Picture this: Australia, 1932. Retired soldiers of World War I were given land to farm, only to face their
toughest enemy—giant, hungry birds!
After World War I, the Australian government sought to settle over 5,000 soldiers as farmers in Western
Australia. However, the region’s poor soil and unpredictable rainfall made farming difficult. When a severe
drought in 1932 drove nearly 20,000 hungry emus (鸸鹋) into the farmland, the birds—breaking fences
and damaging the crops—became the final straw for the struggling farmers.
2025届高考模拟考试 高三英语试卷(共 8 页)第 3 页The government’s response was quick and strange: it declared war...on birds. What officials expected to
be an easy victory turned into a surprising and odd event known as the “Emu War”.
Armed with machine guns, the soldiers didn’t take their opponents seriously, assuming the flightless birds
would be no match for bullets. Yet the effort quickly turned into chaos. In the first three days, the men killed
only 30 emus as the birds demonstrated remarkable survival strategies. Instead of staying in large groups, the
emus spread out, making them difficult to target. Military reports documented the birds’ astonishing speed,
which could reach up to 55 km/h across uneven ground. Most incredibly, witnesses observed what appeared
to be cooperative behaviors, with some birds seemingly functioning as guards to warn the group of danger,
enabling them to escape the gunfire.
After 45 days, the soldiers had killed only about 2,500 emus and used 10,000 bullets! Facing public
criticism and growing calls for humane (人道的) treatment of the animals, the government was forced
to withdraw its forces.
While the Emu War ended in military failure, it transformed these birds into national symbols of
survival and adaptability. Today, the emu proudly appears on Australia’s coat of arms, symbolizing
nature’s ultimate victory.
24. Why did the government declare war on emus?
A. To train soldiers. B. To protect crops.
C. To save the straw. D. To test new weapons.
25.Which strategy did the emus NOT use to survive the attack?
A. Air attack. B. Lookout system.
C. Speed advantage. D. Flexible movements.
26.What ultimately caused the government to end the war?
A. Shortage of bullets. B. Success of the mission.
C. Mercy from the soldiers. D. Pressure from the public.
27. How would the two sides describe the event?
A. Emus: Birds of a feather flock together.
B. Emus: The best defense is a good offense.
C. Soldiers: Never underestimate your enemy.
D. Soldiers: The pen is mightier than the sword.
C
Fungi (真菌) are among the most important organisms on Earth. They’re key actors in forest carbon
storage, nutrient cycling, as well as plant growth and resistance to environmental stress. They are also
important to human cultures, including as a source of food, medicine and art. This is why it’s an understatement
to say that the world’s ecosystems and human societies are shaped by fungi. And yet fungi continue to be an
important but overlooked element of conservation strategies.
Around 84% of known vertebrates (脊椎动物) have IUCN (国际自然保护联盟) conservation statuses, but
only 0.5% of described fungi are on the IUCN Red List. Fungi are hard to study due to their microscopic size,
short lifespans, and hidden habitats. Much of their diversity remains unknown, as many seemingly identical
fungi are genetically distinct species. This complexity makes fungi conservation less appealing to the public.
To protect the unknown, some initiatives are emerging. In Quebec, over 70 biologists signed an opinion
letter encouraging the government to integrate fungi into its legislative framework. Such progress is not trivial
and may help correct misconceptions about fungi that continue to be present among the public, economic
sectors and policymakers. For example, the misconception that fungi are plants is something that still persists to
2025届高考模拟考试 高三英语试卷(共 8 页)第 4 页this day. Allowing this misconception to continue is harmful to the field of fungi, and may be preventing it
from becoming an independent discipline that deserves dedicated specialists.
Failing to protect fungi threatens their vital roles in ecosystems and human life. Like plants and animals, fungi
face extinction risks from habitat loss, pollution, invasive species, and climate change. Many undiscovered
species, especially in remote areas like rainforest, may already be at high risk. To conserve fungi, we must
gather more data on their diversity, fund research, and attract young scientists to biology. The more we study
fungi, the clearer it becomes how much we still don’t know.
28.What can we learn from the first paragraph?
A. Human society and nature originate from fungi.
B. Fungi are the most important organisms on earth.
C. Environmental pressure can cause enormous damage to fungi.
D. Fungi are of great importance in ecosystems and our societies.
29.What contributes to the lack of fungi conservation awareness?
A. Their simple genetic structure.
B. The difficulty in distinguishing species.
C. Their demanding needs for living conditions.
D. The insufficient financial support for fungi research.
30.What does the underlined word “trivial ” probably mean?
A. invaluable. B. insignificant. C. apparent. D. limited.
31.Which of the following can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Fungi: Forgotten Guardians Awaiting Conservation.
B. The Conservation Crisis: Fungi in the IUCN Red List.
C. Exploring the Unknown: Future Challenges in Fungi Research.
D. From Plants to Independent Discipline: The Cognitive Revolution of Fungi.
D
A futuristic world has always been charming to humans. Movies and sci-fi novels have made us fantasize
about a society flooded with humanoid robots that helps free us from mind-numbing tasks while we focus on
things that require our attention or simply relax.
Brain-computer interface (BCI) (脑机接口) is one such technology. Pioneered by Elon Musk’s
Neuralink, these brain implants could enable mind-controlled computing—potentially going far beyond just
reading thoughts. This can solve many medical conditions, including paralysis, anxiety, and addiction. BCI
chips acquire brain signals, analyze them, and translate them into commands sent to output devices that carry
out desired actions. It does not use normal neuromuscular (神经肌肉的) output pathways. It is often used as
assisted living devices for individuals with neuromuscular disorders such as stroke, or spinal cord injury.
