Conventional wisdom may tell you that a master’s degree from Harvard Business School in the US is the key
to a Fortune 500 job, while the same degree from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, the US,
means a possible career on Wall Street.
It seems that the graduate school you go to somewhat decides your future. A recent New York Times article
reveals the correlation between MBA (Master of Business Administration) graduates at certain US schools and
career prospects.
To work at Amazon
Ross School of Business (University of Michigan)
Amazon regularly hires more MBAs from top 10 business schools than big Wall Street firms. And a large
chunk of American employees are from Ross. Graduate Peter Faricy, vice president of Amazon Marketplace, says
the reason behind this is that Ross’ curriculum-related offerings, a problem-solving course for instance, are
particularly well suited to Amazon.
To work at McKinsey&Company
Kellogg School of Management (Northwestern University)
For an MBA, landing a job at McKinsey is like trying to get into a competitive business school over again.
However, Kellogg graduates perform well in the fiercest competition. The school’s MBAs are in demand at elite
consulting firms, which hired 35 percent of Kellogg graduates last year, a higher percentage than at Harvard (23
percent) and Stanford (16 percent).
To work at Apple
Fuqua School of Business (Duke University)
Silicon Valley hasn’t always welcomed MBAs. However two of Apple’s top 10 executives come from Fuqua.
Apple has hired 32 Fuqua graduates over the past five years, and provided 42 internships for Duke students.
To start your own company
Harvard Business School
The extensive resources Harvard has devoted to its entrepreneurial offerings in recent years are starting to
show real results. By many accounts, it has surpassed Stanford as the top entrepreneurial hot-bed in the US.
11. Which university offers students a course on various approaches to difficulties at work?
A. Harvard Business School B. Ross School of Business
更多资料添加微信号:hiknow_007 淘宝搜索店铺:乐知课堂C. Fuqua School of Business D. Kellogg School of Management
12. According to the passage, which of the following is true?
A. Consulting companies favor MBA students from Kellogg.
B. To work at Apple, MBA graduates have an advantage.
C. Stanford produces the greatest number of business leaders.
D. Wall Street employs more MBAs from top 10 than Amazon.
13. If you want to work in the area of hi-tech electronic products, you may choose to study in_______.
A. Ross School of Business B. Harvard Business School

Everyone gathered around and Paddy read out loud, slowly, his tone growing sadder and sadder. The little
headline said: BOXER RECEIVES LIFF SENTENCE.
Frank Cleary, aged 26, professional boxer, was today found guilty of the murder of Albert Gumming, aged 32,
laborer, last July. The jury (陪审团) reached its decision after only ten minutes, recommending the most severe
punishment to the court. It was, said the Judge, a simple case. Gumming and Cleary had quarreled violently at the
Harbour Hotel on July 23rd and police saw Cleary kicking at the head of the unconscious Gumming. When
arrested, Cleary was drunk but clear-thinking.
Cleary was sentenced to life imprisonment with hard labour. Asked if he had anything to say, Cleary answered,
“Just don’t tell my mother.”
“It happened over three years ago,” Paddy said helplessly. No one answered him or moved, for no one knew
what to do. “Just don’t tell my mother,” said Fee numbly(麻木地). “And no one did! Oh, God! My poor, poor
Frank!”
Paddy wiped the tears from his face and said. “Fee, pack your things. We’ll go to see him.”
She half-rose before sinking back, her eyes in her small white face stared as if dead. “I can’t go,” she said
without a hint of pain, yet making everyone feel that the pain was there. “It would kill him to see me. I know him
so well — his pride, his ambition. Let him bear the shame alone, it’s what he wants. We’ve got to help him keep his
secret. What good will it do him to see us?”
Paddy was still weeping, not for Frank, but for the life which had gone from Fee’s face, for the dying in her
eyes. Frank had always brought bitterness and misfortune, always stood between Fee and himself. He was the cause
of her withdrawal from his heart and the hearts of his children. Every time it looked as if there might be happiness
for Fee, Frank took it away. But Paddy’s love for her was as deep and impossible to wipe out as hers was for Frank.
So he said, “Well, Fee, we won’t go. But we must make sure he is taken care of. How about if I write to Father
更多资料添加微信号:hiknow_007 淘宝搜索店铺:乐知课堂Jones and ask him to look out for Frank?”
There was no excitement in the eyes, but a faint pink stole into her cheeks. “Yes, Paddy, do that. Only make
sure he knows not to tell Frank we found out. Perhaps it would ease Frank to think for certain that we don’t know.”
