A A week into the stay-at-home order. I longed for connection. But not the kind available from a screen. Inside my wallet I found 10 stamps, and I put out a tweet: “Today I am going to write letters to send through the post. Direct message me your snail mail address if you want a random letter.” On the first day, I wrote to strangers in Arizona, California, Missouri, New York, Texas and Washington. The next day, I wrote to an 11-year-old who was born in Plano, Texas, where I grew up. I wrote to a letter carrier from Minnesota who requested a letter for himself. The 10 stamps ran out quickly, so I restocked. By the time I’d finished sending a letter to anyone who requested one, I’d written over 50 letters to addresses in almost every state. I am “very online”, so it’s obviously much easier to reach far more than one person at a time with a tweet. But the process of sitting down to compose a letter by hand, addressing an envelope and stamping it is filled with extra intention. It feels like a way to show an old-fashioned kind of caring, the kind that can travel the distance and be similar to a hug. I wanted to be frank about signaling the letters came from a real human , and nothing automatic, so finding ways to personalize each one was key. When I ran out of my personal letter paper, I found my four- year-old daughter Isa’s doodles in a notebook and wrote my letters on those pages. I never expected replies. The satisfaction for me was in writing to people and knowing they’d receive something rare. But the replies ended up being the best part. I received dozens of handwritten replies. People wrote to me about how they were spending their time. A lot of letters included wishes for what comes out of this crisis. The one consistent hope was that the attention we’re paying to each other can continue in the next phase of our living history. 1. What can be inferred from Paragraph 2? A. The author had long-standing friends all over America. B. The author selected a stranger in each state to receive a letter. C. The author’s act of sending handwritten letters was well-received. D. The author’s attempts to write to everyone asking for a letter were in vain. 2. How does the author feel about snail mail? A. It enjoys popularity among close friends. B. It gives people a sense of closeness. C. It is really old-fashioned. D. It is relatively inefficient. 3. What was the best part of writing letters to strangers according to the author? A. Receiving constant attention from strangers. B. Getting answers from the recipients. C. Supporting each other during the crisis. D. Writing all the letters by hand. C 2. B 3. 根据第二段中“The 10 stamps ran out quickly, so I restocked. By the time I’d finished sending a letter to anyone who requested one, I’d written over 50 letters to addresses in almost every state.( 这10张邮票很快就用完了,所以我又补充了一些。 根据第三段中“It feels like a way to show an old-fashioned kind of caring, the kind that can travel the distance and be similar to a hug. 根据最后一段中“I never expected replies. The satisfaction for me was in writing to people and knowing they’d receive something rare. But the replies ended up being the best part. All I had to do for the two dollars was clean her house for a few hours after school. It was a beautiful house, too, with a plastic-covered sofa and chairs, wall-to-wall blue-and-white carpeting, a white enamel stove, a washing machine and a dryer—things that were common in her neighborhood, absent in mine. In the middle of the war, she had butter, sugar, steaks, and seam-up-the-back stockings. I knew how to scrub floors on my knees and how to wash clothes in our zinc tub, but I had never seen a Hoover vacuum cleaner or an iron that wasn't heated by fire. Part of my pride in working for her was earning money I could squander (浪费):on movies, candy, paddleballs, jacks, ice-cream cones. But a larger part of my pride was based on the fact that I gave half my wages to my mother, which meant that some of my earnings were used for real things—an insurance-policy payment or what was owed to the milkman or the iceman. The pleasure of being necessary to my parents was profound. I was not like the children in folktales: burdensome mouths to feed, nuisances to be corrected, problems so severe that they were abandoned to the forest. I had a status that doing routine chores in my house did not provide—and it earned me a slow smile, an approving nod from an adult. Confirmations that I was adultlike, not childlike. In those days, the forties, children were not just loved or liked; they were needed. They could earn money; they could care for children younger than themselves; they could work the farm, take care of the herd, run errands(差事), and much more. I suspect that children aren't needed in that way now. They are loved, doted on, protected, and