Text 1
W:When should we leave for the concert this evening?
M:I'll be off work at 5:30 pm.I can pick you up at 6 pm.
W:Can we make it to the concert?
M:Don't worry, there is still one hour left when we meet.
Text 2
M:Mia,what's your plan for this summer vacation?
W:I'll do some sightseeing in London.I was born there but moved to New York when I was five and then spent
seven years in Paris.I've never really had the chance to explore my birthplace.
M:It's worth visiting.
Text 3
W:Hey Nick,what do you think?
M:Not bad.The plot is attractive, but what really blows me away are the sound effects. They add so much
tension.The open ending is a bit confusing,though.
Text 4
W:How about some iced juice?
M:It's high in sugar.I'm trying to cut down on it.What about sports drinks?
W:They have the same problem, you know?
M:Then let's just have iced water. We can add some lemon slices to make it taste better.
Text 5
M:Did you watch the game last night?
W:Yeah, the final quarter was crazy.I thought our school team had it in the bag.
M:Me too.I never expected the opposing team to score two baskets in the last minute.
W:What a pity!
Text 6
M:Hello Alice,you finally picked up.
W:What's up,Tom?
M:I have run into some trouble.I need your help.
W:What happened?
M:Well, when I was preparing my presentation for tomorrow's English interview class, suddenly my computer broke
down.I failed to save my slides.
W:What a pity!What can I do for you?
M:Could you lend me your laptop?
W:Sure, I'll bring it to your dormitory right now.
M: Thank you so much.
Text 7
W:Hello,may I have your passport,please?
W:Yes,of course.
W:Do you have any bags to check in?
M:Yeah,just one.
W:Hmm…It appears that your bag is a bit too heavy;it is over our weight limit. Why not take something out?
M:Okay,I'll take out some books.
W:Great, now your bag is ready to be checked. Here's your boarding pass.
M:Okay,thank you.
Text 8
M:Hello Ms Torres, nice to meet you.I'm Tom Davis, manager of LCI Software.
W:Nice to meet you too,Mr Davis. Thanks for having me in today.
M:First, congratulations on your test results. You did really well. So,how did you learn about this position?
W:I saw your advertisement online and applied directly through your website.
M:Great, that's our main channel.Could you tell me a bit about yourself?
W:Sure.After graduation,I took a position in environmental engineering,but soon I realized that I wasn't suitable for
that job,so I decided to change my job.
M:Wow!That's a great shift, you're really brave. What made you decide on software specifically?
W:I enjoyed the data and computer systems more, which led me to explore information technology.
M:Got it.Well, thanks for your time today. We'll get in touch within a week.
W:Thanks,Mr Davis.
Text 9
M:Good news, our school is replacing printed textbooks with e-texts next term.
W:Really?What about the costs?
M:Well, the initial costs will be high, but much lower afterwards.Anyway, digital devices help our students learn
better.
W:Not necessarily.Digital devices may take away their attention. They might turn to apps, games, and websites.
M:But digital devices have many technological features compared with printed textbooks.Think about it:our
students can highlight and edit texts, write notes, and search for information much more quickly.
W:Actually, producing digital devices is environmentally destructive and dangerous to human health.
M:I take your point, but the software for electronic readers can be updated instantly, and there's no need to buy a lot
of new books. That's better for the environment.I'm looking forward to the change.
W:I'll stick with my printed books.
Text 10
Welcome to today's program. If you think only young people attend classes, write essays, and take exams, you might
have a thing or two to learn. In Australia, more than 50%of adults aged 25 to 65 are currently receiving education. In
France, nearly half of 25-to 64-year-olds take part in education or training. While in Sweden, around 75%of adults
receive education.Online learning makes returning to school easier after retirement. So why is there such interest in
continuing education?Older learners want to gain qualifications they missed out on in their younger years. While
younger adults want to improve their employment prospects;only a few do it just to prove they can.Today we are
honored to invite five older students who have returned to school.Let's give them a warm welcome.