14. Paddy cried because he thought ___________.
A. Frank did kill someone and deserved the punishment
B. Frank should have told Fee what had happened
C. what had happened to Frank was killing Fee
D. Frank had always been a man of bad moral character
15. The underlined sentence “She half-rose before sinking back…”in Paragraph 6 shows that___________.
A. Fee was so heart-broken that she could hardly stand up
B. Fee didn’t want to upset Paddy by visiting Frank
C Fee couldn’t leave her family to go to see Frank
D. Fee struggled between wanting to see Frank and respecting his wish
16. What can be inferred from the passage?
A. The jury and the judge agreed on the Boxer’s Sentence of Life Imprisonment.
B. The police found Gumming unconscious, heavily struck by Frank.
C. The family didn’t find out what had happened to Frank until 3 years later.
D. Frank didn’t want his family to know the sentence to him, most probably out of his pride.
17. What is Frank and Paddy’s probable relationship with Fee?
A. Frank is Fee’s son and Paddy is Fee’s brother.
B. Frank is Fee’s son and Paddy is Fee’s husband.
C. Frank is Fee’s brother and Paddy is Fee’s lover.
D. Frank is Fee’s lover and Paddy is Fee’s husband.
C.
After years of observing human nature, I have decided that two qualities make the difference between men of
great achievement and men of average performance curiosity and discontent. I have never known an outstanding
man who lacked either. And I have never known an average man who had both. The two belong together.
Together, these deep human urges (驱策力) count for much more that ambition. Galileo was not merely
ambitious when he dropped objects of varying weights from the Leaning Tower at Pisa and timed their fall to the
ground. Like Galileo, all the great names in history were curious and asked in discontent, “Why? Why? Why?”
Fortunately, curiosity and discontent don’t have to be learned. We are born with them and need only recapture
them.
“The great man,” said Mencius (孟子), “is he who does not lose his child’s heart.” Yet most of us do lose it.
更多资料添加微信号:hiknow_007 淘宝搜索店铺:乐知课堂We stop asking questions. We stop challenging custom. We just follow the crowd. And the crowd desires restful
average. It encourages us to occupy our own little corner, to avoid foolish leaps into the dark, to be satisfied.
Most of us meet new people, and new ideas, with hesitation. But once having met and liked them, we think
how terrible it would have been, had we missed the chance. We will probably have to force ourselves to waken our
curiosity and discontent and keep them awake.
How should you start? Modestly, so as not to become discouraged. I think of one friend who couldn’t arrange
flowers to satisfy herself. She was curious about how the experts did it. How she is one of the experts, writing
books on flower arrangement.
One way to begin is to answer your own excuses. You haven’t any special ability? Most people don’t; there are
only a few geniuses. You haven’t any time? That’s good, because it’s always the people with no time who get things
done. Harriet Stowe, mother of six, wrote parts of Uncle Tom’s Cabin while cooking. You’re too old? Remember
that Thomas Costain was 57 when he published his first novel, and that Grandma Moses showed her first pictures
when she was 78.
However you start, remember there is no better time to start than right now, for you’ll never be more alive than
you are at this moment.
18. In writing Paragraph 1, the author aims to ________.
A. propose a definition B. make a comparison
C. reach a conclusion D. present an argument
19. What does the example of Galileo tell us?
A. Trial and error leads to the finding of truth. B. Scientists tend to be curious and ambitious.
C. Creativity results from challenging authority. D. Greatness comes from a lasting desire to explore.
20. What can you do to recapture curiosity and discontent?
A. Observe the unknown around you. B. Develop a questioning mind.
C. Lead a life of adventure. D. Follow the fashion.
21. What can we learn from Paragraphs 6 and 7?
A. Gaining success helps you become an expert.
B. The genius tends to get things done creatively.
C. Lack of talent and time is no reason for taking no action.
D. You should remain modest when approaching perfection.
D.
First two hours, now three hours—this is how far in advance authorities are recommending people show up to
catch a domestic flight, at least at some major U.S. airports with increasingly massive security lines.
更多资料添加微信号:hiknow_007 淘宝搜索店铺:乐知课堂Americans are willing to tolerate time-consuming security protocols in return for increased safety. The crash
of Egypt Air Flight 804, which terrorists may have downed over the Mediterranean Sea, provides another tragic
reminder of why. But demanding too much of air travelers or providing too little security in return undermines
public support for the process. And it should: Wasted time is a drag on Americans' economic and private lives, not
to mention making people angry.
Last year, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) found in a secret check that undercover
investigators were able to sneak weapons — both fake and real — past airport security nearly every time they tried.
Enhanced security measures since then, combined with a rise in airline travel due to the improving economy and
low oil prices, have resulted in long waits at major airports such as Chicago's O'Hare International. It is not yet
clear how much more effective airline security has become — but the lines are obvious.
Part of the issue is that the government did not anticipate the steep increase in airline travel so the TSA is now
rushing to get new screeners on the line. Part of the issue is that airports have only so much room for screening
lanes. Another factor may be that more people are trying to overpack their carry-on bags to avoid checked-baggage
fees, though the airlines strongly dispute this.
