(23-24高二上·四川乐山·期末)How to Make New Year’s Resolutions
Do you make resolutions in the new year? 1 However, you will give yourself your best shot at
success if your resolutions are SMART (specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and time-bound).
Specific. Your resolutions should be absolutely clear. Making a specific goal is really important rather than
just roughly saying “I want to lose weight.” How much weight do you want to lose and how long will it last? 2
Measurable. Establish standards for measuring progress toward the achievement of each goal you set. If, for
example, you want to learn a foreign language, memorize 20 words or practise speaking it for 30 minutes every
day. 3
Achievable. This doesn’t mean that you can’t have big goals. 4 Saving enough money to retire in
five years when you are 30 years old is unlikely to achieve, but saving an extra $100 a month is accessible.
Realistic. 5 Are you willing to devote time and energy to it? You truly know that it can be
accomplished with your abilities and resources available to you. When you identify the goals, you begin to figure out
ways that you make them come true.
Time-bound. The timeline toward reaching your goals should be clear and realistic. That means having enough
time to do them with lots of smaller goals set up along the way. Focus on these small achievements, and you can
make gradual progress.
A.Does this goal really matter to you?
B.You can make plans to achieve them.
C.They are more easily made than achieved.
D.The following tips can help achieve your resolutions.
E.But trying to take too big a step too fast can make you disappointed.
F.Five pounds in the next two months—that’s going to be more effective.
G.Recording progress into a journal or making notes in an App can encourage your perseverance.

water on earth is in the ocean. The salt in the ocean water makes it unusable for drinking. Another two percent is
frozen in the ice caps and glaciers on the Earth. 1 There are many factors that affect the amount of water
学学科科网网((北北京京))股股份份有有限限公公司司available for you. Where you live, the amount of rain that falls, and how water is collected and reserved all affect the
amount of cool, clear water available.
One factor that we can’t change is where it will rain. The amount of rain an area receives affects the amount
of water available for use. Some major cities are located in areas where they can get water from the ground. 2
Those places with no water readily available must pipe water in from far away.
According to a study done by the state of California, the average person uses over one hundred gallons of
water per day. Water is used for drinking, taking a shower or bath, brushing teeth, washing hands, cleaning dishes,
doing laundry, and flushing toilets. 3
No matter where you live, there are many ways you can help conserve water. Today, we have many helpful
tools to help us save water. There are low-flow shower heads and faucets(水龙头), dishwashers and washing machines
that use up to 50% less water. 4
There are many other ways you can help. 5 Take a shower rather than a bath. It’s also important to fix
leaky faucets. If you find one, let your parents know. A good way to have cool water available all the time is to keep a
pitcher in the fridge. This way you won’t have to wait for the water in the pipes to bring you colder water to drink.
Only run your clothes washer and dishwasher when they are full. This can save hundreds of gallons of water a year.
All of these will help to conserve water. Leaning to use it wisely will ensure that it will always be available.
So, make a fuss and conserve water. It’s worth it!
A.Using water wisely is important.
B.Water is an important natural resource.
C.Don’t leave the water running when you brush your teeth.
D.Other areas use surface water from lakes, rivers, or streams.
E.This leaves one percent of the water on Earth available for us to use.
F.Installing these items in your home is the first line of defense against wasting water.
G.Wherever we live, we must be careful with the polluted water we have in our part of the world.
(23-24高二上·福建莆田·期末)Walking has been considered as one kind of rewarding exercise. For many
people, daily walking offers massive and long-term physical and mental benefits. 1 A Stanford University
study found that participants were more creative when walking as opposed to sitting.
2 You’ve probably heard the phrase “exercise your creativity”. Our creative mindset is stirred up by
physical movement, which is exactly why walking with your dog, a friend, or alone feeds creative thinking.
But the scenery is almost as important as the sweat. Just by going outside, you are stepping out of your habitual
学学科科网网((北北京京))股股份份有有限限公公司司surroundings and your comfort zone, which is necessary if you want to open your mind to new possibilities. You can
walk through a tree-filled neighborhood. 3 Even when you walk down a busy street, you can’t help but
get distracted by the sweet smells from a food cart or the child pointing to a building you haven’t even noticed
before.
