Clay wanted to share that belief with as many children as he could, so he started the Bryan Clay Foundation, which
provides learning and athletic opportunities to poor kids in Hawaii and California. Clay speaks to kids often and finds that
people want to hear what he has to say. “I don’t think I’m any different from anybody else who speaks, but because of this

Indentured labourers had to work for a required period of time, usually three years, to pay back their passage to
Australia and then they could earn money as free labourers. It was hard, dirty work in the Queensland countryside. Most
indenturedlabourerswere badlytreated, many returningto their homelands assoonas their indenturedperiodwas finished.
A small number married into local communities and stayed. Free labourers were also badly treated on the cane fields,

Moving to a new place — in my case, a new country — is always challenging. However, making the most of your
smartphone can make moving easier. 16 Whether waiting for the next ‘like’on Instagram or checking a friend’s latest
tweets, I’m glued to social media. While this habit can be seen as a waste of time, I underestimated (低估) how useful it
wouldbewhensettlingintoanewcountry.
17 Localorganizations andsocieties frequently keep their pages updatedwith events. For example, my friend andI
frequently attend a ‘language exchange’evening, which we learned about through Facebook. It’s a fun way to practise our
French!
I joined online groups for people in the same situation. 18 For example, when struggling with French culture, it’s
reassuring (安心的) to hear thatothers have the same experiences. However, always follow safety rules if you meetpeople
you’vemetonlineinreallife.
19 For example, try switching your phone’s language setting, and certain phrases become second nature.Apps like
Duolingo are handy for learning grammar, and never underestimate the power ofYouTube in learning a new language. By
