Dear Jim,
I was truly delighted to hear from you, in which you expressed sincere interest in the social practice activity we participated in during the winter vacation. It is my great pleasure to elaborate on the details of this meaningful experience and share the profound insights I gained from it.
Organized by our school’s Student Union, the activity centered on caring for the elderly in a nearby community and lasted for a whole week. Every morning, we gathered at the school gate and headed to the community as a group. Not only did we help the elderly with daily chores such as cleaning their rooms, doing laundry and preparing nutritious meals, but we also devoted much time to accompanying them sincerely. Some elderly residents shared their life stories full of struggles and perseverance in the past, while others poured out their loneliness and troubles in daily life. What impressed me most was that an 82-year-old grandma, who used to be a paper-cut artist, taught us the delicate skills of making traditional Chinese paper-cuts, which carry the essence of our traditional culture. In the afternoons, besides holding a small but warm performance for them with classic folk songs and simple folk dances, we focused on helping the elderly learn to use smartphones. We patiently taught them how to make video calls with their children, browse news, send WeChat messages and even use online payment, which helped them break the sense of isolation and keep pace with the times. This activity was highly recognized and praised by the community residents, and their warm smiles and sincere thanks deeply touched our hearts.
As for my personal gains, I learned far more than just the skills of caring for the elderly. It is through this activity that I truly realize how important it is to show kindness, respect and companionship to the elderly. They have made indelible contributions to the development of our society in their prime, and now in their old age, they are more in need of care and emotional comfort rather than just material support.