Walking outside develops our ability to collect new ideas and take in new sights, sounds, smells, and flavors.
Shinrin-yoku, a common form of relaxation in Japan, suggests that being in the forest and walking among the trees
there can lower your stress levels. 4 Research has shown that
getting close to nature around your neighborhood or taking a break from multimedia increases performance on a
creative problem-solving task.
So instead of setting a fitness goal, why not set a creativity goal that starts with walking outdoors? 5
For example, you can turn off your phone and give yourself the chance to be present in the world, to hear conversations
and natural sounds, and to notice the way people move and the way the sun reflects in a lake.
Walk not just for exercise. Walk for wonder.
A.Unfortunately, you often fail to do it.
B.Expose yourself more to your surroundings.
C.The movement during walking is obviously key.
D.Without enough energy, you cannot wonder or create.
E.But to receive the benefits, you do not have to live in a forest.
F.This habit, however, not only benefits well-being but also contributes to innovation.
G.Wandering around a park and observing people relaxing or birds singing is also a choice.
(23-24高二上·新疆乌鲁木齐·期末)It is natural for us teenagers to feel upset. 1 Here I am
offering some useful suggestions.
•Move your body.
2 Have you ever noticed that you feel happier and have a sense of achievement after a good workout?
That’s because working out creates endorphins — body chemicals that make us feel happy. No matter how low you
are feeling, your mood will get a well-deserved boost (改善) after a workout. Exercise also helps you keep your heart
in shape, makes you stronger and helps you stay at a healthy weight. And exercise is totally fun — and it’s great for
your self-esteem, too.
•Talk about it.
3 Friends’ ears can be a great source of support since you’re all in the same boat. And don’t forget
学学科科网网((北北京京))股股份份有有限限公公司司your mom — she was once a teenager as well and may understand more than you realize. Even talking to your pet
can help — just saying things out loud can help you see things differently and calm you down.
•Laugh a lot.
Humour can rescue you from an upset moment or make you feel better when you’re in an unpleasant mood.
No matter what’s going on, the ability to laugh at yourself and your situation is really important. 4 It’s
true! Using your smile muscles tells your brain to make more endorphins and that boosts your mood.
•Cry — it’s okay!
Sometimes the only way to get out of your feelings is to cry — so go ahead! Shut yourself in your room and
cry your eyes out! No one says you have to be happy all the time. 5
A.Why not pack up your suitcase and take a trip?
B.We can’t say enough good things about exercise.
C.But still we should find ways to manage our feelings.
D.So smile at whatever is happening and choose to be happy.
E.And do you know just smiling can help better your mood?
F.When you are done, you’ll be ready to face the world again.
G.Don’t hold in all those feelings until you are ready to explode.
(23-24高二上·浙江绍兴·期末)Body language, important language
Have you ever noticed the big difference between someone’s behavior and his words? Or have you ever failed
to control your body on certain occasions as a result of nervousness? Today let’s discuss how essential body language
can be in our daily communication.
Studies have revealed that in the process of communication, non-verbal expression has 65% to 93% more
influence than actual text. 1
Emilie Suter, a senior student of EHL, believes that the significance of body language is reflected in the ability
to help people in the process of communication. 2 Body language is the best explanation of the behavior
psychology of individuals and groups.
3 Without proper body language, you may find yourself trapped in a circle where you cannot
integrate with the external environment. Therefore, you should always pay attention to how people around you use
body language to express their opinions—this allows you to accurately determine your next move.
Fidgeting (坐立不安) may mean that there is a lack of interaction between the two sides of the conversation.
4 Loich Batumba, vice president of the student council of EHL, says that he clearly remembers similar
学学科科网网((北北京京))股股份份有有限限公公司司experiences: “At the time of my first interview, my interviewer and I barely communicated eye-to-eye, so I could
clearly feel that there was a lack of interest between our conversations.”
