5 The application and widespread use of artificial intelligence is
developing rapidly. Some people have postulated that its development will
ultimately result in its surpassing of human intelligence which is already happening in
many fields, and lead to a revolution in human affairs. These people believe therefore
that we should control or regulate its development. Are you to a certain
extent in agreement with this viewpoint or not? Explain you own position
in this regard
6 Artificial intelligence surpasses that of human intelligence in many domains. It has
been programmed to master a variety of games, such as chess and
poker, winning against its champion human counterparts. It has long ago
supplanted humans in activities involving calculations, and is dominating
manufacturing processes more and more in the form of robots. Do you have any concerns
that the further development of artificial intelligence will result in its replacing human
intelligence and driving human out of many of their7 Artificial intelligence is the development of computer systems to
perform tasks, usually or previously requiring human intelligence. Some
concerns have been raised as to where this development is
leading us when considering the noticeable effects on employment in
certain categories of work. What are currently its main applications as it affects our
daily lives and how is it influencing the way we live now and in the near future?

9 In recent years, the public has become increasingly concerned over the issue of food
safety. Scandals such as finding the presence of melamine, an organic base chemical
used in plastics, in milk powder, and Sudan Red, a carcinogenic colorant
used to dye solvents and petrol, in sauces for KFC products, has naturally
caused widespread public fear. Food products, traders in food products as well as
the Chinese government have variously been blamed for the occurrence of this crisis.
In your opinion, who should be accountable for this situation.
10 In China, a number of large scale food safety scandals arising from food
contamination or deliberate addition of carcinogenic dyes or other dangerous non-food
additives have made the public fearful of locally produced foodstuffs. This has resulted in
a growing distrust of domestic food products. It has also increased public preference for
foods imported from overseas food producers who are regarded as models of food safety,
to the detriment of local agriculture and the local food industry. To what extent do you
agree or disagree with this opinion?

12 The process of nuclear power generation releases relatively low amounts of the
compounds found in greenhouse gases in comparison of power generated from other
energy resources, particularly coal and oil. It also has a larger power
generating capacity relative to the materials consumed. Nuclear
power is therefore an ideal source of power. To what extent do you agree or disagree with
this opinion?
13 As a result of the regulatory measures imposed on ageing nuclear plants by
governments, owing to the risk to the population in the event of a
nuclear accident, they are often required to retire them earlier than their
designed lifespan. However, as nuclear plants provide carbon-‐free
energy, the premature ' shutdowns often result in adverse effects on climate change, as
they are replaced by coal or oil energy sources. You are required to propose solutions to
this dilemma.

16 Global warming is a problem that is increasingly haunting human beings. Some people
are suggests that instead of trying to prevent it, we should just find a way of living with it. Is
this a feasible option and to what extent do you agree with this proposal?
17 Global warming poses an ever-increasing threat to our planet as governments fail to
take the steps necessary to sufficiently address the situation. In order to contain this threat,
we need to limit greenhouse gas emissions and deliberately slow the economic growth
rate in the word. Explain why you agree or disagree with these suggestions.
