BWukong, Tiangong, Tianwen … Do you know where the names of Chinese space programs come from?
Wukong, the Dark Matter Particle Explorer satellite (暗物质粒子探测卫星), is named after Chinese
superhero Monkey King. According to Journey to the West, Monkey King has a pair of sharp eyes which can tell
the difference between good and evil (邪恶的). The Wukong satellite is just as sharp-eyed as Monkey King to help
scientists search for dark matter in space.
The name of the space station, Tiangong, means “Heavenly Palace”. In Chinese myths, this is the home of
Tian Di (天帝). Now Tiangong Space Station is a home for Chinese astronauts in space. And China welcomes
foreign astronauts to Tiangong so that they can work together.
Tianwen, China’s Mars missions (任务), gets its name from the poem Tianwen by Qu Yuan. Qu Yuan is a
well-known poet from ancient China. In Tianwen, he had the questions about the sky, stars, nature, myths and the
real world, showing his hunger for truth. Perhaps the Tianwen missions will end up answering some of Qu Yuan’s
questions.
If you look into more names of Chinese space programs, you will find that they all have beautiful meanings.

When Goldie Nejat began developing robots in 2005, she spent much of her time knocking on doors to let
people know how her robots worked but few showed interest. “But now, it’s different,” says Nejat. “People calling
from around the world ask when my robots are going to be ready.” Nejat’s robots are designed to meet an
increasing need—caregiving for the old. The population of the people over age 80 will be more than 426 million in
2050, about three times larger than that now.
Such robots could be especially useful to patients with Alzheimer’s disease (阿尔茨海默病). They can help
with everyday activities from preparing food to telling the patients to take their medicine on time. They can also
play games with patients to keep them active.
Some have worried that caregiving robots might reduce human interaction (互动) and cause more humans to
lose their jobs. “But the purpose is to support human care, not to take the place of it,” says Brian Scassellati. He has
tested robots with different patients, and found that daily interaction with robots can help children with autism
spectrum disorder (自闭症谱系障碍) improve social skills.
As a field grows, scientists try to understand human-robot relationships (关系) better. Do robots offer
advantages because they don’t have feelings and don’t give opinions? Will patients lose interest?
“One thing is clear,” Scassellati says. “Robots can give care to the patients and the need for that will increase
in the future.”
32. How does the writer start the passage?
A. By using sayings. B. By showing some facts.
C. By raising a question. D. By providing some suggestions.
33. What does Paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A. The purpose of the robots. B. A test on the robots.
C. Serious problems the robots may cause. D. Old people’s opinions on the robots.
34. Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?
A. Scientists are trying to understand human-robot relationships.
B. The need for taking care of the old is increasing these years.
C. Such robots can help autistic children improve their social skills.
D. Many people called to order the robots when they were first made.
35. From Scassellati’s words, we can infer (推断) that Nejat’s robots ______.
A. will have feelings soon B. will get more popular
C. can take the place of humans D. can give their own opinions

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
“Want to take a walk, Tyler?” Grandpa Charlie called from the front room. “In a minute, Grandpa,” Tyler
called back, looking at his mom. “I thought Grandpa wasn’t feeling well, and it’s cold outside. Can he take a
walk?”
“The fresh air will be good for him. And your grandpa doesn’t want to miss waving at people,” Mama said.
“He knows it makes them happy, and when they wave back, it makes him happy, too.”
Tyler walked into the front room and saw Grandpa Charlie wrapping a gray scarf around his face and neck.
“Hope I don’t look too much like a mummy (木乃伊),” Grandpa Charlie said, his eyes twinkling. He put on his red
hat, and they stepped outside.
He waved to the first car that passed. A boy stuck his head out the window and yelled, “There’s the man in the
red hat!” Grandpa Charlie waved to him and to the people in the next three cars. They all waved back.
Grandpa Charlie and Tyler turned a corner. An old man wearing a brown hat and a scarf walked toward them.
He was frowning.
“Hi, Henry,” Grandpa Charlie said. “I don’t see you out much.”
“My doctor is making me take walks for my health, but I don’t like it,” Henry grumbled (抱怨) . “It’s
supposed to be autumn, but it feels like the dead of winter.” He pulled his scarf up over his mouth and nose andwalked past them.
“He’s bad-tempered!” Tyler said in a low voice. “Henry is just lonely. His wife died right after we lost your
grandmother.”
Suddenly, a gust of wind blew off both men’s hats. The hats flew toward the duck pond, and Henry’s went in.
Tyler ran down the hill and grabbed Grandpa Charlie’s hat off the grass and fished Henry’s out of the water. He ran
back up the hill, holding out Henry’s hat. “It’s wet. Just throw it away. I’ll have to buy a new hat,” Henry said
coldly, walking past Tyler.
A car went by, but no one beeped the horn or waved. Grandpa Charlie didn’t seem to notice for he was talking
to a neighbor.

A Virtual Tour Around China
Last week, the Tech Club of our school held an exciting event “A Virtual Tour around China”, which turned
out to be a huge hit!
With the help of VR headsets, students visited a series of iconic sites, starting with the Great Wall, which
snaked majestically across the landscapes displayed in the headsets. They also explored the Forbidden City,
appreciating its vast courtyards and grand halls that once housed ancient emperors. The experience ended up with a
visit to the Terracotta Army in Xi’an and the details of each soldier in 3D truly stunned everyone.
This virtual tour provided students with a unique experience to appreciate the charm of China. Participants all
marveled at the realistic visual effects and the thrill of this virtual tour.

Tyler stared at his grandpa’s red hat and came up with a plan. If waving could bring Grandpa joy, maybe it
could make Henry’s day too. Tyler thought to himself. Then he asked Grandpa Charlie if he could give the red hat
to Henry since his was wet. Grandpa Charlie readily agreed and immediately, Tyler dashed to catch up with Henry.
“Grandpa wants you to have his hat.” Tyler said sincerely, presenting the red hat to Henry, who stared at Tyler for a
moment. Then he shrugged, took the hat, and put it on. “Tell him thanks,” Henry said, walking away.
A car passed, and the people inside waved at Henry. Soon, another car passed and honked. Henry was
confused. When the people in the third car waved at him, he hesitated for a moment and waved back, puzzlement
still lingering in his mind. Not until a cheerful voice shouted, “Good morning, grandpa in red hat!” did he realized
what was going on. He laughed aloud and decided to do something. “Maybe I’ll take more walks,” he said casually
as he caught up with Grandpa Charlie and Tyler, his voice softer. “It’s not so bad out here, especially with good
company.” Tyler and Grandpa Charlie exchanged a knowing glance, delighted to see Henry’s spirits visibly rise.
They continued the walk, the cold air no longer feeling so chilly, as the warmth of kindness and connection filled
the day.