helped. Fine, and yet... Little by little, I got better at cleaning her house—good enough to be given more to do, much more. I was ordered to carry bookcases upstairs and, once, to move a piano from one side of a room to the other. I fell carrying the bookcases. And after pushing the piano my arms and legs hurt so badly. I wanted to refuse, or at least to complain, but I was afraid she would fire me, and I would lose the freedom the dollar gave me, as well as the standing I had at home—although both were slowly being eroded. She began to offer me her clothes, for a price. Impressed by these worn things, which looked simply gorgeous to a little girl who had only two dresses to wear to school, I bought a few. Until my mother asked me if I really wanted to work for castoffs. So I learned to say "No, thank you" to a faded sweater offered for a quarter of a week5s pay. Still, I had trouble summoning (鼓起)the courage to discuss or object to the increasing demands she made. And I knew that if I told my mother how unhappy I was she would tell me to quit. Then one day, alone in the kitchen with my father, I let drop a few whines about the job. I gave him details, examples of what troubled me, yet although he listened intently, I saw no sympathy in his eyes. No "Oh, you poor little 更多资料添加微信号:hiknow_007 淘宝搜索店铺:乐知课堂thing. " Perhaps he understood that what I wanted was a solution to the job, not an escape from it. In any case, he put down his cup of coffee and said, 44Listen. You don't live there. You live here. With your people. Go to work. Get your money. And come on home. ” That was what he said. This was what I heard: Whatever the work is, do it well—not for the boss but for yourself. You make the job; it doesn't make you. Your real life is with us, your family. You are not the work you do; you are the person you are. I have worked for all sorts of people since then, geniuses and morons, quick-witted and dull, big- hearted and narrow. I've had many kinds of jobs, but since that conversation with my father I have never considered the level of labor to be the measure of myself, and I have never placed the security of a job above the value of home. 4. What is the "pleasure" of the author from the sentence "The pleasure of being necessary to my parents was profound. (paragraph 3) " ? A. She was proud as she could earn money for her mother. B. Her own value of being needed. C. She is distinctive from those children in folktales. D. She enjoyed a status of being an adult in her family. 5. According to the article, which of the following is true about children in the 1940s and now? A. Children become needed, loved and liked when they are at forty. B. Children in modern times are less likely to be spoiled by parents. C. Children in 1940s are capable as they can handle various daily routine. D. Children in modern times aren' t needed to do daily works any more. 6. What did the author's father make her understand? A. Don't escape from difficulties at work. B. Whatever decision she made, her father would support her. C. Convey her dissatisfaction with her work. D. Make a distinction between work and life. 7. Which of the following corresponds to the author's views in the passage? A. Don't regard work achievement as a criterion for evaluating oneself. B. Hard work is a struggle for a better future in your limited life. C. Parents are the best teachers of children. D. Job security is less valuable when compared with family. C 5. C 6. D 7. 根据第三段“ I was not like the children in folktales: burdensome mouths to feed, nuisances to be corrected, problems so severe that they were abandoned to the forest.(我不像民间故事中 的孩子那样:有着养家糊口的重担,滋扰需要纠正,问题非常严重以至于他们被森抛弃到森林 里。)”可知,作者不同于那些民间故事中的孩子,更成人化,而非小孩子气,因此可以看出第三 段的“The pleasure of being necessary to my parents was profound.” 根据第四段“In those days, the forties, children were not just loved or liked; they were needed. They could earn money; they could care for children younger than themselves; they could work the farm, take care of the herd, run errands(差事), and much more. I suspect that children aren't needed in that way now. They are loved, doted on, protected, and helped. 根据最后一段“I've had many kinds of jobs, but since that conversation with my father I have never considered the level of labor to be the measure of myself, and I have never placed the security of a job above the value of home. 再结合“You make the job; it doesn't make you. Your real life is with us, your family. You are not the work you do; you are the person you are.(你做工作,不是工作做你。 根据最后一段“I've had many kinds of jobs, but since that conversation with my father I have never considered the level of labor to be the measure of myself, and I have never placed the security of a job above the value of home. A。 