Della Steward got the standard well-wishes on her blog on her 53rd birthday, but she got
some unusual messages too. One was about the Smith family who had just lost their four-year
-old son tocancer. His older brother was in deep sorrow. CouldDellahelp?
That message and the 30 or so others like it were exactly what Della was looking for. To
celebrate her 53rd,the long-time social service professional had put out a call onher blog. She
wanted to commit 53 random acts of kindness by the end of her birth month, and she needed
information on people who could use one. When she got the note about the Smith family, she
sent a wind chime( 风 铃 )with the message“Listen to the wind and know that I am
near”written on it. It now hangs in the four-year-old's bedroom, where his older brother can
go tolisten to itwhenever he wants.
This is not the first time that Della has decided to give gifts for her birthday. For her 47th,
in 2016, she founded Love in Action, an organization committed to doing something good
near her homeand beyond. Its aim is simple: Do YourBest, ShowYourLove!
Over the years, the organization has reached out and touched well over 100 strangers, some
found via Dclla's blog, others with help from her grandkids. The organization also shares
inexpensiveand creativegift ideas for others tohelppeople inneed.
Della pays for everything herself: gift cards, pay-it-forward purchases at drive-throughs,
and care packages, as well as the gas it takes to play fairy. Her family often gives her some
extra birthday cash with a serious warning against spending it on anyone else, which she
naturally ignores.“I got a couple of gift cards for my birthday this year and was like
'YESSS!”It's Della's party, and she'll give ifshe wants to.
24.Whatwere theunusual messages Dellagot onher 53rd birthday?
A.Help requests. B.Gift ideas.
C.Donation offers. D. Birthday wishes.
25.Whatcan we learn about Dellafrom hergift to theSmith family?
A.She is caring and brave.
B.She is loving and helpful.
C.She is patient and romantic.
D.She is creative and determined.
26.Whichof thefollowing best describes Love in Action?
A.It involves people in acts ofkindness.
B. It holds thebelief that kindness pays off.
C.It offers aidwithinDella's neighborhood.
D.It mainly aims toeducate kids tohelp out.
27.Why does Della's family give her warnings?
A.She thinks little of her family's cancer.
B.She treats strangers better than her family.
C.Sheis financially dependent on her family.
D.Sheis too ready togive away herbirthday gifts.
24.A。 One was
about theSmith family who had justlost theirfour-year-old son tocancer. Hisolder brother
was indeep sorrow. CouldDella help?
故选A。
25.B。推断题根据第二段的shesent awind chime(风铃)with themessage“Listen to the
wind and knowthat I am near”written onit.
B。
26.A。 定位题干Love in Action,定位原文第3 段she founded Love in Action, an
organization committed to doing something good near her home and beyond. Its aim is
simple: Do Your Best, Show Your Love!,得知这个组织是旨在在家乡附近为身边人做好
故选A。
27.D。 Her family often gives her some
extra birthday cash with a serious warning against spending it on anyone else, which she
naturally ignores.“I got a couple of gift cards for my birthday this year and was like
'YESSS!”It's Della's party, and she'll give if she wants to.

Beavers(海狸),like humans, change their surroundings to fit their needs. Known as nature's
engineers, they tear trees down to build homes to live in and dams to raise water levels for
protection from enemies. Dams also slow water's flow while blocking sediment(沉积物)that
would otherwise flow downstream. The resulting wetlands often attract wildlife diversity
There are challenges, though. Beaver dams sometimes cause
flooding, andmostpeople prefer trees aliveand upright.
Communities face a delicate balancing act, learning to coexist with beavers. Last winter,
many people enjoying Winston Path became beaver fans as one furry family transformed
SwallowPondinto an oasis for birds, frogs, turtles and deer.
Yet such activity caused concern. As beavers worked, they raised water levels about five
feet. The increased depth allows beavers to survive underwater if the pond ices over. But
county officials were concerned about how higher water would affect the soil bank
supportingWinston Path.
To find a good balance between protecting the path and the beavers, the county introduced
a“ beaver baffle”— a pond leveler.Beavers often rush to fill holes in their dams.Baffles
stabilize water levels by creating a hidden exit for high water to escape through the dam,
unnoticed bythebeavers.
