Twenty-ninth National Hypertension Day in China

October 8 is the 29th National Hypertension Day in China. This year's theme is “Control Your Blood Pressure and Blood Sugar.” Doctors hope the day will remind more people, especially the young, to watch their health.

High blood pressure is called a “silent killer” because it usually comes without clear signs. Many patients feel nothing, yet their blood vessels are damaged day after day. It is a leading cause of heart attacks and strokes. In China, over 300 million adults live with it.

Doctors say healthy habits are the best protection. People should eat no more than 5 grams of salt a day, and exercise five times a week. Blood pressure should be checked at least once a year; people with a family history may need a test every six months. If medicine brings your pressure down, you are not cured, so never stop it by yourself.

国内航班燃油附加费上调

Higher Fuel Surcharge for Domestic Flights

Starting from October 10, passengers flying inside China will pay a higher fuel surcharge. For each flight of 800 kilometres or less, an adult passenger now pays 50 yuan; for a longer flight, the fee is 90 yuan. Compared with the old standard, that is 10 yuan and 20 yuan more.

The surcharge is decided by oil prices. It dropped to 10 and 20 yuan on January 5 this year, but heavy oil costs pushed it up to 60 and 120 yuan in April and to 90 and 170 yuan in May, the highest level of the year. From June to August it went down three times in a row and reached 40 and 70 yuan.

Babies do not pay the fee at all, and children pay only half. Because the week-long National Day holiday has just ended, ticket prices are at their lowest, so this small rise may not worry most travellers.

On October 8, the men's doubles quarter-finals were held at the WTT China Smash in Beijing. The Chinese pair Wen Ruibo and Yuan Licen, the third seeds, beat a Singapore pair 3:0, with the scores 11:8, 11:8 and 11:7, and reached the semi-finals.

It was not a good day for every Chinese team. Liang Jingkun and Xiang Peng lost 0:3 to the Indian second seeds. Because China's mixed doubles pairs had already gone out one day earlier, Wen and Yuan are now the only Chinese pair left in the men's doubles.

In the semi-finals they will face the world's top pair, the Lebrun brothers of France, who beat a Hong Kong pair 3:1. Yuan said the two teams know each other well now, so he and his partner will “fight for every single point”.
