In the working world, I paid close attention to our female senior managers. By watching and copying others—especially women of color who looked or sounded like me—I gained confidence in my own abilities. But when I started my own company, my pool of potential role models became smaller. Only 2.1% of risk investment goes to women-founded companies. “Who could I look up to?” I wondered. “Who can I emulate?” I decided to create an inspiration wall in my office, with photos of the role models I could see—women like Oprah, Melinda, and Vicky, cofounder of a skincare brand. I never thought I’d meet these women, but their success gave me hope. Then one day, a couple of years ago, I surprised myself with a thought: what if I did reach out to one of my role models? I feared rejection, but my desire for connection was stronger. I chose Vicky, whose journey had long inspired me. I didn’t have her email address. So I tried a cold Instagram message, and she responded the next day! That was in 2022. We’ve spoken numerous times since, and the conversations have been invaluable. They’re rare chances to gain guidance from a successful woman. But here’s the most valuable lesson I gained: when Vicky first replied to me, I wasn’t the only one excited. Vicky was excited too—because she’s always looking for ways to support other women. All my life, I’d thought of role models as a one-way relationship: I’d gain strength from someone stronger. But the situation is more than that. I once sent Vicky a care package from my sunglasses company. She wrote me a thank-you note, and 高二英语学科 试题 第3页(共9页)texted a selfie of her and her daughter wearing my products. Today, I keep that letter on my desk next to my keyboard—a reminder that, just as I believe in her, she believes in me. We’re all here to help each other grow. 24. Why did the author create an inspiration wall in her office? A. To encourage herself to work hard. B. To inspire her employees’ creativity. C. To make her workplace more attractive. D. To improve her employees’ work efficiency. 25. Why did the author choose to reach out to Vicky? A. She only had Vicky’s email address. B. She feared for being rejected by others. C. Vicky’s story had always motivated her. D. Vicky liked giving guidance to other women. 26. Which of the following can best describe the author? A. Creative and patient. B. Courageous and grateful. C. Honest and responsible. D. Talented and capable. 27. What is the best title for this passage? A. Practice Makes Perfect. B. Strength Flows Both ways. C. A Good Beginning Is Half Done. D. Actions Speak Louder Than Words. C Cars produced today are essentially smartphones with wheels. For drivers, this has meant many new features: automatic braking (刹车), turn-by-turn directions, entertainment systems. But carmakers are getting much more. They’re constantly collecting data from our vehicles, like how much we weigh, how fast we drive, how many children we have and even financial information. But who owns and, finally, controls that data? And what are carmakers doing with it? The issue of ownership is not clearly known. Drivers usually sign away their rights to data. It’s not unlike buying a smartphone. The difference is that most customers have no idea vehicles collect data. We know our smartphones collect data and we’re come to accept that we trade personal information for convenience. With cars, we have no such expectation. What carmakers are doing with the collected data isn’t clear. We know they use it to improve car performance and safety. And we know they have the ability to sell it to third parties they might choose. The data on your driving habits could be valuable to insurance companies. You may or may not choose to share your data with these services. But while you can turn off location data on your cellphone, there is no opt-out (退出权) feature for your car. Carmakers use data to warn us when something needs repair or when our cars need to be taken in for service. For almost a century, car owners have been able to take their vehicles to whichever shop they trust for maintenance and repair. That may be changing. When carmakers control the data, they can choose which service centers receive our information. They’re more likely to share our data only with their branded dealerships (经销商) than with independent repair shops which could have the edge in price and 高二英语学科 试题 第4页(共9页)convenience. It’s clear, because of its value—as high as $ 750 billion by 2030—carmakers are unlikely to release control of the data collected from our vehicles. Policymakers, however, have the opportunity to give drivers control—not just so that they can keep their data private but also so that they can share it with the people they want to see it. This will let car owners maintain what they’ve had for a century: the right to decide who fixes their car. 28. How is paragraph 2 developed? A. By presenting data. B. By giving examples. C. By analyzing causes. D. By making comparisons. 29.Whatif carmakers control user’s data? A.More car shops will open. B.Users will pay more for service. C.Independent repair shops will make profits. D.Carmakers will provide more repair shops. 30.What does the underlined phrase “have the edge” in paragraph 4 mean? A. Be weaker. B. Be worse. C. Be safer. D. Be better. 