Wang Fang, a Suzhou native, has given her heart and soul to Kunqu Opera. Wang, who has

{#{QQABZQ8w4gg4kIaA学科C网(北C京)股份6有限K公司BQXiCgmYkJAgLAgEgQAWKARDwBFABAA=}#}started to learn thetraditional art form in 1977.
Born with a melodic voice, Wang loved to sing and dance when she was little. She performed
frequently, and was recruited(招募) by the Suzhou Kunqu Opera Troupe (剧团) when she was in
middle school. However, her parents refused the troupe’s invitation, insisting that she should
concentrate onher studies and not drop out of school. After members of thetroupe visited the parents
repeatedly and showed great sincerity,Wang’s parents finally agreed.
Learning the traditional art form was never easy. She started to learn how to pronounce words,
sing them lyrically and make gestures gently. As an actress playing martial artists (武术) roles at first,
she had to spend extra time practicing kung fu movements. Years later, Wang used the word
“unimaginable” to describe howhard thedays were when she first learned Kunqu. Shewas soaked in
sweat (汗水)when practicing movements insummer, while inwinter sheoften had chilblains(冻疮)
on her hands when training in shabby classrooms with broken windows. “But I was young and
determined at the time. No matter how difficult, I always got up early the next morning to practice,”
Wangrecalls.
Wang says she did not love Kunqu at first, but in her early 20s, when she watched the show
Peony Pavilion performed by Zhang Jiqing, a master of the art form, it clicked. “I was shocked,”
Wang says. “Her every movement was full of elegance and delicacy. Each of her lines and songs was
perfect. I was overwhelmed(难以禁受)by the beauty of Kunqu for the first time in my life, and it
has stayed with me since.” Now, Wang has herself become a master of Kunqu. Her performances
have impressed generations ofaudiences and helped to promote theart form among young people.

You forget to bring your water bottle to the airport, so you buy a plastic one and keep refilling
it. Or you order takeout for dinner and save the black plastic container to pack your lunch the next
day. Reuse is one of the core rules of sustainability(可持续性). But should you be reusing these
single-useplastics? Experts sayno.
Single-use plastics leach ( 滤 出 ) chemicals and shed microplastics( 微 塑 料 ) into your
environment. Though studies have not directly compared single-use and reusable plastic, experts say
they are more worried about single-use plastics because of how they’re made. A single-use plastic
water bottle sheds micro and nano plastics into your water when you refill it, and a takeout container
or frozen meal tray sheds these particles into your food. Chemical exposure increases if plastic is
heated, typically in a microwave, a dishwasher or even by placing hot food in a takeout container.
When heat is applied, molecules(分子) move faster, meaning it could be easier for some of these
particles to make itsway into your food.
Concerns with chemicals and microplastics primarily apply to food, experts said, because you
are eating them. Reusing single-use plastics like grocery bags is not a major concern, they added.
The most important thing you should do is avoid heating your plastic, experts agreed. “A pretty
hard-and-fast rule is to never microwave plastic,” Enck said. “And there’s also a suggestion not to
putplastic intothedishwasher ifit’s onahot cycle.”

The world’s animal populations have decreased (减少) by more than two-thirds since 1970,
according to arecent research from theWorldWildlifeFund (WWF).
The London group provided information on 32,000 wildlife populations which included more
than 5,000 species (物种). The researchers found that population sizes had declined (下降) by 69
percent on average. They said the loss of forests, human exploitation (开发) of the environment,
pollution, and climate change were great causes of theloss. Land-use change is still thebiggest threat
to wildlife. However, the researchers added, “if we cannot limit warming to 1.5°C, climate change is
likelyto become theimportant cause ofbiodiversity (生物多样性)lossin thecoming years.”
Wildlife populations in Latin American and the Caribbean Sea area were greatly affected. The
research showed a 94 percent drop in those areas in over 50 years. Wildlife populations in river and
lake habitats decreased the most. Freshwater populations have declined by an average of 83 percent
since 1970. For example, one population of pink river dolphins in the Amazon River area of Brazil
fell by65percent between 1994and 2016.
These findings are a red flag that warns of a larger system failure on the horizon. Even one
species’population decline can affect other species, eventually impacting the ecosystem’s ability to
function. Humans depend on a stable climate, predictable weather patterns, and productive farmland
and fisheries to thrive (蓬勃发展), but the current trends are severe enough to threaten many
life-sustaining systems.

