【原文】M: Hello, I’m Jeff Anderson from Coventry, England. And in today’s program, I’d like to share with
you a special kind of English culture — the football. A lot of people in England are crazy about football. During
the football season whenever there is a big match, all the flags for local football teams, such as Liverpool and
Newcastle, are hung outside every window, or even spread proudly on T-shirts or scarves. There is an atmosphere
of excitement in the air. Groups of young men crowd into dark, packed pubs staring at television screens. Of course
they are covered head to toe in the colors of their team. They shout and scream in sadness when their team loses a
goal, or with joy when there is a moment of success. You do not have to be a fan of football to get caught up in the
excitement. As far as victories are concerned, England had its big moment in 1966 in Wembley Stadium. The
World Cup victory is in the hearts and minds of all football fans. Now, whenever England is playing a big match,
red and white covers every inch of every pub, a symbol of hope — the English flag. While football has never been
something I am particularly interested in, for years, I’ve had to pretend excitement and pick a team to support. You
cannot say you don’t like or do not follow football in England, as often this would lead to a long dialogue in which
someone would begin telling you why you should support their team.

Music, as a universal language, involves diverse styles that reflect cultural richness and human emotions.
What makes it fascinating is how each style carries its unique history and characteristics. Below are four influential
music forms that have shaped global culture.
Classical music, created by well-known composers like Mozart and Beethoven, has stood the test of time.
What makes classical music special is its complex harmonies and strict musical forms. It can transport listeners to a
different era, filled with elegance. Listening to a symphony orchestra (交响乐团) perform a classical piece, you’ll

Its appeal lies in the fact that it’s easy to sing along to and often reflects the current trends and emotions of society.
With its lively rhythms, pop music is perfect for dancing and enjoying at parties.
Rock music, known for its powerful beats and electrifying guitar riffs, emerged in the 1950s. What sets rock
music apart is its rebellious spirit and high-energy performances. Artists like The Beatles and Led Zeppelin have
left a lasting mark on the history of rock music. Headbanging to the strong rhythm of rock, fans express their
passion and individuality.
Hip-hop music, which originated in African American communities, features rhythmic rapping and powerful
beats. What makes hip-hop unique is its emphasis on lyricism and the ability to tell stories. It has become a global
cultural phenomenon, with artists using their words to address social issues and share their life experiences.

Lucy Larcom was one of the most famous and beloved poets in America. When she was seven years old, her
father died unexpectedly. To support the big family of 10 children, her mother decided to move to Lowell where
cotton mills (纱厂) provided jobs for thousands of young women and for girls as young as ten years old. At first,
Lucy was excited since helping to support her family made her feel grown up. Moreover, she disliked her school at
that time. Yet working at the mill was harder than Lucy had ever imagined. She had to work fourteen hours a day in
the dirty and hot environment, and the big extremely loud spinning (纺纱) machines hurt her ears and wore out her
nerves.
At the end of her first year in Lowell, she got a break from the mill because all children under the age of
thirteen were required to attend school for at least three months each year. Then she found the joy of learning. Lucy
made great progress in her lessons and dreamt of leaving her mill-girl days behind to attend high School. However,
her family needed her wages. So she returned to the hated mill, disappointed but not defeated. She would go back
to school again someday, Lucy told herself.
Determined to continue her education any way she could, Lucy cut articles from newspapers and attached
them to the window next to her spinning machine for reading. Lucy also borrowed books on different subjects from
the Lowell library. She especially loved poetry books, and soon she began creating her own poems.
Finally, Lucy left the mill and signed up in what was like a women’s college. She earned her school fees by
teaching less advanced students. Later, Lucy founded a literary society. Her poetry began to appear in newspapers
and magazines. By the time Lucy died in 1893, she had published fifteen volumes of poetry and other books.
24. Why did Lucy’s mother decide to move to Lowell?
A. To honor her husband. B. To get Lucy educated.
C. To be with all her children. D. To feed her family.
25. What was the possible cause of Lucy’s interest in learning?

