Despite the rise of digital technology, the world is still hungry for paper. Between four and eight billion trees
are cut down every year to meet demand. When he was just 16 and still at school, Valentyn Frechka wanted to
reduce deforestation and find an alternative to cellulose (纤维素) — paper’s main raw material. While hiking in the
Carpathian Mountains, he wondered if fallen leaves could be the answer.
In 2021, after three years of testing in school laboratories, Frechka met a businessman named Alexander
Sobolenko. “We decided to start Releaf Paper as a commercial project. He showed his innovation at several
international school Olympiads in the United States, South Korea and Kenya, and received positive feedback from
everyone.” Sobolenko explains. The idea is as simple as it is attractive. Releaf Paper turns what is normally green waste into a brand-new
product. The word “Releaf” is a homophone of the start-up’s mission: to provide relief to the environment. “We
cooperate with big cities,” Sobolenko says. “The leaves are delivered to our production center, and we do some
basic cleaning, washing and drying, and then, we granulate (制成颗粒) it, so that we can use the leaves throughout
the year.” The granules are turned into pulp (浆), similar to wood pulp, which paper factories use to produce paper.
Cities collect fallen leaves and, normally, compost or burn them. Releaf Paper offers a more environmentally
friendly solution. “Sometimes, leaves are stored for six months or more, before being composted, and that creates
emissions,” says Sobolenko. “We help cities get rid of leaves for free. Our production causes very low CO2
emissions.”
What does the future hold? Sobolenko is developing plans to expand internationally. “There are countries
with a lot of tropical fruit waste — pineapples and bananas, for example,” he explains. “We found that, with
pineapple, we can make paper and produce hygiene products, such as tissues and toilet paper. The technology is the
same, but the yield of the fibers is different.”
24.Why did Valentyn Frechka want to find an alternative to cellulose?
A.To invent a new type of paper. B.To protect forests.
C.To reduce the production cost. D.To earn enough money.
25.What can we learn about Releaf Paper from the passage?
A.It transforms fallen leaves into pulp. B.It collects fallen leaves at a high cost.
C.It was started by Alexander Sobolenko. D.It has been launched in several countries.
26.What does paragraph 4 talk about?
A.The method of storing fallen leaves. B.Releaf Paper’s working process.
C.Releaf Paper’s environmental benefits. D.The contributions to city economy.
27.What is Sobolenko’s plan for the future of Releaf Paper?
A.To focus mainly on paper products. B.To widen raw materials globally.
C.To replace leaves with fruit waste. D.To shift from cities to farming regions.
In West Africa, particularly in Cameroon, Ivory Coast, and Togo, mental health remains a significant taboo
and therapy (治疗) services are almost nonexistent. In this challenging environment, hairdressers have emerged as
trusted community figures providing informal mental health support.
The Bluemind Foundation, an international non-governmental organization, whose constant message is
“mental health is health” has created the Heal by Hair program. Through a three-day course, it trains over 400hairdressers to act as “mental health ambassadors” by teaching them active listening skills and how to recognize
signs of depression and gender-based violence. These hairdressers become first points of contact for customers
facing mental health issues, offering comfort and guidance. They also refer customers to professionals or
authorities when necessary, though many face financial (财政) and societal limits to formal care.
The program captures values of listening and support in everyday salon interactions, a communal space
where women traditionally spend time. Already, over 150 hairdressers have been trained in countries like Togo,
Ivory Coast, and Cameroon, and the initiative has reached over 100,000 women and plans to expand further across
Africa. By 2035, Bluemind Foundation aims to train 1,000 hairdressers in 20 African cities, and to help improve the
mental health of 2,000,000 African women.
The New York Times article highlights the significant impact of Heal By Hair. The project not only
addresses the shame surrounding mental health but empowers women hairdressers to become recognized
community leaders and emotional support figures, transforming their salons into safe spaces for discussion and
healing, and making it a new cornerstone of mental health support. This grassroots approach highlights the
importance of accessible mental health care solutions in regions with limited resources.
28.What does the underlined word “taboo” in paragraph 1 probably mean?
A.A pressing issue. B.A sex difference.
C.A deadly disease. D.A socially unacceptable topic.
29.Which of the following is a task of “mental health ambassadors”?
A.Teaching women good listening and oral skills.
B.Decorating their hair salons into a training room.
C.Offering aid to those showing signs of depression.
D.Financing those who can’t afford formal mental care.
30.How does the author present the program’s influence in paragraph 3?
A.By providing data. B.By giving examples.
C.By quoting an expert. D.By making comparisons.
31.What does The New York Times think of the Heal By Hair program?
A.It’s risk-free. B.It’s misleading. C.It’s short-lived. D.It’s pioneering.
As a region frequently affected by drought in Africa, the Sahel used to suffer from severe water shortages.
But in recent decades, climate change and population growth have worsened the situation, with numerous
communities lacking access to clean drinking water. This critical shortage led to widespread water-related diseasesand even forced migration in some severely affected areas, with experts warning that traditional water sources
might dry up within the coming years. That was where the innovative AquaSol initiative came in.
The AquaSol project, a program aimed at providing clean water in the Sahel, has celebrated the successful
installation of 50 solar-powered water purification units (净水装置) this year. The newest station, named “Hope
Spring” by local communities with its origin in a native proverb, symbolizes an optimistic future where clean water
is no longer an impossible luxury but a daily reality.
Hope Spring represents a key part of the AquaSol initiative that brings together tech companies, non-profits,
and international agencies in a mission to deal with water shortage using renewable energy. For the project,
efficient solar panels (太阳能板) power advanced purification systems that clean groundwater, which is then safely
stored in specialized tanks for community use. So far, Hope Spring has reliably provided safe water for over 40,000
people, with several villages already achieving self-sufficiency (自给自足) in water supply.
The Sahel’s selection as the main site is strategic, given its high solar energy potential and urgent water
needs. Government policies that support green technology and local partnerships have created an ideal environment
for such innovations. The success of these solar water stations points to a brighter future not only for water security
but also for the application of clean energy in solving global issues. As Dr. Amina Diallo, the project leader, stated,
“With practical models like AquaSol, we can extend similar solutions to other dry regions where people’s lives are
threatened by water shortage.”
32.What is a result of the water shortage in Sahel?
A.Worsening climate. B.Increasing population.
C.The spread of illnesses. D.The replacement of water sources.
33.What is the main purpose of the AquaSol project?
A.To offer accessible clean water. B.To ensure enough water storage.
C.To research climate change effects. D.To better water purification units.
34.What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A.How Hope Spring functions. B.What villagers think of the project.
C.The importance of clean groundwater. D.The effectiveness of solar panels.
35.What is the best title for the text?
A.Water Purification Units: A Fresh Hope
B.Hope Spring: A New Beginning
C.Solar power: A Bright Future of Energy
D.AquaSol: A Solution for Thirsty LandsWith leaves covering the ground and cool air hinting at the colder days ahead, this season goes by two
names: autumn and fall. But why do Americans tend to call it fall while the British prefer autumn? 36
Before “autumn” and “fall” became widespread, the season was often called “harvest”, reflecting the
season’s main purpose. As society shifted from farm life to more city-centered living, the word “harvest” gradually
lost its meaning as the name of the season and became more specifically associated with the act of gathering crops.
37 .
The word “autumn” can be traced back to the Latin word “autumnus”, which originally meant “the season of
early rains”. In ancient Rome, “autumnus” referred to the period of the year between summer and winter. 38
. As the Roman Empire expanded, so did the usage of “autumnus” across Europe. As time went by, “autumn”
gradually came to be widely used to describe the season.
39 . In 16th-century England, expressions like “fall of the leaf” and “fall of the year” became
common to describe the season when leaves dropped from trees. These phrases were eventually shortened to “fall”,
a direct and visually clear term. When English settlers moved to the American colonies (殖民地) during the 17th
century, they carried this term with them. 40 . Meanwhile, “autumn” stayed the preferred term in
England, valued for its smoother sound and its ties to ideas of life, change and decline.
Today, both words are used in the UK and the US. For Americans, “fall” is more common. In the UK, the
opposite is true.
A.Because there are lots of leaves in both two countries.
B.The answer lies in a mix of history, language and culture.
C.In fact, “harvest” means gathering crops at the end of the growing cycle.
D.Compared with “autumn”, “fall” developed through a simpler shift in language.
E.Over time, “fall” became more popular in North America because it was easy to use.
F.It was a time of change as the leaves fell from the trees and the temperature dropped.
G.This change created space for “autumn” and “fall” to take over to describe the season.

