In an incredible display of compassion and kindness, a man from Turkey was spotted trying to warm a pigeon
in the most creative way.
Sabahattin Yılmaz was at home one chilly day. After a rain shower had passed, he noticed something landed
on the sill (窗台) outside his window—a cold and wet pigeon. The animal was trembling and soaked; it clearly
didn’t have the chance to seek shelter before the rain began. Feeling for the poor pigeon, Yılmaz thought of a way
to dry him off.
Rather than pick him up and take him inside to warm up, Yılmaz plugged in a hairdryer and used it to dry off
the bird. Little did he know that his neighbor captured the whole moment on video. In the video, Yılmaz can be
seen leaning out of his window. He was stretching his arm as far as he can so the hot air can reach the pigeon. The
bird willingly let the man warm him up, crouching (蹲伏) to let his outer feathers dry.
Yılmaz told the media that he spent about fifteen minutes drying off the bird. He said he had just opened his
window when he saw the pigeon around the corner of the sill. He described it as wet and “about to freeze” from the
cold and rainy weather.
After fifteen minutes, Yılmaz gave the pigeon birdseed, which he ate happily. However, the bird remained wet
still. “I saw that it was still there so I warmed it up again, after the pigeon recovered again, and after eating a good
amount of seed, it flew away,” Yılmaz recalled.
He also didn’t know that he was being recorded at the time and that the video was shared online. He simply
did it out of the kindness of his heart. “The pigeon is a living creature and deserved to continue living, that is why I
did it,” he said.
24. What is the text mainly about?
A. An online video about a pigeon became a hit.
B. A man warmed up a wet and cold pigeon.
C. A man invented a creative way to help birds.
D. A man lives in harmony with a pigeon.
25. What was the bird’s reaction to Sabahattin Yılmaz’s behavior?
A. It was scared and flew away.
B. It was annoyed and refused his help.
C. It was ready to accept his assistance.
D. It was happy to settle in his home.
26. What can we see from the video?

Baby foods on market generally contain too much sugar, causing a source of health concern, a new report by
World Health Organization (WHO) says.
The United Nations specialized agency on public health based the conclusion on an examination by its
European office of about 8, 000 baby food products on shelf between. November 2019 and January 2020. It warns
that the very high level of sugars present in commercial products is a cause for concern. They increase the risk of
overweight and teeth holes while causing a lifetime eating habit in favor of sugary foods.
“In around half of the products examined, more than 30 percent of calories were from total sugars and around
a third of products contained added sugar or other sweetening agents,” the world health body said in the report
released on Monday to update guidelines for babies’ diets. The examination that covered more than 500 stores in
Austria, Bulgaria, Israel and Hungary also finds the labels of up to 60 percent of the inspected food are misleading
consumers by claiming to suit babies under six months old.
In the report, countries are advised to make new laws on controlling high sugar intake, ban added sugars and
sweeteners in baby foods, and put an end to the promotion of breast milk substitutes. It also requires labels on
candies and sweetened drinks, including fruit juices and condensed (压缩) milk, to state they are not suitable for
children under three. Meanwhile, WHO recommends that children between six months and two years be fed
nutrient-rich home-prepared foods.
“WHO has long recommended that babies receive only breast milk for the first six months of life. Good
nutrition in babyhood and early childhood remains the key to ensuring best child growth and development, and to
better health outcomes later in life,” said Zsuzsanna Jakab, WHO regional director for Europe, in a statement.
28. How did WHO get the finding?
A. By testing baby foods’ flavour. B. By examining some baby foods.
C. By monitoring baby foods’ production. D. By conducting an interview about baby foods.
29. What can we know about the 500 stores?
更多资料添加微信号:hiknow_007 淘宝搜索店铺:乐知课堂A. Some of them are selling poor baby foods.
B. They have broken the laws about baby foods.
C. Their baby foods have damaged babies’ health.
D. They are taking action to change the present situation.
30. What is a key to handling the concern?
A. The experts’ guidance. B. The consumers’ cooperation.
C. The stores’ being closed down. D. The government’s involvement.
31. What food does WHO suggest for children under half a year old?
A Condensed milk. B. Fruit juice. C. Breast milk. D. Home-prepared foods.
