Here’s the chance to get published in the Guardian for nature boys and girls
Once again, the Young Country Diary series is open for submissions! Every three months, as the UK enters a
new season, we ask you to send us an article written by a child aged 8-14. The article needs to be about a recent
encounter they’ve had with nature.
Six winning entries will be chosen and published in the Guardian newspaper and online — two in March,
two in April and a final two in May. The deadline for submissions is noon on Monday 31 March. If you send your
piece in early enough, you stand a chance of being published on 22 March.
How your child can take part
First of all, we’re looking for children aged 8 to 14, so we will need your permission as parent or guardian.
Then here’s what the child needs to do:
Step 1. Go out one day to where there is some nature. It could be their local woods, their garden, or simply the
nearest park.
Step 2. Write an article of 200-250 words telling us what they saw and what happened.
Step 3. Send the article to us using the form below.
Please Note:
Anyone can enter their child who is aged between 8 and 14 and based in the UK. You, the parent/guardian will
be contacted if your child’s piece is selected for publication, and you will be paid on behalf of the child.
We ask that the parent/guardian fills in the form attached, rather than your child. Your responses are secure asthe form is encrypted (加密) and only the Guardian has access to your contributions. One of our journalists will
be in contact with you before we publish, so please do leave contact details.
21. Which of the following is true?
A. The deadline is May 22nd.
B. The article shouldn’t be more than 250 words.
C. The winning entries will be published online only.
D. Earlier submissions are more likely to be published.
22. What is a requirement for participation?
A. Parents should pay for their kids’ participation.
B. The form attached should be filled by the child.
C. The contribution should be open to all the participants.
D. Contact information should be available to the Guardian.
23. Who are the intended readers of the passage?
A. Parents B. Writers
C. Nature Lovers D. Young reporters
B
My dog, Matisse, is a therapy (治疗) dog — by nature and by training. Sometimes after a day’s work, she
collapses from exhaustion on our car ride home. Focusing on others is hard work.
For fun, she visits a park and runs off-leash. During that time, she’ll sidle (羞怯地走) up to some people, who
smile and reach out to her. She lets them pet her for a bit and then moves on. But sometimes, she approaches a
person, stops, and does not move in. Somehow, she knows this person isn’t up for a visit.
Watching her over time, I’ve learned a lesson: we need to adjust to whoever we’re interacting with. Matisse
does it instinctively; humans sometimes need to think about it. I am a coach for Boise State University’s Executive
MBA program and help participants identify and develop areas of leadership that they wish to improve. Often, it’s
behaviors like becoming a better listener, or even how to lead meetings (and not talk all of the time).
Many of those skills demand all-round ability. What works with one person may not with another so leaders
must find ways to adapt their behaviors or ways of communicating to fit the situation. That ability to read the
others, to understand from small cues — spoken and not — how to interact often seems effortless to Matisse but
can be challenging for many people.
I wonder if our egos (自我) get in the way sometimes, and that’s where I look to Matisse. She is ego free. She
gives herself and her time to people who want to interact with her, who she can tell might need a calm, gentle
presence for a few minutes.Nothing profound but once again, dogs can teach us how to make life a little better.
24. What do we know about Matisse?
A. She is a natural runner.
B. She is too shy to play with strangers.
C. She can tell whether to approach a person.
D. She knows when to turn to people for help.
25. What does the underlined word “instinctively” in the third paragraph mean?
A. Naturally. B. Creatively. C. Hesitantly. D. Occasionally.
26. Which is the most important for a good leader?
A. Friendly attitude. B. MBA certification.
C. Easy-going personality. D. Flexible Adaptability.
27. Which is the best title of the passage?
A. Dogs are free of egos.
B. Let your ego guide you.
C. Get leadership insights from Matisse.
D. MBA program never disappoints you.
C
Today, open book-review pages, and you are more likely to see writers describing each other and their works
with such words as “brilliant” rather than, as they once did, “tiresome”. An editor for BuzzFeed, a news site, even
announced that its books section would not do negative book reviews at all. This was wonderful news for writers
everywhere. It was not such good news for readers.
The best bad reviews are scalpel(手术刀)jobs, observes the British critic Adam Mars-Jones, “because if it’s
not precise, it’s not going to work.” One of the finest was used by George Eliot on Charlotte Bronte’s “Jane Eyre”.
