The greening of planes, trains and automobiles
Moving goods and people around the world is responsible for a large part of global CO emissions.

As the world races to decarbonize everything, it faces particular problems with transportation — which
accounts for about a quarter of our energy-related greenhouse gas emissions. Here’s the breakdown of the
emissions in 2018 for different modes of transport.

This energy transition (变革) is global, and the amount of renewable energy the world will need is “a
little bit mind-blowing,” says mechanical engineer Keith Wipke at the National Renewable Energy
Laboratory. It’s estimated that the global demand for electricity could more than double by 2050.
Fortunately, analyses suggest that renewables are up to the task. “We need to speed up the development of
green energy, and it will all get used,” says Wipke.
21. What percentage of global transport emissions did road vehicles account for in 2018?

Winter was the worst time of year if you didn’t have a home to go to. Tragically, I found myself in
that terrible situation, by no fault of my own. A string of bad luck had caused it. Losing my job after
twelve years of loyal service, then my landlord evicting me because I had no money to pay the rent.
Feeling embarrassed about the situation I faced, I kept it a secret from my parents, who lived miles away.
Maybe I should have asked for help, but something in the back of my mind stopped me every time I
picked up a phone, hoping everything would work out in the end.
If only that were true.
In December, as happy families went shopping for Christmas, I would watch them from a shop
entrance with only a thin blanket to keep me warm. On over one occasion, I would cry under the blanket
so no one could see me. I was so ashamed. How could things have got so bad?
A few days later, the most wonderful thing happened. While the snow fell heavily and my blanket
was wet through, a man approached me with a kind smile, and he said, “It’s freezing, fella. I can’t have
you staying out here tonight, especially on the Christmas holidays, as if anything happened to you, I
couldn’t live with myself.”
I looked up at him and a tear came to my eye. “Why would you help me?” I replied.
The man gently placed a hand on my shoulder, and then said, “It’d be nice to have someone with me
again after losing my Betty last year. And there was me thinking I was going to spend Christmas on my
own.” He laughed.
There was something about him I trusted, so I took his hand. At that moment a warmth was felt from
deep down inside, and I believed in miracles again.

A recent study links social media use with poor sleep quality and more common nightmares(噩梦).
It’s the latest in a series of studies that link adolescents’ frequent use of social media with worrisome
mental health outcomes — and the first to focus on the negative psychological (心理的) impact it may be
having on dream quality and related sleep issues.
This occurs, in part, because the content one sees there “about bullying, political fights, distressing
(使人心烦的) news, and social comparisons adds emotional distress, which can lead to bad dreams,” says
Shelby Harris, a clinical psychologist and a neuroscientist at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New
York City, who was not involved in the research.
Regardless of one’s intentions, upsetting information or negative interactions commonly occur across
the social platforms as their algorithms (算法) are specifically designed to physiologically (生理地) and
psychologically arouse emotions and feed into media addiction, making the brain and body want even
more social media input.
Examples of commonly reported nightmares included fights with other social media users, annoying
大庆铁人中学2024级高二年级上学期期中考试 第 6 页 共 14 页news stories, being unable to access one’s social media account, and feelings of being treated unfairly,
helplessness, and loss of control.
And while people may sometimes experience such unpleasant outcomes due to other external factors,
“the contribution of this study is that these themes are in the specific context of social media,” says
Pamela Rutledge, director of the Media Psychology Research Center in California, who was not involved
in the research.
Beyond unpleasant and distressing dreams, the Flinders study and other related research shows that
poorer sleep quality and sleep disruptions are also generally more common among people who overuse
social media applications. Even more plain, Chen says “if your eyes are open doing something else,
you’re not sleeping.”
Recent data shows 20 percent of people getting less than five hours of sleep each night with more
than 50 percent getting only six to seven hours nightly. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention recommends getting between seven to eight hours “of good-quality sleep” every night in order
to avoid issues related to sleep deprivation (缺乏).
28. Which online content may cause bad dreams?
A. Live basketball score updates. B. Step-by-step bread recipes.
C. Breaking news about a terrorist attack. D. Cute videos of cats playing the piano.
29. Why are negative interactions commonly seen on social platforms?
A. People express emotions on platforms. B. The media only publish distressing news.
C. People compare themselves with others. D. Algorithms are built to bring out emotions.
30. What is a common feature of the reported nightmares?
A. They are clearly remembered. B. They last for a long time.
C. They appear over and over again. D. They have similar contexts.
31. What might be discussed in the next paragraph?
A. What health problems may arise. B. Why people ignore sleep quality.
C. How to check health conditions. D. Where to find medical resources.

