Five Grade 11 students, calling themselves “Team Voltage 5" from the
Philippine Science High School, engineered an innovative device named the
“S-Light" and secured a Silver Award at the Young Inventors Challenge 2019 in
Malaysia. This annual event, initiated in 2003, is meant to fuel a passion for
science among young minds. Uniquely, the S-Light differs from conventional
speakers by turning noise into electricity rather than using electricity to
produce sound.
In order to develop this device, Team Voltage 5 invested countless
lunchtimes in school laboratories, working closely with their science teachers.
A team member explained, “When sound
waves strike the diaphragm (振动膜) of the speaker, the interaction
between the magnet (磁铁) and coil (线圈) generates electrical energy. This is
stored in a power bank to power a light. “This process is essentially the
opposite of how traditional speakers work.
The S-Light proves highly effective in environments abundant with noise,
such as airports, busy roads, or construction sites. With larger speakers and a
lot of devices , it holds the incredible potential to generate sufficient
electricity for an entire community and provide sustainable energy solutions.
While transforming noise into electricity is not a novel concept, no
practical device existed before. The creators of the “S-Light" were driven by
the prospect of assisting students in rural areas lacking electric lighting for
home study. 'They were keenly aware of their privilege in attending school and
expressed pride in contributing their invention to their nation as gratitude for
their educational opportunities.
The remarkable achievements of Team Voltage 5 serve as an inspiration,
encouraging other young individuals to realize their full potential to impact
others' lives and make great contributions to society through scientific
innovation and creativity.
24. What do we know about the “S-Light"?
A. It was initially operated in 2003. B. It uses electricity to make
sound.
C. It transforms sound into electricity. D. It works the same way as a
speaker.
25. What's paragraph 2 mainly about?
A. Why the “S-Light" matters. B. How the “S-Light" functions.
C. Where the “S-Light" stores energy. D. What issue the “S-Light"
addresses.
26. Which words can best describe Team Voltage 5?
A. Humorous and diligent. B. Creative and appreciative.
C. Curious and dependable. D. Productive and responsible.27. What message does the author mainly convey in the text?
A. Small actions bring about new insights.
B. Joint efforts are key to achieving success.
C. Important changes always arise from trial and error.
D. Innovative youth contribute to community well-being.

Never judge a book by its cover - even if the cover doesn't say much at
all. The first thing customers see when they walk into the Strand Book Store in
Manhattan is a table of nameless books with covers wrapped like Christmas
presents and titles replaced by general descriptions. The store calls it "Blind
Date With a Book".
People love it, “ Paul Colarusso, the communications director for the
Strand, said, "We put it right at the front of the store because it quite literally
stops people in their tracks. "People are attracted to the element of surprise,
which focuses attention and creates a dopamine(多巴胺) response,” Mr.
Tobin, an associate professor at Case Western University, said. Meanwhile,
stores have found a new way to sell books that are overlooked because they
are not new, best-selling or penned by a famous author.
Much like real dating, there's no perfect science, and an element of trial
and error is involved. Fantasy and mystery books work well. Forgotten books
from the past are great too. When in Rome by Sarah Adams is disguised as
"Freshly Baked Slow Bum Rom-com". Spoiler Alert by Olivia
Dade becomes a “You've Got Mail-esque Romance".
But not all bookstores have embraced the trend. Dozens of bookstore
owners around the country said they did not know what “Blind Date Books"
were. Others didn't participate in the trend because store policy prohibits
returns or exchanges which are necessary if someone has picked up a book
they have already read.
On a warm Friday morning, the bookstore is packed. About half the
customers stop at the " Blind Date Books" display by the entrance, closely
inspecting the neatly drawn, wrapped covers. Heather Toner buys one.
"Throwing caution to the wind and letting someone else choose for me just
sort of feels like a nice change of pace," Ms. Toner, a reader, said. "I never
went on a real blind date. 'Blind Date With a Book' is kind of my speed. "
28. What makes "Blind Date With a Book” appealing to customers according
to Mr. Tobin?
A. The ability to choose specific titles.
B. The attractiveness of the packaging.
C. The excitement of an unforeseen choice.
D. The identification of dopamine response.
29. How does “Blind Date With a Book" benefit bookstores?
A. It enriches customers' choices. B. It satisfies readers' special
needs.C. It simplifies shopping procedures. D. It helps market less-known
books.
30. What does the underlined word “embraced" in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Overlooked. B. Blocked C. Guided. D. Adopted.
31. Which words best describe Heather Toner's attitude towards “Blind Date
With a Book"?
A. Open and adventurous B. Cautious and reserved.
C. Tolerant and indecisive. D. Dismissive and skeptical.