We humans have to be careful about how much sugar we take in because diets rich in sugar probably
contribute to some diseases. However this isn’t the case for fruit bats that feed on fruit.
This spring, Wei Gordon, a biologist at Menlo College, accidentally found fruit bats’ ability to handle sugar.
She observed the fruit bats searched up to 800 flowers every night and ate as much sugar as their body weight.
Their blood sugar levels rose sharply. Within half an hour, though, the fruit bats could pretty much bring their sugar
levels back to where they started.
To learn more about how fruit bats manage their sugar, Gordon set out to compare fruit bats to bats that eat
insects, a diet that’s rich in protein but low in sugar. She focused on two organs which looked different between the
two kinds of bats. Gordon carefully compared the cells and genes (基因) of those organs. “And what was really
exciting is that in fruit bats,” she says, “I did see much more cells that are responsible for maintaining the blood
sugar.”
Besides, Gordon found that the fruit bats had genetic differences that seemed to allow them to act quickly to
control the blood sugar coursing through their bloodstream. “The genes were sort of ready to produce insulin (胰岛
素) as soon as it was needed,” says Gordon.
The results were published last month in the journal Nature Communications. Gordon says that one day, such
features of fruit bats might teach us how to help people regulate their sugar levels to avoid some diseases.
Now Gordon is working to find out which molecules (分子) the fruit bats are using to regulate their blood
sugar. And she is curious about how the fruit bats protect their bodies from the kind of damage to their cells and
DNA that usually comes from digesting a lot of sugar.
28. What did Gordon find by accident about fruit bats?
A. They can control their blood sugar levels. B. They can change their body weight.
C. They act strangely at night. D. They need to consume less sugar at night.
29. In which aspect were the fruit bats different from other bats in Gordon’s study?
A. The blood sugar levels. B. The body size.
C. Physical appearance. D. Eating habits.
第 10页/共 25页30. What does the last paragraph mainly talk about?
A. Gordon’s doubts about her findings. B. Gordon’s concerns about fruit bats.
C. Gordon’s current research work. D. Gordon’s motivation behind her study.
31. In which section of a newspaper may this text appear?
A. Entertainment. B. Health. C. Education. D. Business.

Cupping (拔火罐) is an alternative treatment which uses suction (抽吸) to increase blood flow and potentially
reduce pain. As well as getting cupping done by a professional, there’s a growing range of at-home cupping devices
now available, ranging from silicon cups to smart electronic powered devices. They claim to offer the benefits at
home — helping with pain reduction, increased circulation and relaxation.
Cupping has been practiced for thousands of years, traced back to ancient Chinese and Egyptian medicine.
Recently, cupping has become famous as a form of alternative medicine, thanks to the red marks it can leave and
celebrity fans like Jennifer Aniston.
Glass, plastic or silicon cups are placed onto the skin for several minutes creating suction on localized areas. It’
s thought this encourages blood flow to improve circulation and reduce pain, although there is no firm proof on
how it works and no single theory can explain the full effects of cupping.
While it’s popular, there’s only limited scientific evidence on the benefits of cupping. A study in 2023 found it
can be useful to decrease pain levels and improve blood flow to affected areas with low negative effects.
“The suction also causes smaller capillaries (毛细血管) in the skin to rupture, causing the circular bruising
(瘀伤), keeping the body in repair mode as the body has to repair these small capillaries and continue fresh blood
flow to the area days after the treatment,” says Dr Tom Ingegno, an acupuncturist (针灸师) and author of The
Cupping Book: Unlocking the Secret of Ancient healing.
Cupping has low risk, but it’s not suitable for everyone, especially pregnant people, cancer patients and those
with organ failure.
Sports performance coach Arj Thiruchelvam believes that cupping does have a place, but it should be used as
an addition to other methods. “Sleep, nutrition, light cardiovascular work and regular stretching all seem to have a
more solid evidence-base for recovery,” he says.
32. What can we learn about cupping from the first two paragraphs?
A. It is unique to the Chinese culture. B. It is accepted by famous people.
C. It can only be practiced by a doctor. D. It helps reduce blood flow.
33. What does the underlined word “rupture” mean in paragraph 5?
A. Heal. B. Form. C. Break. D. Shrink.
34. What does Arj Thiruchelvam think of cupping as a treatment?
第 12页/共 25页A. It is suitable for organ repair. B. It should be used to assist other treatments.
C. It is not effective for sportsmen. D. It can not be replaced by other treatments.
35. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A To introduce the cupping treatment. B. To collect different opinions on cupping.
C. To advise people to protect traditional medicine. D. To advertise different cupping devices.

To me, touring a garden is almost as great as working in one. It’s a wonderful escape from the busy world.
However, over-planning adds stress. So, relax! ____36____ Here are my top five tips for planning a garden visit.
____37____ Many garden destinations will look great year-round, but it’s always a good idea to find out the
best season before your visit. If the garden has a strong collection of a certain type of flowering plant, you’ll
probably want to be there to see those in bloom. Some gardens have seasonal shutdowns or reduced hours
sometimes in the year, so be sure to find that out.
Choose wisely. ____38____ Guide books, tourism websites and, especially, the staff at your primary garden
destination can point you toward some less-known beautiful gardens.
Learn the history. Expand the enjoyment of your visit by researching the history of the garden and those that
played a critical role in its development and design. ____39____ Many garden trips are once-in-a-lifetime journeys,
so I am all for anything that will extend the experience.
Relax. I have learned not to over-schedule, a hard habit to break. ____40____ In the city, I like to pick a
walking route through parks and gardens and then I eagerly turn to another direction without much concern. In the
country, I like to ask garden staff for recommended natural areas. I leave myself all day to explore and allow
sufficient time for extra discoveries.
A. Consider the season.
B. Check plant bloom time.
C. Make a short must-see list and be flexible.
D. Many of my favorite gardens aren’t the biggest names around.