{#{QQABZQ8w4gg4kIaA学科C网(北C京)股份6有限K公司BQXiCgmYkJAgLAgEgQAWKARDwBFABAA=}#}Our future depends on reversing (扭转) the loss of nature just as much as it depends on
addressing climate change. And you can’t solve one without solving the other. Everyone has a role in
reversing these trends, from individuals to companies to governments. If nothing changes, animal
populations will undoubtedly continue to fall, driving wildlife to extinction and threatening the
integrity oftheecosystems onwhich weall depend.
32.Whatis thegreatest threat to wildlifepopulations currently?
A. Illegal hunting.

{#{QQABZQ8w4gg4kIaA学科C网(北C京)股份6有限K公司BQXiCgmYkJAgLAgEgQAWKARDwBFABAA=}#}Plan ahead. Most long-distance trains, especially the sleeping car accommodations, sell out very
quickly. 37 But no matter when you travel, it’s a good idea to book your tickets at least 90
days in advance.
Use a travel agent. Consider turning your travel plan over to a travel agent (旅行社) and letting
him double-check all the details, make suggestions, and then handle the actual reservations. A good
one can sometimes find you discounted (打折) tickets. 38 Then you won’t have to walk
through several cars ona movingtrain three times adayfor your meals.
Bringablanket.When you’re ridingontrains, you won’t beprovided with ablanke(t 毯子)for

conditioningcan make themquitecold.
Arrive early. Most trains operate just once a day and some run only three times a week, so
missing yours can be a disaster. 40 Note: The times listed on the schedules are departure
times,not arrival times.
Have fun. Train trips aren’t for impatient types. Read a book, knit, do a crossword puzzle, or
simply watch the world unfold outside the window. To calculate your speed as you do, divide 3,600
(the number of seconds in an hour) by the number of seconds it takes you to travel one mile (the
distance between two mileposts). If it takes the train 53 seconds to travel one mile, you’re going
67.92mph.

I didn’t like Del so much. He always called me the nickname “Germy”, which meant “dirty”,
instead of my real name “Jamie”. Besides, he was known as a trouble-maker in school. So when the
head teacher Mr. Smith asked Del to come to his office, I naturally thought that Del had done
something bad to someone. Through the window, I saw a smaller boy crying. Del seemed unhappy,
too.
He did not return to class that day. All of us were discussing what had happened to him. What
else could such an annoying (令人讨厌的) boy do? “He must have hit the boyand was sent home,” I
said to myfriends secretly.Theireyes widened. It felt good to see them sointerested in what Isaid.
The next morning, the whole school was talking about Del being expelled (开除) for beating up
a kid. I was surprised that my assumptions were passed on so quickly. So when Del walked into the
classroom, all the kids were shocked. The kids next to him shifted their desks away. “What’s your
problem?” Del asked. “I don’t want you to attack me,” one kid said. Some laughed. “Yeah, I might,”
said Del. I could tellhe was joking, but many kidsthought headmitted he didbeat upsomeone.
During recess (课间休息), Del tried to join the kickball game. “Neither team wants you,” one of
the players said. “Why?” Del asked, looking confused. “I always play with you guys.” They ignored
him and went on playing. Del sat by himself while the rest of the school enjoyed their recess away
from him. Del looked lonely and sad, much different from before. I started to feel sorry for him.
Later that day,I learned what really happened. The kidwas Del’s little brother and he was crying
because their mother fell ill and was sent to hospital. I felt even sorrier for what I said before. I
started a rumor(谣言).
