A Central Florida high school student is paying it forward by building a park for kids in a school. Students at
Hunter’s Creek Elementary School can now play in a new park. It doesn’t have any slides or swings but it features
math.
Caraballo built the park for younger students to enjoy the math games there. He said the idea came to him after
a summer program at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). “That’s what I hope kids will get out of the
park: math is not just about formulas (公式) and memorizing numbers, but it’s about connections and ideas, and how
you turn those ideas into solutions for problems,” he said.
Caraballo and his family moved to the United States when he was a fourth grader. After moving into his new
home, he went to school soon. He joined the dual-language program, where he would learn English and show his
love of math. “I wanted to do it here at Hunter’s Creek Elementary School because of Ms. DePriest. She was myfourth-grade teacher and my first teacher here in the U. S., and she offered me much help.”
Ms. DePriest, now the school’s assistant head teacher, said Caraballo is one of the students teachers don’t forget.
“A student coming back after all of these years and saying, ‘You’re the reason why I want to do something special
for the school’ just really meant a lot to me,” Ms. DePriest said. “Teachers don’t often get to hear those things or see
the impacts on their students, so that was really impressive for me.”
,
While students enjoy the park Caraballo will be hard at work studying at MIT, his dream school. He’ll be a
freshman in autumn. “My hope is to take those problem-solving skills that you learn in a field like math and apply
them to real-world problems and overall make the world a better place,” Caraballo said.
24. What did Caraballo want the kids to do with his park?
A. Remember numbers. B. Learn all kinds of formulas.
C. Solve difficult math problems. D. Take in the pleasure of math.
25. How might Caraballo feel when talking about Ms. DePriest?
A. Embarrassed. B. Relieved.
C. Grateful. D. Confident.
26. What do Ms. DePriest’s words show?
A. She is surprised at her influence on Caraballo.
B. The park shows Caraballo’s love of math.
C. Caraballo’s talent for math benefits his achievements.
D. She is glad to see Caraballo’s problem-solving skills.
27. Which of the following can best describe Caraballo?
A. Hard-working and innovative. B. Responsible and honest.
C. Adventurous and humorous. D. Creative and outgoing.

NASA has selected the first three science experiments that astronauts will bring to the moon as part of the
Artemis III mission. This mission, currently planned for 2026, will mark the first time that humans have walked on
the lunar surface since the Apollo 17 mission in 1972.
The first experiment is called Lunar Effects on Agricultural Flora (LEAF). In this experiment, astronauts will
grow plants on the surface of the moon, observing their ability to photosynthesize (进行光合作用) and grow, and
how they respond to the stress of lower gravity and space radiation (辐射).
This won’t be the first time that plants have been grown in space — Astronauts have been growing vegetables
on the International Space Station for a decade, and China’s Chang’e 4 mission planted seeds on the moon in 2019.
However, those seeds didn’t last long. So if everything goes well, LEAF will give us our first look at the full growthcycle of plants on the moon.
The second experiment is the Lunar Environment Monitoring Station (LEMS), a seismometer to measure
moonquakes near the lunar south pole. Characterizing how the ground moves during quakes will help us understand
the underground structure of the area. The final experiment, called the Lunar Dielectric Analyzer (LDA), will measure
how electrically conductive the soil is. Ice attached to dust particles increases the ability of the soil to conduct
electricity, so the LDA will help with the hunt for frost deposits (积霜) and measure changes in the soil as the sun
rises and sets over the lunar surface.
“These three deployed instruments were chosen to begin scientific investigations that will address key Moon to
Mars science objectives,” said NASA’s Pam Melroy in a statement. “The goal of the Artemis program is to lay the
groundwork for long-term human presence on the moon, which will, in turn, teach us how to prepare for manned
missions to Mars.”
28. What is the aim of LEAF?
A. To grow more plants. B. To test plant adaptability.
C. To develop new vegetables. D. To change the life cycle of plants.
29. What does paragraph 3 mainly want to tell us?
A. Previous studies of moon farming. B. The history of growing plants on the moon.
C. Possible risks for the mission. D. The importance of the new experiment.
30. What did Pam Melroy say about the Artemis program?
.
A It will contribute to Mars exploration. B. It is a set of basic scientific experiments.
C. It has chosen a key goal to achieve. D. It will help conduct research on moonquakes.
31. Where may the text appear?
A. In a geography textbook. B. In an environment report.
C. In a science magazine. D. In a space exhibition review.