大庆铁人中学2024级高二年级上学期期中考试 第 7 页 共 14 页Hollywood may have warned about the risks of striking up relationships with artificial intelligence,
but one computer scientist says we may be missing a trick if we do not embrace the positives that human-
machine relationships have to offer.
Tony Prescott, professor of cognitive robotics at the University of Sheffield, argues that AI has an
important role to play in preventing human loneliness. Just as we develop meaningful bonds with pets,
and have no reservations about children playing with dolls, so we should be open to the value of AI to
adults, he says.
“Human loneliness is often characterised by a down ward spiral (螺旋线) in which isolation(孤独)
leads to lower self-esteem (自尊), which discourages further interaction with people,” Prescott writes in a
new book. The Psychology of Artificial Intelligence. “There may be ways in which AI companionship
could help break this cycle by boosting feelings of self-worth and helping maintain or improve social
skills. If so, relationships with AIs could support people to find companionship with human and artificial
others.”
With more than a third of Americans reporting “serious loneliness,” the loneliness problem has
become evident in recent years. Whether AI can, or should, be part of the solution is not a new debate.
Sherry Turkle, professor of social science at MIT, has warned that forming relationships with machines
could backfire, and lead people to have fewer secure and fulfilling human relationships.
Murali Doraiswamy, professor of medicine at Duke University, said: “Right now, all the evidence
points to having a close human friend as the best solution for loneliness. But until society prioritizes social
connectedness, robots are a solution for the millions of people who have no friends.”
Researchers may soon know whether people turn to AI for company. Tech firms are building chatbots
to be ever more fluent and responsive to emotions. This week, it emerged that OpenAI asked Scarlett
Johansson to be the voice of their latest chatbot, GPT-4.0, to “help consumers to feel comfortable”.
Johansson declined, but the chatbot was released with a voice that friends and family thought was hers.
OpenAI has since suspended (中止) the voice option “out of respect for Ms Johansson”.
32. What do the pets and dolls mentioned in Paragraph 2 help illustrate?
A. The limitations of human-AI relationships in daily life.
B. The potential for AI to provide similar companionship.
C. The possibility for AI to replace traditional companions.
大庆铁人中学2024级高二年级上学期期中考试 第 8 页 共 14 页D. The overestimation of AI’s role in ending human loneliness.
33. What do the underlined words “this cycle” in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A. The repeated use of AI and others for companionship.
B. The consistent failure of human relationships with AI.
C. The process of developing human self-worth and social skills.
D. The pattern of isolation, lower self-esteem and further isolation.
34. Who expresses concern that AI companionship could weaken human connections?
A. Tony Prescott. B. Sherry Turkle.
C. Murali Doraiswamy. D. Scarlett Johansson.
35. Which central question does the text mainly explore?
A. Could AI contribute to increased loneliness?
B. Will AI companionship replace human interaction?
C. Can AI be used as an effective solution for loneliness?
D. Is AI companionship preferable to traditional relationships?

Advice to the Hard-working Girl
You are not a superwoman. No matter how much you think you could handle, sometimes you need to
take a step back and realize when you’re taking on too much. No one wants to be the one to quit, but
sometimes taking a break is necessary to get work done effectively.
Practice the following things to help you accomplish this:
___ 3 6___ .
In order to please everyone, you try to say “yes” and be nice, not knowing that you’re hurting
yourself in the long run. Saying “yes” to everything adds pressure. You always need to make sure not to
let anyone down and forget that you have to take care of yourself, too. ___ 3 7___ .
Take on what you can handle
Look, everyone knows you have the power to take on whatever you put your mind to, but don’t let
that make you feel like you have to take on everything at once. ___ 3 8___ . For example, if there are

It’s all about balance
___ 3 9___ . Taking on too much at times makes you forget that there is a life to live. Everyone is
proud of the work you’ve done but they miss you, too. Take a day to hang out with friends and family. The
work will still be there, and balancing work with fun will actually make you more efficient.
Sleepless nights are awful
When it comes to not being able to sleep, it should be a wake-up call. ___ 4 0___ . Usually, when your
mind is restless, it’s a sign that something is wrong. Over stressing could be the reason why you're losing
out on sleep and not sleeping makes you have a bad day. No one wants that, so don’t do it to yourself.
A. Take a deep breath
B. Stop saying “yes” to everything
C. You should learn to break things up
D. Work is good, but make sure to save time for fun
E. Keep that in mind when you try to be there for family

Our school holds an annual book fair each January, where new and used books are available for
students to purchase. Our librarian, Mr. Egan, is the school sponsor (主办者) for it. Traditionally, the
tenth-grade students are responsible for the planning, set-up, and selling at the fair. I am sure that Mr.
Egan consulted our teacher, Ms. Cates, for suggestions as to who would be the student directors, and I was
pleasantly surprised when he approached me to be one of the students in charge. I was even more
surprised when he told me that the student I would be working with was Charlie and we have known each
other since kindergarten but have never been close. Ever since we were partners for the science project
last year, there is very little we choose to say to each other. Needless to say, the science project fell short
of our expectations. In light of that event, I was shocked that Mr. Egan and Ms. Cates found us a suitable
match.
At the meeting with Mr. Egan, we divided the responsibilities between us. I would be in charge of
setting up the room and getting the volunteers to work the sale for all three days. Charlie would be in
charge of all the books. We were both quite satisfied with our jobs, and even more satisfied that there
would be little contact between us.
With only two weeks to plan, I knew I could not waste time. I asked John and Rachel to help me with
the set-up and twelve other classmates to work at the fair. I figured that, between Mr. Egan, the friends
who volunteered to help, and me, we would be just fine.

surrounded by a million boxes of books. I asked him, Charlie, what’s wrong?
