I didn’t like math at school so I never got good results, but sports were different. So now I work for Electra, a
company selling computer games. My first job after leaving school was in a bike shop. Then, I decided to go to
college and study engineering, but I soon gave that up because I couldn’t get enthusiastic about it. After that, I got a
job working in a frozen food company. People there seemed to like the way I worked, as later they offered me the
job of sales manager. I really enjoyed my time there and I managed to increase its sales greatly by improving
customer service. I stayed with them for ten years before joining Electra. I started working with the staff of Electra,
showing them how to deal with the customers. Then I was promoted to training organizer for the US. Now I’m here
in the UK and I’m the general manager. Although we haven’t introduced any new products yet, our sales figures
show growth due to increased TV advertising. We opened six new stores last year and although I’m busy, I enjoy
feeling I’m part of the company’s success story.

Director Noah Baumbach has surrounded George Clooney’s title character with some heavyweight supporting
talent — Laura Dern, Billy Crudup, Adam Sandler and Patrick Wilson among others — but the film is all Clooney’s
from start to finish. It’s about a movie star in his 60s who’s suave, relaxed, always seems to be playing himself, and
gives off a definite Cary Grant vibe —who is, in short, a lot like George Clooney. — Bob Mondello
The Woman in Cabin 10, Oct. 10
Keira Knightley stars in the Netflix adaptation of Ruth Ware’s thriller about a travel writer who finds herself
trapped on a fancy yacht where something is very wrong. Specifically, she is certain a passenger was thrown
overboard in the middle of the night, but no one seems to be missing. Ware just published a sequel called The
Woman in Suite 11(and both books are a lot of fun), so if this goes over well, expect to see Knightley back in
this role before long. — Linda Holmes

The story of how coffee was discovered is enveloped in legend, with the most popular tale originating from
Ethiopia. The story goes that around the 9th century, a goat herder named Kaldi noticed his goats behaving
unusually. They were dancing energetically and refused to sleep after eating red berries from a certain bush.
Curious, Kaldi tried the berries himself. To his amazement, he felt a wave of energy and alertness. He reported
his finding to a local monastery (修道院). A monk, doubtful of the “magic” berries, threw them into a fire.
However, a rich aroma soon filled the air. The roasted beans were quickly rescued, ground up, and dissolved in hot
water, creating the first-ever cup of coffee.
From Ethiopia, coffee traveled across the Red Sea to the Arab world, particularly Yemen, in the 15th century.
Here, it became a staple (主要产品). People began cultivating coffee plants and established the first coffee houses,
called “qahveh khaneh”. These places became popular social centers where people discussed politics, played chess,
and enjoyed music while drinking the stimulating beverage. The Arabs closely guarded their valuable coffee beans,
often boiling or partially roasting them to prevent being planted elsewhere.
Coffee finally reached Europe in the 17th century. Initially met with doubt and even called “the bitter
invention of Satan”, it needed the Pope’s approval to become acceptable. After tasting it, the Pope found it so
satisfying that he gave it his blessing. Later, Coffee houses spread like wildfire across London, Venice, and Paris,
becoming centers of intellectual exchange and social activity, much like they were in the Middle East. This was the
beginning of coffee’s global journey, eventually making it one of the world’s most beloved drinks today.
24. According to the legend, how was the effect of coffee first discovered?
A. A goat herder observed its effect on his goats.
B. A monk accidentally created it while praying.
C. The Pope tasted it and gave it his blessing.
D. Arab traders found it by chance during their travels.
25. According to the passage, how did the Arabs protect their coffee bean supply?
A. By making coffee drinking a religious secret.B. By forbidding the common people to cultivate coffee beans.
C. By building walls around their coffee farms to guard coffee beans.
D. By selling only boiled or partially roasted coffee beans to foreigners.
26. What can be inferred about the Europeans’ role in the history of coffee?
A. They were the first to establish coffee houses.
B. They played a vital role in beginning coffee’s global journey.
C. They used coffee mainly for religious ceremonies.
D. They supported coffee export through making related policies.
27. Which of the following is the best title for the passage?
A. The Role of Arabs in Coffee History

