Science is always seen as hard-core and hard to understand. But could you imagine hundreds
of people being attracted by the cover of a science magazine?
The achievement was completed after Wang Yixi and his team made the cover of an October
issue of Structure, a US-based Cell Press journal. The cover shows a Chinese ink painting that
vividly shows the process in which a special enzyme (酶) involved in the biosynthesis (生物合成)
of an important organic compound is activated―the latest breakthrough by a Chinese scientific
research team. Another one of his popular works that carries distinctive Chinese elements is a
composite image, describing a scientist as the folk goddess Nyuwa, carrying her newly discovered
compound to fill a crack in the sky.
While studying chemistry at university, Wang Yixi often came across an experimental
preparation process that he had to explain, but the amount of text was too large and abstract. As she
had been interested in drawing, and related software like Photoshop, he decided to turn his graphics
into a fine art. He went on to study 3D graphics software in order to better display the microscopic
structures in his field and improve the presentation of his papers.
It didn’t take long before his classmates and professors noticed his talents and asked him to
help them with their papers. By word of mouth, more people beat a path to Wang’s door and were
willing to pay for his service. Over the past four years, Wang and his team have come up with more
than 10,000 visual works for academic papers across a variety of fields, many of which have made
their way to the world’s top academic journals, including Nature, Science and Cell.“Every scientific paper is innovative, and graphics are an essential part of scientific papers,”
Wang says, adding that what he tries to achieve is an explanation of models or methods, to showcase
experimental results, visually process data or compare differences among experiments.
24.What play a special role in Wang’s works?
A.Fairytales. B.Chinese elements.
C.Rich colors. D.Complex structures.
25.What can we learn about Wang Yixi from paragraph 3?
A.He preferred painting to Chemistry.
B.He developed useful mapping software.
C.He had an active mind to solve problem.
D.He had trouble conducting his experiment.
26.How does Wang make abstract papers easily understood?
A.By visualizing them vividly. B.By showing them accurately.
C.By explaining them in detail. D.By constructing them uniquely
27.Which is the best title for the text?
A.The power of art B.Dilemmas of science
C.Mysteries of Chemistry D.Inspiration in science

Years ago, I bought a blouse. That same day, I considered putting it on, but for no particular
reason I decided not to. That weekend, I again considered wearing the blouse, but the occasion didn’t
seem special enough, so again, I passed it up. Fast forward to today, I have never worn that blouse.
What happened here? Why do people own so many unused possessions, treating them as though
they are too special to use? To find out, I ran an experiment in which participants imagined buying
a bottle of wine. We had half of the participants imagine considering opening it one night, but
deciding not to. Then when we measured how special the wine seemed and participants’ intentions
to open it later, we found that those who had imagined holding off on opening it were in fact less
likely to intend to open it later. When asked the reason, most assumed they were waiting for a future
occasion to open it — a more special occasion.
Why do people fall into this mental trap? Prior research points to two main reasons.
First, when options are presented one at a time, rather than all at once, it can be difficult to
know when to make a decision. So people often end up “holding out” for an idealized future occasion.Second, regardless of the actual reasons behind their feelings and actions, people often come up
with their own explanations after the fact.
Putting these together is a recipe for what psychologists term “specialness spirals”. When you
give up using something — for whatever reason — if you believe that you are waiting to use it, the
possession will start to feel more special. And as you search for the right occasion day after day, it
becomes more tempting to hold out for a future occasion. The less you use it, though, the more
special it feels, and the cycle continues. Ultimately, the likelihood of using the possession becomes
rarer and rarer. The more this happens, the more stuff you have lying around.
How can you fight specialness spirals? Try committing in advance to using an item on a specific
occasion. When buying a dress, tell yourself you’ll wear it this weekend. Or when purchasing a
candle, plan to light it that day. This strategy encourages you to actually enjoy your possessions.
28. What were the participants asked to imagine doing in the experiment?
A. Putting off drinking the wine.
B. Evaluating the quality of the wine.
C. Listing reasons for drinking the wine.
.
D Discussing how they would deal with the wine.
29. What does the underlined word “tempting” in paragraph 5 mean?
A. Particular. B. Ordinary. C. Inviting. D. Unappealing.
30. What can we learn about specialness spirals?
A. They can mislead people into shopping traps.
B. They can lead to a collection of unused stuff.
C. They result from an optimistic attitude to the future.
D. They help explain the psychology of delayed rewards.
31. What is the main purpose of the text?
A. To explain a psychological phenomenon.
B. To criticize a wrong consumption concept.
C. To remind people to enjoy their possessions.
D. To encourage people to prepare for a rainy day.

