“Lei ming m ming baak ngo gong ge waa ah? Do you understand what I am saying?” I stare back at the speaker
blankly, my lips parted, the ideas clear in my mind but a response unable to express itself in a language in my distant
range. After an uncomfortable pause, a few words came out of my mouth, sounding forced and unnatural.
The anecdote (轶事) above is a semi-conversation I had in Malaysia years ago. A three-week stay in Malaysia
once every few years was often the best part of my summers - what more can you ask from a food heaven? But besides
the family, food, and escape that Malaysia offered, trips also brought mixed feelings of guilt (愧疚) that I just couldn’t
seem to translate. For one month every few summers, I got a taste of what it feels to be an outsider in my own culture,
学科网(北京)股份有限公司looking in. I was a girl lost in translation, quietly absorbing the various tongues shouted in the wet markets, and
nodding along at my grandparents’ huge family dinners.
In America though, I am a different person. I don’t think twice about my grammar when speaking. I don’t
struggle with the words and fear that my stories won’t get through to people. So as a native English speaker, I do not
have to worry daily about whether I’m judged for having an accent or whether I’m misunderstood across languages. In
Malaysia, I naturally burst out “have you eaten?” instead of recalling the Malaysian expressions “you makan already?”
In Malaysia, everything about the way I speak — my accent, intonation, sentence structure, slang — gives me away.
My American-ness is seen in the way I talk, dress, and act. Maybe my face could pass for a Malaysian local, but once I
open my mouth to speak I am so clearly not. It is uncomfortable and awkward, and sometimes I wonder if I did not
look Asian at all would it be better, since there would be no more language expectation for me than for a white tourist.
24.Which of the following can best describe the author in the anecdote?
A.Awkward. B.Anxious. C.Confident. D.Upset.
25.What made the author feel guilty according to Paragraph 2?
A.Enjoying Malaysian food too much.
B.Short visits causing family distance.
C.Failing to translate dialects at markets.
D.Cultural disconnect during family time.
26.What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A.The author avoids speaking in Malaysia.
B.The author feels trapped by language.
C.The author prefers American identity.
D.The author’s face causes confusion.
27.What does the text mainly talk about?
A.Food culture in Malaysia.
B.A girl between two cultures.
C.Challenges from learning Malay language.
D.Differences between American and Malaysian cultures.

You forget to bring your water bottle to the airport, so you buy a plastic one and keep refilling it. Or you order
takeout for dinner and save the black plastic container to pack your lunch the next day. Reuse is one of the core rules of
sustainability. But should you be reusing these single-use plastics? Experts say no.
Single-use plastics leach (滤出) chemicals and shed (释放) microplastics into your environment. Though studies
have not directly compared single-use and reusable plastic, experts say they are more concerned about single-use
plastics because of how they’re made. A single-use plastic water bottle sheds micro-and nanoplastics into your water
when you refill it, and a takeout container or frozen meal tray sheds these particles into your food. Chemical exposure
学科网(北京)股份有限公司increases if plastic is heated, typically in a microwave, a dishwasher or even by placing hot food in a takeout container.
When heat is applied, molecules move faster, meaning it could be easier for some of these particles to make its way
into your food.
The danger of heating your plastic also applies to reusable plastic, like baby bottles and plastic storage containers,
according to Judith Enck, president of Beyond Plastics. Research found that black plastic in sushi trays, and other
objects contain high levels of flame retardants (阻燃剂). These poisonous chemicals have been linked to physical and
mental problems.
Concerns with chemicals and microplastics primarily apply to food, experts said, because you are swallowing
them. Reusing single-use plastics like grocery bags is not a major concern, they added. The most important thing you
should do is avoid subjecting your plastic to heat, experts agreed. “A pretty hard-and-fast rule is to never microwave
plastic,” Enc k said. “And there’s also a recommendation not to put plastic into the dishwasher if it’s on a hot cycle.”
If you order takeout, it’s best to transfer the food to a nonplastic dish as soon as possible, and you should use a
plate when microwaving your food.
28.Why does the author list examples in the first paragraph?
A.To lead in the topic. B.To prove the experts’ opinion.
C.To analyse the reason. D.To introduce background information.
29.What can we learn from the research?
A.Plastic bottles of good quality is encouraged to use.
B.It is the chemicals in the materials that cause trouble.
C.High temperature makes little difference to takeout food.
D.Reusable plastic is more dangerous than single-use plastic.
30.Which situation poses the biggest threat to human’s health?
A.Heating fast food in a glass bowl.
B.Filling the grocery bag with meat.
C.Packing cold drink with single-use plastics.
D.Ordering hot soup contained in a plastic bag.
31.What is a suitable title for the text?
A.Stop Using Single-use Plastics
B.Reusing Single-use Plastics Is Harmful
C.How to Correctly Use Single-use Plastics
D.The Astonishing Fact of Single-use Plastics

With an AI tool, researchers study penguin photos taken by tourists and scientists to track Adélie penguins in
Antarctica. “Right now, everyone has a camera in their pocket, and the number of photos we could collect for studying
will be out of our expectation,” says Thomas Brown, a scientist from an international research team.
学科网(北京)股份有限公司With guidance from an expert, the AI tool is able to get a handle on and draw out the penguin groups in photos.
Compared with human, the AI finds and marks Adélie penguins in these photos more quickly, taking only 5 to 10
seconds per image.
The team created a 3D map of the Antarctica to know exactly where the photos were taken. By identifying the
details in the tourist pictures, the researchers could place the photographer and the habitats of the Adélie penguin
groups within the 3D map to get a bird’s eye view. This allows researchers to track how Adélie penguin groups change
in location and population size over time. Such tracking is important because it can tell the climate changes. That is
what researchers want to know. Similarly, the AI tool can also use historical photos to track natural signs such as
glacier (冰川) changes that develop very slowly and may only be obvious by looking across many years.
Opinions about AI tools are different among researchers. Some worry that using tourist photos for research may
encourage more people to visit Antarctica, which might lead to more tourist activities and could destroy the ecosystem
in the end. However, for Thomas, he believes studying tourist photos with the AI tool could be useful, especially as
many penguin groups have not been noticed by the research community. “Since Antarctica is hard to study twenty-
four-seven,” says Thomas, “this method is helpful for keeping an eye on penguin groups that might only get studied
once in a while.”
32.Why do the research team use an AI tool in their study?
A.To collect the photos from tourists. B.To follow moving paths of penguins.
C.To study the photos taken by tourists. D.To identify the 3D map of Antarctica.
33.Which of the following can replace the underlined “get a handle on” in Paragraph 2?
A.Identify. B.Ignore.
C.Explore. D.Revise.
34.What do researchers want to know by tracking Adélie penguins?
A.Glacier sizes. B.Location marks.
C.Climate changes. D.Penguin numbers.
35.What is the text mainly about?
A.3D map helps locate penguin groups. B.Adélie penguins help develop AI tools.
C.Penguins show signs of climate change. D.Researchers use AI to track penguin groups.
