B Born on her family’s farm in Ray, North Dakota, Mary Sherman Morgan had been helping her father with farm work before she could attend the small-town schoolhouse. Being a few years behind didn’t hold her back and she graduated from high school with honors. Aware of her intelligence, she ran away from Ray to attend Minot State University as a chemistry major, where her skill was evident. The outbreak of World War II led to a national shortage of chemists and scientists. In spite of the fact that she was still a student and a woman, she was offered a job as a chemical analyst due to her talents, producing explosives for the wartime effort. She put her degree on hold and moved to Ohio, taking on the dangerous job of analyzing unstable chemicals to produce weapons. 高二英语第 4页,共 12页Afterthewarendedtherewasafallindemandforexplosives,soshemadeamovetothefieldofaeronautics, moving to California to workforNAA(NorthAmericanAviation).Theonly woman outof 900engineers,she was soonpromoted to a role which involved calculating the performance of rocket propellants (推进剂) anddesigning special fuels to work with different engines. Her experience with propellants meant that when NAA was tasked to find a fuel capable of lifting the redesigned Redstone missiles into space, Morgan was appointed technical lead on the project. National pride was on the line, so Morgan set about investigating fuels. After countless trials, she finally designed her own mixture, whichwasnamedHydyne. D “Does my smile look big in this?” Future fitting-room mirrors in clothing stores could subtly adjust your reflection to make you look — and hence feel — happier, encouraging you to like what you see. That’s the idea behind the Emotion Evoking System developed by Shigeo Yoshida and colleagues at the University of Tokyo in Japan. The system can control your emotions and personal preferences by presenting you with an image of your own smiling or frowning face. The principle that physiological changes can drive emotional ones — that laughter comes before happiness, rather than the other way around — is a well-established idea. The researchers wanted to see if this idea could be used to build a computer system that manipulates how you feel. The system works by presenting the user with a webcam (网络摄像头) image of his or her face — as if they were looking in a mirror. The image is then subtly altered with software, turning the corners of the mouth up or down and changing the area around the eyes, so that the person appears to smile or frown. Without telling them the aim of the study, the team recruited 21 volunteers and asked them to sit in front of the screen while performing an unrelated task. When the task was complete the participants rated how they felt. When the faces on screen appeared to smile, people reported that they felt happier. Conversely, when the image was given a sad expression, they reported feeling less happy. Yoshida and his colleagues tested whether manipulating the volunteers’ emotional state would influence their preferences. Each person was given a scarf to wear and again presented with the altered webcam image. The volunteers that saw themselves smiling while wearing the scarf were more likely to report that they liked it, and those that saw themselves not smiling were less likely. The system could be used to manipulate consumers’ impressions of products, say the researchers. For example, mirrors in clothing-store fitting rooms could be replaced with screens showing altered reflections. They also suggest people may be more likely to find clothes attractive if they see themselves looking happy while trying them on. “It’s certainly an interesting area,” says Chris Creed at the University of Birmingham, UK. But he notes that using such technology in a shop would be harder than in the lab, because people will use a wide range of expressions. “Attempting to make slight differences to these and ensuring that the reflected image looks believable would be much more challenging,” he says. Of course, there are also important ethical questions surrounding such subtly manipulative technology. “You could argue that if it makes people happy, what harm is it doing?” says Creed. “ But I can imagine that many people 高二英语第 7页,共 12页mayfeelmanipulated,uncomfortableandcheatediftheyfoundout.” 37. We know that nature is the best prescription, and new research suggests we can gain benefits while visiting parks. (41)______________ The study published in the International Journal of Environmental Health Research found that spending 20 minutes in a city park can make you happier, regardless of whether you use that time to exercise or not. “In general, we found park visitors reported an improvement in emotional well-being after the park visit,” the study’s lead author, Professor Hon K. Yuen at the University of Alabama at Birmingham said in a statement. “(42)______________ Instead, we found time spent in the park is related to improved emotional well-being.” For the study, 94 adults visited three city parks in Mountain Brook, Alabama. (43)______________ They also completed a questionnaire about their subjective well-being before and after their visit. A visit of between 20 and 25 minutes showed the best results, with a roughly 64% increase in the participants’ self-reported well-being, even if they didn’t move a great deal in the park.