People love the beavers but they also love the mature trees. Recently, Catherine Jones,18,
organized a tree-caging event — putting wire cloth around large tree trunks to discourage
beavers from biting them. It also protects people from injury due to random trees falling.“We
cover the trees we don't want them to eat, while planting periodically others they like,"said
Jones.“Weneed-to learntogive upalittleof ourwants to share theEarth's resources.”
SwallowPond's 2023project willrestore proper water depthand improvewildlife habitat
withoutcreating problems forthepath. The balancing act continues.
28.Whatis thefirst paragraph mainly about?
A. Wherebeavers' favorite surroundings are.
B. Whateffects beavers have ontheirhabitat.
C.Whybeavers are called nature's engineers.
D.Howbeavers help attract wildlifediversity.
29.Why did the beaver family's activity cause concern?
A.SwallowPond would flood often.
B.Sediment would flow downstream.
C. Thepopularpath might bedamaged.
D. Beavers might have to liveunderwater.
30.Whatdotheunderlined words“beaverbaffle”referto inparagraph 4?
A.Ablock to keep beavers away. B.A tool to fixholes in thedams.
C.Adevice tomaintain water level. D.Amaterial to protect the soil bank.
31.Whatis thetheme ofSwallowPond's 2023project?
A. Biological diversity. B.Harmonious coexistence.
C.Prevention ofnatural disasters. D.Preservation ofwildlife habitat.
The resulting wetlands often attract wildlife
diversity where none hadexisted. There are challenges, though.Beaver dams sometimes cause
学科网(北京)股份有限公司flooding, and most people prefer trees alive and upright."可知(海狸的活动)产生的湿地通常
会吸引原本不存在的野生动物多样性。不过,也存在挑战。海狸的水坝有时会引起食
物,大多数人更喜欢活的直立的树木。可推测海狸的活动对其栖息地产生正向和负向
的两种影响,故选项B (海狸对它们的栖息地有什么影响)为正确答案。
29.C,细节题。根据第三段最后一句“But county officials were concerned about how
higherwater would affect thesoil bank supporting WinstonPath"可知:但郡县里的官员担心,
根据第四段最后一句“Baffles stabilize water levels by creating a hidden
exitfor high water toescape through the dam, unnoticed by the beavers.”
根据最后一段“Swallow Pond's 2023 project will restore proper water
depth and improve wildlife habit at without creating problems for the path.” Swallow
D
Some bacteria(细菌)have a superpower that scientists would love to use. These bacteria
gain energy from light, just as plants do.Scientists have wanted to use cyanobacteria(蓝藻菌
)to make electricity. But in previous research, they didn't survive long on artificial
surfaces. Researchers have now moved them to a living surface — a mushroom. Their
creation isthe first mushroom tomake electricity.
Applied Physicist Simon Jackson and his team turned that mushroom into a mini energy
farm. This bionic(生物电子的)mushroom combines 3D printing, conductive ink and bacteria
togenerate electricity. Its design could lead to newways ofcombining nature withelectronics.
Like plants, cyanobacteria make their own food from sunlight, releasing electrons(电子).
When enoughelectrons build upinone place, they cancreate an electric current.
The researchers needed to bring a lot of these bacteria together. They decided to use 3D
printing to place them precisely onto a surface.Jackson's team chose mushrooms for that
surface. After all, they realized, mushrooms naturally host communities of bacteria and
other microbes. Finding test subjects for their tests was easy. Jackson simply went to the
grocery store and picked upwhitebutton mushrooms.
Printing on those mushrooms, though, turned out to be a real challenge. 3D printers have
been designed to print on flat surfaces, but mushroom caps are curved. The researchers spent
months writing computer code to solve the problem. Eventually, they came up with a
program to3D printtheir inkonto thecurved mushroom tops.
The researchers printed two“inks”onto their mushrooms. One was a green ink made
of cyanobacteria. They used this to make a spiral pattern on the cap. They also.used a black
ink made of graphene, which is great at conducting electricity. They printed this ink in a
branching pattern across themushroom top.
Then it was time to shine.