Basically, BCI results from the blend of technologies from the fields of electrical engineering, computer
science, biomedical engineering, and neurosurgery. These BCI devices are of two types, namely, Non-invasive
(非侵入性的) BCI and Invasive BCI. Non-invasive BCI tools use sensors applied on or near the head to track
and record brain activity. These ones can be placed and removed easily, but their signals may be indistinct and
imprecise. However, Invasive BCI requires surgery as they are to be implanted beneath the skull, directly into
the brain, to target specific sets of neurons, thus providing a much clearer and more accurate signal between the
brain and the device.
2025届高考模拟考试 高三英语试卷(共 8 页)第 5 页Using BCIs can potentially enhance its personnel’s physical and cognitive power. While BCIs try to
imitate the way our brains function, understanding the mechanics can be quite challenging for researchers.
Further, there have been concerns on ethical grounds on this research. This includes privacy and security issues.
Ethicists fear that captured neural signals can be used to gain access to a user’s private information. On the
other hand, because BCI chips and devices capture signals directly from a subject’s nervous system, this
transmitted data can be extracted for evil purposes, or even the whole BCI system can be broken into by
cybercriminals. Hope these issues are addressed before the commercial launch of BCIs in the future.
32. According to the text, who may benefit most from BCI?
A. A woman losing her ability to speak.
B. An engineer thirsty for high productivity.
C. A patient incapable of moving after injuries.
D. An athlete aiming for improved performance.
33. What can we learn about BCI from the third paragraph?
A. Non-invasive BCI provides clearer signals.
B. Invasive BCI enables precise neural recordings.
C. Invasive BCI can be easily removed like a headset.
D. Non-invasive BCI requires permanent skull implants.
34.What’s the potential risk BCI may bring in the text?
A. Theft of brain data. B. Short service life of implanted devices.
C. High cost of BCI devices. D. Difficulty in understanding brain signals.
35. The author’s attitude towards BCI is ________.
A. Strongly negative. B. Fully supportive.
C. Cautiously optimistic. D. Completely indifferent.
第二节 (共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
One of the most valuable investments you can make is in yourself. 36 In reality, these excuses
often stem from undervaluing personal growth. Self-investment isn’t about grand gestures—it’s choosing
actions that enrich your life, whether learning a skill, exploring a new place, or nurturing meaningful
relationships. Even small efforts, like reading a book, spending time in nature, or attending a workshop, can
spark significant growth. 3 7
To begin, start with simple and achievable steps. 3 8 For instance, join a fitness class, enroll in
an online course, or try a creative hobby like painting. Workshops and seminars not only build skills but also
connect you with like-minded peers. Focus on forming habits that support your goals—whether waking up
earlier, practicing mindfulness, or dedicating 30 minutes daily to learning. Equally important is letting go of
habits that hold you back, such as procrastination or negative self-talk.
3 9 Completing a course or mastering a hobby boosts confidence, proving you can overcome
challenges. Unlike temporary jobs, the skills you develop—like critical thinking or communication—stay with
you, creating lifelong stability. Additionally, investing in relationships strengthens your support network,
offering joy and resilience during tough times.
Don’t wait for the “perfect moment.” If you’re on the fence about a new venture or opportunity that
would enrich your life, don’t pass it up by continuously telling yourself that you’ll do it “someday.” 40
Instead, ask yourself: “Will this add value to my life?” If the answer is yes, act now. Don’t wait any longer to
get started.
A. After all, tomorrow is another day.
B. Watch small efforts blossom into lasting rewards.
C. Tomorrow after tomorrow, yet tomorrow never arrives.
2025届高考模拟考试 高三英语试卷(共 8 页)第 6 页D. With this perspective, the process becomes straightforward.
E. Yet, many people delay this, claiming they lack time or money.
F. Identify activities that correspond with your interests and budget.
G. But all too often, the benefits of investing in yourself get lost in the chaos.

Choosing a Major: Passion or Practicality?
第二节 (满分25分)
阅读下面的材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
One morning when I woke up, a shocking realization struck me: I have probably lived more years
than I have left. It wasn’t about death, exactly—it was about time. All those things I’d told myself I’d do
someday suddenly seemed ridiculous. Someday was NOW.
That’s how I found myself standing in front of a piano later that day. I hadn’t touched one in decades. Not
since I was twelve, when I quit after my piano teacher sighed and said, “Adam, you play like a typewriter.”
But my daughter, Olivia, had been taking lessons for years. Watching her practice—her small hands
moving effortlessly through Chopin’s nocturnes (《夜曲》)—I felt a stupid, stubborn jealousy. Not of her
talent, but of her freedom. She played because she loved it. I had stopped because I was afraid of failing.
So, in secret, I signed up for adult beginner classes at a community center. The teacher, a kind Russian
woman named Irina, would tap my wrist with a pencil when I rushed. “Music is not a race,” she’d say. "You
must make friends with each note." But to me, it was a race. Every wrong note made me think I was too
old to learn new things.
For months, I practiced in the basement after everyone was asleep. My goal was simple: to play Nocturne
in E-flat Major (《降E大调夜曲》) at my fiftieth birthday dinner without embarrassing myself. And the night
arrived soon. Family and friends crowded our apartment. Wine flowed, laughter rose, and then, all eyes turned
to me as I sat at the piano. My hands shook. The first notes sounded rough and shaky. Halfway through, my
fingers got mixed up, and I stopped dead. Silence fell. I could almost hear the collective thought: Poor Adam,
having his midlife crisis at the piano.
2025届高考模拟考试 高三英语试卷(共 8 页)第 8 页注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
