D. Read the passage and answer the following questions.
Is zoo life really bad for elephants? Are they really healthier when they walk around free?
People talk about these questions for years.
Now researchers (研究者)give scientific evidence (证据)that elephants who walk
around free are healthier and live together than those in zoos. This finding answers a lot of
questions about the health of elephants, and it might also bring about some changes in the world’s
zoos.
The Ros Club and a group of researchers studied the lifestyle of more than 4,500 elephants.
And they find the elephants in the zoo can get illness easily, so they say that being born into a
zoo, being moved between zoos, and the possible loss of their mothers, all put the animals at
special risk.
They made the study in a European zoo, and the elephants used in this study are from two
places, the Amboseli National Park in Kenya and the Myanma Timber Enterprise.
Until these animals’ problems can be solved, the researchers also call for an end to get
elephants from their native countries, and they say that the zoos should be strict in feeding
elephants. They should make sure there is no harm when they let people watch them.

E. Answer the questions
One day, as two little boys were walking along the road, they overlook a woman carrying a
large basket of apples.
The boys thought the woman looked very pale and tired; so they said,“Are you going to
town? If you are, we will carry your basket.”
“Thank you,”replied the woman,“you are very kind: you see I am weak and ill.”Then she told
them that she was a widow(寡妇),and had a lame(瘸腿的)son to support.
She lived in a cottage three miles away, and was now going to market to sell the apples which
grew on the only tree in her little garden. She wanted the money to pay her rent.
“We are going to the same way you are,”said the boys.“Let us have the basket.”and they took
hold of it, one on each side, and trudged along with merry hearts.
The poor widow looked glad, and said that she hoped their mother would not be angry with
them“.
“Oh, no,”they replied,“Our mother has taught us to be kind to everybody, and to be useful in
any way that we can.”
She then offered to give them a few of the ripest(熟透了的)apples for their trouble“.
No, thank you,”said they, “we do not want any pay for what we have done.”
When the widow got home, she told her lame son what had happened on the road, and they
were both made happier that day by the kindness of the two boys.
The other day, I saw a little girl stop and pick up a piece of orange peel, which she threw into
the gutter (沟)“ I wish the boys would not throw orange peel on the sidewalk (人行
道),”she said “Someone may tread upon it, and fall.”
“That is right, my dear,”I
said“.
It is a little thing for you to do what you have done, but it shows that you have a thoughtful
(考虑周密的)mind and a feeling(富有同情心的)heart.”
Perhaps some may say that these are little things. So they are: but we 77

D. Answer the questions (根据以下内容回答问题)
Tigers in Nepal seem to be taking night shifts in order to avoid their human neighbors, a study
has shown. The big cats generally move around at all times of the day and night, to monitor
territory, mate and hunt. But the study of tigers in Chitwan National Park -- where humans and
tigers walk the same paths -- showed a night shift in activity. The results challenge the traditional
wisdom.
It’s traditionally thought that tigers need lots of people-free space. This can lead to people
removing to make way for tigers. Tigers need resources, people need the same resources. If we
operate under the traditional wisdom that tigers only can survive with space devoted only for
them, there would always be conflict(冲突). If your priority is people, tigers lose out. If your
priority is tigers, people lose out.
Chitwan is home to about 121 tigers. People live on the park’s borders, but rely on the forests
for wood and grasses, venturing in on roads and narrow footpaths. Mr. Carter spent two seasons
setting motion-detecting camera traps for tigers, their prey (猎物)and people who walk the
roads and trails of Chitwan, both in and around the park. His analysis of the thousands of images
show that people and tigers are walking the same paths, yet at different times of the day. The
cameras documented a clear shift towards night activity in the tigers.
People generally avoid the forests at night, so dusk would seem to provide a signal for tigers
to come out and play. Mr. Carter said that conditions for tigers in Chitwan were good, with high
prey numbers, low levels of poaching (偷猎), and forests that are spreading outside the
boundaries of the park. But, he explained: “ People of different kinds, including tourists and local
residents, frequent the forests of Chitwan. Tigers need to use the same space as people if they are
to have an existent long-term future. What we’re learning in Chitwan is that tigers seem to be
adapting to make it work. We’ve found something very interesting is happening in Nepal that
holds promise for both humans and nature to thrive(繁荣).”

D. Answer the following questions.
An old carpenter was ready to retire. He told his employer (雇主)of his plans to leave
the house building business and live a more relaxing life with his wife and children. He would
miss the paycheck, but he needed to retire. They thought they could support themselves for the
rest of their life.
The employer was sorry to see his good worker go and asked if he could build just one
more house. The carpenter said yes, but in time it was easy to see that his heart was not in his
work. He turned to bad workmanship and used poor building materials.
It was an unlucky way to end his working life. When the carpenter finished his work and the
employer came to see the house, he handed the front door key to the carpenter. "This is your
house," he said, "my gift t There were about 15 kids there for audition when we arrivedo you."
What a shock! What a shame! If he had only known he was building his own house, he would
have done it al so differently. Now he had to live in the home he had built none too well.
So it is with us. We build our lives in a distracted (不专注的)way, willing to put up
less than the best. A important points we do not give the job our best effort. Then with a shock we
look at the situation we have created and find that we are now living in the house we have
built. If we had realized that, we would have done it differently.
It is the only life you will ever build. Even if you live it for only one day more, that day
deserves to lived with dignity(尊严).
The sentence on the wall reads“, Life is a do-it-yourself project.”Who could say it more
clearly? Your life today is the result of your attitudes and choices in the past. Your life tomorrow
will be the result of your attitudes and choices you make today.
