busy life, which was focused on raising three children and running a family business. But in 2014, everything
changed when her husband decided to join a charity (慈善) bike ride. Elaine decided to join him and took out an
old, rusty mountain bike from the shed. That first ride was 15 miles, and it was very hard. Elaine pushed her bike

Determined to improve, Elaine soon got a new road bike from her husband. On her first ride with it, she
struggled with the brakes (刹车) and nearly missed a junction (路口), but she was undeterred. Her confidence

学科网(北京)股份有限公司Mary-Jo Saunders goes to kindergarten every morning, just like many other five-year-olds in New York. Today,
she is learning a poem. What is special is that it is a Chinese poem and that she is able to recite it without an accent.
Soon she is going to learn Chinese handwriting too. “Learning the world’s most spoken language might give Mary-
Jo a head start in her future career,” says her mother Alison. “I think it’s good for her to stretch herself by listening
to and pronouncing new sounds, as well as learning to read and write Chinese characters.”
More and more ambitious parents in the world are signing their children up for Chinese classes. Keen for their
sons and daughters to succeed in life, they see being fluent in a second or third language as an advantage. Learning
Chinese is becoming such a global interest that the language has been included in the education systems of more than
75 countries. Over 4,000 overseas universities offer Chinese language courses and about 25 million people are
learning Chinese outside China.
It is easy to understand why Chinese is becoming so popular. Learning Chinese may help people get more job
opportunities. China is already a global economic power, and its influence is growing. For example, there is China’s
Belt and Road Initiative, which motivates many countries along the Silk Road to cooperate more closely. It has
created thousands of local jobs, many of which need people with a knowledge of Chinese. Another reason is that
studying Chinese provides access to wonderful Chinese history and culture. Adam Turner, a school head teacher in
the UK, cites this as one of the most appealing aspects of the recently added Chinese course. “Students love the
mystery of China,” he explains. “They want to know all about its traditions, dynasties and art forms. Learning Chinese
helps them see life from a new perspective and broaden their minds to the outside world.”
33. Why does Mary-Jo Saunders’s mother have her learn Chinese?
A. To give her an advantage in future work.
B. To make her a top student in kindergarten.
C. To support her to grow into a poetry expert.
D. To improve her handwriting skills in general.
34. How does the writer show the global trend of learning Chinese?
A. By listing numbers. B. By giving definitions.
C. By making comparison. D. By analyzing cause and effect.
35. What can be inferred from Adam Turner’s words?
A. Learning Chinese can ensure a promising future.
B Spreading Chinese language and culture is necessary.

“Who are you?” asked two men to a third person who had just interrupted their conversation onstage. “I am a
national treasure,” he replied with pride and a smile. “A ‘national treasure’'? You are.…Fu Bao, or Huahua?” they
responded uncertainly.
That drew a sound of laughing from the audience, for Fu Bao and Huahua are two famous giant pandas, whose
photos and videos have become an Internet hit.
The dialogue was even funnier because it was inserted (插入) into a play about ancient history titled Joyful
Songs in Flourishing Age, recently presented at the National Museum of China. The play’s creators said they added
in bits of contemporary culture to make it lively and get it across to today’s audiences. The primary inspiration for
the performance also was a figure of fun—an ancient pottery (陶器) statue of a comedian beating a drum. The 56-
centimeter-tall statue is characterized by his wide smile and a lively position—he holds a flat drum with one arm
and a drumstick in the opposite hand, and he raises a leg in a noticeable movement.
The museum’s purpose in hosting the play was to cooperate (合作) with other cultural and educational
institutions to bring old cultural objects to life. The show was meant to help more people learn not only about the
clay figure itself, but also about ancient Chinese art and culture. “The music and many other kinds of Baixi
performing arts have been put into the plot.”
Yang, a professor at the Communication University of China, says producing the play inspired great creativity
among her cooperators and the production was an exploratory effort of the museum to bring about the various
presentation of their collections. While they asked for help from researchers at the National Museum of China for
historical details, they also added elements of imagination and, especially, pop culture, such as rap and the giant
panda fever, to enrich the dialogue and singing and to help people relate to the show.
37. What does the underlined word “hit” in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A. Popular content. B. Digital attack.
C. Software update. D. Personal opinion.
38. What is the function of the dialogue in the play?

B. To arouse people’s awareness of protecting traditional culture.
C. To praise the creativity of other cultural and educational institutions.
D To combine various kinds of art to keep ancient art and culture alive.
.

Some believe that people are either smart or dumb. And if they are smart everything is easy for them.
,
____41____ But they can improve the skills they have and develop new ones. What’s your opinion?
In fact, this is related to one’s mindset (思维模式). Dr. Carol Dweck, a psychology professor at Stanford
University, has discovered that people with a fixed mindset solve problems in a much different way from those
with a growth mindset.
Dr. Dweck found people with a fixed mindset care about grades. When they make mistakes, they think it
means they’re not smart. ____42____ They’re afraid of challenges, because if they don’t do well, they may look
dumb. People with a growth mindset, on the other hand, care about learning, not grades. They learn from mistakes
by trying different ways to solve problems or asking for help.
____43____ They discovered that students with a growth mindset do better in math; those with a fixed
mindset do worse. Why? Kids with both mindsets do well in primary school, but middle school math is much
harder. So while the growth-mindset kids accept the challenge and work harder, the fixed-mindset kids may just
give up. ____44____
But Dweck’s team discovered something even more important than that. They found that, with some work,

学科网(北京)股份有限公司kids can choose to have a growth mindset and do better in school. Everyone has some of each type of mindset.
____45____ When you hear your fixed mindset voice telling you that you’re dumb, or that you’ll look stupid if you
ask for help, or that learning a new skill is hard, talk back to it! Then you really can get smarter by working hard,
practicing and challenging yourself!
A. As a result, their grades drop.
B. They also care about how smart they look.
C. Some hold the belief that not everyone can become a genius.
D. They are just like two kinds of voices in your head.
E. Dweck and her team did a research among middle school students.
