A few months ago, a friend gifted me a robot sweeper that’s programmed to move around a room
and clean as it goes.
When the box arrived, I was afraid the device would detect me and soak up (汲) data along with
the dog hair and dust. But the instructions were easy, and I finally decided not to care.
I powered up the sweeper, watched it leave its docking station to work, and quickly fell in love
with my newly shiny floors. I kept shooting its working videos. “I think you’re giving more attention to
it than to us,” joked my son.
One day, I returned home and discovered that our front door had blown open and the robot rolled
into the yard, trying to clean the flower beds. Even when its brushes were blocked with leaves, bugs
and mud, its little wheels bravely kept turning.
The robot acted properly as it was programmed to clean “dirty” things. In a kitchen, dirt can be
garden debris (碎片) such as leaves and mud. In a garden, this kind of dirt does not need to be
removed. The context is important. The problem for robots is that reading this context is difficult.
This accident inspired me to think more about AI (artificial intelligence). As far as I am concerned,
AI is simply well trained and reproduces what it has learned. And it is undeniable that robots are
increasingly being given powerful intelligence. Some experts even predict that we will soon see not
only AI-enabled robots designed to solve problems according to their instructions, but also those with
the ability to judge how they should respond when they are in a different setting.
Maybe this will happen in the near future.
24. What was the author’s concern about the robot sweeper at first?
A. Its after-sales service.
B. Its working efficiency.
C. The privacy of her family.
学科网(北京)股份有限公司 期中考试 英语 第 4 页 共 12 页D. The readability of its instruction.
25. How did the author feel about the robot sweeper after using it?
A. Enthusiastic. B. Regretful. C. Uncertain. D. Cautious.
26. What was the root cause of the accident happening to the robot sweeper?
A. Its program went wrong.
B. It lacked critical thinking.
C. Its wheels were badly designed.
D. It failed to work on rough surfaces.
27. What does the sixth paragraph mainly talk about concerning AI?
A. The accident. B. The public’s thinking.
C. Its appeal to the author. D. The author’s opinion.

The state of Maine is famous for its delicious wild blueberries. The blueberries grow well on
barren mountaintops, in abandoned fields, along rural roadsides or where most other plants don’t.
They are also decidedly native as they have been growing in this landscape for more than10,000
years.
At David Dickey’s small farm, farmers harvest blueberries, packing a burst of sweetness into tiny
purple package. They’re also harvesting sunshine. A grid (格子) of solar panels stands a few feet
above four hectares (10 acres) of the land. The electricity these generate powers a few hundred nearby
homes. Under and around these panels are extending fields of the low, thick blueberry bushes.
Solar panels generate electric power without sending out the carbon dioxide and other greenhouse
gases that fossil fuels release as they’re burned. Fixing solar panels on farms helps solve another
major problem: finding the space to collect enough sunlight to produce enough supply of electricity.
This concept is called “Agrivoltaics”. The word combines “agriculture” with “photovoltaics (光
伏)”. Photovoltaic materials — such as solar panels — generate electric current from sunlight.
Growing crops requires hard work — often generating only a low income. Agrivoltaic projects
can benefit farmers by giving them a second crop: electric power. Also, farmers can pick up some
extra cash by renting their land to power companies that will fix their own solar panels on the site.
At the University of Maine in Orono, Dr. Calderwood focuses on finding ways to grow better
berries. Her work includes studying how the bushes can be planted to produce delicious berries despite
the shade cast by the solar panels at Dickey’s farm.
学科网(北京)股份有限公司 期中考试 英语 第 5 页 共 12 页“Although the idea behind Agrivoltaics has been around for decades, it’s really just exploded
over the last few years. Around the world, farmers and solar companies are working together to
combine farming with the production of electricity,” Calderwood says.
28. How is the second paragraph developed?
A. By giving descriptions. B. By making predictions.
C. By making comparisons. D. By offering suggestions.
29. How do the solar panels make a difference in generating electricity?
A. They take up less space. B. They produce no pollution.
C. They block out direct sunlight. D. They avoid the waste of electricity.
30. What is the main advantage of Agrivoltaic projects?
A. Increased agricultural productivity. B. Reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.
C. Additional source of income for farmers. D. Promotion of sustainable farming practices.
31. What can we learn about Agrivoltaic projects?
A. They are a creative idea. B. They are in a growing trend.
C. They are only useful to farmers. D. They are a traditional farming.

