Norwegian playwright and author Jon Fosse has just been awarded the 2023 Nobel
Prize in Literature for his "innovative plays and prose which give voice to the unsayable".
The Swedish Academy credits Fosse as "one of the most widely performed playwrights
in the world", although the 64-year-old originally made his name as a novelist, beginning
with Red, Black in 1983. He has since written many works of prose and poetry. "His liter-
ary works, spanning a variety of genres(体裁), comprises about 40 plays and a wealth of
novels, poetry collections, essays, children's books and translations, said Anders Olsson,
chairman of the Nobel Committee for Literature.
Jon Fosse draws inspiration from his rural living environment and personal struggles,
which have deeply influenced his distinctive writing style. Growing up in a small coastal
village, Fosse was immersed in the beauty of nature and the vastness of the sea, which
filled him with a sense of solitude and introspection(内省) that is reflected in his works.
Fosse's writing discussed themes of desolateness(孤独,苍凉), longing, and the search
学科网(北京)股份有限公司for meaning in life. Additionally, his battles with depression have enabled him to explore
the depths of human emotions and existential despair.
"He touches you so deeply when you read his works," said Anders Olsson. “What is
special about him is the closeness in his writing. It touches your deepest feelings-anxieties,
insecurities, questions of life and death-which are things that every human being actually
faces from the very beginning. In that sense I think he reaches very far and there is a sort
of a universal impact of everything that he writes-it has appeal to this basic humanity."
Fosse is the first-ever laureate writing in Nynorsk, one of the two official languages of
Norwegian, but only used by just 10% of the population. As The Guardian writes, "Many
Nynorsk speakers see Fosse 'as a kind of national hero' for his championing of the lan-
guage." Fosse's recognition on a global stage promotes the visibility and importance of
Nynorsk as a written standard. It will attract more attention to Nynorsk literature, inspire and
encourage Nynorsk speakers to continue preserving and promoting their linguistic(语言的)
heritage.

Researchers at CU Boulder have developed a wearable device that changes the human
body into a biological battery. The device is stretchy(弹性的) enough that you can wear
it like a ring, sport band or any other thing that touches your skin. It also taps into a per-
son's natural heat-employing thermoelectric generators to change the body's internal tempera-
ture into electricity. "In the future, we want to be able to power your wearable electronics
without having to include a battery, said Jianliang Xiao, an associate professor at CU Boul-
der.
The concept may sound like something out of The Matrix film series, in which a race
of robots have enslaved humans to harvest their precious organic energy. Xiao and his col-
leagues aren't that ambitious: Their devices can generate about 1 volt(伏特) of energy for
every square centimeter of skin space-less volt per area than what most existing batteries
provide but still enough to power electronics like watches or fitness trackers.
Scientists have previously experimented with similar wearable devices, but Xiao's is
stretchy, can heal itself when damaged and is fully recyclable-making it a cleaner alterna-
tive to traditional electronics. “Whenever you use a battery, you're depleting(消耗) that
battery and will, eventually, need to replace it, Xiao said. "The nice thing about our device is
that you can wear it, and it provides you with constant power."
Just pretend that you're out for a jog. As you exercise, your body heats up, and that
heat will radiate out to the cool air around you. Xiao's device captures that flow of energy
rather than let it go to waste. "The thermoelectric generators are in close contact with the
human body, and they can use the heat that would normally be sent into the environment,"
Xiao said.
28. What does Xiao expect of his device at present?
A. It will be used for medical purposes.
B. It will be made smaller and wearable.
学科网(北京)股份有限公司C. It will change natural power into electricity.
D. It will supply constant power to wearable devices.
29. Why does the author mention The Matrix series in the text?
A. To explain the principle.
B. To make a comparison.
C. To introduce a topic.
D. To analyze the cause.
30. What does the third paragraph mainly talk about?
A. The strengths of Xiao's device.
B. The convenience of using a battery.
C. The replacement of wearable devices.
D. The development of traditional electronics.
31. What do we know about Xiao's device from the text?
A. It operates with plenty of power.
B. It is designed for practical use.
C. It benefits people's health in a way.
D. It's based on traditional electronics.