How to establish a good personal impression is a topic that people have repeatedly discussed. 5 This
has increased the importance of physical actions for us.
A.Body language varies from culture to culture.
B.Of course, some body language is shared universally.
C.In real situations, body language matters a lot more than you think!
D.This means that “how to say” is more significant than “what to say”.
E.Turning to other directions can mean he or she does not share your opinion.
F.It helps people better understand the overall situation and thus make adjustments.
G.Interestingly, what we see is actually the most important standard for us to judge others.
(23-24高二上·贵州毕节·期末)Use Body Language to Build Trust
Body language can help people see you as more trustworthy, resulting in stronger relationships at home, work
and school. Although some gestures vary across cultures, there’re certain basic body language gestures.
Keep eye contact when someone is talking. 1 So put your phone down and listen with your eyes.
Building stronger human ties makes it easier to trust people and know more about them.
Uncross your arms and legs. 2 However, that will close you off. You’re unknowingly communicating
something negative because you’ve positioned your body in a way that blocks any basis for building trust. 3
Thus, you’ll look more open to hearing others’ thoughts.
4 Sitting behind a desk creates another obstacle that could make the person you’re talking to put his
or her own walls up. According to Professor Carla Chamberlin-Quinlisk, sitting at a table with her students encourages
them to be more vocal during class. So try the smart way to get your boss to trust you.
Limit your own note taking. Sometimes notes are necessary when you’re talking to a coworker, but make sure
all that doesn’t get in the way of your eye contact. If you’re constantly writing down what the other person says, that
person could start feeling self-conscious. What’s more, taking notes makes the other person feel uncomfortable. 5
A.Don’t sit behind a desk.
B.Make sure your body looks open.
C.Nod and smile while someone is talking.
D.You might only be crossing your arms and legs because you’re cold.
E.It will help build trust because it shows real interest.
学学科科网网((北北京京))股股份份有有限限公公司司F.And they may question like “Why are they writing that down?”
G.Unfortunately, most people have no training on how to read body language.
(23-24高二上·山东日照·期末)With food costs rising, many people are considering starting a garden. This
makes sense. Humans have been growing their own food for centuries. And gardening is truly helpful. It improves
the look of your home. 1 Besides, it can save money.
At first thought, this might seem like an obvious win: Once you get a tomato plant going, for example, you get
free tomatoes without having to always buy them. 2 And not all that you plant are the same in terms of
cost-effectiveness. Can you really save money by growing your own food? The answer is yes, but you should carefully
think about it.
Firstly, do some math. 3 The money goes towards water, tools, and so on. According to a study, in
America, most home gardens require just about $70 in the beginning. And you can expect a yearly return of about
$600. Those are good numbers. But keep in mind that there are continual costs after your plants are planted. 4
Besides, during their growth, some of your plants will die off due to weather, animals, etc. These can affect your
garden’s return to you.
5 Some plants are more cost effective than others. But there’s no point in planting a high-return plant if
you won’t eat it. When you’re planning your garden, choose fruits and vegetables you enjoy and will actually eat.
After all, to save money through gardening, you’ll need to eat what it produces.
A.Slowly, the costs will rise.
B.It provides delicious foods.
C.But gardens have hidden costs.
D.In this way, your tomatoes can be tastier.
E.Another consideration is what you plant.
F.The starting point is your cost in the beginning.
G.G For example, you’ll buy something to keep the plants growing.
(23-24高二上·湖北武汉·期末)When faced with change, most people go down one of two roads: They either
respond or react. 1 Reacting, on the other hand, literally means to meet one action with another. It’s instant.
Responding creates more space between an event and what you do about it. In that space, you give immediate
emotions room to breathe and you gain a better understanding of what is happening. Consequently, you rarely regret
responding. 2
学学科科网网((北北京京))股股份份有有限限公公司司There is plenty you can do internally to cultivate responsiveness. For instance, “affect labeling”, or naming your
emotions, helps create space between you and a difficult situation. Meditation (冥想) is also beneficial. 3 You
can do all the affect labeling and meditation in the world. Yet if you regularly inhabit reactive environments, it’s hard
not to become more reactive.