C You are given many opportunities in life to choose to be a victim or creator. When you choose to be a victim, the world is a cold and difficult place.“They” did things to you which caused all of your pain and suffering.“They” are wrong and bad, and life is terrible as long as “they” are around.Or you may blame yourself for all your problems, thus internalizing(内化)your victimization. The truth is, your life is likely to stay that way as long as you feel a need to blame yourself or others. Those who choose to be creators look at life quite differently. They know there are individuals who might like to control their lives, but they don't let this get in the way. They know they have their weaknesses, yet they don't blame themselves when they fail.Whatever happens, they have choice in the matter. They believe their dance with each sacred(神圣的)moment of life is a gift and that storms are a natural part of life which can bring the rain needed for emotional and spiritual growth. Victims and creators live in the same physical world and deal with many of the same physical realities, yet their experience of life is worlds apart.Victims relish(沉溺)in anger, guilt, and other emotions that cause others--and even themselves---to feel like victims, too.Creators consciously choose love, inspiration, and other qualities which inspire not only themselves, but al1around them. Both victims and creators always have choice to determine the direction of their lives. In reality, all of us play the victim or the creator at various points in our lives. One person, on losing a job or a special relationship, may feel as if it is the end of the world and sink into terrible suffering for months, years, or even a lifetime.Another with the same experience may choose to first experience the grief, then accept the loss and soon move on to be a powerful creative force in his life. In every moment and every circumstance, you can choose to have fuller, richer life by setting a clear intention to transform the victim within, and by inviting into your life the powerful creator that you are. 8. What does the word “they” in Paragraph 1 probably refer to? A. People and things around you. B. Opportunities and problems. C. Creators and their choices. D. Victims and their sufferings. 9. According to Paragraph 2, creators__________. A. seem willing to experience failures in life B. possess the ability to predict future life C. handle ups and downs of life wisely D. have potential to create something new 10. What is the author's purpose in writing this passage? A. To define victims and creators. B. To evaluate victims against creators. C. To explain the relationship between victims and creators. D. To suggest the transformation from victims to creators. 11. The examples mentioned in Paragraph 4 show that_________. A. strong attachment to sufferings in life pulls people into victims. B. people need family support to deal with challengers in life. C. it takes creators quite a long time to get rid of their pains. D. one's experiences determine his attitude toward life. A 9. C 10. D 11. 根据第一段中“When you choose to be a victim, the world is a cold and difficult place. 故选A项。 根据第二段中“They believe their dance with each sacred(神圣的)moment of life is a gift and that storms are a natural part of life which can bring the rain needed for emotional and spiritual growth. 根据最后一段中“In every moment and every circumstance, you can choose to have fuller, 更多资料添加微信号:hiknow_007 淘宝搜索店铺:乐知课堂richer life by setting a clear intention to transform the victim within, and by inviting into your life the powerful creator that you are. 根据第四段中“Victims and creators live in the same physical world and deal with many of the same physical realities, yet their experience of life is worlds apart. Victims relish(沉溺)in anger, guilt, and other emotions that cause others--and even themselves---to feel like victims, too. 故选A项。 D Some people say that friendship is the only channel through which human beings can ever experience the value of life. In our daily life, it is likely that you share some common interests with others — they may like the same sport, go to the same school or like the same kind of music as you do. Since you often meet them, they become your acquaintances. Although some people develop many acquaintances, only a few become their good friends in their lifetime because there are differences between acquaintances and friends. It is said that true friendship begins when someone knows what you are really like, but still likes you anyway. A true friend shows loyalty from the very beginning of the relationship. A friend will go through challenges to help you without expecting anything in return. A “friend” today may probably become a “true friend” tomorrow when they get involved in unexpected circumstances together with you — for example, when you are going through a difficult