C. The Legendary Discovery of Coffee and its Health Benefits
D. From Ethiopian Legend to Global Drink: The Story of Coffee

Mini suits pants, hanfu, Victorian dresses — these aren’t children’s clothes nor costumes, but “doll outfits”
that young Chinese adults collect for their figurines (手办).
From Disney’s LinaBell to Pop Mart’s Labubu, each popular character has become a fashion icon, igniting
what consumers now call the “doll-dress economy”. Once a niche hobby, the trend is booming into a strong
direction of youth consumption.
Labubu, part of Pop Mart International Group’s blind-box celebrity characters, has become a breakout success
across China and around the world. Known for their “unboxing surprise” appeal, the characters have caused a spin-
off (衍生品) industry in miniature fashion — knit headbands a few centimetres wide, denim jackets just a
handspan long, and even tiny leather backpacks. Fans have curated closets to personalize their figures, often
treating them as companions.
Search “Labubu doll clothes” on major e-commerce platforms and thousands of shops pop up. Basics such as
plaid skirts or hoodies go for 16-40 yuan ($2-5), mid-tier embroidered hanfu or lined coats are sold for 100-200
yuan, while high-end limited pieces or replicas of celebrity costumes can exceed 200 yuan. Collectors willingly pay
for scarcity and exclusivity.
For Sharon Han, a 30-year-old office worker in Beijing, doll fashion is about more than clothing the mini
companions. “Dressing them and caring for them gives me a sense of ownership,” she said. “They can even matchmy bags and my dressing styles.”
The surge reflects the power of “emotional value”.
“Doll clothes embody this — they’re stress-relief toys, social icebreakers and emotional anchors,” Han said,
adding that she quickly finds community through her hobby.
Behind the craze is the country’s flexible supply chain, capacity in churning out rapid, small-batch
customization (定制). That makes doll fashion a new growth means for traditional clothes firms stuck in cruel
competition.
28. What does the underlined word “igniting” in paragraph 2 most probably mean?
A. Possessing. B. Postponing. C. Stimulating. D. Changing.
29. According to the passage, which type of Labubu doll clothing is likely to be the most expensive?
A. A rare, limited-edition jacket.
B. A mass-produced pair of jeans.
C. A common hoodie with a popular character print.
D. An embroidered hanfu from the mid-tier collection.
30. From what Sharon Han says, the main driving force behind the “doll-dress economy” is ________.
A. The low price and high quality of the doll clothes.
B. The emotional value that the hobby provides to owners.
C. The successful marketing strategies of companies like Disney.
D. The desire of people to show off their wealth through collections.
31. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. The supply chain for doll clothes is slow and inefficient.
B. The doll clothes industry is facing cutthroat competition.
C. Traditional clothes firms are unwilling to produce doll clothes.
D. The trend benefits from and also fuels China’s manufacturing capabilities.
【答案】28. C 29. A 30. B 31. D