4 When I spend too much time on social media, I’m more likely to roar at my children, feel restless,
and my competence in thinking deeply worsens significantly. Yet I’m becoming increasingly concerned that it’s not
just me, but our entire culture that is making us more reactive at a time when we need our humanity more than ever.
5 But distinctly naming the problem is an important first step. We can also reduce reactivity by
intentionally creating more responsive environments. We can read print books instead of digital versions. We can go
to the gym or take walks without phones. If we desire to navigate our challenging times, we must find ways to
preserve the space between stimulus (刺激) and response, which is to say we must find ways to preserve our
humanity.
A.But the external matters too.
B.But you often regret reacting.
C.I’ve experienced this firsthand.
D.There are no silver bullet solutions.
E.I have figured out how to deal with this.
F.On the one hand, reacting is crucial for our humanity.
G.Responding, related to responsibility, is considerate.
(23-24 高二上·浙江嘉兴·期末)As humans, we’re meant to be social creatures. In fact, being socially
connected is key to our mental and emotional health. 1 This can cause us to cut ourselves off from others
and gradually become lonely. Social situations can seem frightening, but the truth is never quite so black-and-white.
People aren’t thinking about you—at least not to the degree that you think. 2 Just like you’re thinking
about yourself, other people are thinking about themselves. They’re not spending their free time judging you, so stop
wasting time worrying about what others think of you.
3 When you’re socially anxious, it can seem as though everyone else is fully confident. But that’s not
the case. There are still many shy people out there struggling with the same self-doubts as you are. The next person
you speak to is just as likely to be worried about what you think of them!
学学科科网网((北北京京))股股份份有有限限公公司司You don’t have to be perfect to be liked. In fact, our imperfections can be pleasant. 4 If you can
cheerfully accept your awkwardness and imperfections, you’ll likely find that others will, too. They may even like
you better for it!
It’s okay to make mistakes. Everyone makes mistakes; it’s part of being human. 5 Your value doesn’t
come from being perfect. If you find self-forgiveness difficult, try to look at your own mistakes as you would those
of a friend.
Overcoming social fear requires practice. Don’t expect to become socially comfortable without putting in the
time. That said, you can start small. Take baby steps towards being more confident and social, and then build on those
successes.
A.So give yourself a break when you mess up.
B.Most people are caught up in their own lives.
C.The good news is that you can learn from them.
D.People are much more confident than you think.
E.Even our weaknesses can bring us closer to others.
F.Many other people feel just as awkward and nervous as you do.
G.Yet many of us are shy and feel awkward around unfamiliar people.
(23-24高二上·内蒙古·期末)Increasing your reading speed is a journey that combines technique, practice,
and a patient mindset. By following these strategies, you’ll improve your reading speed.
Active reading
Active reading involves engaging with the material rather than passively absorbing words. Techniques such as
underlining key phrases, quickly taking down notes in the margin (页边空白) and asking questions about the content
can significantly enhance your reading speed. 1 .
Expand your peripheral vision (周边视觉)
A substantial portion of reading involves the movement of your eyes across lines of text. By expanding your
peripheral vision, you can take in more words with each glance. Practice widening your focus to capture groups of
words rather than focusing on one word at a time. 2 .
Get rid of subvocalisation (默读)
Subvocalisation, or the habit of pronouncing each word in your head as you read, can be a major obstruction to
reading speed. Subvocalisation is a natural part of early reading development. 3 . Train your mind to get
rid of this inner voice by consciously focusing on visualising concepts and ideas rather than saying each word
学学科科网网((北北京京))股股份份有有限限公公司司internally. This change can lead to a fast reading experience.
4
Like any skill, increasing your reading speed requires consistent practice. Mix up your reading materials to
expose yourself to various writing styles and subjects. Whether it’s fiction, non-fiction, academic articles or industry
reports, diversifying your reading content enhances your adaptability and speed in processing different types of
information.
5 . Gradually increase the complexity and length of the material, challenging your brain to read faster
while maintaining comprehension. This intentional and varied practice is key to training your newfound speed-
reading skills.