The sounds of silence are more appealing to some than others. Silence can be a safety zone, a place where we
process what’s happening around us and gather energy for wherever the day may take us. Or silence can feel like a
blank that needs to be filled immediately.
Science is on the side of silence, though, with research supporting it as a crucial factor in a healthy brain. This
is especially “on the map” in our noisy world, where we are rarely outside of the noise-generating company of a
mobile device, if not other people.
The hippocampus — the section of the brain that regulates memory, emotion and learning — is the beneficiary
of silence, according to several studies. In one 2013 study, mice who were given two hours of pure silence each daygrew new cells — complete with functioning neurons — in their hippocampus regions.
Other research has shown that noise activates the stress-response functions in our brains, even while we are
asleep. Exposure (暴露) to noise activates the area of the brain called the amygdala to release stress hormones into
our bloodstream, which may result in an increase in heart disease and tinnitus.
The good news is that exposure to silence activates the opposite reaction, our nervous system’s “relaxation
response.” One study even found a greater calming effect in silence than with relaxing music.
The benefits of silence can be hard to recognize if we are struggling with depression, loneliness and other
feelings. But seeking out silence for the purpose of restoration and renewal can help redefine quietness as a profound,
even spiritual pursuit.
So perhaps in this noisy world today, you can find a moment to follow the advice of the medieval Persian poet
Rumi: “Silence is the sleep that nourishes wisdom. Listen to silence. It has so much to say.” Your brain will thank
you, as will your spirit.
32. What does the author intend to show in paragraph 1?
A. The advantages of silence. B. The different views on silence.
C. The impact of silence on health. D. The scientific research on silence.
33. What does the underlined part “on the map” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Familiar. B. Challenging. C. Confusing. D. Significant.
34. What can we learn from the different studies?
A. Mice usually feel lonely in silence. B. It is hard to seek silence in the noisy world.
C. Certain noise brings about great excitement. D. Exposure to silence makes people relaxed.
35. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Why Is Silence Good for Our Brains? B. Is Silence Supported by Science?
C. Which Is Appealing, Noise or Silence? D. Can We Find Silence in the Noisy World?

第二节(满分25分)
67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
A few months ago, my beloved twenty-two-year-old cat passed away due to old-age-related health issues, leaving
a void (空虚感) in our home. With “only” a cat and a dog left, the silence and emptiness in the house were almost
unbearable. I decided the best way to honor her memory was to give that space in my home to another kitty, offering it
a new chance in life.
It’s important to note that all of my eats share a unique characteristic — they are all black. I have a special
,
fondness for giving a home to the “less adoptable” animals and it comes with the bonus of having at least one color I
can wear without worrying about cat hairs showing up on my clothes — and they all look like mini panthers (黑豹).
I decided to go to my local Humane Society to see the cats they had. The shelter was filled with manyadorable kitties. There were so many kitties, and I wanted them all! And then I found my boy.
The shelter had his name listed as “Lucky”. He was four years old, very shy, scared, skinny, and all black. He
was hiding at the back of one of the carriers in one of the cat rooms, obviously afraid of all the people visiting the
shelter. He hissed (发嘶嘶声) at everyone who tried to come near him. He had probably never been properly socialized
with humans; in other words, he was still half-wild. Knowing his socialization and fear issues, the shelter listed him
as a “spirit cat” — basically a cat that you can adopt but you should not expect him to stop hiding for six-plus months
after being taken home.
This was the cat that needed me. This was the cat I was going to adopt.
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
At the shelter, I sat next to the carrier Lucky was hiding in.