Cold wind brushed against Leo’s cheeks as he hurried down the snowy sidewalk. His duty at the grocery
store had ended late, and he had skipped dinner just to clean up the mess in aisle (过道) four.
The streets were quiet, and the bus stop ahead looked like a tiny island in the dark. As Leo got closer, he saw
the red taillights of the last bus pulling away. “No!” he shouted, breaking into a run. But it was too late.
Leo stood there for a moment, breathing hard, watching the bus disappear down the street. His phone was
dead, his gloves were too thin and he had no money for a taxi. The walk home would take at least an hour, and the
snow was starting to fall again. Leo sat down on the cold bench, rubbing his hands together and trying not to feel
too sorry for himself.
Across the street, a small cafe still had its lights on. A sign in the window said “Open Late”, and warm
yellow light spilled out onto the sidewalk. Leo hesitated. He didn’t want to spend money he didn’t have, but he also
didn’t want to freeze. Finally, he crossed the street and pushed open the door.
Inside, it smelled like cinnamon and hot chocolate. The woman behind the counter looked up and gave him a
kind smile. “Long night?” she asked. Leo nodded and told her about the missed bus. “Well, sit down and warm up,”
she said, already pouring a drink. “This is free.”
Leo held the warm mug between his hands and took small sips (一小口), letting the heat return to his body. The cafe was quiet except for soft jazz playing in the background. The woman brought him a plate of cookies.

1. 续写词数应为100左右;

【原文】Teachers try many things to stop certain students from cheating (作弊) in exams. It’s a difficult task.
Modern technology has given students new ways to cheat. But a college in the Philippines has used an easy way to
make students keep their eyes only on their own papers. That is the anti-cheating hat. The idea comes from a
professor from Bicol University College of Engineering. She asked students to wear special hats during tests. The
hats should be able to prevent them from seeing around. Students were happy with the idea, because they got to
design and make their own hats. Students came up with all kinds of interesting creations. They used paper, boxes,
and other recycled materials to create their hats. Photos of the anti-cheating hats spread on social media. The
professor said the hats were a fun way to make sure there was honesty in tests. She added that the hats were also
very useful for keeping students focused.

Embarrassed, Leo refused to take them. Hungry as he was, Leo shook his head and had to admit that he had
no money to pay for the plate of cookies. “Take them,” she said gently, placing the plate before him. “Everyone
needs a little kindness sometimes.” Deeply moved by her kindness, he finally tasted a cookie, its sweetness
seeming to melt the lingering chill in his heart. As he ate, they chatted briefly about work, snowy nights, and small
acts of compassion. Before stepping back into the cold, Leo bowed deeply, vowing to repay this city’s hidden
kindness one day. What started as a cold night and an empty stomach has transformed into a warm-hearted and
beautiful memory.