Swot satellite is scheduled to be launched Thursday morning to conduct a comprehen-
sive survey of Earth's vita l resource . By using advanced microwave radar technology, it will
collect height-surface measurements of oceans, lakes and rivers in high-definition detail over
90% of the globe. It's really the first time to observe nearly all water on the planet's sur-
face.
Oceans are estimated to have absorbed more than 90% of the extra heat trapped in the
Earth's atmosphere by human-caused greenhouse gases. Therefore Swot is mainly set to ex-
plore how oceans absorb atmospheric heat and CO2 in a natural process that adjusts cli-
mate change. It will scan the seas and precisely measure fine differences in surface eleva-
tions(高度) around smaller currents and eddies(漩涡), where much of the oceans'
decrease of heat and carbon is believed to occur. "Studying the mechanism will help cli-
学科网(北京)股份有限公司mate scientists answer a key question: What is the turning point at which oceans start re-
leasing, rather than absorbing, huge amounts of heat back into the atmosphere and speed up
global warming, rather than limiting it, said Nadya Shiffer, Swot's program scientist.
By comparison, earlier studies of water bodies relied on data of rivers or oceans taken
at specific points, or from satellites that can only track measurements along a one-dimen-
sional line, requiring scientists to fill in data gaps through extrapolation(外推法). Thanks to
the radar instrument, Swot can scan through cloud cover and darkness over wide ranges of
the Earth. This enables scientists to accurately map their observations in two dimensions
regardless of weather or time of day and to cover large geographic areas far more quickly
than was previously possible.
"Rather than giving us a line of elevations, it's giving us a map of elevations, and
that's just a total game changer, "said Tamlin Pavelsky, Swot freshwater science leader.
32. What do the underlined words "vital resource" in the first paragraph refer to?
A. Technology.
B. Climate.
C. Oceans.
D. Water.
33. What is the major mission of Swot satellite?
A. To explore where oceans absorb heat and CO2.
B. To explain why greenhouse gas comes into being.
C. To identify when global warming is worsened.
D. To study how oceans influence climate change.
34. What makes it possible for Swot to measure precisely?
A. The high-definition computer.
B. Advanced radar technology.
C. The three-dimensional image.
D. An accurate map of elevations.
35. Which is the most suitable title for the text?
A. First Global Water Survey from Space
B. Successful Launch of Swot Satellite
学科网(北京)股份有限公司C. A Breakthrough in Space Travel
D. A Solution to Climate Change

and get good grades. Players on a sports team may feel driven to play harder in order to
help the team win.

portant decisions, simply going with an instinct is risky. Instead, people should seriously
consider why they feel drawn to taking a particular action. __40__

Joey sat at the kitchen table, reading the sports page of the morning paper. He heard
his grandfather coming down the stairs. When his grandfather came into the kitchen, Joey
could see he wasn't his usual happy self.
"Morning, Grandfather," he said. His grandfather sat across the table and didn't pick up
the paper to read. Instead, he asked, "Joey, is anything happening in town today?"
"There's a ball game between Doraville Middle School and my school tonight, "Joey
told him. "It'll be a close race, but I think we'll win. Would you like to go?"
Joey felt bad for his grandfather. He knew he couldn't read. His grandfather had told
him often, "I didn't have the chance to go to school regularly. Looking after the animals
and tending to the crops on the farm were much more important in those days than learn-
ing to read."
One day, Joey stopped at the library to look through some books. He saw a sign on
the library wall. It read: "Do you know somebody who doesn't read? We can help. Just
call this number."Joey hurried home and showed the sign to his grangfather. "Somebody can
teach you how to read. It says so right here,"Joey explained. Joey jotted the number down.
Several days later, Grandfather put on his best suit of clothes for his first day of
school. He arrived at the library an hour early and met with his teacher. During that first
class, he was so worried and nervous that he couldn't concentrate. He couldn't remember
anything the teacher said. A few weeks later, Grandfather was studying when he looked up