“I wish,” Eliot wrote, “the characters would talk a little less like the heroes and heroines of police reports”. Modern
reviewers rarely achieve such deadly beauty. All too often reviews are full of filler words: “darkly funny”, “deep
thinking”. Many of these imply the word “boring”, which is in effect forbidden(禁止)on literary pages.
The internet is one reason for this softening. It has changed both the economics of criticism(newspapers have
fewer book pages, so editors tend to fill them with the books you should read, not the ones you should not)and the
advisability of it. The internet has also helped decrease anonymity(匿名). Once, most reviews were anonymous.
Today, most reviewers are not only named but easily searchable. Whereas 30 years ago, critics were “encouraged to
really have a go at people”, now people are “terrified of giving public criticism”.
There have been attempts to bring back sharp criticism. In 2012 an award called the “Hatchet Job of the Year”was launched by two critics as a “mission against boredom and lazy thinking”. It ran only for three years. Fleur
Macdonald, one of its co-founders, thinks that “the literary scene probably needs it more than ever now”, but that it
struggled to get sponsorship since “bad book reviews can cause disagreements”.
28. What does the author imply about book reviews nowadays in paragraph 1?
A. They are getting longer.
B. They rarely offer sharp criticism.
C. They are highly beneficial to readers.
D. They show less regard for writers’ feelings.
29. What does the author think of Eliot’s review of “Jane Eyre”?
A. It put the writer at a disadvantage. B. It influenced modern reviewers.
C. It was done in an exact way. D. It was full of empty words.
30. What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. The recent history of book reviews.
B. The modern practices of book reviews.
C. The reasons for worsening book reviews.
D. The impact of the internet on book reviews.
31. What can we learn about the “Hatchet Job of the Year?”
A. It met with challenges. B. It has been running for years.
C. It inspired many critics. D. It brought about disagreements.
D
Some late Stone Age Europeans may have carried make-up inside mini bottles worn around their necks or
waists more than 6,000 years ago.
Researchers have found traces of ingredients (成分) known to be used in cosmetics by later civilizations inside
small bottles unearthed in Slovenia, dating to between 4, 350 and 4,100 BC, more than 200 years earlier than
previously thought. In 2014, Bine Kramberger at the Institute for the PCHS found a mini ceramic bottle at an
ancient site once occupied by people of the Lasinja culture in around 4,350 BC. More than 100 similar bottles have
also been found.
Their purpose was unknown, but it is thought that some might have been children’s toys. Curiously, most of
them have holes in their tiny handles or edges that archaeologists think people threaded string through, enabling
them to be worn around the neck or waist. But Kramberger’s finding was different because it contained a solid
white substance. “It was clear that it had valuable information because in such old archacological sites, we rarely
find containers that still keep remains of their former content,” he says.Long and thin stone tools were found near the bottle, which could have been used to extract the substance
within. Now, Kramberger and his colleagues have analyzed the substance in the bottle and examined 13 others from
the same period. The mystery material contained a white lead mineral called cerussite, while different lead minerals
were identified in two other bottles. The three lead-containing bottles also had contents coming from beeswax (蜂
蜡) inside.
“The bottles’ contents could have been used for painting,” says Kramberger. But he says it is more likely that
they were cosmetics, because they contained common ingredients for such products known from later cultures.
Cerussite powder was very popular among the ancient Greeks and Romans for skin whitening remedies, despite its
known toxicity(毒性).
Gaydarska says the new study supports what archacologists have long thought — “that the abilities and
cultures of Neolithic people were far more complicated and comprehensive than they are often given credit for”.
32. Why are the small bottles unearthed in Slovenia special?
A. The bottles might have been worn around the necks or waists.
B. The bottles contained some ingredients related to the make-up.
C. The time of the bottles is much earlier than previously thought.
D. Researchers were astonished at the number of the similar bottles.
33. According to Kramberger’s finding, what is the substance contained in the bottles?
A. String. B. White paint. C. Stone tools. D. Cerussite.
34. What can we learn from the last two paragraphs?
A. The contents in the bottle contains some ingredients unknown to later cultures.
B. Cerussite powder was a perfect solution to skin problems for ancient Europeans.
C. Cerussite powder is popular among the Greeks and Romans although it’s toxic.
D. The culture of Neolithic people were commonly believed to be easy and simple.
35. What does the passage mainly talk about?
A. People in ancient times had an eye for beauty.
B. Europeans may have worn make-up in the Stone Age.
C. Contents of the bottles found in Slovenia were analyzed.
D. There are various reasons for ancient Europeans’ wearing make-up.