There is one step the TSA could take that would not require remodeling airports or rushing to hire: Enroll
more people in the PreCheck program. PreCheck is supposed to be a win-win for travelers and the TSA. Passengers
who pass a background check are qualifies to use expedited (加速的) screening lanes. This allows the TSA to focus
on travelers who are higher risk, saving time for everyone involved. TSA wants to enroll 25 million people in
PreCheck.
It has not gotten anywhere close to that, and one big reason is sticker shock: Passengers must pays 85 every
five years to process their background checks. Since the beginning, this price tag has been PreCheck's fatal flaw.
Upcoming reforms might bring the price to a more reasonable level. But Congress should look into doing so
directly, by helping to finance PreCheck enrollment or to cut costs in other ways.
The TSA cannot continue diverting resources into underused PreCheck lanes while most of the traveling
public suffers in unnecessary lines. It is long past time to make the program work.
22. The crash of Egypt Air Flight 804 is mentioned to .
A. stress the urgency to strengthen security worldwide
B. highlight the necessity of upgrading major U.S. airports
C. explain American's tolerance of current security checks
D. emphasize the importance of privacy protection
23. Which of the following contributes to long waits at major airports?
A. Frequent unexpected secret checks.
更多资料添加微信号:hiknow_007 淘宝搜索店铺:乐知课堂B. New restrictions on carry-on bags.
C. The declining efficiency of the TSA.
D. An increase in the number of travellers.
24. One problem with the PreCheck program is .
A. a dramatic reduction of its scale
B. its wrongly-directed implementation
C. govemment’s reluctance to back it
D. an unreasonable price for enrollment
25. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?
A. Less Screening for More Safety
B. PreCheck-a Belated Solution
C. Getting Stuck in Security Line
D. Underused PreCheck Lanes
Take back control
There are times in life when nothing seems to go to plan. The trip you were looking forward to is called off,
your house sale falls through, and you haven't exercised in three weeks. All of these things have happened to me
and, on occasion, at the same time.____26____ Either that, or you end up giving up and feeling like your life is
always going to be full of problems.
So, how do you keep your calm in testing times, but also hold it together for long enough to pull yourself out?
Contrary to what you may think, I'm a believer in giving in to how you're feeling, at least for a
moment.____27____
But how do you turn things around? The first thing I do is write everything down. I draw a line down the
middle of a page. On the left, I write down all the things that are stressing me out. On the right, I write down
everything that needs to be done to fix these problems. Then, I look at the list and I cross out all the points over
which I have no control.____28____ Next, I write down the possible actions against each point on the list. Finally,
I force myself into taking action by picking up the phone and asking someone for help;____29____ After all, a
problem shared is a problem halved.
In my experience, the easiest way to keep calm is to regain control of your situation. When we feel out of
control, we fall into a downward cycle, and taking back control stops this.
____30____ Finally, I remind myself of an age-old truth: this too shall pass.
A. I focus on the things that I can do something about.
B. We can think and worry about many things at the same time.
更多资料添加微信号:hiknow_007 淘宝搜索店铺:乐知课堂C. And the moment we start doing, we move away from thinking.
D. I always find that this simple act makes me fix things quicker.
E. The truth is, it's hard not to lose control of yourself in these moments.
F. Better to fall into it, accept the situation for what it is, then get back on your feet and go again.
G. No matter how bad things are, keeping your calm will always help you find a better outcome.

72. 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
A little boy selling magazines for school walked up to a house that people rarely visited. The house was very
old and shabby and the owner hardly ever came out. When he did come out, he would not say hello to his
neighbors or passers-by but simply just glare at them.
The boy knocked on the door and waited, sweating from fear of the old man. The boy’s parents told him to
stay away from the house, and a lot of the other neighborhood children were told the same thing from their parents.
As he was ready to walk away, the door slowly opened. “What do you want?” the old man said impatiently.
The little boy was very afraid but he had a quota(份额) to meet for school with selling the magazines. So he got
up the courage and said, “Uh, sir, I am selling these magazines and uh, I was wondering if you would like to buy
one from me.”
The old man just stared at the boy without a word. The boy could see inside the old man’s house and saw that
he had dog figurines(小雕像) on the fireplace mantle. “Do you collect dogs?” The little boy asked. “Yes, I have
many collections in my house. They are my family here and they are all I have.” The boy then felt sorry for the
man, as it seemed that he was a very lonely soul.
“Well, I do have a magazine here for collectors. It is perfect for you. I also have one about dogs since you like
dogs so much.” The old man was ready to close the door on the boy and said, “No, boy. I don’t need any magazines
of any kind, now goodbye.”
The little boy was sad that he was not going to make his quota with the sale. He was also sad for the old man
being so alone in the house that he owned. The boy went home and then had an idea. He had a little dog figurine
that he got some years ago from an aunt. The figurine did not mean nearly as much to him since he had a real live