31.What can we infer from the last paragraph? A. Laws are expected to bring the data back to drivers. B. Drivers trade personal information for convenience. C. Carmakers will share the vehicle data with drivers soon. D. Car owners already have direct access to their vehicle data. D Close your eyes and picture yourself walking in the town. You can probably imagine the turns you’d need to take and the landmarks you’d encounter. This ability to imagine such scenarios in our minds is thought to be crucial to humans’ ability to plan ahead and has long been considered as a feature that distinguishes humans from animals. But a new study has found that rats can think about objects and places that are not right in front of them. Like humans, when rats experience places and events, specific neural (神经系统的) activity patterns are activated in the hippocampus (海马体), an area of the brain responsible for spatial (空间的) memory. In the study, the researchers developed a brain-machine interface (BMI), which allows them to test whether a rat can activate hippocampal activity to imagine going to a location. First, some rats were placed into a virtual reality environment and were rewarded when they traveled through this environment towards their goals by running on a treadmill (跑步机). At the same time, the BMI system recorded the rat’s hippocampal activity. The researchers could see which neurons were activated when the rat navigated the environment to reach each goal. Next, researchers disconnected the treadmill so that the rats could still see the virtual reality environment, but their running had no impact. By reproducing the brain activity they’d shown during the previous sessions, the rats could navigate to reward locations using just their thoughts. “Although it’s still unclear what the rat is experiencing while it’s traveling, the team has done a convincing job of showing rats can voluntarily reactivate mental maps of familiar places,” said Shayna, a cognitive neuroscientist. 高二英语学科 试题 第5页(共9页)The research also shows that the BMI can be used to explore hippocampal activity, providing a novel system for studying this important brain region. Because the BMI is increasingly used in prosthetics (假肢), this new work also opens up the possibility of designing novel prosthetic devices based on the same principles. 32. What is the purpose of the new study? A. To explore whether rats have the ability to imagine. B. To compare how humans and rats process spatial memory. C. To record how rats navigate in an unfamiliar environment. D. To prove the hippocampus is associated with spatial memory in rats. 33. What happened to the rats after the treadmill was disconnected? A. They had difficulty running freely. B. They demonstrated abnormal brain activity. C. They could reach reward places using mental maps. D. They were at a loss in the virtual reality environment. 34. What’s Shayna’s attitude towards the new study? A. Concerned. B. Positive. C. Doubtful. D. Uncaring. 35. What does the author highlight about the BMI in the last paragraph? A. Its design concept. B. Its research limitation. C. Its operating principle. D. Its application potential. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Learning English through news is a great way to improve your vocabulary and listening skills and learn about current events. You probably know the entire play off by heart. You are the best person for Cinderella.” he encouraged. I knew he was joking, but the truth was, I could tell you every single line (台词) in the play. When we reached the hall on Thursday, I began to wish I hadn’t signed up to be Cinderella. It was easier to feel hopeful several days ago when my name was the only one on the sign-up sheet. Since then, seven other girls have added their own names to the list, including Sherry Anderson, the head cheerleader (拉拉队长). Luckily, we were given a moment to practice before the auditions began. “Good,” Mr Cordoza said 高二英语学科 试题 第8页(共9页)approvingly as he stopped by and listened to my practice. I felt a glimmer of hope. “Now let’s see how you get on performing on the stage in front of everyone.” He clapped his hands for attention, signaling the start of the auditions. Sherry Anderson was up first. She showed great confidence as she tossed her long blonde hair and recited her lines. Although she lacked an understanding of the lines, her performance was attractive. Then it was my turn. As I climbed the stairs to the stage, I tripped, nearly falling flat on my face. I felt my cheeks burning. “When you’re ready,” Mr Cordoza said, sounding impatient. “Sorry,” I mumbled. I tried to calm my breathing, but the nerves tightened in my throat. “I...I…” I stuttered. ‘Speak up Amy, can’t hear you!’ jeers and whistles came from the back of the hall. I could feel that my performance was a disaster. Even Sherry’s lines were better than mine. Finally, I limped to the end of the scene, and as soon as it was over, I rushed off the stage, feeling defeated. As I made my way through the hallway, I spotted Artie waiting for me. 注意: (1)续写词数应为150左右; (2)请按如下格式作答。 