D
Now the reason cooking has become so popular, especially among men, is that the kitchen is the new
workshop. Deprived(剥夺)of the requirement to practice his hands-on skills in wood or metal, the modern man
turns to the chopping-board worktop instead — previously this was more likely to be the woman’s area. It involves
tools, process and planning, and satisfies a natural desire to produce something.
I like fooling about in the kitchen, to be honest. Last night, tired of too many visits to over-priced restaurants, I
tried to do something a bit clever with meats and vegetables. It was all right, I suppose. I mean, my guest and I both
ate it, but in a slightly awkward sort of way. It was all a bit brown. More to the point, it took hours and hours that
could have been spent on something more constructive, such as mending the cooker. There are also three dead
motorcycles in the garage, and they’re not going to repair themselves. I therefore recommend the “Strength
Through Simplicity” cooking style-the new stage of culinary(烹饪的) progress shall be the garage.
I’m hoping to introduce the idea of garage cooking in a new TV series and, as usual, would welcome any
suggestions; anything suitable for consumption by a man who has one reasonably clean hand and one coated with
machine oil he’d rather not put near his face. This is not, in fact, without precedent(先例) I’ve been in a factory in
India where the workers baked breads on the tops of hot machines, and they somehow tasted better for being a by-
product of industrial effort.
Tonight I’ve had an oil change with a side of chain adjustment accompanied by beans and sausages.
32. According to the author, why are men increasingly interested in cooking?
A. They find it more enjoyable than working in a workshop.
B. They now have fewer opportunities to create things.
C. It is now more socially acceptable for men to cook.
D. Women are generally spending less time cooking.
更多资料添加微信号:hiknow_007 淘宝搜索店铺:乐知课堂33. What does the author think of the meal he prepared last night?
A. He didn’t practice his cooking skill fully.
B. He should have used the restaurant recipe.
C. He could have used the cooking time better.
D. He didn’t receive any encouragement from his guest.
34. What does the author most probably do?
A. A media worker. B. A restaurant critic.
C. A cook. D. An engineer.
35. What does the author want to imply by using the example of India workers?
A. The wisdom of industrial workers has been overlooked.
B. Skills learnt in a factory can be applied in cooking a meal.
C. Food cooked in a garage tastes as delicious as that from a kitchen.
D. Meals have previously been prepared in unusual workplace settings.

第二节 (满分25 分)
67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
It was the late 1930s, and things were tough. Mum had a hard time raising us on her own in our small
community of New Westminster, BC. My dad had drowned in Pitt Lake, five years ago.
Looking back, I realize what Mum went through sending us kids to school. Every morning she would tuck a
new piece of cardboard in our shoes, because our soles(鞋底)were worn out. When we got home, Mum would have
“French toast” ready for us. Constant moving was typical for my family in those times. Rent was 25 dollars a
month, but Mum couldn’t pay it, and we knew we would be evicted right after Christmas on the first of January.
Christmas was approaching, and we were entitled to a twenty-five-dollar Christmas fund from social services.
The inspector came to our house, and searched it from top to bottom to be sure we didn’t have any food hidden
away. When he didn’t find any, he issued the cheque to Mum. Mum said that instead of buying food, she would
use the 25 dollars to pay back rent, assuring us all of a roof over our heads for a little while longer. She told us then
there would be nothing for Christmas.
Unknown to Mum, I had been selling Christmas tree, shoveling snow, and doing odd jobs to earn enough
money to buy a new pair of boots. Boots that weren’t patched, boots with no cardboard in the soles. I knew exactly
which boots I wanted. They were ten-inch Top Genuine Pierre Paris and they had a price of 23 dollars.
Well, the big day came on the afternoon of Christmas Eve. I was excited, as I hurried up the road to the shoe
store, but on the way I noticed a house with Christmas lights and decorations. It was then I realized at our house,
we had no lights, no decorations, nor any money for Christmas goodies. I knew that we would have no turkey or
ham for Christmas, and I felt sad.
