M: Participants in Girls on Rock get to explore forests, go hiking in mountains and sleep under the stars. The
programme also provides them with the chance to carry out field research with actual scientists. In late July, a team of nine girls and five instructors launched the first Girls on Rock trip. The group spent 12
days in the Gore Mountains near Frisco, Colorado. Each girl took turns climbing a wall of rock. After climbing, the
girls took a hike. During the hike, they stopped for a lesson on map reading. They also learned how to find their
position on the Earth using nothing but a thin rope and information about their current height above sea level.
The young woman had several reasons for wanting to enter the programme. They wanted to meet new people,
be involved in science during the summer break and face their tears. They were surprised by how quickly they
made friends as they learned to trust themselves and others.
Girls on Rock does not consider academic performance when choosing participants. Instead, interested girls
are asked to explain in writing why they want to participate in the programme.
Evelyn Cheng, an ecologist, and Megan Blanchard, a chemical ecologist, began developing the programme in
2014. Blanchard said she felt she was given many opportunities and wants to give that to others.

When Chase Bailey was found to have autism (自闭症) at 2, his mother Mary Bailey feared he’d never enjoy
a typical life. Indeed, he hasn’t. Occupied with appearances with famous people and hosting his own cooking show,
Chase’s life is anything but typical. During the past years, the teenager has cooked noodles with food master Roy
Choi and baked cookies for guests at a celebration in Los Angeles.
The days when Chase would eat nothing but pizza, chicken, French fries, and chocolate chip cookies almost
seem like a distant memory. For him to go from that to cooking and eating all kinds of different things is pretty
astonishing.
After the diagnosis (诊断) of Chase’s disease, friends prepared Mary for the worst: He’d never be able to have
a job, never learn to socialize, and never be independent. Like many autistic patients, the sight, smell, feel and taste
of almost everything on Chase’s plate tipped him over the edge.
However, when he watched cooking shows with his grandfather, he became addicted to seeing people enjoy
what they were eating and started asking to try some of the food on the shows. Two years later, he recorded the first
episode (集) of “Chase N Yur Face” with the help of his mother, which they posted on social media. The show
quickly caught the attention of autism groups. Chase started reaching out to chefs he admired by email to invite
them to tape episodes with him.
In the show which has more than 30 episodes, a confident Chase cooks everything from cupcakes to roasted
meats. It has harvested tens of thousands of views. He dreams of one day seeing his show on television and wants
to open his own restaurant. He hopes his experience can help others with autism. “Don’t be afraid to be yourself,”
he said.
24.How is Chase’s life?
A.It is a typical one. B.It is full of bitter experiences.
C.It is like other autistic kids’. D.It is beyond his mom’s expectations.
25.What does the underlined part in paragraph 3 indicate?
A.Food was appealing to Chase. B.Food on Chase’s plate tasted bad.
C.Chase had no appetite for most food. D.Chase wanted to cook himself.
26.Where did Chase get the inspiration to learn to cook?
A.From autism groups. B.From his grandfather.
C.From food masters. D.From cooking programs.27.Which is the best title of the text?
A.Food Changed Chase’s Life

Like many autistic patients, the sight, smell, feel and taste of
almost everything on Chase’s plate tipped him over the edge.(和许多自闭症患者一样,Chase盘子里几乎所有东

Researchers have proposed a novel method for counting and tracking vehicles on public roads, a development
that could improve current traffic systems and help travelers get to their destinations faster.
Using the cameras already installed on campus buses at the Ohio State University, researchers proved that they
could automatically and accurately measure counts of vehicles on urban roadways, detect objects in the road and
distinguish parked vehicles from those that are moving.
In previous studies, Ohio State researchers found that using these mobile cameras provides much better spatial
and temporal (时间的) coverage than relying on often temporarily placed sensors that don’t provide a view of many
streets and roads in a city.
“If we collect and process more high-resolution (高清) spatial information about what’s happening on the
roads, then planners could better understand changes in demand, effectively improving efficiency in the broader
transportation system,” said Keith Redmill, lead author of the study.
“If we can measure traffic in a way that is as good or better than what is conventionally done with fixed
sensors, then we will have created something incredibly useful extremely cheaply,” he said. “Our goal is to start
building a system that could do this without much manual intervention because if you want to collect this
information over lots of potential vehicles and lots of time, it’s worth fully automating that process.”
While still a long way from total implementation (实施), the study suggests the system’s results bear promise
for the future of intelligent traffic surveillance. Transportation planners, engineers and operators make vital
decisions about the future of our roadways, so when designing transportation systems to work over the next 30 to
50 years, it’s necessary that we give them data that allows them to improve the efficiency of the system and the
level of service provided to travelers.
28.How can cameras on buses benefit travelers?
A.By shortening their travel time.
B.By making their schedules tight.
C.By decreasing their transport cost.D.By improving their safety awareness.
29.What can we know about the sensors placed on buses?
A.They provide more spatial coverage.
B.They can’t detect objects on the road.
C.They cover less view of the urban traffic.
D.They accurately record the flow of traffic.
30.What does the underlined word “surveillance” in paragraph 6 mean?
A.Operation. B.Monitoring. C.Protection. D.Arrangement.
31.What is a suitable title for the text?
A.Transportation automation is on its way
B.It is time to improve the efficiency of traffic system
C.Transportation planners use cameras to make policies
D.Cameras installed on buses can better measure traffic
【答案】28.A 29.C 30.B 31.D