experience and your friend is there to help you out. However, some acquaintances might leave you when you badly need their help. At this time, you can experience what true friendship is. In our life, some people seem to go through life with plenty of friends. They may be funny or they may have a bright and pleasant personality. For these people, wherever they go, people seem to like them and welcome their company. But when they go through challenging life experiences, some of their friends are not there to help them. Therefore we can say some of their friends are not real friends and their 更多资料添加微信号:hiknow_007 淘宝搜索店铺:乐知课堂friendship is just skin-deep. However, others seem to go through life with no friends at all. They like to be alone, to travel by themselves or to do their own things. It’s a pity that few of these people find success in life because they have no friends. They lack the best gift in life — friendship. 12. According to the passage, which of the following statements about acquaintances is TRUE? A. They have all of the same interests as you do. B. You seldom meet them in your life. C. They are sure to become your good friends. D. Not all of them can become your friends. 13. According to the passage you may get to know the meaning of friendship better when you ________. A. go to the same school as your friend B. get into trouble C. enjoy the same kind of music as your friend D. see your friend often 14. We know from the passage that ________. A. it doesn’t matter whether one has friends or not B. people with bright personality are easy to have friends C. people without friends are always unhappy D. it’s easier to lose a friend than to get one 15. What does the underlined word “skin-deep” in the third paragraph mean? A. Very deep. B. Not deep at all. C. As precious as skin. D. Hidden under the skin. 16. What’s the writer’s attitude towards people without friends in their life? A. Interested. B. Angry. C. Hopeful. D. Regretful. D 13. B 14. B 15. B 16. Although some people develop many acquaintances, only a few become their 更多资料添加微信号:hiknow_007 淘宝搜索店铺:乐知课堂good friends in their lifetime because there are differences between acquaintances and friends. But when they go through challenging life experiences, some of their friends are not there to help them. Therefore we can say some of their friends are not real friends and their friendship is just skin-deep. It’s a pity that few of these people find success in life because they have no friends. They lack the best gift in life — friendship. ____17____. The sunshine cast beautiful shadows among the leaves. Susan was sitting in the room and doing the weaving(编织)task her grandmother had set, absent-minded. A group of little girls came up to Susan from outside, jumping and talking happily. Rose, her best friend, asked Susan if she would like to play in the woods with them. Susan sighed and refused. After all,she had to finish the job first. The girls argued it must be rather tiresome to stay at home on such a good day. They commented that Susan’s grandmother was too strict. After hearing this,Susan bent her head. As they disappeared in the distance, she could picture what would happen to these little crazy creatures. However, her heart sank, thinking of the crown(皇冠)game—the girls’favorite. She was sure that she would be the queen if she were there. Suddenly,an idea flashed into her mind. Perhaps there might be no harm if she moved the mark Grandmother had put in the stocking(长筒袜). After a while, she told her grandmother that she had made it,her heart beating wildly. Grandmother was shocked, but took the work, surveying it very closely. Then laying great stress on each word, she told Susan it was true, because she had counted twenty turns from the mark. Besides, she believed Susan had never cheated her. “Susan, go and amuse yourself as you like”. Grandma said, gently patting her on the head. Susan’s cheeks turned red,but she rushed out and even forgot to say thanks. The girls were excited and surprised to see Susan join their company. Soon, the woods were bursting with the elves’(小精灵)laughter. Not a moment later,Susan sat on the grass, feeling guilty. She did cheat. When her companions ran about enjoying themselves,Susan wished she were at home admitting her fault. Paragraph 1: Finally, the exciting moment came and all girls decided to make a crown of flowers. ______________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________________ 更多资料添加微信号:hiknow_007 淘宝搜索店铺:乐知课堂______________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________ Paragraph 2: The girls looked at her with surprise. ______________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________ 【答案】 Paragraph 1: Finally, the exciting moment came and all girls decided to make a crown of flowers.