“Cyanobacteria are the real heroes here,”says Jackson. When his team shone light on the
mushrooms, the bacteria gave out electrons. Those electrons flowed into the graphene and
created an electric current.
32.Whatwas theproblem in previous research?
A. Cyanobacteria didn't produce electrons.
B.Cyanobacteriacouldn't get enoughlight.
C.Theresearchers chosethe wrong bacteria.
D.No suitablehomewas made forcyanobacteria.
33.Whywere mushrooms finally chosen as test subjects?
A.They are convenient to find.
B.They can produce electric currents.
C.They are where bacteria cannaturally grow.
D.They can be easily combined with 3Dprinting.
34.Whatis themajorfunction oftheblack ink inthis test?
A.Tofeed bacteria.
B.To deliver electrons.
C.Toproduce electricity.
D.Toreshape mushroom tops.
35.Whichof thefollowing isa suitabletitlefor thetext?
A.Whoare the real heroes? B. New application of3Dprinting
C.Nature combined with electrons D. Bionicmushroom makes electricity
previous research, they didn't survive long on the artificial surfaces”, they指的是前面提到
由题干“mushroom were finally chosen as test subjects”可定位到第
四自然段,“mushroom naturally host communities of bacteria and other microbes”可知
is great at conducting electricity", 此处考察熟词生义,conduct 意为"传导”conducting

Homegardens produce delicious food. But that's not theirmain virtue.
Imaginea plate holdingtwo strawberries, identical inappearance. One came out ofa super-
market box, probably harvested unripe. 36 The other was picked from a garden minutes
before being eaten. The first one will probably taste like a slightly sour grape while the
second is likely to besweet and rich in flavour.
Supermarket strawberries are not entirely without advantages. They are convenient and
available in the northern globe even in February. But the two berries differ from each other in
the same way that hearing Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata in a concert hall differs from
listeningto itonan old tape.. 37
Otherpeople, however, believe gardening awaste oftime. But thesamecould be said of
cooking. There are cheap and decent restaurants around, so why bother to make your own
meals? 38 They mistaketheproduct forthepurpose.
Actually, a garden, especially in the early years, can produce little but frustration(挫败感).
New gardeners may plant the wrong crops for their soil. Rabbits have an annoying habit of
taking single bites of vegetable, then leaving the rest to go bad.. 39 No matter. The real
joy of gardening is the time spent doing it. The deepest pleasure — as with cooking, writing,
bringing up children or almost anything worthwhile — is in the work itself.A gardener's
memories revolve not around the food produced, but around long afternoons with hands in
thedirt.
40
A.No one can ever avoid thishard stage.
B.So why don't we start homegardening fordelicious food?
C.Thismight explain why many people desire ahomegarden.
D.These peoplemisunderstand the ultimateappeal of gardening.
E.By the timeit reached theplateit mayhave been offthe plant fordays.
F.To garden istopatiently and lovingly helplifegrow, in theground and above it.
G.And even expert gardeners can losea season's harvest to uncooperativeweather.

E “By the time it reached
the plate it may have been off the plant for days”.
37. C。根据空格前一句“But the two berries differ from each other in the same way that
hearing Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata in a concert hall differs from listening to it on a old
tape.
即对应C项“This might explain why many
people desire a home garden.
38. D.根据空格前几句“Other people, however, believe gardening a waste of time. But
the same could be said of cooking. There are cheap and decent restaurants around, so why
bother to make your own meals?
They mistake the
product for the purpose.
即D项“These people misunderstand the ultimate appeal of gardening” ,
39. G。根据空格上前几句“ Actually, a garden, especially in the early years, can produce
little but frustration. New gardeners may plant the wrong crops for their soil. Rabbits have an
annoying habit of taking single bites of vegetable, then leaving the rest to go bad.
可知 此处应选G项 “And even
expert gardeners can lose a season’s harvest to uncooperative weather.
40. F。根据空格上前几句 “The deepest pleasure--as with cooking, writing,bringing up
children or almost anything worthwhile--is in the work itself. A gardener’s memories revolve
not around the food produced, but around long afternoons with hands in the dirt.
即对应F项 “To garden is to
patiently and lovingly help lifegrow, intheground and above it做园艺活就是耐心地和爱护