He told me that Sherry got the role of Cinderella but I would be the understudy (替角). At the news, I sighed and forced a smile. Sensing my disappointment, Artie put his hand on my shoulder and encouraged, “Seize the chance and you can shine too. Believe in yourself!” His words giving me a burst of confidence, I nodded admittedly, determined to be the best understudy. In the following days, I spent hours every day rehearsing my lines, perfecting my expressions and practicing each act. Gradually, I grew more confident and was fully prepared for the possibility of stepping onto the stage if needed. On the day of the performance, Sherry got sick and couldn’t come. Panic filled the air backstage. Calm outside but nervous inside, I took a deep breath and stepped forward. All those days of hard work and preparation had led to this moment. As the curtains rose, I walked onto the stage with a newfound courage. The lights shone on me, and I delivered my lines with full of passion and confidence. With the music fading away, the audience broke into thunderous applause. At that very moment, I knew I fulfilled my mission as an understudy. That day, I became the star of the show, proving to myself and everyone that chances are for those who are prepared. Text 1 W: Those computer games have a bad influence on your schoolwork. I wish we’d never bought them for you. M: Come on! I need a break from all those books or I’ll go crazy. Text 2 M: You look worried, Mia. What’s wrong? W: My dog is outside. Look at the sky. I’m afraid he’ll get wet. M: Don’t worry. I’m sure he’ll find shelter when it rains. Text 3 M: Beatrice, what about going hiking in the country this Saturday? W: I’d love to, but I am going to an art exhibition at the City Art Centre with my parents. Text 4 W: Would you like to come to my reading salon tomorrow afternoon? It starts at four thirty. M: I’ve got basketball practice from three to five in the afternoon. Can I go after that? W: Of course, see you then. Text 5 W: Hi, George. This is Olivia calling. M: Hi, Olivia. Is your exam over? How did you do in the exam? W: Brilliant! That’s why I’m calling you now. I really appreciate what you did in my preparation. Text 6 M: It’s the start of another Saturday. No alarm clock, no work. I love it. W: How I wish I had as much free time as you do! So what do you usually do outside of work? M: At the moment, I’m spending most of my leisure time learning Spanish. I also enjoy playing the piano now and then. W: Do you play basketball? M: Not much. But I work out in the gym once a week. W: Why not try skating? It’s exciting. M: Yes, but full of adventure. I once broke my leg while skating, so I gave it up. 3W:What a pity! Text 7 W: Where’s the baby? M: Take it easy. She’s with the babysitter. W: She’s not sleeping, is she? If she sleeps now she’ll be awake all night! M: Don’t worry. I’m sure she’ll be tired enough to sleep tonight—she managed to walk for the first time today! W: What? Are you joking? M: No, she really did. But after a few steps, she fell on her bottom. She cried for a little while but the babysitter got her to stop by playing ball with her. Now they’re upstairs “reading” a picture book. Why don’t you go and say hello to her? W: I will ... and I’ll bring the camera, just in case she’s walking again! Text.8 W: Well, let’s continue with our show on local people with interesting jobs. Next we have Chris Elliott who’s a keeper at the city zoo with us. Chris, did you always want to work with animals? M: Oh, yes. Ever since I was four or five years old, what really interested me was not looking after cats or dogs like other children but lying in the grass watching insects. That interest in nature stayed with me. W: Did you study hard at university to become a zoo keeper? M: Yeah, there are many majors related to animals such as animal cure, animal science and etc. But actually I majored in biology. W: I see. And do you work with just one kind of animal? M: Well, that’s generally the case at my zoo. I used to work with tigers and then sea lions but for the last few years I’ve been taking care of the pandas, which is particularly exciting as they are rare and cute. W: That must be really fantastic! Thanks for coming to our programme, Chris. M: You’re welcome. Text 9 W: Kimi, thank goodness, you’ve arrived. The class presentation started half an hour ago and I was just beginning to panic. M: I’m sorry for being late, Hedy. This morning has been a real mess. I didn’t think I was going to make it here at all. W: Why are you late? Our whole presentation depends on these graphs you’re holding. M: Yes, I know. I’ll tell you about it later. First, let’s see how we’re doing on time. Two groups are still ahead of us, aren’t they? The presentation on the rights of the consumers and the analysis of the stock market. That means I’ve got about twenty minutes to prepare. W: You look cold. What happened? M: I’ve been standing outside in freezing temperatures for over an hour waiting for bus. W: Over an hour? But I thought your apartment was only ten-minute bus ride to our campus. M: Under normal conditions, but the bus was delayed because of the weather. So I had to wait another forty-five minutes for the next bus. W: That’s Murphy’s Law, isn’t it? Who was it that said “If anything can go wrong, it will.”? Well, we’ve still got eighteen minutes to gather our wits together. M: We’d better stop talking. People are turning around and looking at us. Text 10 W: Do you love staying with children? Are you looking for a job in winter? Then come to be a worker at our winter camp! We are looking for people who are friendly, patient, and above all, have some new ideas in working with children. You can be a member of our first camp, our second one, or both! You need to carry out small games and create activities for our campers, and be with them during mealtimes.
