The History of Roses
According to fossil records, roses are over 35 million years old and they were first
cultivated in China about 5,000 years ago. A Chinese emperor in the 6th century BC apparently
had over 600 books 21 roses in his library, and oil was drawn from those 22
(plant) in his garden. However, only the highest members of society were allowed 23
(use) it. If anyone else 24 (find) with even a small amount, they were sentenced to
death. Roses were also popular with the Romans, who used them as medicine and a source of
perfume.
Cultivated roses were only introduced to 25 is now Western Europe in the 18th
century. Napoleon’s wife, Josephine, started a botanical garden near Paris, 26 she
collected all the known varieties of roses and encouraged the breeding of new ones. This led to the
flowers 27 (gain) increasing popularity. In Britain at that time roses were so valuable

Recently, a song called “APT” has sparked a global craze.
So, what exactly is “APT” talking about? What exactly does the continuously 31
“APT” in the song mean? It turns out that “APT” is short for the Korean word “ ”, meaning
for “apartment”. The song was 32 by a classic Korean drinking table game. The lyrics
directly express the girl’s mind, with the development of the party, the relationship between the
two sides 33 heating up.
However, behind the song’s popularity is not just about the 34 melody (旋律). In
recent years, the development of short video platforms has provided a new ground for the
popularity of such songs. Data show that the average daily use time of the short video platform is
151 minutes per day, and the user stickiness is extremely high. These platforms 35 “short,
flat, fast” operation pattern, and songs with strong rhythm and short lyrics are easier to capture
users’ attention.
The success of “APT” also lies in its strong “ear-worm 36 ”, which allows simple
melodies to reverberate (回响;回荡) through the listeners’ brains and still “reside” (居住;停留)
in the mind even when the music stops playing. Major music companies 37 of launching
songs that meet the needs of short video platforms want to 38 the benefits traffic has
brought in this field.
However, this phenomenon has also raised some doubts. Some people 39 that this
试卷第 1 页,共 3 页“chanting” (反复唱的) song is too simplistic and lacks depth. Still, the huge market potential of
such songs cannot be 40 . From a cost and benefit perspective, they have a higher
“value for money”. The success of APT provides us with a phenomenon worth thinking about. To
follow hot style or adhere to their own music concept and unique style is the creators’ free choice.
But to find their own position between the market demand and personal expression, is perhaps the
most worthy path to pursue.

It is natural that young people are often uncomfortable when they are with their parents.
They say that their parents don’t 41 them. They often think that their parents are out of
touch with modern ways; that they are too 42 and too strict with their children; and
they seldom give their children a 43 hand. It is true that parents often find it difficult to
win their children’s trust and they tend to forget how they themselves felt when 44 .
For example, young people like to act on the spot without much thinking. It is one of their

from the older people’s world, into which they have not yet been 50 . That’s why young
people want to make a new culture of their own. And if their parents do not like music or
entertainment or clothes or their way of speech, this will make the young people extremely happy.
Sometimes you are so 51 yourself that you do not want your parents to say “yes”

after being a child for so many years, when you were 53 under your parents’ control.

My husband and I were once in Nepal (尼泊尔) to see sunrise over the Himalayas.
试卷第 1 页,共 3 页One morning we awoke to total darkness at 5 o’clock. As we rushed through a town with
cameras in hand, I noticed the calm, gentle way the Nepalese people greeted the morning. One
man boiled a huge pot of milk tea, and other villagers gathered around his fire, cupping their
hands around small glasses of the steaming sweet mixture. It was fascinating, but not to be left
behind, we joined the stream of tourists moving quickly up to the lookout point.
The top was crowded when we arrived, but after 10 minutes of cold waiting, the assembled
group gave up. “The cloud cover is too heavy,” one said. Then one by one they rushed down the
hill to the next item on their sightseeing list. I was disappointed as well, but suddenly I noticed a
small Nepalese boy absently playing with a stick and shooting quick glances at the clouds. He
must know something we don’t, I thought. I decided to wait with him.
The boy and I didn’t have to wait long. Moments later, a tiny stream of golden light burned
through one thick cloud, then another. Rose-colored fog warmed the backs of the clouds, and
suddenly the morning sun stole a glance around the side of the mountain, miles above where I’d
expected it to be.
Nothing I’d seen before prepared me for the moment the clouds withdrew with bowed
heads, and the magnificent Himalayas were revealed before, around, and above me. I sat in
astonishment, not breathing, not daring to look away, certain that God had placed me here at the
backdoor of Earth to show me what Heaven really looks like. I certainly got the message. Never
again will I rush a sunrise. I now know Nature will supply her fruits to me only when I am truly
ready to receive them.