A.Practice regularly
B.Efficient reading
C.However, it can delay progress as you strive to read faster
D.Set aside dedicated time each day for focused reading practice
E.These actions force your brain to get information more efficiently
F.This adjustment can lead to a significant increase in reading speed
G.This allows your brain to process information without the inner voice
(23-24高二上·安徽·期末)Overcoming Fear of Failure
Have you ever been so afraid of failing at something that you decided not to try at all? Or has fear of failure
meant that, subconsciously, you undermined (削弱) your own efforts to avoid the possibility of a larger failure? 1
It’s important to realize that in everything we do, there’s always a chance that we’ll fail. Facing that chance and
embracing it give us a more rewarding life. Here are a few ways to reduce the fear of failing.
Analyze all potential outcomes. 2 Remove that fear by considering all of the potential outcomes of your
decision. You can map possible outcomes visually.
Set small goals. Imagining how life will be after you’ve reached your goal is a great motivator to keep you
moving forward. So start by setting a few small goals. 3 Don’t focus on the end picture. Just focus on the next
step. Taking one small step at a time will help build your confidence, keep you moving towards your final goal.
Learn to think more positively. Every coin has two sides. 4 Learn to change your thoughts and focus
more on the bright side of the situation, making you like yourself. Positive thinking is an incredibly powerful way to
build self-confidence.
5 In some cases, the toughest situation may be genuinely disastrous (灾难性的) and it may be
学学科科网网((北北京京))股股份份有有限限公公司司perfectly reasonable to fear failure. In other cases, however, this worst case may actually not be that bad, and
recognizing this can help.
A.Look at the worse-case situation.
B.It is up to you to decide which one to look at.
C.Failing at something can help you discover your truest friends.
D.Many of us have probably experienced this at one time or another.
E.If you are afraid of failure, you might be uncomfortable setting goals.
F.These should be goals that are slightly, but not overwhelmingly, challenging.
G.Many people experience fear of failure because they fear the unknown.
(23-24高二上·四川南充·期末)Tips on Learning Math
While you are sitting in a math class listening to your teacher multiplying (乘以) and adding endless numbers,
math can become boring and uninteresting quickly. 1 . Here are some tips that can help you.
Learn math tricks. There are many tricks in math that save you enormous time. For example, adding up all the
numbers from 1 to 100 is a lot of work. But, check out this easy way to do it: 100+1=101 and 99+2=101, right? So
does 98+3, 97+4, 96+5, etc. So, if you multiply 101 by the number of these pairs, you’ll get the sum of all the numbers
from 1 to 100, which is 5050. 2 .
Make math easy. Math can be difficult to learn because students are often taught to learn math by memorizing
formulas (公式). However, by learning math this way, students aren’t taught the principles and concepts. But the
principles and concepts are needed to understand why a particular formula is being used. 3 . You can ask
your teacher why and how a particular formula works, while others do not.
4 . For example, if you’re interested in historical landmarks, learn about the math involved in building
these landmarks.
Connect math to everyday life. 5 . For example, if you have an alarm clock, chances are that you will
figure out how many extra minutes you can sleep before you get out of bed once you hit the snooze button (贪睡按
钮). Try to notice the different ways you do math in your day-to-day tasks.
A.They are often interesting, too
B.So make math easier by learning them
C.Make math fun by using it in the real world
D.Try solving some math competition problems
E.Explore how math is related to something that you love
学学科科网网((北北京京))股股份份有有限限公公司司F.By doing so, you can find a way out of doing extra work
G.However, you can beat the boredom by making math meaningful to you
(23-24 高二上·广西·期末)Exams are an important type of assessment almost all students will need to
undertake. The best way to study is not to recite (背诵) it all in hours or minutes before an exam. 1 It is
important to manage this stress and find ways of helping to reduce it.
