第一节
Choosing a Major: Passion or Practicality?
As a graduating senior, I often discuss with my classmates whether to choose a college major
based on passion or practicality. After much thought, I firmly believe passion should guide our choice of
college majors.
Firstly, passion acts as the strongest motivator. When we study what truly interests us, we naturally
invest more time and energy, which often leads to better academic performance. Moreover, a major driven
by passion can translate into a fulfilling career. Financial rewards may change, but the joy of engaging in
meaningful work endures. Finally, the job market is constantly evolving. Those who are passionate about
their field are more adaptable, willing to learn new skills, and better equipped to face challenges. In
conclusion, following our passion is the path to both personal fulfillment and professional success.
Possible version 1
Then, from the corner, Olivia called out, “Start again, Dad.” Her voice cut through the silence like
a clear note, steady and sure. Something in her expression loosened the knot in my chest. Taking a breath,
I positioned my stiff fingers once more on the keys. This time, I didn’t rush. I just focused on the music
—each note, each pause, each breath between the phrases. Though my hands still stumbled, the melody
emerged, fragile but recognizable. I knew the performance was far from perfect, and I braced myself for
the inevitable—the polite coughs or the awkward chuckles that would surely follow such a clumsy attempt.
But this time, no one laughed. They just... listened. My brother, who had teased me mercilessly about
everything since we were children, stood quietly by the window. My wife watched with a soft expression I couldn't
quite read. When the final chord faded, there was a moment of silence. Then came the applause. Olivia pushed
through the crowd and wrapped her arms around me, “That was brave,” she whispered. And somehow, in
that moment, all those years of hesitation, the fear of failure, and the weight of “someday” melted into
something lighter. Tonight, I had not only befriended each note, but had also made peach with the parts of
myself. I was just here. Alive. And that was enough.
Possible version 2
Then, from the corner, Olivia called out,“Start again, Dad.” Her voice was clear, confident,
without a trace of the embarrassment I would have felt at her age. That simple encouragement steadied me
like an anchor in rough waters. As my fingers found the keys again, Irina's words floated back: “You
must make friends with each note.” This time, I let the music come as it would—all the years of triumph
and disappointment seeming to flow through my fingertips into the piano. It was like a conversation rather
than a recitation. My fingers still stumbled, but I just kept going.
1But this time, no one laughed. The room was quiet in a way that felt different—no pity, no awkward
shifting, just something close to understanding. When the final chord faded, I looked up to find my wife’s
eyes glistening and something like recognition on the faces around me. Then Olivia started clapping, and
soon the others joined in, not out of politeness but something genuine. It hit me that I hadn’t really
wanted to play perfectly. I’d wanted to prove I could still begin something. And that, I realized, was the
point all along.

Good morning, everyone! Welcome to my class! This class is called Introduction to Academic Writing, and the
university requires successful completion of this class to continue as a student here. For those of you in Engineering,
you'll be required to get a C or better. Students in the Business School may pass with a B, and everyone else just
needs to get a D or above. We have class three times a week for 15 weeks. You must come to all the classes. Look at
your course description on Page 2, you'll see the attendance policy. If you're absent for 10% of the classes, your final
grade will be lowered 10%. That means you must make every effort to come to all the classes. Now for the structure
of the class: on Mondays and Wednesdays, I'll deliver lectures, give quizzes on the readings, and lead discussions on
various topics. On Fridays, you'll have in-class writings that will count for 25% of your grade. We don't have exams
in this class. Instead, you'll show me what you have learned by writing three essays. These essays are worth 50% of
your final grade. The remaining 25% will be made up of daily homework assignments. On the last page, you will see
our reading and homework schedule. The first assignment is due on Wednesday, just two days from now, so be sure
to buy the textbook tonight. All right, that's enough for the time being. Are there any questions?
