B(2022·陕西西安交通大学附属中学期末改编)
"How are you?" is a nice question. It's a friendly way that people greet
each other. But "How are you?" is also a very unusual question. It's a
question that often doesn't need an answer. The person who asks "How are
you?" hopes to hear the answer "Fine", even if the person's friend isn't fine.
The reason is that "How are you?" isn't really a question and "Fine" isn't
really an answer. They are simply other ways of saying "Hello" or "Hi".
Sometimes, people also don't say exactly what they mean. For example,
when someone asks "Do you agree?", the other person might think,"No, I
disagree. I think you're wrong". But it isn't very polite to disagree so strongly,
so the other person might say "I'm not sure". It's a nicer way to say that you
don't agree with someone.
People also don't say exactly what they are thinking when they finish
talking with other people. For example, many talks over the phone finish when
one person says "I have to go now". Often, the person who wants to hang up
gives an excuse: "Someone is at the door" or "Something is burning on the
stove". The excuses might be real, or not. Perhaps the person who wants to
hang up simply doesn't want to talk any more, but it isn't polite to say that.
The excuse is more polite and it doesn't hurt the other person.
Whether they are greeting each other, talking about an idea, or finishing a
talk, people don't say exactly what they are thinking. It's an important way
that people try to be nice to each other, and it's part of the game of language.
( )5.What do we know about "How are you?" from Paragraph 1?

Paragraph 2?
A. I disagree. B. I'm not sure.
C. You are wrong. D. Of course not.
( )7.Which of the following is NOT true about how to reply politely?
A. Don't show your disagreement too strongly.
B. Think twice when you want to say something exactly.
C. Give a real answer to any kind of questions.
D. Try to give a proper excuse.
( )8.What does the writer mainly want to tell us in the last paragraph?

B. Finish a talk with no excuse.
C. Talking is to play games with others.
D. Try to be polite to each other.

Cats are one of the most popular pets among Americans. So it is not
surprising that there are many American slang(俚语) expressions about cats.
Some cats like to catch small birds, like canaries(金丝雀). If someone
looks very proud of himself, we can say "He looks like the cat that ate the
canary."
Sometimes, a cat likes to play with a small animal it has caught. So if
you "play cat and mouse" with someone, it means that you change between
different kinds of behavior when dealing with another person. For example, a
girl might offer something sweet to her little brother, and then take it away
when he reaches for it.
Americans might say that something is "the cat's meow" or "the cat's
pajamas" to describe something that is the best or finest. "A copycat" is
someone who acts just like someone else or copies another person's work. "A
fat cat" is a person with a lot of money.
If you tell someone about something that is supposed to be a secret, but
he tells it to others, we say, "You let the cat out of the bag." If you are notable to speak or answer a question, someone might ask you if "the cat has
got your tongue(舌头)".
Have you ever watched children in a classroom when their teacher is
away for a few minutes? "When the cat's away, the mice will play." means
people sometimes act badly when there is no supervision(监管). You may have
heard the expression "Curiosity(好奇心) killed the cat." This means caring too
much about things that are not your business might cause problems.
If you have ever had cats as pets, you may know it is difficult to train
them or to get them to do something. Cats are not like sheep or cows that
can be made to move along as a group. So we say a difficult or impossible
job is like "herding(放牧) cats".
( )9.If someone has just won a prize and thinks highly of himself, we can
say " ."
A. He is the cat eating small birds
B. He is like the cat that looks very proud
C. He likes cats catching canaries D. He looks like the cat that ate the
canary
( )10.In which of the following situations do we use the expression "let the
cat out of the bag"?
A. Someone asked a lady about her age and weight and it made her get mad.
B. Someone has a broken leg, but he wants to swim across the Yangtze
River.
C. Someone promised to keep something that you told him to himself but
failed to do so.
D. Someone buys the same clothes and gets the same haircut as a famous
movie star does.
( )11.The passage is most probably taken from .
A. a scientific research paper B. a language book
C. a magazine of funny jokes D. a news website
DBody language is the quietest, most secret and most powerful language of
all! It is said that our body movements communicate about 50 percent of what
we really mean while words only express 7 percent. So, while your mouth is
closed, your body is just saying.
Arms. How you hold your arms shows how open and receptive you are
to people you meet. If you keep your arms to the sides of your body or
behind your back, this suggests you are not afraid of taking on whatever
comes your way. Outgoing people generally use their arms with big
movements, while quieter people keep them close to their bodies. If someone
upsets you, just cross your arms to show you're unhappy!
Head. When you want to appear confident, keep your head level. If you
are a monitor in class, you can also take on this position when you want your
words to be taken seriously. However, to be friendly in listening or speaking,
you must move your head a little.
Legs. Your legs tend to move around a lot more than normal when you
are nervous or telling lies. If you are at interviews, try to keep them still!
Posture(姿势). A good posture makes you feel better about yourself. If
you are feeling down, you normally don't sit straight, with your shoulders
inwards. This makes breathing more difficult, which can make you feel
nervous or uncomfortable.
Mouth. When you are thinking, you often purse(噘起) your lips. You
might also use this position to hold back an angry comment you don't wish to
show. However, it will probably still be noticed, and people will know you're
not pleased.
Face. When you lie, you might put on a false face. But that expression
would crack briefly, allowing displays of true emotions such as happiness,
sadness, disgust(厌恶) and fear to come through.
( )12.When someone is keeping his arms behind his back, what does he
probably try to tell?
A. He is smart. B. He is cool.
C. He is not afraid.D. He is not happy.
( )13.How many body parts are mentioned(被提及) in the passage?
A. Three. B. Four. C. Five. D. Six.( )14.What can we infer from the passage?
A. We cannot communicate with others without words.
B. It's not polite to use body language in formal communication.
C. Body language can express more meanings than words do in
communication.
D. People in different countries have the same understanding of the same body
movement.
( )15.Which of the following can be the best title of the passage?
A. Arms can tell more than legs
