Best Citywalk Trails in Hong Kong
As a coastal city built on reclaimed land, Hong Kong possesses various distinctive
citywalk trails.
Lantau Trail
This 4.5km trail is rated as a challenging route requiring an average of 2h32min to
complete. During the trial, you will be able to reach the highest mountain — Lantau Peak. It’s
recommended to bring plenty of water, snacks, and sturdy (结实的) footwear, and set off early

need to be a Buddhist to enjoy a morning at the Tian Tan Buddha. It’s best to start off in the
morning, but avoid a foggy or cloudy day.

It takes about 1h47min to finish this moderately challenging 6.6km route. This trail features
Hong Kong’s most unusual temple, the largest museum, and best shopping malls. Sha Tin may
be considered “off the beaten track” for many visitors but for those with more than a short 3 or 4
days stay in HK, it can prove to be a very rewarding day trip.
Cheung Chau Trail

I was always a reader. As a kid,I walked to the library several times a week and stayed
up late reading with a torch.I did my undergraduate degree in English and went on to get a
master's in literature. When I created my online profile,I made my screen name
“missbibliophile”. Filling out the “favorite books” section, I let my taste in literature speak for
me:One Hundred Years of Solitude,A Moveable Feast,White Teeth,The Namesake,The
Known World.
But I realized it had been more than two years since I had read most of those titles.I had
stopped reading gradually, the way one heals or dies.
David was my online friend. His profile said he liked to read,so I asked him about his last
book. His face lit up and his fingers danced.I told him I only read one book that year.“But it's
June.Read a book!” he said.
I was painfully aware of the glaring hypocrisy(虚伪) in my life.I defended the virtues of
bookstores in the age of online retailing and bought books, and they sat on every surface until
my house appeared to wear books the way one wears clothes.
His suggestion on “reading a book” echoed in my head. One afternoon,I picked up one
I'd bought only for its poetic title.I had a hard time getting into it.Whenever I was tempted to
give up on it,I thought of David.I pushed through the first two chapters and discovered a new
narrator and I loved the alternating points of view.I read at lunch and on my walk home,
occasionally lifting my eyes to avoid strangers and uneven road surface.I stayed up late and
finished the book.
I felt great and proud of myself. The last time I'd pulled an allnighter to read,I was 12. I
felt him pushing me to be more of the person I used to be and more of who I wanted to be.
24.Why did the author purposely list many classics in her profile?
A.To show her taste. B.To list books read.
C.To fill out the form. D.To indicate her ability.
25.How much do we know about David?
A.He is interested in dancing. B.He is excited about books.
C.He is curious about the Internet. D.He is patient with strangers.
26.How did the author try to appear fond of reading?
A.By refusing online books. B.By decorating her house with books.
C.By wandering about bookstores. D.By constantly buying different books.
27.Why did the author feel proud of herself ?
A.She stayed up all night. B.She finished reading a book.
C.She regained passion for books. D.David pushed her to read.