【导语】这是一篇说明文。文章主要提出了花园之旅的五大建议。
【36 题详解】
根据上文“To me, touring a garden is almost as great as working in one. It’s a wonderful escape from the busy
world. However, over-planning adds stress. So, relax!(对我来说,游览花园几乎和在花园里工作一样棒。这是逃
第 14页/共 25页离繁忙世界的绝佳方式。然而,过度计划会增加压力。所以,放松点!)”以及后文“Here are my top five tips

sometimes in the year, so be sure to find that out.(许多花园目的地全年都很漂亮,但在你去之前找出最好的季

符合语境,故选 F。
【40 题详解】
根据上文“Relax. I have learned not to over-schedule, a hard habit to break.(放松。我已经学会了不要安排过多
的时间,这是一个很难改掉的习惯)”以及后文“In the city, I like to pick a walking route through parks and
gardens and then I eagerly turn to another direction without much concern. In the country, I like to ask garden staff
for recommended natural areas. I leave myself all day to explore and allow sufficient time for extra discoveries.(在
第 15页/共 25页城市里,我喜欢选择一条穿过公园和花园的步行路线,然后毫不在意地急切地转向另一个方向。在乡下,

【答案】范文
A Special Gift for Mom
On Women’s Day, I decided to surprise Mum with a handwritten letter. What made it unique was a dried red
rose attached inside, symbolizing her beauty and strength. Waking up at dawn, I placed it on her pillow, hoping she’
d read it before work.
The letter was decorated with our favorite quotes. “Your love is my compass,” she whispered curiously the
moment she rose. Carefully, mom unfolded the letter, and my words, filled with love and gratitude, came into her
view. After reading quietly, she embraced me tightly, as if holding the most precious thing in the world. “This is the
most cherished and unforgettable gift I’ve ever received,” she murmured, her voice thick with emotion.
A Special Gift for Mom
On International Women’s Day, I decided to give Mom a special gift. I woke up early and secretly tidied the
living room, putting everything in order. Then I made a simple breakfast of sandwiches and milk.
When Mom saw the clean room and the breakfast, she was so surprised and happy that her eyes were filled
with tears. She gave me a big hug, saying it was the best gift ever.
This small act made me realize that showing love doesn’t have to be grand. A little effort can bring so much
joy to our loved ones.

Grandma called me in from the yard. “Would you please go to the store for me? I’m ready to bake bread, and
there isn’t enough yeast (酵母). Take a quarter from my little change purse.”
I found Grandma’s purse, put the quarter in my pocket and was soon in the little general store that served our
farming community.
“Mr Jenkins,” I said, “Grandma needs some yeast.”
Mr Jenkins set three cakes of yeast on the counter. His eyes flashed, and he smiled at me. “And what do you
need?”
I knew what he meant. I was always allowed to pick a penny candy when I came to the store with Grandma.
But Grandma wasn’t here, and she hadn’t said anything about spending a penny.
“How much change do I have from a quarter?” I asked.
“Seven cents,” Mr Jenkins replied. “The yeast is six cents a cake.”
I thought that over quickly. I would have a nickel (五分镍币) and two pennies back. I was sure Grandma
wouldn’t care if I spent one penny, and if she were here, she might even say I could have them both. The longer I
stared at the candy display, the more certain I became that I needed two pennies’ worth as a reward for coming to
the store alone.
As Mr Jenkins handed me the candy and the nickel, a twinge (刺痛) inside me said this was really a dishonest
thing to do. That wasn’t my money, and I hadn’t asked if I might spend it. Nevertheless, I put the nickel in my
pocket and started home.
第 23页/共 25页“Thank you,” Grandma said when I laid the yeast on the table. “Did you put the change back in my purse?”
“Yes, Grandma,” I replied, hurrying out to the porch (门廊). I hadn’t really lied to Grandma, I argued with
myself. I did put back all the change I had.
But I had spent two pennies without permission. The second piece of candy in my pocket didn’t sound like a
good idea anymore. I knew I had tricked Grandma, and I was unhappy about it.

【答案】
Later that morning Uncle Roy came to the house for a glass of cold tea and as he sat down beside me on the
steps he kept watching me carefully. He then asked me what I had done that morning and said there seemed to be
something on my mind. “If there’s something you should tell your grandma, I’d advise you to get busy and do it.”
He laughed quietly as he got up to leave. “Chances are she knows about it anyway, and the kinder she is to you, the
more unhappy you’ll be.”
I watched Uncle Roy leave and then made a decision. He was right. Grandma loved me so much that I couldn’
t bear to keep anything from her. While Grandma took the hot bread from the oven. I told her about the candy. She
nodded when I finished my story. “I know just how you feel,” she said. “We all feel like that when we’ve done
something in a dishonest way. I’m glad you told me about the pennies, and of course I’ll forgive you.” Grandma
hugged me close, and suddenly I felt greatly easier in my mind.
