buy him an official UT T-shirt to make it a little extra special for Billy and ended the
