I turned to makeup as a way in which to hide, and out of all the products I could have chosen, I chose the tickets of the thick. Is struggling with acne really the worst thing that can happen? No. But throughout my teenage years, YES. If simply getting up 30 minutes earlier every morning was going to help me feel better and accepted, then of course I was going to do it.Fortunately, after years of trying a variety of acne remedies (治疗), I was able to find a solution, and rarely struggled with my skin since. However, I still find myself applying a layer of makeup every single day. Why? Ultimately, I’ve found that it’s like putting on a mask that gives me power. It’s like a way of telling myself, “OK, I am ready! I can do this!” As one of the best teachers I ever had taught me — “Lippy (lipsticks) on, smile on.” Do the thing that empowers you and makes you happy, and it’ll help you bring your best to every day. Last year, I traveled to the UK to compete in the England Athletics Senior Championships. Lo and behold, the following morning — race day — I went to get my makeup out of bag and it wasn’t there. I’d left it in the Isle of Man! It sounds so silly, but my heart sank. Finally, I knew I was there to do one thing — RACE — be it with make up or without, and in all honesty, no amount of makeup can match the empowerment that comes from knowing the amount of hard work that has been invested and devoted to race hard. It was pouring down with rain, so perhaps it was a good thing in disguise(伪装), and I fortunately went on to have one of my best races of that year. Point proven — makeup helps me feel increasingly energised and positive, but I don’t always need it. 41. What did the author think about wearing makeup during her teenage years? A. Worthwhile. B. Shameful. C. Time-consuming. D. Eye-catching. 42. Why does the author still apply some makeup? A. It has become a habit. B. It makes her stand out. C. It boosts her confidence. D. It helps her manage stress. 43. Why did the author race without makeup in the UK last year? A. It was not allowed. B. She left it somewhere. C. She wanted a change. D. It was pointless in the rain. 44. What does the underlined word “it” in the last paragraph refer to? A. The rain. B. The makeup. C. The race. D. The empowerment. 45. What might be the best title for the text? A. A Battle Won B. Makeup or No Makeup C. Lippy On, Smile On D. An unforgettable race 【答案】41. A 42. C 43. B 44. A 45. BC The baby monkey is much more developed at birth than the human baby. During the first few days of its life the baby monkey will approach and hold onto almost any large, warm, and soft object in its environment, particularly if that object also gives it milk. After a week or so, however, the baby monkey begins to avoid newcomers and focuses its attentions on “mother”— the real mother or the mother-substitute (替代物). During the first two weeks, warmth is perhaps the most important psychological (心理的) thing that a monkey mother has to give to its baby. The Harlows, a couple who are both psychologists, discovered this fact by offering baby monkeys a choice of two types of mother-substitutes — one covered with cloth and one made of bare wire. If the two artificial mothers were both the same temperature, the little monkeys always preferred the cloth mother. Why is cloth preferable to bare wire? Something that the Harlows called contact comfort seems to be the answer. Baby monkeys spend much of their time rubbing against their mothers’ skins. Wire doesn’t “rub” as well as soft cloth does. Prolonged (长时间的) “contact comfort” with a cloth mother appears to give the babies confidence and is much more rewarding to them than either warmth or milk. According to the Harlows, the basic quality of a baby’s love for its mother is trust. If the baby is put into an unfamiliar playroom without its mother, the baby ignores the toys no matter how interesting they might be. If its cloth mother is now introduced into the playroom, the baby rushes to it and holds onto it for dear life. After a few minutes of contact comfort, it obviously begins to feel more secure. Bit by bit its fears of the new environment are gone and it spends more and more time playing with the toys and less and less time holding on to its “mother.” 46. Psychologically, what does the baby monkey desire most during the first two weeks of its life? A. Warmth B. Milk C. Contact D. Trust 47. After the first two weeks of their life, baby monkeys prefer the cloth mother to the wire mother because the former is ________. A. larger in size B. closer to them C. less frightening and less disturbing D. more comfortable to rub against 48. What does the baby monkey probably gain from prolonged “contact comfort”? A. Attention B. Softness C. Confidence D. Interest 49. It can be inferred that when the baby monkey feels secure, ________.A. it frequently rushes back for a deep embrace when exploring the toys B. it spends more time screaming to get rewards C. it is less attracted to the toys though they are interesting D. it cares less about whether its mother is still around 50. The main purpose of the passage is to ________. She gave me the greatest gift a mother can give — the desire to excel (超越). She taught me to read before I was four. She also encouraged me to write. When I was 10, I wrote a story and she sent it to a children’s magazine. They accepted it and paid me some money. So I started earning money by writing at a young age. I also learned a lot from my father. He’d say, “Stand tall, be confident and keep your eyes open.” For what, I don’t know! He was quite good at telling stories, and I think I inherited my gift for storytelling from him. But he could be pretty strict. If I went out with a boy, he had to pick me up from home so my father could question him inside out. My father was 6 feet tall and good-looking, with great charm. He lost a leg in the war while serving in the Royal Navy, but never let it hold him back. When he was in hospital, ready to have his leg amputated, he said, not depressed, “Well, half a loaf is better than none.” After his death, I returned his artificial leg to the hospital, but walked away in tears. It felt as if I was giving part of him away. My parents had a son, Vivian, who died before I was born, so my mother put all her love into me. She also gave me an education I couldn’t get at school. She took me to the pictures every week, to the theatre to see the Russian ballet whenever it came to Leeds, where we lived. At 20, I moved to London to become a fashion editor of Woman’s Own and later a columnist on the London Evening News. The day I left home, my mother wrote in her diary that all the sunshine had gone out of her life when her daughter left home. 根据短文内容完成下列小题。 61. It has thrown light on students’ preferences when it comes to travel experiences. As is presented in the chart, food tourism captures the interest of 20% of students, while a significant majority, 80%, are drawn towards cultural tourism. The reasons can be seen as follows. In today’s globalized world, students are increasingly aware of the importance of understanding diverse cultures and histories. Cultural tourism offers a unique opportunity to immerse oneself in different ways of life, traditions, and historical narratives that textbooks alone cannot fully convey. Furthermore, the charm of cultural tourism lies in its potential for protecting intangible cultural heritage. By visiting historical sites, museums, and participating in local festivals, students contribute to the conservation of these treasures.