故选A。
In previous studies, Ohio State researchers found that using these mobile
cameras provides much better spatial and temporal (时间的) coverage than relying on often temporarily placed
sensors that don’t provide a view of many streets and roads in a city.(在之前的研究中,俄亥俄州立大学的研究

Using the cameras already installed on campus buses at the Ohio State
University, researchers proved that they could automatically and accurately measure counts of vehicles on urban
roadways, detect objects in the road and distinguish parked vehicles from those that are moving.(俄亥俄州立大学

California has been using recycled wastewater for many years. A team has used it to make ice surfaces for the
game of hockey(冰球运动). It has been used to make snow for the sport of skiing. And farmers use it to water their
crops. But it has not been used directly for drinking water.
Recently, California officials approved new rules to let water agencies recycle wastewater and put it right back
into the pipes that carry drinking water to homes, schools, and businesses. It is a big step for California.
California’s new rules would let—but not require—water agencies to take wastewater, treat it, and then put it
right back into the drinking water system. That means proving to people that recycled water is not only safe to
drink but also not dirty. California would be just the second US state to permit this, following Colorado. It has
taken officials more than 10 years to develop these rules, a process that included several studies by independent
groups of scientists.
A project in San Diego is aiming to produce nearly half of the city’s water through recycling wastewater by
2035. And the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California aims to produce up to nearly 570 million
liters(升)a day for its 19 million people. Adel Hagekhalil is with Metropolitan Water. He said the new rules will
permit new projects that have not yet been considered.
California’s new rules require the wastewater be treated for all bacteria and viruses, even if they are notpresent in the wastewater. In fact, the treatment is so intense that it removes all of the minerals that make fresh
drinking water taste good. That means the minerals need to be added back at the end of the process. Polhemus is a
director of the drinking water group for the California Water Resources Control Board. “It’s at the same drinking
water quality, and probably better in many instances,” he said, adding that it takes time and money to build these
treatment centers. So, they will only be available for bigger cities at first.
32.What does paragraph 1 mainly tell us about the recycled wastewater?
A.Its qualities. B.Its functions.
C.Its target users. D.Its disadvantages.
33.What do California and Colorado have in common?
A.They made some new rules on pollution.
B.They spent ten years recycling wastewater.
C.They tried to make wastewater safe to drink.
D.They requested water agencies to speed up treating water.
34.What is Polhemus’s attitude to turning recycled wastewater to drinking water?
A.Doubtful. B.Favorable. C.Pessimistic. D.Indifferent.
35.What is the best title for the text?
A.The Process of Recycling Wastewater Is Complicated
B.California Tries to Reduce the Wastewater Generation
C.California Permits Turning Wastewater to Drinking Water
D.New Wastewater Treatment Projects Have Been Approved