One day I typed into ChatGPT all about my upset feelings and it instantly responded, offering a
list of practical advice. Nowadays millions of people are already turning to ChatGPT and specialisttherapy (治疗) chatbots for convenient and inexpensive mental health support.
Some experts say this is a boon. After all, AI, undisturbed by embarrassment and burnout,
might be able to express empathy more openly and tirelessly than humans. But others worry about
the consequences of people seeking emotional support from machines that can only pretend to care.
Some even wonder if the rise of so-called empathetic AI might change the way we interact with one
another. Indeed, empathy is one of our species’ defining qualities, developing as it did in pace with
social interaction.
One recent analysis about empathy looked at 52 studies published between 1980 and 2019,
which shows that the empathiser must first be able to recognize how the other person is feeling.
They must also be affected by those emotions and differentiate between themselves and the other
person, grasping that the other person’s feelings aren’t their own while still being able to imagine
their experience.
On the first point, in recent years, AI-powered chatbots have made progress in their ability to
read human emotions, most powered by large language models (LLMs) that work by predicting
which words are most likely to appear together based on training data. In this way, LLMs like
ChatGPT can seemingly identify our feelings and respond appropriately most of the time. But when
it comes to the other criteria, AI still misses the mark in many ways. Empathy is interpersonal, with
continued feedback helping to perfect the empathiser’s response, which also requires some degree
of intuitive (直觉的) awareness of an individual and their situation.
All of this helps to explain conversations like the ones I had with ChatGPT. At the end of the
day, despite talking to multiple chatbots online, I did what I knew I had to do all along: I picked up
my phone and called a friend.
32.What does the underlined word “boon” in paragraph 2 mean?
A.Trap. B.Prize. C.Blessing. D.Challenge.
33.What does the recent analysis show about empathy?
A.It calls for clear communication. B.It starts with emotion identification.
C.It rules out individual difference. D.It depends on rich imagination.
34.What can AI do according to paragraph 4?
A.Provide data-driven feedback. B.Recognize one’s real desire.
C.Update large language models. D.Predict one’s behavior by intuition.35.What does the author think of ChatGPT?
A.Its development should be sped up.
B.Its intelligence is winning more favor.
C.Its application should be strictly managed.
D.Its artificial kindness is no match for humans’.

A Precious Dress
I was raised in a family where my parents were united in their way of bringing up children,
but it mostly fell to my mother to actually carry it out, and she managed the family budget effortlessly.
Looking back, I honestly think I would be a different person if my mum hadn’t turned a dress into
a life lesson I carry with me today.
If we complained about not having what another kid did, we’d hear something like I don’t
care what so-and-so got for his birthday, you are not getting a car for your birthday or a lavish sweet
party. We had to earn our allowance (零用钱) by doing chores around the house. My brothers can
no doubt remember hours spent cleaning the house. I can still remember how long it took to polish
the legs of our dining table. Sometimes, I couldn’t even contain my envy of Chloe, a neighbourhood
girl, always beautifully dressed, whose parents satisfied her with almost every need.
One day, my mother drove me downtown to buy some household necessities and there it was
in the shopping window. Pink, lovely, delicately trimmed (镶嵌着) with lace, the dress winked (眨
眼) at me and I knew I had to have it. “It’s beautiful, ” my mother said when I pointed it out to her.
“What a beautiful dress! ”
I tried to hide my desire at first. But then I guess I couldn’t stand it any longer. “Mum, please
get it? I’ll do anything, but I need that dress. I love it. Please?”
I was desperate.
“You know,” she said, gently rubbing my back, “if you save up, you could buy this
yourself.”
“By the time I make enough, it’ll be sold!”
“There might be a way,” she said.
And so our paying plan unfolded. Mum bought the dress and put it safely in some hiding
place where I couldn’t find. Each week I eagerly counted my growing savings increased by extrawork. Weeks later, I counted and jumped for joy. Oh, I made it! I finally had the exact amount we’d
agreed on. Having put on my dress, I flew to school like a bird. However, the unthinkable
happened.
注意: 所续写短文的词数应为150左右
The moment I arrived at the school gate, Chloe appeared in exactly the same dress.