Studies have shown the mere exposure effect, also referred to as the familiarity principle, inspires
our decisions. It is a helpful psychological mechanism that helps us sustain our energy and focus our
attention on other things. Getting used to new things takes effort and it can be tiring. So unless we
have a terrible experience, we are likely to buy from companies we’ve got used to. That is why
companies spend so much money on advertising and marketing and why insurance (保险) companies
openly charge existing customers more than new ones.
It’s not the case that we only desire things we already know. Some studies suggest when invited
to share our preferences, we sometimes see less familiar options as more desirable. But when acting
on that preference, we fall back to what we know. This might explain why sometimes the things we
want and the things we do don’t quite match up. We might even return to companies that treated us
poorly in the past or stay in bad relationships.
It’s easy to paint the familiarity principle as an enemy or something to battle as if it is something
that holds us back from living our dreams. But this attitude might be overwhelming because it tends
to encourage us toward big-picture thinking. Where we imagine that change requires a quite dramatic
swing that we don’t feel ready for. Some articles suggest the solution to familiarity frustration (沮
学科网(北京)股份有限公司 期中考试 英语 第 6 页 共 12 页丧) is complete exposure to novelty. While this can appear effective in the short term, we may only
end up replacing one problem with another. It also risks overwhelm and burnout.
So what if we can work with the familiarity principle instead? Familiarity is something we can
learn to play with and enjoy. It is a setting for creativity and a pathway to expansion. We can broaden
the zone of familiarity bit by bit. If we think of familiarity as something that can expand, we can
consider changing the conditions in and around our lives to make more space for our preferences to
take root and grow gently. From here, we will start to make decisions, drawing from an ever-deepening
pool of valuable options.
32. What allows insurance companies to charge old customers more?
A. The advertising cost. B. The improved service.
C. The familiarity principle. D. The principle of the market.
33. We can learn from paragraph 2 that .
A. Our preferences affect our decisions
B. Familiarity tends to generate disrespect
C. The familiarity principle is a double-edged sword
D. There can be a mismatch between desires and actions
34. What is the author’s attitude towards the solution in some articles?
A. Disapproving. B. Tolerant. C. Objective. D. Reserved.
35. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. Step Out of Your Familiarity Zone
B. Spare a Thought for Your Preference
C. Gently Expand Your Familiarity Zone
D. Give Priority to the Mere Exposure Effect

Working from home in a small apartment is fine during the day. But when nighttime comes, it
may be difficult to turn off work and get a good night’s sleep. 36 These kinds of apartments,
with the living room, kitchen and sleeping area all in one room, are common in large cities.
Here comes some advice gathered on how to work productively and sleep well in such an
apartment.
学科网(北京)股份有限公司 期中考试 英语 第 7 页 共 12 页A good bed is extremely important
At the beginning, a good bed is a must. Even better is a high-quality sleep sofa that can double
as a bed and couch. Or, a Murphy bed. 3 7 He came up with this idea in 1900 while living in
his own studio apartment in California.
Create a sleep area
To separate your sleep area from the rest of the apartment, you can purchase a freestanding screen
or room divider. And try your best to keep your sleep area strictly for sleeping. 3 8 If you use
your bed during the daytime, you can do small tasks to keep daytime work and sleep separate. Lisa
Strauss, a psychologist and expert in sleep disorders, suggests using one side of the bed for reading
and the other for sleeping.
Freshen the air& Lower the lights
For starters, you must make sure the air flow is good. An air purifier will work, if you cook and
sleep in the same place. Also, be sure that computer, TV, and other electronic screens are turned off
at night. 3 9
Keep things clean and organized
One thing to avoid when it comes to studio living is leaving beds unmade. Why? 4 0 It
will also add to a sense of crowdedness. At night, you would do well to put away electronics. Side
tables with plugs and ports for electronics help you store devices and keep things organized and
clean.
A. It is named after William Murphy.
B. However, that is not always possible.
C. Studio apartments often do not have a lot of storage.
D. Work and life can be even harder in studio apartments.
E. People will have an impression that you are lazy and untidy.
F. Their light can affect our internal clocks if they are at a short distance from bed.
G. Using calming smells like lavender(薰衣草) at bedtime will set the tone for restful sleep.

An Angel on a Snowy Night
The wind was blowing hard as I was driving down the twists and turns of the country
road. I was desperate to get home before dark, but there seemed no way. The forecast said there
was going to be a heavy snow on the way. It was freezing cold outside. The wind was blowing
against the windows, letting out buzzing noises. Hair standing on end, I stepped hard on the
accelerator, longing to make it to my cozy home earlier.
The car was roaring along the rough road when I suddenly heard a big bang coming from
behind. The car somehow slowed down, and I managed to pull it over to the side of the road. I
was in a cold sweat from extreme terror, wondering what had just happened. Dragging myself out of
the driver’s seat, I shivered with cold. Suddenly, a gust of cold wind cleared my head. Quickly I
examined the car. Much to my surprise, no serious damage was done. It was just a flat tire, but the
car couldn’t move forward an inch!
It was black dark outside. There was not a single soul around to turn to. A wave of fear instantly
washed over me. Worse still, it began to snow at the very moment. Snowflakes were dancing in
the air at the mercy of howling wind. How I wished someone could come to my rescue just in time!
With nowhere to hide, I had to wait in the darkness, cold and helpless.
I waited and waited, but no car or truck passed by. Swallowed by complete darkness, I almost
went mad. “What if no one comes? What should I do?”, I mumbled. At this point, I was totally seized
by anxiety and fear. My patience was running out when loud noises boomed out from the dark night.
There came a Ford pickup, with dazzling light cast over the white snow. I sprang to my feet,
waving my arms crazily.
