Text 1

W: Have you signed up for Talk in China, Mike?

M: Yes, I have. I did it yesterday afternoon.

W: I’m going to sign up tomorrow morning. Let’s compete against each other in the speech contest then.

Text 2

W: Have you received the notice on your mobile phone?

M: What notice? I don’t know.

W: A heavy storm hit our island last week. The notice warned us that a hurricane is about to strike the island in three days. All the residents must leave before it arrives.

Text 3

W: How do you like your new mobile phone, Tom?

M: I love it! You got it for me as my 18th birthday gift, and you got Mike a laptop last month. You are the best mum ever!

Text 4

M: The meal cost 90 dollars originally. You’ve offered a 10% discount, so it costs 81 dollars in total, right?

W: That’s right, sir.

M: Here is a hundred-dollar bill. Keep the change as your tip.

Text 5

W: I called you at half past twelve this noon. Why didn’t you answer?

M: This noon? Oh, I powered off my mobile since I usually take a nap at noon every day.

W: Oh, that’s why I couldn’t get through.

Text 6

M: Becky, having worked with you for 8 years, I never knew you had such a lovely voice. You really can sing, can’t you?

W: Thanks, Mark. I used to be a member of the school choir 10 years ago.

M: No wonder you can control your voice so well. You’re a professional singer.

W: Well, I wouldn’t say I’m a professional, but I did receive some training for 2 years at school. My music teacher, Maggie, used to be a professional singer.

M: Well, a good teacher makes good students.

W: You’re quite right.

Text 7

M: Wow, this dance is surely cool. There are so many people here. . . uh . . . what’s your name?

W: Susan. Susan Dawes. You really don’t know who I am? You sit behind me in geography class.

M: Oh, right! I guess I’m just used to seeing the back of your head, not your face.

W: Are you OK? You’re so nervous.

M: I’m sorry for my strange behavior. I don’t know why I acted like I didn’t know you. I just didn’t know how to start the conversation.

W: That’s OK. It’s refreshing to talk to somebody who is actually honest for once. So, do you like this music?

M: Not really. I prefer rock and roll mostly, but I like listening to blues when I'm alone. Anything but this pop stuff.

W: Oh, my gosh, I totally agree! I thought I was the only one who felt that way!

M: But we’re already here. So could I invite you to have a dance now?

W: Sure.

Text 8

M: Honey, we will have three days off work. Do you have any ideas for our vacation?

W: I want to visit the nature park in the neighboring city. My colleagues said the lake scenery there is very beautiful. And we can see a lot of birds at this season.

M: Sounds great! Visiting a nature park is a wonderful way to connect with nature and appreciate the beauty of the environment. I’m looking forward to it.

W: And Tommy will enjoy the trip, for he can look for insects for his insect club.

M: It seems that the trip can do him a favor. Then will we drive there?

W: It will take us six hours. That's too long. The train takes half the time of a car drive.

M: I prefer a faster ride, of course.

Text 9

W: Tim, I heard besides English, you can also speak French, Chinese, Italian, Spanish and German.

M: Well, I speak all of those languages except the last one. But it’s the language I’ll learn next.

W: Since you have rich experience in language learning, can I ask you a question?

M: Sure.

W: Is it possible to learn more than one language at a time?

M: Yes, it’s possible, but it’s not advisable, especially for an adult learner.

W: Why?

M: If you have a lot of time, learning two languages well at the same time is possible. But if you don’t, you may end up learning neither of the languages well. Besides, there’s another problem.

W: What is it?

M: If you attempt to learn similar languages at the same time, you may have difficulty separating them in your memory. For example, I found myself pronouncing Spanish words in French. So are you planning to learn a new language?

W: Yes. Some of my students are from Asian countries. I want to communicate better with them.

Text 10

W: Good morning, everyone. I’m here today to tell you about Toys for Tots’ new initiative called “School Is Out—Play Is In” to support children in need over the summer months. As we all know, summer can be a difficult time for disadvantaged kids, with food safety problems and lack of access to educational activities. That’s why Toys for Tots is now providing educational toys, books, games and other gifts through distribution events with our partners for children across the US. Our goal is to help bridge the gap in summer learning loss and provide children with a valuable time filled with fun and learning opportunities. With rising costs putting strain on so many families, small acts of kindness like donating to Toys for Tots can make a big difference to a child. Whether it’s 5 dollars or 50 dollars, every contribution will go directly to putting educational tools in the hands of children who need our help. Together, through “School Is Out—Play Is In”, I’m confident we can ensure all kids enjoy a summer of growth and exploration. Thank you!