How do you face such an important day? If you have not been able to study the complete contents till now, don’t
long to finish it all. Firstly, prepare a test kit for the duration of your examination. In your bag, collect all your supplies
such as pencils, several pens and other important writing materials. Put the bag and everything else that you might
need in one place. 2
When you arrive at the hall, surround yourself with friends who are supportive or just go through your notes
quietly. Always make it a point to study the subjects which you find easier to learn first. You’ll be affected if you do
not know the answer to any topic. 3 This will just upset you and send you into panic mode.
When you are in the examination room, follow these steps. Before the examination starts, make sure your
question paper is complete, Read the instructions carefully. 4 Divide your time carefully for each question
and move on to the next question even if you have not finished the first.
5 Do not worry about what you could have done or haven’t done. Try not to discuss the answers with
your friends. You should not allow anything to upset the rest of the examination.
A.Finally, after each paper, go home and rest.
B.Settle the easy questions first.
C.Exam stress affects most students in various ways.
D.Calm down and remember to finish the answer.
E.Therefore, do not go round asking crazily for the answer.
F.This will help to reduce your worries in the morning.
G.A lot of students are excited when facing the first examination.
(23-24高二上·江苏徐州·期末)There are a lot of chemicals that can cause indoor air pollution. A recent
project conducted has found over 900 different substances in our home are related to it. Many researchers have
already examined the causes of indoor air pollution. 1
It has been proved that different kinds of chemicals can be released by building materials and new furniture.
Everything from painting and decorating products, bathroom cleaners and beauty products can contain these chemicals.
学学科科网网((北北京京))股股份份有有限限公公司司2 For instance, cooking generates a lot of harmful emissions, like frying meat in oil.
As a research from Denmark has highlighted, cooking, particularly roasting can damage our body. Roast dinners
contain many potentially harmful pollutants. 3 When exposed to cooking emissions, people actually had
DNA damage. It can be associated with cell repair processes that trigger cancer—causing genetic changes. 4
And what can we do with it?
As far as cooking emissions are concerned, no one is suggesting switching to takeaways. 5 For
example, cooking meat at high temperatures with lots of fat produces more harmful emissions than boiling pasta.
Besides, opening windows and using cooker hoods are preferable so that we can enjoy the roasted meat without those
undesirable effects.
A.In the long run, these changes lead to cancer.
B.They might also arise from cooking at home.
C.A wide range of sources are under investigation.
D.Therefore, what results from indoor air pollution?
E.However, most of us have ignored their bad effects.
F.So, what are the main contributors to poor air quality?
G.But we can change how we cook to deal with the emissions.
(23-24高二上·江苏南京·期末)As the autumn colors fade over time, cold days are well underway. The Start
of Winter or “Lidong” (立冬), the 19th solar term (节气) in China, begins this year on Nov. 7 and ends on Nov. 21.
1 For the northern hemisphere, biting winds blow from the north, crops harvested in autumn have
been stored up, and creatures begin to rest and hibernate (冬眠) for the coming winter.
Three phases (阶段) of Lidong
2 In the first phase of Lidong, water begins to freeze. Ice often encrusts lakes in just one night in
northern China, which reminds people of the coming cold winter. The second phase of Lidong brings frozen ground.
The thin ice is easily broken if stepped on. The ice covers and protects crops and farmlands from pests and
discases. 3 As migratory birds move south and resident birds store their food in the nest, the sky often
seems lonely without its winged friends.
Traditional customs
On the day of Lidong, people would treat themselves with feasts, as a reward for their hard work during the busy
months. Some brave swimming enthusiasts take a dive in cold rivers to celebrate the Beginning of Winter, and of
course, to exercise their bodies.
学学科科网网((北北京京))股股份份有有限限公公司司4 For people in southern China, high-caloric food such as beef, chicken, mutton, and fish is their
favorites during the days of Lidong, and can provide enough energy and fat to help them see the winter out.
Turn of the year
Though for the northern hemisphere, the days are getting colder and nights longer, the year will soon pass by.
5
A.Lidong is divided into three phases.
B.Birds are rarely seen in the third phase.
C.First things first.
D.As a matter of fact, Lidong is the beginning of the end.
E.Some living creatures begin to rest and store energy for the cold days.