Having an extra slice of cake, buying expensive clothes, or sleeping in until 11 A.M. may
bring you great enjoyment. It might be something that makes your week worth it or how you get
through a stressful day. Still, you may feel embarrassment or shame if you admit to it. This is
why “guilty pleasures” exist. It comes from the idea that when we treat ourselves, it can
sometimes leave us feeling guilty.
Perhaps we don’t feel we deserved it, or we don’t think it was a responsible way to spend
our money. What if we told you that you shouldn’t feel bad about your guilty pleasures and thatthey are actually fantastic for you? Keep reading to discover why you should indulge
occasionally.
Psychologists say that buying things for yourself can make you feel better because it gives
you a chance to take control of your situation. It can also give you social contact and a
confidence boost from changes you make to your self-image. When you feel under the weather,
treating yourself might be the lift you need. When you buy a treat, you might just be looking
after yourself and maintaining a positive outlook.
Permitting yourself to enjoy things can help you deal with symptoms of anxiety and
depression. It can even be a protective factor against depression. Life isn’t easy, and when we’re
struggling, we need to be kind to ourselves. Indulging in the things that bring us joy can envelop
us in comfort during tough times. As long as your guilty pleasure is harmless, there is no reason
not to do it. Our brain’s neural pathways light up when we do things we enjoy. This makes it
easier to gain feelings of happiness.
As we said earlier, guilt and happiness can be mixed up in our minds. Rather than fighting
them or trying to replace them, welcome them. Eventually, embracing these feelings can
enhance your overall well-being and happiness.
28. Which of the following can replace the underlined word “indulge” in the second paragraph?
A.ignore expense. B.embrace oneself.
C.satisfy oneself. D.deny guilty feelings.
29. According to psychologists mentioned in the text, what effect does buying things for oneself
have?
A. It leads to financial instability.
B. It can create feelings of guilt and shame.
C. It enhances self-control and improves mood.
D. It causes social isolation and low self-esteem
30. Which of the following belongs to looking after yourself according to psychologists?
A.Going to the cinema. B.Volunteering in the community.
C.Working overtime to meet deadlines. D.Ignoring your hobbies.
31. How does the text propose we should deal with the feelings of guilt?
A.Fight against them. B. Replace them with happiness.
C.Welcome and embrace them. D. Suppress them completely.
D
In the rich countries of the West, the electric vehicle revolution is well underway. Climate-
conscious consumers drive Teslas or Polestars for reasons of morality and fashion. Poorer
countries are also experiencing a wave of electrified trend. In Bangladesh, electric three-wheeler
taxis, known as tuk-tuks, are rapidly replacing gas-powered ones on the streets. Such electric
vehicles are climate friendly, cost effective, and help reduce air pollution.
Yet a glance under the hood (引擎盖) of these vehicles reveals a poisonous secret: each tuk-
tuk runs on five massive lead-acid batteries, containing almost 300 pounds of lead in total. Every
year and a half or so, when those batteries need to be replaced and recycled, about 60 pounds of
lead leak into the environment. Battery recycling, often at small-scale unregulated factories, is a
highly profitable but deadly business.
Lead is dangerous, and any exposure to it is harmful to human health. Lead that has entered
the environment hurts people on an extraordinary scale. The numerous ways lead enters air,
water, soil, and homes across the developing world — and the enormous damage it does to
human health, wealth, and welfare — causes one of the biggest environmental crises in the
world yet receives little attention.
The World Bank estimates that lead kills 5. 5 million people per year, which would make it
a bigger global killer than AIDS, malaria, diabetes, and road traffic deaths combined. On top ofthe shocking deaths, the social burden of lead poisoning is extraordinary, as is its contribution to
global inequality — our research on the cognitive effects of lead poisoning suggests that it may
explain about one-fifth of the educational achievement gap between rich and poor countries.
But unlike many challenges faced by developing countries, lead poisoning is a problem that
is fixable with some attention and a relatively modest financial investment. Better monitoring,
research, and rules can help protect children all over the world from the dreadful effects of lead
poisoning and reduce the massive global costs it brings.
32. How does the author describe the lead problem in paragraph 2?
A. By making a comparison. B. By analyzing hidden causes.
C. By listing convincing numbers. D. By explaining its working principle.
33. What can we learn from the text?
A. Lead enters rich countries in various ways.
B. Lead poisoning may make poor societies poorer.
C. Exposure to lead doesn’t necessarily harm someone.
D. Lead leaking has caused great panic in both countries.
34. What can be done to solve lead poisoning in developing countries?
A. Fixing these used batteries. B. Putting certain effort and money.
C. Prohibiting the illegal use of lead. D. Reducing the cost of recycling lead.
35. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. The Impacts of Lead Poisoning on Human Health
B. The Outcomes of Using Electric Vehicles
C. The Ways to Solve Lead Problem
D. The Global Lead Poisoning Crisis

文。
Jared had been looking forward to the first day of second grade at Maplewood Elementary.
No longer a shy first grader , he felt confident and ready to tackle new challenges. However ,
there was one person he hoped to avoid : Jessica Hart . She was loud , bossy , and always made
fun of him . Even though it was a new year , Jared was sure she wouldn’t change .
When he entered the classroom , he saw Jessica sitting by the window , laughing and
talking loudly. Jared rolled his eyes and took a seat , hoping to stay out of her way . He focused
on his work all day , determined to avoid any interaction with her. But fate , it seemed , had
other plans .
During recess(课间休息), as Jared was walking to the swings(秋千) , he noticed Jessica
standing by the big oak tree , her hands on her hips , looking upset . She was staring at
something in the tree. Jared approached cautiously, wondering what was going on .
“What’s wrong , Jessica ?" he asked , trying to sound as uninterested as possible. Jessica
looked up , her face filled with panic ." The kittens ! They’re stuck in the tree !" Jared frowned ,
looking up at the tall oak .
Sure enough, settled on one of the highest branches, were two tiny kittens , mewing
helplessly . Jessica’s face turned red with embarrassment .“ I was trying to climb up to get them ,
but they keep climbing higher !”she explained , her voice trembling .“I don’t know what to do !”
Jared hesitated. He hadn’t planned on being the hero today. He had barely spoken to
Jessica outside of the classroom , let alone had any reason to help her. But the sound of those
helpless little kittens made something in him change .
“I’ll help,” he said before he could think twice. Jessica stared at him in surprise .“ You ?But you don’t even like me !” Jared shrugged ." Maybe I don’t like you , but I can’t just leave
the kittens up there ."