Slouching (懒散坐姿) is traditionally considered to be a “bad” posture — with some claiming it will damage
your spine and cause pain.
The great news is that in the past two decades, there’s been a lot of clinical studies conducted which have
concluded that there’s no relationship between slouching and spinal pain. There’s also no evidence that people who
slouch are more likely to suffer with back or neck pain compared to non-slouchers.There’s also no clear evidence that slouching while sitting at your desk or while using your phone causes
damage to the spine. Even the UK government’s latest guidance on working with screens puts less emphasis on an
idealized posture at the workstation.
Instead, they emphasize the importance of adopting comfortable positions, varying your positions, avoiding
awkward positions (such as flexing or arching your back or neck) and including regular breaks from your static
posture throughout the day. All of these tips will help reduce the risk of developing pain and muscle fatigue (疲劳).
There’s a pretty good reason why slouching doesn’t damage our spines, and that is because our spines are
designed to allow movements as diverse as Olympic weightlifting to limbo dancing.
But there is one area where slouching may have a negative effect. Slouching has been linked to poorer
information and memory recall, as well as worse mood when compared to sitting upright. These memory and mood
problems are shown to be rapidly improved when moving from a slouched to erect posture.
So if you’re a sloucher, rest assured that it isn’t really bad for you and is as good as any other posture you
adopt. Comfortable postures are safe and sitting is not dangerous.
Overall, the human spine is designed to be on the move rather than static in one posture for long periods,
which is why movement and changing your posture throughout the day is important to reduce fatigue and
subsequent discomfort.
32. What is the traditional belief about slouching mentioned in the passage?
A. It helps improve memory and mood.
B. It is a comfortable and safe posture.
C. It can damage the spine and cause pain.
D. It is beneficial for diverse spinal movements.
33. According to the passage, what is one potential effect of slouching?
A. It causes immediate and permanent damage to the spine.
B. It may lead to poorer memory recall and a worse mood.
C. It significantly increases the risk of severe muscle fatigue.
D. It makes it impossible for the spine to perform diverse movements.
34. What does the UK government’s latest guidance emphasize for people working with screens?
A. Changing positions and taking breaks regularly.
B. Avoiding any movement to keep the spine stable.
C. Maintaining an idealized upright posture at all times.
D. The importance of a single, comfortable sitting posture.35. What is the author’s attitude towards slouching?
A. Favourable. B. Opposed. C. Objective. D. Dismissive.

I had always believed that leading by example was the best way to teach my 15-year-old son, Ryan, about
compassion (同情心). For months, my focus had been on supporting a charity for children with heart diseases,
especially a brave little boy named Oliver.
However, my actions were met with dissatisfaction from Ryan. One evening, after I had to cancel our plannedmovie night due to an emergency with Oliver, his frustration boiled over “It’s always about those sick kids! You
care more about strangers than you do about me!” he yelled, his voice filled with a mix of anger and hurt.
His words cut deep. I realized that my good intentions were driving a gap between us, I needed him to
understand, not just through my words, but through his own eyes. So the next day, I insisted he come with me to the
hospital.
At the hospital, Ryan was quiet and distant, leaning against the wall of Oliver’s room with his arms crossed.
He watched as I talked with Oliver, but his expression remained unimpressed. I felt a pang of disappointment,
thinking my plan had failed.
Then, something unexpected happened. Oliver, despite his weakness, was curiously looking at the tall, quiet
teenager. With a shy smile, he asked Ryan, “Can you tell me a story?” Caught off guard, Ryan unwillingly muttered
a few lines. Oliver’s eyes lit up as if it were the most fantastic tale. He began asking Ryan about his life — his
school, his friends, soccer games, and everything a normal boy like him should experience but Oliver couldn’t
experience. That day, they talked a lot.
A change became noticeable days later during a trip to a convenience store. As Ryan picked out his drink, he
hesitated, then turned to me. “Maybe we could bring a strawberry milk for Oliver?” he suggested. A wave of hope
warmed my heart.
Finally, the day of Oliver’s major surgery arrived. The evening before, Ryan visited him on his own. I found
them later in the room, and Oliver, holding Ryan’s hand, looked up and asked, “Do you think that I can grow up...

【答案】例文
Hearing these words, Ryan felt a sharp pang in his heart, as if an invisible hand had tightly gripped his chest.
He looked into Oliver’s clear, hopeful eyes — those eyes that should have been filled with the joy of childhood, but
now held traces of suffering beyond his years. Ryan suddenly realized that while he had been complaining about his
mother’s lack of companionship, Oliver was fighting every single day just for the chance to “grow up.” He held
Oliver’s thin little hand, saying, “Of course you can! After the surgery, you’ll run even faster than me.” The two
exchanged a smile.