Environmental DNA (eDNA ) has become a crucial tool in ecological
research over recent years. By analyzing water, soil, or other environmental
materials for DNA pieces, researchers can tell that thousands of different
species have been in an area without having to observe the actual species
passing through.
To date, this eDNA process has mostly been employed to detect marine
(海洋的) creatures, insects, and other wildlife. However, according to a paper
published in Nature Ecology & Evolution, this technique could just as easily be
applied to spot humans.
An international team of researchers based at the University of Florida,
USA, demonstrated that human genomic(基因组的) information can be easily
detected in eDNA samples collected from water, sand, and even the air. While
this capability could have practical applications, such as aiding in the search
for missing persons or monitoring public health, the researchers highlight
significant moral concerns. These concerns include the lack of agreement from
individuals for their DNA to be collected, potential breaches (侵犯) of privacy,
and the risk of genetic information being used for commercial purposes.
This issue is particularly challenging for the field of eDNA, which relies on
open and easily accessible data. “It is standard practice in science to make
these data publicly available. However, this also means that if human
information is not screened out, anyone could access this information," says
senior author Professor David Duffy, a wildlife disease genomics researcher at
the University of Florida. “This raises issues around permission. Do we need to
ask permission to
collect these samples? Should we bring in some controls to remove
human genetic data?"
"Whenever we make a technological advancement, there are both
beneficial and concerning potential uses. This situation is no different," Duffy
explains. “We are raising these issues early so that policymakers and society
have adequate time to develop suitable guidelines.
32. What is the primary use of eDNA in ecological research?
A. Identifying species present in an area. B. Monitoring species
evolution processes.
C. Improving living conditions for wildlife. D. Sampling insects directly intheir habitats.
33. Why is the accessibility of eDNA data a potential problem?
A. It ignores practical applications of eDNA data.
B. It may lead to unchecked genetic engineering.
C. It could result in misuse of human genetic data.
D. It raises concerns about wildlife disease research.
34. What does Duffy suggest people concerned do?
A. To develop potential applications. B. To sample genetic
information.
C. To highlight advanced technology D. To establish appropriate
regulations.
35. What is the best title for the text?
A. eDNA; A New Frontier in Ecological Monitoring
B. eDNA: Human Detection Meets Privacy Challenges
C. eDNA: A Breakthrough in Marine Research Techniques
D. eDNA: Transforming Our Comprehension of Biodiversity

Students’ success and happiness can be improved by building their self-
belief - their perception (看法) of their capacity to complete a challenging
task. In a study with 763 students at Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University in
China, it was revealed that students with high self-belief excelled in their final
year projects. 36 On the contrary, students with low self-belief exhibited
lower levels of happiness and poorer performance, despite having access
toquality resources.
The participants in the study were studying a range of subjects, including
robotics, computer science, and electrical and electronic engineering. 37
These projects required them to develop research questions, design research
methodologies, and conduct data collection, analysis, and reporting.
38 Students were rated based on their responses to questions such as:
"I am able to identify and formulate ( 准确表达)a substantial research
problem, and produce a plan to .address the problem. " Additionally, the
survey included questions about the students opinions on the project
allocation(分配)process.
The analysis of the survey data indicated that students with higher self-
belief demonstrated greater confidence in their ability to tackle challenging
tasks. 39 They were more likely to reflect on their performance post-
completion. In contrast, students with lower self-belief showed less
confidence in their ability to handle complex projects.
The findings of this research suggest that building self-belief can lead to
improved academic outcomes and increased student happiness. 40 For
example, they can provide constructivefeedback to enhance students' critical thinking skills and self-belief.
Creating a supportive learning environment also encourages students to take
on challenges without fear of failure. Furthermore, integrating self-reflection
activities can help students recognize and build upon their strengths,
promoting a continuous cycle of improvement and self-assurance.
A. They view difficulties as opportunities for barriers.
B. Schools enable students to join in class discussions.
C. During their final year, these students undertook specific projects.
D. They invested more time in understanding the project requirements.
E. Educators can play a crucial role in promoting students' confidence.
F. They also reported higher satisfaction with their learning experiences.
G. To assess the students' self-belief, the researchers developed a five-
point system.

In most people's eyes, the pit (果核) of a fruit is a waste, but in the
hands of a miniaturist (微雕师), this tiny nut can 56 ( turn) from waste into
wonder. As both a time-honored and young art, nut carving began to emerge
57 a national cultural heritage in 2008. Dating back to Song Dynasty (960.-
1279), the complicated process is like playing ballet on the pit, with the main
tools being file, chisel and drill. Small as it is, it has different styles, 58 ( vary)
significantly from northern to southern regions.
The northern style is mainly practiced in Shandong Province where nut
carving is often done on peach pits, the surface layer of 59 is rich in fold
texture (纹理) skillfully employed by the miniaturist 60 ( carve) vivid three-
dimensional shapes.
The southern style particularly finds its popularity in Jiangsu Province.
When examining Suzhou nut carving 61 ( specific), artists tend to select olive
pits with thick outer walls and smooth surfaces, allowing for the 62
( achieve) of fine carvings.
Nut carving is young as it has only been trendy for about 20 years,
featuring a shift from handicrafts to 63 (fashion) items. Modern

Our family outing to the all-you-can-eat buffet turned into an evening to remember. The
atmosphere was lively and busy, with the noise of plates and the sound of conversations creating
a warm and inviting setting. The smell of freshly cooked food floated through the air, inviting
everyone to try a little bit of everything. The buffet was a feast for the senses, with steaming trays
of dishes from all over the world. The kids were particularly thrilled at the sight of the dessert
section, which they had been eagerly longing for all week. Their eyes widening at the array of
cakes, ice creams, and pastries, they quickly made plans to sample everything.
As we sat down to enjoy our meals, chatting cheerfully about the various food options, my
husband's attention was drawn to an elderly man standing by the chocolate milk dispenser (分液
器). The man seemed determined, but his hands were shaking, making it difficult for him to fill
two glasses. My husband watched him for a moment, a concerned look on his face. "Now, how
on earth is he going to carry that milk back to his table?" he wondered aloud, his eyes narrowing
in thought. He noticed the man's expression of concentration and effort, and a wave of sympathy
made him restless. The kids, absorbed in their plates, hadn't noticed, but my husband couldn't
look away.
I glanced at my husband and raised my eyebrows( 眉 毛 ) with a knowing smile. He
immediately understood my silent message. The next moment, without a word, he got up from
his seat and approached the elderly gentleman. I watched as he gently placed a hand on the
man's shoulder, offering a kind smile. I felt a warm wave of pride and admiration for my husband.
His kind-hearted nature always managed to shine through in moments like these, making me
realize how lucky I was to have him by my side.