根据最后一段中Polhemus说的话“It’s at the same drinking water quality, and probably
better in many instances(它的饮用水质量相同,在很多情况下可能会更好)”可知,Polhemus认为,用回收的
Recently, California officials approved new rules to let water
agencies recycle wastewater and put it right back into the pipes that carry drinking water to homes, schools, and
businesses. It is a big step for California.(最近,加州官员批准了新的规定,允许水务机构回收利用废水,并
In some US states, gym class is changing. Many schools are focusing on getting students ready for life after
high school. They are looking for ways to leave even the least athletic kids with the will and skills to keep moving.
For gym teachers, that means less focus on who is best at a sport. It means less rope climbing and dodgeball(躲避
A New Model
In one New York school district, there is no “gym” class. 37 They include dance, self- defense and rock
climbing. They include mountain biking, in-line skating, and boating.
“We want our kids…, to be active for life,” said Ron Whitcomb. He manages the physical education, or PE,
program for the Victor, New York, school district.
A US law passed in 2015 increased the importance of health and fitness in education. It also gave more
funding(资金) to PE programs.
Whitcomb’s program started before that law passed. 38 Connecticut, Vermont and Michigan are allplanning to improve PE’s place in their schools.
Outside the Gym
Tracy Krause teaches PE in Washington State. For a few years, she has taken students fly-fishing and rock
climbing. 39 It combines PE, English, and science into one program. “We want kids to leave with a plan for
the future,” Krause said. “I think the same needs to be true about their health.”
Lifelong Skills
In Washington, D.C, all second-graders learn to ride bikes. Fourth- and seventh-graders learn parkour(跑酷).
Parkour teaches students to jump, climb and roll in the fastest way they can. Sixth- graders learn how to read a
compass. High schoolers swim. 40
Teachers hope to keep students liking, not hating, PE. That means finding sports or activities they enjoy.
A.They are also cutting back on team sports.
B.It means more bike riding and outdoor hikes.
C.Other schools are now following his program.
D.Instead there is a list of different fitness classes.
E.The school district’s goal is to teach lifelong skills.
F.She is part of her school’s “Outdoor Academy” program.
G.Kids who are not as athletic sometimes hate playing team sports.
B“It means more bike riding and outdoor hikes.( 这意味着更多的骑自行车和户外徒
They include dance, self- defense and rock climbing. They include mountain biking, in-line
D“ Instead there is
38.根据后文“Connecticut, Vermont and Michigan are all planning to improve PE’s place in their schools.( 康
C“Other schools are now following his program.(
39.根据后文“It combines PE, English, and science into one program.( 它把体育、英语和科学融为一体。)”
F“She is part of her school’s
“Outdoor Academy” program.”
In Washington, D. C, all second-graders learn to ride bikes. Fourth- and seventh-graders
learn parkour. Parkour teaches students to jump, climb and roll in the fastest way they can. Sixth- graders learn how
to read a compass.
E“The school district’s goal is to teach lifelong skills.( 该学区的目标是教授终身技能。)”
Whitcomb’s program started before that law passed. ___3___Connecticut, Vermont and Michigan are all planning
to improve PE’s place in their schools.
C “Other schools are now following his program.”
schools 即为下文中的their schools;his problem即为前文的Whitcomb’s program。

A Week In the Wild
Last week, I, together with 30 other students, went to Yunan and took part in the Wildlife Protection winter
camp held by WWF.
We spent one week in the wild rainforests learning about endangered animals from wildlife professionals. We
observed how different species of monkeys adapted themselves to their natural habitats. Plus, various activities to
help protect them have been organized, such as picking up plastics, removing nets and traps and putting up posters.
We were amazed by the tireless efforts that the locals were making.
The camp not only raised our environmental awareness, but also deepened our understanding of wildlife
protection. Only when we learn to exist in harmony with nature can we enjoy a better future together.

A man was driving home one evening on a two-lane country road. Jobs, in this small, mid-western community,
were very difficult to search. But he never quit looking. Ever since the factory closed, he’d been unemployed. With
winter coming, the cold had finally hit home.
It was a lonely road. Not very many people had a reason to be on it, unless they were leaving, Most of his
friends had already left. They had families to feed and dreams to fulfill. But he stayed on. After all, this was where
he buried his mother and father. He was born here and knew the country. He could go down this road blind, and tell
you what was on either side, and with his headlights not working, that came in handy.
It was starting to get dark and light snow was coming down. He’d better get a move on. You know, he almost
didn’t see the old lady, wandering on the side of the road. But even in the dim light of day, he could see she needed
help. So he pulled up in front of her and got out.
Even with the smile on his face, she was worried. No one had stopped to help for the last hour or so. Was he
going to hurt her? He didn’t look safe, and he looked poor and hungry. He could see that she was frightened,
standing out there in the cold. He knew how she felt. It was that cold that only fear can put in you. He said, “I’m
here to help you ma’am. Why don’t you wait in your car where it’s warm? By the way, my name is Joe.”

___________________________【答案】The old lady was surprised at his words and nodded slightly. All she had was a flat tire, but for an old
lady, that was bad enough. Joe crawled under the car looking for a place to put the jack, skinning his fingers a time
or two. Soon he was able to change the tire. But he had to get dirty and his hands hurt. She couldn’t thank him
enough for coming to her aid. Joe just smiled as he closed her trunk.
She asked him how much she owed him. Joe never thought about the money. This was not a job to him. This
was helping someone in need, and there were many people who had given him a hand in the past. He had lived his
whole life that way, and it never occurred to him to act any other way. He told her that if she really wanted to pay
him back, the next time she saw someone who needed help, she could give them the assistance that they needed.
The old lady nodded with tears rolling down from her eyes.