Some people have said aging is more a slide into forgetfulness than a journey towards
wisdom. However, a growing body of research suggests that late-in-life learning is possible. In
reality, education does an aging brain good.
Throughout life, people’s brains constantly renovate themselves. In the late 1960s, British
brain scientist Geoffrey Raisman spied growth in damaged brain regions of rats through an
electron microscope; their brains were forming new connections. This meant brains may change
every time a person learns something new.
试卷第 1 页,共 3 页Of course, that doesn’t mean the brain isn’t affected by the effects of time. Just as height
usually declines over the years, so does brain volume: Humans lose about 4 percent every decade
starting in their 40s. But that reduction doesn’t necessarily make people think slower; as long as
we are alive and functioning, we can alter our brains with new information and experiences.
In fact, scientists now suspect accumulating novel experiences, facts, and skills can keep
people’s minds more flexible. New pathways can strengthen our ever-changing mental structure,
even as the brain shrinks.
Conventional fixes like word puzzles and brain-training apps can contribute to mental
durability. Even something as simple as taking a different route to the grocery store or going
somewhere new on vacation can keep the brain healthy.
A desire for new life challenges can further boost power. Research about aging adults who
take on new enterprises shows improved function and memory as well as a reduced risk of mental
disease. Openness — a characteristic defined by curiosity and a desire for knowledge — may
also help folks pass brain tests. Some folks are born with this take-in-the-world attitude, but those
who aren’t as genetically gifted aren’t necessarily out of luck. While genes can encourage an
interest in doing new things, a 2012 study in the journal Psychology and Aging found completing
reasoning tasks like puzzles and number games can enhance that desire for novel experiences,
which can, in turn, refresh the brain. That’s why brain scientist Richard Kennedy says “It’s not
that old dogs can’t learn new tricks. It’s that maybe old dogs don’t realize why they should.”
63.What do some people think of aging adults?
A.Their wisdom grows as time goes by in their long life.
B.They can benefit from late-in-life learning and gain wisdom.
C.Their memory gradually becomes inferior to that of the past.
D.They are likely to have mental health issues due to forgetfulness.
64.What can we conclude from Geoffrey Raisman’s finding?
A.Brain damage seriously hinders one’s learning.
B.Brains can refresh and improve with learning.
C.Brain power weakens slower than we imagine.
D.Brains forge connections under new conditions.
65.What is one thing that helps maintain the health of our brain even as it shrinks?
试卷第 1 页,共 3 页A.Doing daily routines by conventional means
B.Avoiding worrying about our mental durability
C.Imitating old dogs’ way of learning new tricks
D.Approaching everyday tasks in novel ways
66.What is the finding of the 2012 study in the journal Psychology and Aging?
A.Wishing to solve puzzles enhances one’s reasoning power
B.Playing number games unexpectedly stimulates one’s memory
C.Desiring new experiences can help to renovate the brain
D.Learning new tricks should not be confined to old dogs only
Section C
Directions: Read the following passages. Fill in each blank with a proper sentence given in the box.
Each sentence can be used only once. Note that there are two more sentences than you need.
How Green Is the Building?
In the world leaders meeting in Paris agreed to move towards zero net greenhouse-gas
emissions in the second half of this century. That is a tall order, and the building industry makes it
even taller. Cement-making alone produces 6% of the world’s carbon emission. 67 If
you factor in all of the energy that goes into lighting, heating and cooling homes and offices, the
world’s buildings start to look like a severe environmental problem.
Governments in the rich world are now trying to promote greener behavior by obliging
developers to build new projects to “zero carbon” standards. 68 All other types of
buildings will follow in January of the next year. Governments in eight further countries are being
advised to introduce a similar policy.
69 Wind turbines and solar panels on top of buildings look good but are much
less productive than-wind and solar farms. And the standards only count the emissions from
running a building, not those let out when it was made. Those are thought to account for between
30% and 60% of the total over a structure’s lifetime. Buildings can become greener. They can use
more recycled steel and can be pre-made.
The energy required to produce a wooden beam is one-sixth of that required for a steel one
试卷第 1 页,共 3 页of comparable strength. When a mature tree is cut down, a new one can be planted to replace it,
capturing more carbon. After buildings are torn down, old roofs are easy to recycle into-new
structures. And for older buildings-to be more energy-efficient, wood is a good insulator (绝缘体).
70
Governments can help urge the industry to use more wood, particularly in the public sector
— the construction industry’s biggest client. That would help wood-building specialists achieve
greater scale and lower costs.
A.For example, a softwood window frame provides 400 times as much insulation as a steel and
1,000 times as an aluminum.
B.However, these standards are less green than they may seem.
C.In January, all new buildings in the EU must be built to “nearly zero-energy” standards.
D.Steel half of which goes into buildings, accounts for another 8%.
E.This would favor wood as well as innovative ways of producing other materials.
F.Zero-carbon building regulations should be altered to include the material emissions.
